Ace of Spades Pet Thread, July 1

saying bye to dog.jpg

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Here are a couple of my kitties: Tutti-frutti helping with my homework and research, and Henrietta in the cabinet on the porch. Both are rescues, TF is 15 and H is 11 this year. Nan in AZ

They look like sweethearts.

angus sf.jpg

This is a pic of Angus, a chihuahua, doxie, terrier mix. He has graced the thread before but I am sending him again because he will cross the Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday this week. He has been a sweet and faithful companion, and a very diligent supervisor for 13 years. He was confident that our kids reported to him, and he would let us know in small ways he had little faith in our parenting. We were always grateful for his support despite his criticism.

He had an instant impact reducing Boy F.'s autistic behaviors and until today remains the boy's only real friend. Losing Angus is going to be a big hit to our family but we will always be grateful for the love (and supervision) he gave us.

Sincerely, San Franpsycho

We are heartbroken at your loss, with you and your family. Keep in touch.

Earlier this week, Brian sent in a message to Misanthropic Humanitarian about an old post here at the Pet Thread:

RileyShastaDakota.png

These are my three fur buddies. Riley (Siberian Husky) has been with me for 12 years. Shasta (Alaskan Husky) is waiting on the rainbow bridge for three weeks, was part of our family for five short years. Dakota is the mix on the left and is my constant companion for the last 6 years. All are rescues.

The two huskies would start howling for their evening treat come 6:30. They won't stop until my wife gives in. She gives in, happily, I might add.

The mix is my McCullogh mini Mac and chews on just about anything. She once shredded a TV remote, has destroyed shoes, socks and even Kong toys don't last long. - Brian

Because recently:

Today is a bittersweet day in my family as we said goodbye to our precious Dakota Belle. She was over 14 and was suffering from cancer.

My youngest son was there with my wife and I. He was her best buddy. She passed in his arms.

She will forever have a smile and was playful with other dogs. She is with the other dogs in this picture, waiting at the rainbow bridge.

Dogs give until there is nothing left except love. She is in our hearts forever.

Your posts help with the healing.

Thank you.

Thanks for sharing, Brian. Sorry for the loss you and your family are feeling. Hope that re-posting your tribute helps.

Hello love the pet thread, this was our temporary foster cat, Toby. We were only able to take him for a few days unfortunately, but he was a sweet and affectionate little guy who loved watching the birds from our front window. He is still looking for his forever home.

Meet Bluebell, the best little hen in the best little henhouse in Texas! * She is a two-year-old blue Plymouth tint from Tractor Supply. Almost every day (except when she's molting) Bluebell lays a delicious, nutritious light brown extra-large egg.

She is an excellent forager and like all of her coop-mates, loves to eat bugs including but not limited to spiders, crickets and grasshoppers. When I throw a bug into the coop Bluebell is most likely to emerge victorious from the hen scrum with the snack in her beak, diving in and shoving others out of the way. If another hen grabs the treat, she will pursue her rival far longer than any of the others and almost always gets at least a grasshopper leg or other piece.

Bluebell loves to scratch in the dirt in search of goodies and is one of the most adventurous outside the coop along with my "golden comet" sex link hens. These are the oldest and they are at the top of the pecking order.

Back in February when we had freezing rain for almost a week, Bluebell found a drowned mouse in a large puddle near the coop (so, nicely refrigerated at about 40 degrees) and evaded my attempts to take it from her. As soon as she got the chance she gulped it down, and once it was gone she smugly waddled back to the coop.

I did not collect her eggs for a couple days.

If Bluebell were a baseball player - for the Boston Red Sox, obviously - her walk-on song could not possibly be anything other than this.

* This is what Bluebell the commenter calls her namesake, so if hogmartin and Alex the Chick the hen want to argue they're on their own.

2 Sad, two departed dogs this week. The only thing wrong with dogs is they don't live long enough.

On the brighter side, at the start, it's notable how they act when we run errands. Wife and I went shopping Thursday, and Sparky acted as if we were abandoning him forever. When we got back, we got the full zoom welcome. Fortunately for him, we're retired, so he doesn't lose us often.

Condolences on Angus and Dakota Belle.

"Not the least hard thing to bear when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away with them so many years of our own lives. Yet, if they find warmth therein, who would grudge them those years that they have so guarded? Nothing else of us can they take to lie upon with outstretched paws and chin pressed to the ground; and, whatever they take, be sure they have deserved."

Afternoon, all! Yes, commenter "dagny, first of her name" inspired the name of my girl Siberian torbie kitten. Not a direct naming-after, no, but the screen name caught my eye a long time ago, and I always said, "Good name for a cat."

The feline Dagny is doing quite well after her snip surgery eight days ago. A little subdued at first, she quickly surged back to being the playful demon-ette she's always been. Though she is a bit more affectionate to me. Probably because Stirling is still over at Miss Linda's. When we bring him back, it should be fun to watch.

29 Nan in AZ, your two felines are handsome. TF in particular -- he/she looks a bit like my late Chekov, though the latter was white-and-black rather than white-and-brown tabby. Maine Coon or Siberian mixes, are they?

30 Not sure if I rescued that baby bird. I thought itwas just adults at the back of the propertyso Jake went after them. One was a baby. I did get him to leave it and it was alive enough to get across the yard

31 Dagny kitten has just climbed up to the cushion next to me on the couch and is grooming. She's not a strongly demonstrative kitten, but she always likes to be where humans are.

By the way, the show on the ticket -- "Stay home and do nothing with my cats, go to bed early" -- sounds pretty good to me during the work week.

