Well, we certainly have had a lot of issues in the news this week, many of which I wish we could change. But failing that, maybe we need to understand them a little better. Like:

A partnership on environmental issues is supposed to be a big part of the budding friendship between California and China. Does this mean that China will be suing California oil companies (like the State of California), or will California maybe be building some coal-fired power plants like China? They're having some fun with EVs.

California's War on Math

Math made California prosper.
It's most obvious in top universities like Stanford, Caltech, Berkeley, and UCLA. Those schools funneled great minds into California STEM enterprises like Silicon Valley, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and aeronautical engineering. Both the Central Valley and Hollywood--America's main providers of food and fodder, respectively--rely upon engineering to mechanize production and optimize output.
All of this has made California's GDP $3.6 trillion--making it the fifth largest economy in the world as of last year.
But now "California is America, only sooner" is a warning, and not just because of the exodus of people and jobs and the decay of our major cities, but because of the state's abandonment of math--which is to say its abandonment of excellence and, in a way, reality itself.
Perhaps you've read the headlines about kooky San Francisco discarding algebra in the name of anti-racism. Now imagine that worldview adopted by the entire state.

Maybe Oregon is worse, deciding that high school graduates don't have to be able to read or do math. Don't know.

Maybe we should start evacuating students from all the Qatari campuses of American universities before the IDF starts gunning for Hamas bigwigs in Qatar. The wiki on Qatar seems fairly straightforward, considering.

Don't discount all actors, especially the extremely good ones. We were talking about Vincent Price movies last night, and I remember reading that one of the reasons other actors and directors loved to work with him in both film and stage is that before production ever began, he would memorize not only his lines but the lines of everyone else in the production, so he could instantly help or improvise if anyone else stumbled. It's a big reason why he could have so much fun with his characters.

We were talking about Vincent Price movies last night, and I remember reading that one of the reasons other actors and directors loved to work with him in both film and stage is that before production ever began, he would memorize not only his lines but the lines of everyone else in the production, so he could instantly help or improvise if anyone else stumbled. It's a big reason why he could have so much fun with his characters.

Clu Gulager tells the story of how, during filming of The Killers, Lee Marvin is expressing contempt for all the other actors, especially Ronnie Raygun, who was doing his last film. He said Marvin tried to trip up Ronnie, by doing one scene over and over, messing up something or other, and doing it a little differently every time.

And each time Marvin would muck up or change his line, Reagan would do his... EXACTLY the same, every time.

It frustrated Marvin immensely, to the point where I'm sure he went and got himself good and drunk afterwards.

Actual VW cars were pretty scarce in wartime Germany. They had barely gotten started with production of civilian cars when all German production went on a war footing. VW factory shifted making Kubelwagens, the Nazi's tactical car that filled the same role as the Jeep. There was one in that scene from Kelly's Heroes that got linked yesterday.

I would further add, usually around Presidential election season, the number of trolls, spammers, and general muck makers increase, so the spambots that started to pollute the older threads were not necessarily just "innocent" spammers.

However many of them contained viruses and other malware, in addition to links to darker websites, I think it became a legal liability to leave them up.

you'd be amazed how many lines from Shakespeare you use daily, not to mention how many of the plots of our films and stories are derivative of what he wrote. Shakespeare and the King James Bible standardized and in essence created the modern English language.

I shocked some here by saying from the very beginning that they have to be written off. You cannot allow your enemy to have leverage like that over you. If Israel were to learn the exact location of them, the best thing they could do would be to send a 2,000 lb JDAM to the spot.

In GDL one visit my high-rise hotel had a concrete balcony. My Mexican colleague would absolutely, positively not go out onto it. Period, The End.
Since then I stay in the old hotels in the center part of the city; last one was erected in 1602 and quite cool even without using the A/C. Really nice.

I imagine NOAA will change the criteria for what constitutes a hurricane. They've changed much of the climate nomenclature to make literally thunderstorms seem "extreme." And recolored maps so temps in the 80's are now "danger red."
