Ace of Spades Pet Thread, July 29

cat destroys furniture still.jpg

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Why do cats love boxes? Research continues, though maybe not real good research.

It is a truth universally acknowledged - - at least by those of the feline persuasion - - that an empty box on the floor must be in want of a cat. Ditto for laundry baskets, suitcases, sinks, and even cat carriers (when not used as transport to the vet). This behavior is generally attributed to the fact that cats feel safer when squeezed into small spaces, but it might also be able to tell us something about feline visual perception. That's the rationale behind a study in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science with a colorful title: "If I fits I sits: A citizen science investigation into illusory contour susceptibility in domestic cats (Felis silvers catus)."

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the study design here was a little shaky. And they didn't get what I thought was a solid response. "Citizen science" may be harder if it involves a cat. Don't know.

The sunglasses were an interesting part of the trial.

Although some 500 pet cats and their owners expressed interest, only 30 completed all six of the study's trials over the course of the two-month study last summer. Of those, nine of the cats selected at least one of the stimuli by sitting within its contours (illusory or otherwise) for at least three seconds--a pretty good duration given the notorious fickleness of cats. As for preferences, cats selected the Kanizsa illusion just as often as the square; they selected both of those more often than the control stimulus. In other words, the cats treated the illusory square the same way they treated the real square.

So let's see: Nine of 500 cats in the pool of potential study subjects (nine of 30 who completed all 6 steps of the trial) selected at least one of the stimuli. Of those nine, cats were just as likely to choose illusory as real squares for 3 seconds.

Does that sound like solid research to you?

Dog studies planned next. Maybe they will be more cooperative.

Meet The PetMorons

Last week, we met Tank the Cat, who had arrived Chez Jacque Assarie! Here are the other cats who live there, though Tank has not integrated into the group Yet:

14 Halloooo, Pet Thread.

Doggone it!

Canine news of the week, part 1 - Well, last week; I forgot to mention it on the petthread:

GoodsonM took his dogs to the dog park. (Pix of big Jarl and little Bandit, from a while back, linked in nic. Bandit got bigger.)

Bandit and another dog were roughhousing when they slammed into SonM, who went down hard. Docs've repaired the leg break and fractures, and sewn up the torn ligament, but M is out of commission for the duration of the Summer, and more.

Peripherally, the docs found a problem with SonM's heart, so in that way, it wasn't an all-bad thing.

One of my coworkers had to say goodbye to one of her kitties yesterday. The poor cat had not been eating well so he was taken to the vet. Then my coworker got the sad news there was nothing they could do for him...

Thankfully all but one are Greyhounds so things are relatively quiet.

They do still though like to play in the brown paper grocery bags.

25 It's been hot here in Bourbon Country and the water I put out for the cats gets hot. So I put a cup of ice in it. But it makes that crackling sound as the ice melts. Thus the cats are freaked out and run away.

27 Precious, the nearly 15 year old Bichon we adopted last week, is just a sweetie, despite the huge dislocation she went through in only a few days. (Life long home to the animal shelter to us and a less than happy visit to the vet.) She wags her tail any time she's walking and loves to be petted. She sleeps a lot, as you might expect for a dog her age, but when she is awake she wants to know where we are and explores to find out. It is now normal to open the bathroom door and find her waiting there. If I'm reading in the recliner it's good odds she will be sleeping at my feet in short order. She's certainly a people dog.

28 Canine news of the week, part 2

Yesterday (Friday), MiladyJo cooked up a bunch of burgers. I had one. She had one. Daisy the madcap Malinois got some. Then she went in the kitchen and helped herself to some more. There were just two small burgers left on the counter when she got caught.

I try to avoid ever calling her a Bad Dog, but I might've. (Dog is Good; behaviors are bad.) Definitely took her, on a short leash, inside, back to the scene of the crime and scolded her. She's smart, and she does Guilt really well. Aggravated as I am, it's hard to get too mad. She's a young dog, careless humans left the tasty, beefy burgers right there, and she had about as much impulse control as when she sees a squirrel.

38 Afternoon, all,

The cat in the "Still looks fabulous" meme, and Johnny, Peanut, and Spooky all look much like my big black Stirling. Which, in case you hadn't heard from earlier this week, is exactly the right word: BIG. He clocked in at the vet on Thursday as 13.5 lbs. -- a cat who was only about 9.5 just a few months ago at his last checkup. And he's only 15 months old. Translation: Stirling needs to do a few laps every day and lay off some of the dry food! This won't be easy, as I still have to feed little Dagny, who is still growing (slowly). On the plus side, I've got a huge backlog of "fat" jokes I can trot out now.

Dagny is actually showing a little more affection on a daily basis. She's not so much the arrogant princess I thought she was.