33 I was helping my ex run some errands Thursday so I insisted she bring along Maceo ("MAYseeoh"), the Dogbear, my nephmew. (The special needs/rescue cat I sponsored for her during the pandemic.) He's a very chill, observant orange dude who likes to ride in my car (and sheds everywhere). Some cats just take in all the sights wide-eyed from the protection of a car. We had a good time but eventually he wanted the comforting closeness of walls.

35 On the other front, Stirling the black kitten has been at summer camp, so to speak, at Miss Linda's this week. We wanted to give Dagny less reason to gallop around, so she could recover from her surgery. He's due to come back home this evening. Linda says he's been kneading and nuzzling her too, so it's not just me he'll do it to. ("Traitorous -- disloyal --!")

In late '21 and early '22, everyone here had to listen almost daily to the continuing saga of Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat during his last six months. They were endlessly patient and understanding, as you say.

As far as that Bridge: If you've lived with and loved multiple animals, will they all meet you? In my case, I suspect there will be trouble. ("Back off, Black Cat, he's *my* human!" "Stick a fish in it, Fat Boy, he's *mine*!")

Indeed it is. I'm glad I had one of the mobile vet services come out to my place and see to Chekov at the last, so he could pass at his familiar home instead of enduring a ride to the clinic and being handled by scary strangers. San Fran, have you arranged for that too?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 01, 2023 04:24 PM (omVj0)

49 Yay, Pet Thread! Nice pix, and as it must ever be, some sad stories today. 😿

Angus was a great-looking mutt! God bless Boy Franpsycho, may the dog's memory help sustain him.

Nice looking chicken, too. Almost makes me want to raise some. Grandparents used to keep chickens here at Rancho Webworker - I was pretty young, but I remember the smell… and the fun of fetching some fresh eggs.

Not much news from the Daisy Malinois and Ony Kitteh house this week. Daisy has wisely learned to sleep more and stay in the shade during this scorcherous weather. She gets to play fetch some, me trying to keep the game in the shade; she so loves chasing! She's become near-expert in dropping the ball while running so it rolls right to my feet, then snap.snap.snaps her jaws to say, ready!go!throw.the.other! (Two balls required, you see.)

Her signal that she's hit the wall and is ready to quit is, she just won't drop the ball. She has shown herself smart enough to know to quit a little earlier in this heat.

51 Our 18 year old kitteh Scout is still going strong, but she will sometimes go off her feed for a couple of days, and will sometimes have coughing fits (she's part Persian and has a squashy muzzle). I spoil her with the food she likes. She likes some crunchies, but really likes anything that is mushy and smelly (mostly fish-based).

I finally got some good pics of her. I might have to send them in for a future pet thread.

61 FenSpouse said he liked the leaving the dog joke up at the top. I usually don't say too much to the cat because when I leave he's usually asleep on the bed upstairs or asleep somewhere else, but he likes to get exercise from playing with cat toys with FenSon. Favorite toys are various things hanging from a long rod. He likes leaping at them and will also chase if they're pulled on the ground.

63 I've always been leery of having chickens. When I was a kid our neighborhood had a chicken slaughtering party (the hens stopped making eggs). I think it was the smell that to me a little. Not enough to swear off poultry, but it was pretty grim.

65 Had some thunder this past week. I was reminded that Daisy is untroubled by booms and kapows. Dear old Gimli hated booms, thunder or fireworks, and had to be m/l continuously petted & reassured.

Back in Dad's and Granddad's days, there would be much whooping and swimming and firecracking here on the 4th. Many burgers were grilled, and beverages consumed, and sometimes some dumbass, despite all Dad's warnings, would hold a roman candle and have it blow up in his hand and have to be taken to the hospital (thinking of you, late eldest brother).

I don't remember, but I'll bet we left our collie mix Lady at home on those 4ths.

I would love to have a herd of chickens but our dogs would kill them.

I guess I could fence off part of the big back yard for them but I have no clue how that would work in the winter because we have no electric back there and would have to run electricity to the back to heat the coop.

By the time all of that is said and done I am in for over $2,000 without a single egg being laid.

If a trucker doesn't have someone with him ( Sometimes I see what I think are spouses or girlfriends with truckers) it must be good to have a pet along.

71 Our dog, Luna, had her 6th birthday this week--same day as Mel Brooks (97) and Elon Musk (52). She got two different kinds of balls that are apparently her favorite toys EVER! If I put them up at night, she wants one of the balls first thing the next morning.

I'm so happy she likes the toys, but sheesh, dog, give it a rest!

72 What kind of puppy will you get?

We are getting a Belgian Malinois.

Those are handsome dogs and they seem to have big ears, which I find cute.

74 You don't need to heat the coop. Smaller coop, decent number of chickens and deep litter underneath. If you are in an area that freezes a lot, get what they call rose combs. Those are the small, flat combs. If you don't have lights in the coop, production does drop a bit.

You can get electric mesh fencing that runs on a solar charger.

75 They are good looking dogs... and fiercely loyal and protective of the family.

Just in case we need him to bite an ass...

Yes; I had heard they were very protective and loyal as well.

77 I'll send pics when we get the little guy...
kids have a running name list so I hope to have that figured out.
Who do I send pet pics to?

80 When we leave our cat alone for a few days, Mrs928 insists on explaining to him where we are going and when we are coming back. It is odd to me but she insists.

83 Belated follow-up.

So, after bragging earlier how Daisy is unaffected by thunder and such, we started a video from the earlier thread. About thirty seconds in, Daisy started whining loud and mournfully. Ironically, "The Thunderer" by John Philip Sousa.
