Ace of Spades Pet Thread, July 22

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Have you ever had a cat who chirped?

Cats are typically joyful when they chirp, as they are either anticipating a hunt or greeting a human. When a cat is enthusiastic about a bird or bug she sees, it may assume the position of stalking, and stay low to the ground. On the other hand, "Cats that are greeting a housemate or family member will often show their happiness by headbutting, or asking for attention," while making the chirping noise, says Dr. Wilson. Another way some cats like to say hello is by rubbing against your legs.

* * *

Cheetahs can really chirp.

He really tears up his toys, while maintaining an innocent demeanor ....

On the other hand, she and her husband became parents of twin boys in January.
He is much different with the babies.....

A while ago, I introduced you guys to my 4 feline morons - Peanut, Johnny, Spooky, and Mackerel, as well as our dog Fred, rabbit Cookie, and 2 Gerbils. Well, as if our house wasn't crazy enough, let me introduce to you TANK - our 26 pound cat (Maine Coon I believe) who certainly lives up to his name.

We couldn't pass this cutie pie up - unfortunately he had to be surrendered because his owner had dementia and had to go to live in a nursing home that did not allow animals. Plus poor Tank was a senior cat at 15 years old, so we knew his prospects of adoption were very low, so we thought what the hell - what's one more?

Unfortunately, he's taking a while to get accustomed to the rest of our brood and it doesn't help that Johnny steals his food and tries to invade his personal space! To help Tank at least get accustomed to humans, we set up a cot in the basement so he can at least cuddle up with one of us each night.

For as big of a unit as he is, I swear he's a floofy ninja - I'd be laying in the cot reading a book and suddenly feel a "presence" near me and when I look to my side, he's intently staring at me as if I was his next meal!! It is also funny when he tries to climb up on me, his "girth" prevents him from completely crossing over my body so after struggling a bit, he just gives up halfway and the I have a 26 pound weight on me until he decides to leave. For as old and huge as he is, Tank certainly loves to play with a string and the ubiquitous red laser dot.

We love our large and in charge floofy ninja and hope that he has many more years to live out with us at Chez Jacque Assarie!

Above, Tank's Advertisement from the vet, then Tank settling in at home.

What a distinctive cat! Hope he gets to know the other 4 kitties soon. We have some photos of them, waiting for a good occasion to post.

Puppy malin.jpg

We lost Corney to the rainbow bridge a few months back and even before his transition to beyond the kids have been asking for a puppy. I initially tried to delay until next year but they wore me down. To be fair, of my kids (6,3,1), only the oldest has any type of memories of dogs that were active enough to enjoy. The past couple years with Cornet were more keeping the old man comfortable and not bothering him than enjoying companionship. Another story, but he was a rescue and had a tough life before he was able to rest comfortably, we thought it only fair to accommodate him.
Anyway... they broke me, with the help of my wife to break the stalemate. I only had one request as I gave in to their demands. This dog needs to do more than be a lapsitter. I wanted a dog that had more utility. "What kind of dog do you mean", she asked. I answered, Belgian Malinois. Thinking she would rethink and possibly come back with some delay. She knows me, and thus called my bluff with an ok let's go. We know what we are getting into, and I won't lie I'm excited about the puppy. One of a litter of ten born just a month ago, we will be picking him up next month and preparation has already begun. Including the naming contest. We hope to have the name down to a top ten by the end of July so we can get to the business of naming and training.

We don't have them yet but the family that has them have sent pictures. I've attached the puppy as well as pics of Mom and Dad. Dad is about 85 lbs and mom weighs in about 75. So we expect him to be a good sized boy.

I'm not sure what constraints the post has but in the dad pic you can see mom standing behind him if you'd like to save space.

Thank you,

Inogame

Sorry that your family lost Corney. The new puppy is adorable. Dad and Mom are impressive. I'm guessing that Puppy will be a project!

Hello, KT! What's a MoMe without a mascot? Or a masCAT?

This skinny little fella was quite friendly until he figured out we didn't have anything interesting to feed him.

He doesn't count as a pet, I guess, but he provided a few minutes of entertainment in the "Entertainment District" where we Morons were gathered on Saturday.

Thanks for faithfully hosting the pet thread! I always enjoy reading it.

