Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

It's time to review the subject of hypnotizing chickens.

A chicken can be hypnotized, or put into a trance, with its head down near the ground, by drawing a line along the ground with a stick or a finger, starting at the beak and extending straight outward in front of the chicken. If the chicken is hypnotized in this manner, it will continue to stare at the line, remaining immobile for as long as 30 minutes. Other methods of inducing this state are also known. Ethologists refer to this state as 'tonic immobility' i.e. a natural state of semi-paralysis that some animals enter when presented with a threat,[1][2][3] which is probably a defensive mechanism intended to feign death, albeit rather poorly.[4]

That is the type of chicken hypnosis I am familiar with. You may not need to put the chicken's head near the ground. Just draw the line. Useful for photographing chickens.

One technique of hypnosis is to hold the chicken face up with its back on the ground, and then run a finger downwards from the chicken's wattles to just above its vent. The chicken's feet are exposed, which allows easy application of medication for foot mites, etc. Clapping hands or giving the chicken a gentle shove will waken it.

Probably the most relevant technique for owners of pet chickens. But following are a few interesting anecdotes on hypnotizing chickens:

Notable practitioners
Al Gore. . said that people in his native state of Tennessee would sometimes hypnotize chickens by placing the chicken's head on the ground and drawing circles around it with a finger or a stick, causing the chicken to try to follow the motion.[8]

Werner Herzog was "known to hypnotize chickens; he also hypnotized the cast of his 1976 film Heart of Glass".[9]

Steve Fairnie, a 1980s British musician, advised: "You have to dominate the chicken and be right above it staring into its eyes. Then it will either go under or it will viciously attack you, so you have to be a bit careful...".[10]

You have to be a bit careful. Heh.

And there are several references to hypnotizing chickens in culture. Thus Spoke Zarathustra, movies, music,

The United States military, when trying to avoid divulging information, gives reporters briefings with 25 minutes of intentionally dull PowerPoint presentations and 5 minutes left at the end for questions from anyone who is still awake. The presentations are called hypnotizing chickens.

Well. Our little backyard chickens are famous.

Back in April, Eromero sent in a couple of memorable photos. We have seen some black cats lately, but this photo is distinctive:

madisonrr.jpg

Then there's this photo:

madisonpppr.jpg

And this one is new:

maddy n pepper.jpg

There's a reason that we're repeating a couple of photos:

MadisonTheCat, legs in casts 4 years ago. The look on her face says 'Can't you see I'm using the bathroom!'

And then with her sister Pepper dog.

Last summer, MadisonTheCat seems to be telling her sister Pepper 'That's my box!'.

Pepper fell asleep July 5th. Madison is still looking for her. So is Mrs. E, girls are so sensitive. Snif.

Eromero

So sorry that you, Mrs. E and Madison have lost Pepper. I don't think that the girls are the only ones who are sensitive.

Attached is Molly (Black Dog Three) on her first day at our house. She is almost 3 years old now and still acting like a puppy.

Mister Scott.

Awww. Molly as a puppy! Too much!

yorkie n ct.jpeg

We're training a Yorkshire Terrier puppy. Simba (a she - kids named her) was an impulse buy by wife's best friend, who'd lost her 18 yr old Persian two weeks before. Long story, but with 3 young boys adding a puppy to the mix was overwhelming for Mom, though she'd bonded already (after like 30 seconds). So we offered to housetrain her with the understanding she was going back to them.

Lord Sunny was curious, then interested, now best play buddy - no cuddling yet. They chase each other through the house with wild abandon. Which is odd because Sunny is absolutely vicious with SD24's cat, so we keep them segregated.

Their favourite place to play/hang out is the bathroom. Sunny had the high ground and just slowly lowered his rump into the toilet, really not caring about the water. Crazy beasts.

Marty

What a great photo!

Wonder if you can hypnotize turkeys?

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals, especially for those who are suffering; for animals that are overworked, underfed, and cruelly treated; for all the wistful creatures in captivity, that beat their wings against bars; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted, or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them, we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the Merciful.

5 Ajax got real sick last week. Throwing up and diarrhea. He stopped eating. Had called the vet and they recommended boiled chicken and brown rice. He ate that well enough the first day, then stopped eating that. Was about to take him to the vet when a friend recommended baby food.