Good to hear Dagny is getting more affectionate. Lucy the Fink has been getting increasingly more affectionate as the years creep by. She is almost 10 now. I hope to have her for many more years.

She's on thyroid meds though. I wonder if that cuts her life expectancy. She's doing great, been on them for a little over a year.

Sorry for your mother but glad to hear that the pup could go to a good home. We got lucky in this business; there is a kennel that specializes in sighthounds but it fills up quickly. My wife looked them over and realized she could do the job at our place. So between regular friends and word of mouth, she left her retail job and focuses on this.

Well, Dagny has always been oriented toward humans. After all, one human or another has been there caring for her since she can remember. She still is not a lap cat (neither is Stirling most of the time), but she now likes to nap with me.

Dunno if thyroid meds will shorten Lucy's life any. But I suspect not treating the condition would send her to the Rainbow Bridge sooner than she should.

53 Another Pet Thread, another week. Time seems to fly and at 29 it’s hard to see it go.
Tomorrow the 4 kittens will be 13 weeks old. They are little bundles of love looking for large bundles of love.
You, the Moron Horde, have been a great lot as a source of moral and specially financial support. We have been inspired by the generosity you have shown and a special tip of the hat to those who have helped more than once. Those occasions made the room quite misty.
Now we come to what Peter Sellers termed ‘the unkindest cut of all’, namely the deballing for the 3 boys, and the removal of that kitten-nurturing equipment for the 3 girls. Also the two ‘ferals’ outside, Mr Gray (who obviously has his marbles) and his girlfriend currently referred to as ‘The Girl’, who may have been done elsewhere as she is definitely a previously-owned cat.

55 It would be nice to dip into the apparently bottomless barrels of funds to which the liberals seem to have access for gender-surgery on kids. No matter, we’ll talk to the vet about getting a discount and a payment plan. Got to do it soon as we cannot cope either financially or physically with another batch of kittens, regardless of how adorable they are. Yes, they are appropriately named bundles of joy but I have also known them to be referenced as bundles of destruction, referencing the same set.
Naming Cats continued ........
So all this preamble is for me to ask for help in coming up with names, names required for I.D. at the vet. As suggested a while back, we need cookie or biscuit names, in keeping with the Mum Biscuits. We are so creative, example one of our two tuxedo cats is OREO. The other rescued from Walmart's parking lot is, surprise, MARTY.
Summary: kittens - 3 boys, one girl (Nurse has suggested Cookie for her);

58 The reason Stirling's weight gain has crept up on me is that he does not look or act like an overweight cat. He is a little less hyper-kitten active, sure, at 15 months. But he gallops around and play-fights with Dagny. And his middle does not look bigger than it should. True, his ribs are a little hard to detect when I pet him, which I guess is the real clue.

He will still get his wet food, which is mostly water I guess. But I'm going to distribute only about three scoops of dry food between the two cats every day instead of four or a bit more.

66 I've told my peacock story before here but it's a favorite. There is an old-school restaurant (Green Pastures) that's in an old plantation house in south Austin. Don't know about now, but for years they kept peacocks about the place because--ambience.

One night husband and I were dining there when a thunderstorm moved in. All of the peacocks ran under the house and started shrieking. The birds were more deafening than then storm. I wonder what the Texas newbies thought of that!!

68 Speaking of strays, Notsothoreau, the slim grey shorthair I'd nicknamed Alfred the Grey and who has been turning up on my doorstep for dry food for some months has not shown up in the last week. I hope it's because someone took him in and not another, less pleasant outcome. For some time I've been suggesting that Miss Linda adopt him, but she doesn't want another cat.

72 Wolfus,

Lucy has access to kibble 24/7. She gets 1/3 of a can of wet food in the evening and treats after her twice daily thyroid medication.

She's 11-12#. I noticed her weight loss down to 10# and she was looking kind of scraggly, not grooming herself as well as she used to.... that's when I took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with kitty hyperthyroidism. This is after her acute kidney injury in 2019. I had to administer fluids subcutaneously twice a day for about a month. Jeepers. I love this little kitty cat.

82 That's too bad. It's easy to get heartbroken over a missing outside cat. For now, I just have to accept that it could happen. He's a sweet cat, comes over for regular pets, and did come a bit inside the back door. When it gets cold, he may be ready for the inside life.

100 So all this preamble is for me to ask for help in coming up with names, names required for I.D. at the vet. As suggested a while back, we need cookie or biscuit names, in keeping with the Mum Biscuits. We are so creative, example one of our two tuxedo cats is OREO. The other rescued from Walmart's parking lot is, surprise, MARTY.
Summary: kittens - 3 boys, one girl (Nurse has suggested Cookie for her);
outside - The Girl needs a name unrelated to cookies.