Emmie

A Moron MasCAT! I like it!

These 2 jokers have been featured before, but it's been awhile.

The miscreant in the box is Bingley, who really should have been named Wickham or Willoughby. He was helping me pack to move from Iowa to Wyoming, a little over 3 years ago. We have since moved again. He's a great little traveler. Bing turned 5 years old this week.

I ran across the other photo while rereading my texts with Jesse from a couple years ago. He thought it was pet thread worthy, but I forgot to send it in at the time. Bing must have got into the Valu-Rite. The gray and white boy was Gonzo. I lost him to cancer in April 2022, about 2 months after Jesse died. G and J had a strong bond based on mutual respect and tuna. Bing and I miss them both.

Bing has been a big help since my mom came to live with me. He took to her right away and she thinks he can do no wrong.

Thank you for the pet thread. I often miss reading it "live" but always go back to see what I missed.

Susan
"screaming in digital"

Condolences for your losses last year. Glad you still have Bing to help you with the care of your mom.

Hello from Virginia! Long time lurker here. Big fan of the Saturday PetThread, I enjoy animals much more than people. I have never commented before, but thought that this would be the appropriate time to do so. This is Magick, one of our rescue kittens. A unique kitteh for sure, she was the only cat that would suffer the attention of our 4-year-old son. He became her person, and that bond lasted until this past weekend, when we had to say goodbye. She was 19 1/2. Needless to say, my son was devastated at her loss.

janh

So sorry that you and your family, especially your son, have lost beautiful Majick. It is so hard. Please extend our condolences to your family.

7 We've been without a dog for over two years. We put off getting another until I had a series of health matters taken care of. Yesterday, we learned the local animal shelter had a little Bichon, named Precious. She's almost 15 years old and was turned in because the owner was too infirm to take care of her anymore. Two hours later she was ours. Her name is appropriate: she's a little sweetheart. She spends most of the day napping, not a surprise given her age. But she loves to take walks and ride in the car. She actually prances on her walks. She is pretty much deaf but her eyes and nose work just fine. Precious is getting used to the house. Considering that in the course of a week she has gone from a life long home to the shelter and now to us, we think she is adjusting very well. Her main hobby for now is arranging a towel on her pad to enhance her naps. Another pleasant surprise, she had to be coaxed up and down stairs a couple of times. Now she is going up and down easily.

It seems 'right' to have a dog in our life again. (BTW, book thread people know I am a Tolkien fanatic but Precious' name is just a coincidence.)

10 It's always a shame when a pet's owner can no longer take care of it. I'm glad Tank is able to find a good home.

My cat Allie had a similar experience with her previous owner. The owner had a stroke and could no longer take care of Allie. The owner's sister was desperate to find Allie a home. I somehow drew the short straw.

But Allie has finally settled in somewhat. She's quite adorable, but doesn't like to be around the other cats, so she spends her time in my library surrounded by great literature.

13 Cool this morning with a light breeze; on the front porch, my first cup of coffee, dog and cat just hanging out nearby, blue skies, cicadas roaring and birds singing. I've had worse moments.

We don't let Daisy the overly-affectionate Malinois run free all the time, much as I would like to. She still runs at the mower, and tries to herd moving vehicles, so when there's activity, she's usually tied out, on the leash, or inside.

This morning I was going to take her for a walk, as usual, but as it was quiet and no activity expected, I set her loose and we took our walk untethered. She led me most of the way, then I was too slow and she had to bolt off into the shrubs or around the bend. I walked on back, sat on the front porch, and it wasn't two minutes until she raced up, or actually past, and then turned and came back. I had the towel to dry her off and she came right over for that. Good dog. Did not run out to the pasture, did not drag home some kind of kill, did not get deep into the mud. Might have to keep her!

24 This week I learned something that might be useful to other pet owners. On Thursday our dog, Luna, started to exhibit symptoms of a UTI. I thought we were going to have to take her to the vet until I did some research online and discovered that you can give dogs D Mannose supplements for UTIs. (The theory is that D Mannose prevents e. coli, the most common cause of UTIs, from binding to the urinary tract.)

I've been taking D Mannose successfully for human female UTIs for the last four years so I always have some capsules around. Found a suggested dog dosage of .5 grams per 20 pounds and within 8 hours she was completely back to normal.