Worked. Worked really well. He sucked that stuff down like ambrosia. Started getting stronger and I started mixing dry food in. Now he seems to be doing better than before he got sick. Still want to take him in to get checked out, but very relieved. He scared the shit out of me there for a bit.

21 As I was 6 minutes into my Saturday morning pedaling, I heard a familiar grhowl (a mixed growl and howl) outside the back window. Sure enough, it was Creamsickle, the huge orange and white feral cat with lynx ears and a big underbite calling me to come hang out with him for a bit (and bring treats), which I did because I always do. I'll send a pic or 2 in next week. How a feral cat can get this big (bigger than any cat i've ever seen in real life) in a semi-urban area astounds me. He's very handsome but also very, very timid. He'll eat out of my hand but has only once rubbed against me in 2 years. Still, it's cool to see him out there calling me. Meow.

34 Afternoon, folk,

Dagny La Siberienne is getting to be more affectionate, or at least not as standoffish. Well, judge for yourself. I stretched out for my Saturday afternoon nap, and within seconds, *thump* as she landed on the bed and curled up behind my legs.

Fast forward to two hours later as I wake up. She's still stretched out next to me. Who knows, as she gets older she may want to slide under the covers next to me as Marie-Antoinette did (only in afternoons, never at night).

Stirling the big black cat has milk-treaded me twice today, and a couple of times this past week. I guess maybe he hasn't outgrown that behavior, or me.

35 Mr Trouble has managed to injury his tail. Can't lift the bottom part up. I suspect an infected bite as I don't think I've had a cat break their tail. If infected, it should burst and can be cleaned. He won't let me touch it and won't come inside. Still trying to sort out what to do. Might be able to get him into the big cat carrier for a vet trip. He's still eating and has been hanging around.

40 Shelters? I can only recall visiting one where I came home with a new companion: mid-June of 1983. Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 and I went to the local ASPCA on Saturday morning , definitely "cat shopping" as we called it. A lady greets us: "Have I got a kitten for you!" A fuzzy red tabby with white chest and paws beamed up at us from his cage with the air of, "Take ME home -- I'm a great deal!"

And so he was. $30, the price then, brought me 16.5 years of friendship and exasperation with the (possibly) part-Maine Coon I named Arizona. (The kitten fuzzies turned into a long flowing coat, the huge ears and paws into 14 lbs. of not-fat, impressive adult cat.

41 Back in my contractor days we dd a job for a millionaire couple whose wife had rescued a dachshund that hated men, and had it's own room in their 47 room mansion. It went berserk at us, working outside, foam all over windows, just crazy. She told us she could only be with it and get only, it would attack any human male.
I would not have hesitated to smoke that dog.
That was a fucked up place. The people were strange.

42 Yay! Daisy the magnificent Malinois awakened me from my mid-day respite in time for the Pet Thread. Brilliant doggie!

Ony the old black cat has finally been allowing Daisy to come right up to her, nose-to-nose, and even give Ony a "kiss." Without kitty growls! It's nice!

Ony has been exploring outside a lot these days. Which is fine with me. I dislike cleaning the litter box. Don't like her going out at night, but she usually doesn't even want to.

Ony has also taken to sleeping in our bed, which she hadn't been doing for a long time. Usually not a problem, but sometimes there's a twitch of tail or lick of tongue and I have to shove her down from between our heads.

I usually tell doggie tails. I thought Ony deserved a turn.

Nice Pet Pals pictured. thanks for the post, KT

Sure, I want to miss him. I mean, I want to miss wimmens' NBA more, but I have a nearly unlimited supply of no fucks to give.

Talking about stupid "sports" to televise: was at the hotel for beer and chicken wings on Wednesday, and it looked like there was a hockey game on. But something wasn't quite kosher. The players looked like cockroaches skittering around the ice. Well, what it was, was two soibois playing some sort of computer simulation hockey. Faaaaack!

44 True, I visited the Denver Dumb Friends League, their equivalent of the SPCA, after AZ passed away. For a donation you could have a lucite plaque with up to 15 words on it mounted in their entryway. It took me a while to come up with the inscription:

"ARIZONA 1983-1999 I handled quarters & rations; you handled the rest."

I was tempted to adopt a long-haired white-and-black male there a couple of years later -- but it was two days before I was to move back to The Swamp. So I passed. With luck, he got adopted and lived as good a life as Arizona did.

And we saw a silver tabby Maine Coon named Rembrandt at the local shelter a couple of years after Katrina. Somebody grabbed him that day.

