An unusual pet

The Largest Snail in the World

The Giant African Land Snail is the largest among all land snails in the world.

The largest recorded speciment was collected on a snail safari in Sierra Leone in 1976. Measured 1 foot 3.5 inches fully extended. Its owner got divorced after their house got too full of snails.

Giant African Land snails are hermaphrodites and adults lay as many as 1200 eggs a year. They have now spread to many countries, and are often considered pests. They eat more than 500 plants and sometimes eat cement or bones for calcium.

These snails also carry rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis in people. Nevertheless, after cooking, they are eaten in some places as a bar snack on toothpicks, or stewed with peppers and rice. Mmmmm.

They have been eradicated from Florida twice, but still remain a threat in Hawaii and the Caribbean.

I may check out other mollusks as replacement pets. If I decide I need a mollusk as a pet. Maybe I could keep a little squid in an aquarium or something.

Finding a Lost Dog

It had been 12 days since this dog owner had last seen his faithful friend. Running out of options, the owner continued to go back to the woods where his dog had disappeared. It was there that he met a pair of hunters who gave hip a tip that saved the day.

The owner posted his story to the social media website Reddit under the username a_little_pixie.

On day 12 of searching for my dog in a heavily wooded area, distraught and hopeless, I ran into a couple of hunters. They said they lost the occasional dog on a hunt but always got them back. What they told me has helped many dogs and families be reunited. I've given their advice out a few times in the last couple days, so I thought if reddit has any lost dogs out there, this could help:
The dog owner(s) should take an article of clothing that has been worn at least all day, the longer the better, so the lost dog can pick up the scent.
Bring the article of clothing to the location where the dog was last seen and leave it there. Also, if the dog has a crate & familiar toy, you can bring those too (unless location undesirable for crate). You might also want to leave a note requesting item(s) not to be moved.
Leave a bowl of water there too, as the dog probably hasn't had access to any. Do not bring food as this could attract other animals that the dog might avoid.
Come back the next day, or check intermittently if possible. Hopefully the dog will be waiting there.
I was skeptical and doubted my dog would be able to detect an article of clothing if he didn't hear me calling his name as loud as possible all day for 12 days. But I returned the next day and sure enough found him sitting there!
I hope this helps someone out there who's missing a best friend. Good luck

She's a Tennessee girl. As a puppy, always puked whenever I put her in the car. Now, she loves car rides more than anything else. Here we are up on Mt. Mitchell, NC on the Blue Ridge Parkway enjoying the fall colors on a weekend drive.

Wolfus Aurelius here. Earlier this week I posted that Miss Linda had rescued a small black kitten from the curb outside my house, screeching like a hawk for someone to help her. (We're guessing female for now; it just seems easier to say than repeating "he or she.") She's a shorthair, gawky and tiny. No sign of a human guardian or of her mother, and she's very young, perhaps only four to six weeks old. Linda brought her into my place and fed her, which shut her up, and then she was most pleased to settle on Linda's lap. She seems energetic and playful. My two feline thugs sniffed her and then left her alone with minimal hissing.
There's no way I can take in a third cat, and Linda does not want one for some reason. So this weekend we will bring her to the local SPCA. Someone on the blog suggested calling her "Noir DuBois," as she is "depend[ing] on the kindness of strangers." It's perfect, if a touch hard to pronounce. By the time this appears I suspect she will have been turned over to the shelter and they will probably give her a cute name that will help her get adopted. ("Lucky," probably.)
The pic of the grayish-brown bush with eyes is of Dagny Sophia, aka La Siberienne, taken the day Linda rescued little Noir. She looks disconcerted by the presence of an interloper, but didn't object.

Well, that kitten is just a little waif! Dagny does not look pleased!

We got a new cat, a two year old from the shelter, poor thing had been adopted and returned, and I have no idea why. He has recently discovered that there are mice in the woodshed so he now has a hobby.
His name is Magic. He is getting along well with my older black tom, Minky who is delighted to have someone to spoon with.