Other folks said D Mannose also works for cats, but I can't testify to that from personal experience. A lot of people said that their pets had failed to respond to antibiotics after years of UTIs but D Mannose did the trick. Check it out if you have pet with a similar problem.

27 I have mentioned before (I think it was on an early Pixy thread) that my son puts out food for some stray cats that show up periodically. One little female gave birth to a kitten on his doorstep, then ran off with it. He didn't see the mother for about a month, and then no baby with her. He was sad to think the baby had probably died.

Until a couple months later, when she brought the baby to meet him. He was thrilled. He still feeds them when he sees them and they will sometimes let him pet them.

Here's the problem: Mom keeps bringing him dead birds as a thank-you. She even left a couple in his jeep when he had the top off. Thankfully, that had slowed down. Until he got another "gift" two days ago, on his front door stoop.

A dead rat.

So he has quite a graveyard in his backyard now, and he is wondering if there is any way he can discourage this. He's going away in a few days for about a week and is really hoping not to come home to a pile of decomposing rodents that have been moldering in the Tennessee heat. Any suggestions?

29 I love the story about Tank. There is something special about adopting a senior pet, isn't there. That's one reason why our last four have been senior adoptions. Bless you for taking on Tank. He sounds like a hoot! And the name Tank The Cat makes me smile.

31 Brutus the tuxedo cat--who was featured in the Pet Thread some years ago--has developed some sort of low-pitched groan when he exhales and his appetite has been on a rollercoaster. I've been giving him antibiotics for about 10 days now with no real improvement. At nearly 18 years old, he may not even survive being anesthetized as a prerequisite for being properly diagnosed (he wanted to murder the vet for simply being in the room when I brought him in a few weeks ago). I'll be taking him back in on Tuesday and will either be bringing back a recovering geriatric kitty or an urn. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, etc.

38 Inogame — owned as I have been for over a year by a Malinois, the pix of mom & pop really resonate with me. Daisy's coloration is lighter, but that face is one I see every day (starting around sunrise, whining next to me).

Found running loose, no chip or ID, but a collar; nobody seemed to be looking for her. The kids who found her running on the highway brought her to us and this cute little dog licked my face and jumped into our lives. Did not know what we were in for.

When we see Malinois puppies, it's kind of sad, because we didn't get to raise Daisy and train her for her first year or so. It's been great to see how she learns… and teaches us!

43 Ever have a pet test your patience, or your temper?
Yesterday I was cleaning up and found a piece of an upright bass. Then I remembered I had that bass, on a stand, when my tuxedo cat jumped on it to get to a higher spot. Only what happened is that she tipped over the bass, which, if you've ever held one, you know that it is under a lot of tension from the strings. The bass ended up in about 25 parts. Plus it made that wonderful "el kabong" sound when it shattered.
That was about 12 years ago, the tuxedo cat lived to age 21 until we had it put to sleep.
It was my fault for not using a sturdier stand.
I still have the bass, which I repaired.

44 Afternoon, all,

I've always heard that pre-hunting noise cats make described as "chattering." I've had lots of cats who chirped in some way, to greet me usually, but it was a much briefer and softer noise without the use of teeth, a kind of "Mrrp."

Wolf, the late great black longhair, used to make the chattering sound as he sat in the window and watched birds or squirrels.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 22, 2023 04:20 PM (omVj0)

45 My cats sometimes make the chittering noise when they see a rabbit/squirrel/bird in the yard.

47 Come to think of it, Tank looks much like my late Wolf. But Wolf only got to 14 lbs., not fat. He and red tabby Part-Coon Arizona were the only cats I've had who reached that size. Even Chekov D. Siberian's top weight was 12. I've never known a cat who even approached 20, let alone 26.

Adopting a senior cat is also something I've never done, unless unknowingly. When I adopted little Oreo the longhair tuxedo cat from a cat show, the Coon breeder lady told me the cat was 5 years old. A vet visit indicated that she was probably older than that. She lived 6 more years, so she might have been 11, or much older. I'd choose a senior or near-senior; I was considering that when the current kittens swam into my ken.

Our cat when I was a boy, Rusty the shorthaired red tabby, was a good mouser, and would leave his kills on Mom's dining table chair. Didn't freak her out any -- she grew up on a farm. The cats I've had since were all hunters, yes, but they ate what they killed and left almost nothing behind.

