Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Did all of our pets make it through the fireworks?

Thank you for the weekend threads!

K.T.:

Sadly, our good and faithful Yorkie, Sparky, made his final trip to the
vet at the end of June after a long life with us (16 years). Here he is
in a pic from several years ago, being chauffeured around on a bike
trail by the missus. She is pretty broken up about it yet.

He was a GOOD dog.

Thanks,

The Neon Madman

So sorry that you and your wife have lost Sparkie. What a good dog. What a sweet photo. Please pass on our condolences to your wife.

K.T.:

Greetings from Florida! Big AoS Pet Thread fans here and couldn't imagine our weekends without reading all the fine submissions. We've got one ourselves this week.

Me and the wife have probably had 35+ cats in our lives (a few for her before we met 36 years ago, and MANY since we got married). All have distinct personalities and backgrounds, but we recently lost a very sweet, precious cat named Ana, aka Empress Anastasia, Ana Banana, Nanner, and many other goofy names.

She was rescued by a wonderful young woman/cat rescuer from near a dumpster behind an Italian restaurant during the Kung Flu lockdowns when she went to get some takeout. Poor thing was starving, had lots of injuries from other cats, but was so sweet and was crying out for someone to rescue her. One of her eyes was messed up pretty bad as well. Took her in to get her TNVR'ed (where they spay and clip an ear to show they have been treated) only to find out, after the ear clipping, that she'd already been spayed. She was someone's pet - who knows how she ended up on the streets. We fostered her for a while, trying to save her eye (it was too far gone and had to be removed) and decided to adopt her since she and I fell in love with each other.

She was MY cat (or I should say, I was HER human!) and the other cats knew not to try and sit in my lap or sleep by my head. Quirky, funny, fussy, and quite imperious, she loved nothing more than to sit in my lap, or stay on our porch and watch the world, albeit with just one eye. She was our little Pirate Cat. She also had a most . . . . pitiful affectation - any time we had any food that even hinted at Italian in smell, she went crazy for it - she would not leave me alone and would try to eat pasta, tomato sauce, pizza, you name it! Must have been from what that was what she was surviving on in the dumpster, poor thing.

We discovered later in our time with her that she loved "walkabout" where she one day just ran out the porch door into our fenced yard with my wife and hung out with our chickens. The chickens soon sort of "adopted" her and we called her "the grey chicken" from then on. She never bothered them. She also loved car rides, went camping with us once (she LOVED it), and even allowed us to put a harness on her and take her into the local park and forest for hikes.

Unfortunately after 3 years she developed very aggressive oral cancer and we had to say goodbye to her. She was probably about 8-10 years old when we adopted her. We have ZERO regrets taking her in and I highly encourage everyone out there to take a chance on a non-kitten or puppy if you have a place in your home and heart for a hard-luck story like this. God gave us 3 wonderful (and sometimes frustrating) years with this precious creature and I thank Him for it.

Rest easy, Ana - you will always have a special place in my heart.

Greywolf

Thanks for taking such good care of Ana. Sounds like a cat who was full of personality!

11 Mr Trouble has a spot in the weeds at the back of the place, where he hangs out part of the time. Jake likes him, which is something since Trouble put a claw in his eye not too long ago. He likes it best when Jake and I hang out with him. He won't come in yet. He got one foot inside the door today. That should change when it gets cold. Still don't know if he was dumped or just not well cared for. But he is photogenic.

14 I feed a cat at my mom's former retirement home that is part of a group of cats that the residents feed in the courtyard. He usually meets me far away from the courtyard near the parking lot around noon everyday. Now one of the other cats has figured out Buddy's sweet deal and has muscled in where I now feed her too. Both have their ear clipped . Other than having to live in the elements they are living their best life. And since the cats are being fed already I just do this because my mom would have wanted me to continue to feed the cat her and I made friends with when I visited my mom everyday. I do upgrade the food 😀

34 I'm trying an experiment this weekend...

Allie has been isolated in my library for several months. I keep the door closed so that the other cats don't bother her. Yesterday, I decided to keep the door open to see how they would interact.

They've all been surprisingly well behaved. A bit of hissing and growling from Allie when Kaylee goes into the library to investigate, but Allie has been quite calm and relaxed for the most part.

No fighting at all. I even left the library door open overnight to see what might happen. Quiet night all around.

Perhaps they are finally getting used to each other...

36 Afternoon, folken,

That's a great photo of Robert the black cat. I wish I could catch Stirling in such a pose. Black cats in my experience are the most easygoing and adaptable, and the smartest I ever knew, the late Marie-Antoinette, was black too. In fact Greywolf's Ana sounds a lot like M-A, who was also rescued as a young adult -- in Jackson Square from some kids who were about to set her on fire. So we were told, anyway, and it's made for a good story over the last thirty years.

Adopting an adult, a non-kitten, is almost always a good idea. An adult cat's personality and looks are pretty much formed, so you know what you're getting, and you don't have to deal with the kitten crazies.