One lady suggested mixing your pee with distilled water and leaving trails out by dribbling it while walking . Dogs tend to focus on pee and may follow a trail if it is familiar.

18 In the continuing saga of Mr Trouble, he spent time in the house during the cold snap. First time was an hour or so nap in the chair in my office. Second time, he came right in with us at 3 in the morning and took a four hour napin the chair. If I thought he was happy about having a box and a rug, this is like Disneyland for a stray.

This is all not so good for me as it puts Jake and Fanny on high alert. I can close off the bedroom for me and Jake. But Fanny has been sleeping in the converted garage. My solution is to buy a door for the office, and I'll just close him off in there for these naps. I suspect he will keep coming in when the weather is bad. It's surprising how grateful animals can be for good care. People sometimes aren't grateful.

20 Sorry about Dixie getting attacked Miklos. Pets usually do fine with one eye. We had a cat years ago that lost an eye. Accidental injury, the cat and dog loved to play with each other but one day the cats eye got punctured during the playing.

24 Having them chipped is a good idea. My husband had one cat disappear after the house fire. Four years later, we get a call from a vet. A woman had been feeding him and took him to the vet to be checked. We took him back. He was about four blocks away but must have beein hiding when they had the signs up about the missing cat.

30 We had a cat that lost an eye to squamous cell carcinoma, in the tear duct I think. Did alright for several years until the cancer worked into its brain and we had to euthanize it.

Right now Salem, the large black and one of the rescued room cats usually seen on webcam, probably has a UTI. Is there anything that works other than a vet visit? Mt vet account balance is already large.

Delilah, having gone through a period of not eating, has become ravenous. I guess something kicked in to tell her to get her babies fed.

She goes in for an X-ray on the 15th to get a count. Hoping there are a lot. To fulfill the demand people have for her puppies, she'll need a litter of a hundred.

40 Not a pet per se, but a monster crow crashed into one of the windows earlier today. Didn't break the window but it really rang his bell. I went out and sat on the deck with him for awhile while he collected himself.

He strutted around for a time and then with a final shake of his head took off and joined up with the rest of his brethren not the worse for the wear.

We brought her over to the SPCA this morning. She is indeed a girl, and they guessed maybe two months of age. Which seems odd -- she is very tiny for that age. And that's the outside edge of the window for cats to accept people and not go feral. She must have been used to people before Miss Linda found her. They'll do the intake medical stuff, and maybe have her up on the website and ready for adoption by next weekend. Possibly, too, one of the rescue organizations might scoop her up and give her even more exposure.

So sorry to hear about Dixie Doodle. (Love that name.) But I predict once she is over the trauma and treatment, she will be back to normal. We had a dog go completely blind at 4 years old. Not uncommon for standard white poodles. For a while he used his brother as a seeing eye dog until he got the lay of the land memorized. After that it was like he could still see.

48 And the vaccine clinic visit (no, not THAT kind of vax) for Dagny went amazingly well. A lot of people with both dogs and cats lined up for this. We got there at 8:45 (the start time was to be 9:00) and there was already a line. But! The clinic staff went down the line, filling out the form for each of us; then came a table with two staffers where we paid ($20, which is why we where all there). Bit by bit they moved us inside and to the exam room, which handled two at a time. A quick lab, a quick insert of the microchip and check with a tricorder, and we were done -- forty minutes all told. Truly, I was amazed.

The staffer who took Dagny's data had never heard of a "Siberian" cat.

53 One of my former cats (RIP, Boop!) lost an eye in a fight.

She was an indoor cat, but escaped for a sniff-about and nibble of fresh greens.

She was attacked by a *huge* stray tomcat-- only perhaps 20ft from the backdoor. Oh, horrors, the scream she made and looked like she was crying blood. Ugh!

After the vet visit, she hid in my closet for days. Refused food, even canned tuna. Finally got her to eat plain baby cereal on day 4. Had to bring food and water to her in the closet.

Weeks of applying antibiotic and dilator creams to her eye, each 4x daily. She kept hey eye but was blinded.