51 If the cheetah video is for real, yes, she does sound like a bird. Cheetahs are only nominally cats, you know -- they are not in the same genii, not Panthera or Felis, and they don'y have retractable claws -- in that feature they are more like dogs. So I'm not too surprised that they don't roar like lions or "scream" like pumas.

Miss Linda had a coupon, and Petco was offering buy one-get one on Instinct Raw Boost treats, so I grabbed two 6-oz. packets of those (which Dagny loves and Stirling will eat) for $9.

60 Notorious, I found a place that sells them and they are not imported from China. They are marvelous. Check out Citarella.

61 cats are so interesting

my little bengal boy does a LOT of chirping it's very cute! he's mouthy in general tho. not a quiet cat!

but they mimic and this isn't something I knew about cats? it's fun to try to get him to mimic a motion - after a while he will do it. he's probably like "wtf is wrong with this lady why does she keep moving her hand like that?!? I guess I should do it too I dunno..."

but the best is I'm working on his meows (plus mimicking) and it's sort of working. he has a specific meow now to call me! he would meow at me for breakfast and I'd go "Mom! Mom! Mom" making fun of him and now I swear the sounds he makes to get me are sounding more and more like "mom." it's like he is trying to sync up with me even tho I'm a very weird tall cat (I guess). not sure if they know we're not also cats?

crazy! anyway cats are very smart in their own way

62 A few days ago a young robin (not Batman's little buddy] fluttered out its nest and landed right in front of Paisley's nose I said NO and she didn't. I was proud of her restraint.

63 Thanks for the kind words about adopting Precious. We just got in from a walk. She really does prance, obviously enjoying the walk, tail wagging, and noticing any movement. On the grass in the yard she sometimes romps. I'm impressed. Our 'geriatric' girl is moving better than her geriatric dad. We are already making plans for longer walks. If she gets tired, she is small enough to easily pick up and carry.

I've seen it said that they think of us as being like their mothers -- a much larger but affectionate creature who plays with them, grooms them, and gives them food. On the other hand, a theory says the reason they bring us still-living prey is that they are trying to teach us to hunt -- which is something Mom Cat does, not her kittens. I dunno.

Stirling I think considers me to be a mom-figure, with his milk-treading on my arm. Maybe it was because his mother died early. None of the Siberians has done the milk-treading thing -- maybe because they stay with their mothers and the rest of the cattery until they've outgrown the behavior.

I most definitely will. Thank you!

Yeah, that's another term for it. Stirling as a small kitten tried to nibble my arm like a wingless vampire bat, and I discouraged that, but the treading he still does. It's flattering that your cat thinks of you as a mother.

69 The answer to the rodent and bird kills piling up would be to now befriend a vulture or two. Black or turkey, makes no difference. You'll thank me.

72 Cool pets as usual (loved the video of Daisy. Wow; a beauty and soooo energetic.)
Little news here from my two kitties. They’re loving the summer heat, lolling on the back step, occasionally hiding in a “blind” of hostas. Every time I try to get a cute photo Reina moves away, of course.

73 May the Lord bless your family if you are kind enough to take in older animals who need you the most and I share the great hope of being reunited with our beloved animals when we all pass as we must.

74 Love the pet thread this week. The Malinois puppy doesn't look much like his parents yet, so he looks like he has lots of changes coming soon. Beautiful dogs.

75 Just got in from the lake and had to check out the Pet Thread. Thank you so much, KT for continuing the good work. Great looking group of moronimals.

76 Afternoon, all,

I've always heard that pre-hunting noise cats make described as "chattering." I've had lots of cats who chirped in some way, to greet me usually, but it was a much briefer and softer noise without the use of teeth, a kind of "Mrrp."

Wolf, the late great black longhair, used to make the chattering sound as he sat in the window and watched birds or squirrels.

One of my cat's is a female, who slept by my broken arm until it healed so she's my health care provider. I noticed recently that if I cough too much she chatters at me whenever I do it, so I have to break out the cinnamon candy to fight the throat irritation I get.

If you have even a simple photo editor try taking pictures from farther off before she moves and crop them down. Most cameras have way more pixels than is needed for a sharp pictures.