38 I'm feeling kinda bad. We have some great neighbors, but I was griping to my husband about a minor thing one day and I think they may have overheard me.

They have added a new puppy to the household. Their training technique involves high volume yelling and a high tech collar. Now, they can train their puppy however they want, but sometimes we get tired of hearing constant and high volume "Fido, come!" yelled over and over again (because Fido still doesn't come when he's called).

Ever since I griped to my husband, the yelling has diminished significantly. That's nice, but I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings.

They are naturally loud-voiced people, especially when communicating with non-verbal creatures like babies or pets. I guess volume is supposed to help the message get through to beings with limited understanding. She yells, "I love you!" to her baby niece but fortunately her niece knows not to be alarmed at the volume. Niece just coos and giggles.

But really, these are awesome neighbors who are easy to live next to. Just some loud puppy training.

41 As for my livestock: Dagny has recovered well in the two weeks since her snip; the fuzzy fur is starting to grow back and cover her scar.

This past week I had pretty much concluded that they have outgrown their kitten days -- except for hyper-excited playing -- and that Stirling won't knead me any more and Dagny will always be a little standoffish. Lo and behold, this morning Stirling spent a good while milk-treading my arm again, and Dagny curled up and slept with me during my nap this p.m. Cats will surprise you.

45 Photographing black cats is like photographing a starless sky. It's generally hard to tell if it's in focus or not.

I read not loo long ago that people were reluctant to adopt black cats, because they wouldn't photograph well for selfies and other social media stuff. That makes me sad for the cats these people DID adopt, as they were clearly just a novelty for them and would probably be neglected (at best).

48 Pax the cat is having a hard week. The girl spawn has banished the cat from her bed. Pax wakes her up stomping on her head and girl is tired of it. Now Pax is left to sleep on the floor. We are currently hosting an invasion of ants so the food bowl has been moved to a different location. If that wasn't enough, we got a different litter box that uses potty pads and pellets. Pax doesn't seem to like using this for poop. She uses it for pee but yowls to go outside when she needs to poo. She has been spending a lot more time on my lap.

49 Spent the 4th with dear friends and their 15 year old Jack Russell. "Jack" has been around almost as long as Little has. This time out I noticed how frail and unsteady on his feet he's become. Surprised by how suddenly the years have taken hold.

Years back he would dig up his yard hunting for gophers. Found one or two on occasion. I'd sometimes sneak up on him while he buried his face in a freshly dug hole and snatch him up to my chest. He never did learn to watch his back...

The Rescue Cats know we are about to visit the room and they all rush to aggregate by the door. As soon as the door opens: Cole rushes in, so fast that we often don't notice. Lately his sister Ashley joins him. They are very good with kittens. The babies rush out, they really want to explore. Ashley and Cole are Luna's babies. Luna was pregnant when she arrived here. Beautiful black cat, extremely friendly to us and a terror to all our other cats. Then she had these 2 beautiful kittens while hiding in the study. One day she presented them just to my daughter and me. A few weeks later she came into the lounge herding the 2 babies - formal integration into the cat family. She is now very timid and her 2 kids protect her. She'll come in to eat and often one of her kids will sit by the bowl while Mum eats.

56 "Sparky" was also the name of my mother's beloved black cat, the one she had in the years before I was born. He had a small patch of white hairs on his chest. I know, because she kept a sepia-toned studio portrait of him in an 8 x 10 frame on a shelf in our home when I was growing up. Her upstairs neighbor (or landlord?) was a photographer, and in return for her bringing the cat up to rid the place of mice, he did a sitting of Sparky.

Recently I've found a pic of her with him in the back yard of that house dated 1948, and another with him in her arms sitting on the levee (!). I guess he was a good traveler.

Posted by: vmom stabby stabby stabby stabby stabamillion at July 08, 2023 03:13

I was in unawareness as well, vmom. Here's what I found from a reddit post:

You know when cats see something that's not there? That's a greeble. They're like invisible gremlins that like messing with cats.

68 I also wish to know the context of "greebles." Because that is the term my cover artist and I use for "artistic thingamabobs that do not exist in reality." It's a useful term!

I may have a lot of greebles on my book covers ....

Thanks, Gwenn. That was very understandable and I think it was very kind of you to reach out. I will tell her.---

73 "Greebles" sound like the invisible (to humans) Muskies in Spider Robinson's SF novel By Any Other Name. He mentions, in fact, that when our dogs or cats seem to be staring fixedly at nothing in a corner, it's a Musky.

74 I just finished vaccuming. Dagny bushed up her tail and fled, while Stirling, the cat frightened by firework noises, retreated calmly into the living room window behind the drapes and waited for the roaring to be over. He's there now.

76 This is not pet related but it's for Fen. Fen tell your friend with diverticulitis not to eat seeds of any kind including strawberries. Also no nuts. They become irritants stuck in the intestines and cause pain. I hope this is understandable.

Didn't that get debunked? Any doctors in the house?

Wife has had that for years. Corn gave her issues as well.