I baited and dispatched the stray. Took a week. B@st@rd. He hurt my baby!

55 Howdy pet lovers. I need to get in gear and send in pics of our newest addition to the menagerie. Jules finally found a Gordon Setter, actually just minutes from my Dad in WI. I did not want a 3rd dog, also have one cat, but here we are. Flash, the Gordon Setter, is 3.5 months old and fearless.
Bailey the old dog mainlt ignores him, too much activity for her. However to our great suprise Kahlua, age 7, is very motherly towards the pup. We thought her nose would be out of joint as she can be a prima donna but no, she loves to "fight" w/ the pup. They look and sound fierce but are just having a blast.

When I was a boy, Rusty, our big shorthair red tabby, vanished one day when he was about two years old. He would not willingly have gone out the gate onto the street; he was frightened of any humans other than his regulars, or friends my age I brought home. (He adjusted that as I grew older.) My brother and I searched the neighborhood, and Mom asked around with the neighbors and put signs up.

Two days later, he was there at the door, crying in his little rusty-hinge voice, and clearly very hungry. We theorized that he got suddenly frightened and ran in through the back door of the shop that gave onto our patio, and then been too scared to find his way back out. The shop people probably never knew he was there.

57 Over in the UK (at least in the early 90s), they used to show 'sporting' events with dogs herding sheep. You wouldn't think it would be of interest to a bunch of young, military aged, heavy drinkers, mostly city boys and suburbanites, but there we were, in the TV room, watching dogs herding sheep. I really can't explain it. It was fascinating.

The little black kitten is adorable and Dagny is majestic, Wolfus. I am glad, Kindltot, that Magic and Minky are getting along.

Stirling suddenly began having trouble urinating when he was about six months old -- and on a Sunday evening yet. Years ago male cats would often get that urethral blockage problem. I zipped him to the emergency clinic. Turned out it was a UTI.

Miklos, so sorry to hear about the injury to your pet, I hope it will recover as well as possible. The little kitten that Wolfus is helping is adorable. I miss kitten energy around the house. My 13 year old cat mostly sleeps about 20 hours a day.

78 I swear that Precious, our senior Bichon, is aging backwards. Even at 15, she is increasingly lively and dances on her hind legs when it's time for a walk (or when she thinks she is getting fed). When we adopted her a few months ago we thought we might give her a comfortable home for as long as she lasted. Now, with dental care a growth removed, she acts like she is a teenager.

93 Come to think of it, I have no idea how old little longhair tuxedo cat Oreo was when she passed away in 2008. When I adopted her in 2002, I was told she was five; but at a vet visit sometime later, the doctor thought her teeth betrayed her age as older than that. Rather than being eleven, she might have been fourteen or fifteen.

>Ha! Work it. Exactly how much burden does getting a lap dog put on your budget? Just admit it, you'll be the guy stuck with the dog. Walking, exercising, training, cleaning up his messes. The family will say 'hello' to the dog for two seconds every day and then be off to the social media app of the day.

As far as OTC remedies for UTIs go, you might look into D-Mannose supplements. (It's a natural sugar.) I use them for female human UTIs and they are very effective. Our dog got a UTI and I was going to take her to the vet until I found some posts that said dogs (and cats) could also take D-Mannose. I gave her a couple of doses and BOOM she was fine again.

I read of people saying that they gave it to their cats, but I have no personal experience with that so proceed with caution.

I buy mine from Amazon but it can also be found at places like Whole Foods. You can search for results for cats in the reviews at Amazon.

Oh. I’m sure I’ll be stuck with the burden. I ended up cleaning the kitty litter despite it not being my cat. So, yeah, if we’re getting a dog? I want a Boxer. Good with kids and good with protection.

All of our Maine Coons over that past 50 years have made it to around 18 1/2. Our present spoiled Maine Coon, Sandy, just turned 13. All have been female. A wonderful, goofy breed.

I can lend you Flash, @3.5 months he is going full speed, then crashes for 2 hrs. Repeat all day long. He's a lot of fun. The seller said they were all cuddley and she was right.