47 We've noticed an increase in stray/unfamiliar cats around our property over the last couple weeks. 3 strays have been in our yard, or somewhere on the property. It's been years since we've seen other than our cats around.

The thing is, these strays seem to be well fed, or were and in good shape. So, I'm thinking they're being discarded somewhere nearby and they either sense our cats, smell the food or something that draws them here.

Whatever the case, it's a problem right now. I've got 4 felines I care for as it is and don't need more.

50 I was planning to get chickens in May, but the garden took over my time. As it turns out, the chicken coop I'd decided to build has some serious drawbacks. Sometimes chickens don't use the facility as planned. Maybe a proper walk-in shed is the way to go. Then I'll have a place for the feed as well.

51 MadisonTheCat is very glossy and impressive.

My only experience with one animal missing another was after big red tabby Rusty passed away. This happened at Mom's place, and I'd already moved out, so I didn't see it. But Rusty and Lil Bit, the gray dilute tortoiseshell I'd brought home one day about four years before, had formed a solid brother-sister bond, I guess. According to Mom, Lil Bit spent most of the day trotting all over the house, looking for Rusty -- and calling, not something she usually did.

52 Martini Farmer, a service I provide for my local SPCA is trapping feral cats (which I do by way of some Havahart traps, which don't injure the cats). If summoned by the SPCA I set the traps and transport the feral to Animal Care and Control where they are neutered and evaluated for possible future adoption.
I've captured entire colonies of feral cats.
I also manage to get a fair amount of raccoon and skunk. State law says they must be released right there. No relocation allowed.

He had personality and a half right from the start. He was young, and we were not sure he had the practice of the litterbox down completely yet. So the first night we penned him in the kitchen with his box. There was no door, so I propped cardboard against the door opening, arranged higher (I thought) than he could jump.

Ha. I woke up the next morning with him purring on the pillow near my face.

Later he also got out of his cardboard carrier when I was driving him back from the SPCA (3 months' medical treatment was included in the price). He just strolled around the inside of the car, not worried at all, while I hunted for a place to pull over so I could stuff him back into the box and hold it shut.

Mrs. E figured he was abandoned, so a week before we lost Pepper we had Walter (he's an upsidedown M-cat) fixed, vaxed, and tested. He went straight from the vet to a well known local moron who thinks he's the cat's pajamas. Calls him Wally. Huge paws. Funny how things like this happen. Like it's meant to be. But sometimes quite entertaining. Occasionally, a small snake would make the fatal mistake of getting in their coop. One hen would grab it, starting to swallow it while the other chickens chased her. In one case, another grabbed the snake by the tail and pulled it out of the throat of the first hen.

66 4 I want to get a goat. But goats are infamously troublesome and every 'pet' I've ever had had been an exceptional problem so I'm sure I'd get an exceptionally unpleasant goat.
I know what I'm saying.

70 If any of you have MeTV: They are showing the two-parter "Waste" on The Rifleman -- a film noir-style Western adventure that might well be the series' very best. Starts in about a minute!

71 Not exactly a pet, but I have an injured sea lion laying in the dock alongside my boat. Looks like he had a bad run-in with a spinning propellor.

I called the harbor patrol but they already know about him. They're sending someone.

76 I'm fascinated by 'hypnotic chickens.' Would be a good band name. Our rural neighbors have chickens. I'll have to ask if they've tried to hypnotize them.

They'll probably think I'm weird.

Cute as kittens are, they will drive you nuts. A young adult who has settled down some from the kitten crazies days could be a good bet. And since most people want kittens, you could rescue a young adult who might not have as good a shot at adoption.

Neighbors did the nice secure chicken coop thing and had three Rhode Island egg layers. They went away for a while and had someone watch over them. Said person did not latch coop door properly. All dead. I really don't *get* how some animals like fox kill just to kill.

She was. Rescued, we were told, from some kids who were about to set her on fire, adaptable and highly intelligent (she loved walking on a harness and leash and knew her name if someone said it on TV), she had a ton of safe adventures and enjoyed her life.

86 nd bring treats), which I did because I always do. Meow.

Growing up someone brought around a lifelong unspayed mostly feral tom cat who had to be restrained by a chain from chasing and beating up dogs. He was huge, especially in the head and shoulders, covered in scars. Years of testosterone and fights with other males built him up. Once he was fixed he calmed right down and was a good kitty for the rest of his life.
