Momentous Thread before the Gardening Thread, May 6

Well, I guess today is a momentous day. Did you get up early to watch the coronation of King Charles III?

coronatt.jfif

Or are you perhaps attending the Revolutionary War Weekend at Mount Vernon?

Interesting timing for this event.

rev war weekend.jfif

The Disney Connection

Weirdly, there appears to be a connection between King Charles III and The Walt Disney Company's special privileges at Reedy Creek. Jonathan Turley, April 17:

Disney is used to being its own self-governing boss.

That history may have warped its judgment in attempting this power grab. It is a move that would make the pirates of the Caribbean blush.

The "declaration of restrictive covenants" gives Disney total control over development and even bans the new board from using Disney's name or the names of any of its "fanciful characters."

It added what is called a royal clause, used in England since 1692.

It specified this "Declaration shall continue in effect until 21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, King of England, living as of the date of this declaration."

The Brits were always good at dramatic story lines. Guess Disney adopted one here.

Even Slate mentions this unusual royal clause, quoting the book Married to the Mouse.

Slate.

I think Disney should have stayed out of politics.

Let's not take these things too far. . . .

Poetry and Music

Recessional by Rudyard Kipling

God of our fathers, known of old --
Lord of our far-flung battle line --
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine --
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget--lest we forget!

The tumult and the shouting dies--
The Captains and the Kings depart --
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget--lest we forget!

Far-called our navies melt away--
On dune and headland sinks the fire --
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget--lest we forget!

If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe --
Such boastings as the Gentiles use,
Or lesser breeds without the Law --
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget--lest we forget!

For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard --
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding calls not Thee to guard.
For frantic boast and foolish word,
Thy Mercy on Thy People, Lord!
Amen.

She was crowned quite young, which led to such an epically long reign. Of sorts. I mean, she wasn't actually in power. May Day - and such a beautiful day I decided to take a hop with Taylor in his L-5.
We flew for over an hour - around the lines, over town, up and down. He let me have the stick most of the time. After the flight I watched the 240 fire a few rounds. A beautiful gun - if guns can be called that.

The 240 mm M1 howitzer and the 8-inch gun were the heaviest artillery used in Italy both on the main peninsula beginning in late '43 and at Anzio about halfway through the Sitzkrieg phase.

Smirnoff has a tranny spokesthing that they were associating with to DEI themselves into lower sales like Bud. And again, they got into trouble here because their pet tranny flashes his wedding tackle and rear end to kids and teens during a "protest" at the Texas legislature.

Smirnoff ran to a mic and declared that they no longer have a partnership with this pervert.

When those states can no longer afford to fund the mechanisms of actual government because anyone with an IQ above 70 will have fled in terror, the Blue Union will have an opportunity to buy back those dirt-poor states at dirt-cheap prices, apportion to them legislative representation based on population instead of allowing them the outsized control of the federal government they gained through the bad deal Abraham Lincoln made with them after the Civil War, and rejoin a union that will have acted to safeguard democracy from the lunatic fringe.

In all seriousness, King Charles memorabilia will probably wind up having at least some collector's value since he's too old to have a very long reign. A while back I was at a coin shop talking to one of the guys there, he mentioned that when Elizabeth died he suddenly had a lot of people coming in trying to sell her coinage. We both agreed that there might have been some added value there except for the small problem that being the sovereign of 30 countries for the better part of a century made them just about the most common thing the world has ever known.

345 So the personal bodyguard lady has a cool hat, but she's not wearing power armor or dual wielding miniguns? And no battlemechs in sight? Lame.

If I ever exercise the royal claim that my ancestors supposedly once had and become King Plus, you have my solemn promise that the coronation will be way more awesome and hardcore. There will be battlemechs.

347 I think I got two rounds of tests because I was sick twice and my corporate frenz wanted it done before they'd let me back on site. It was found that Dr. Fauci IS the father of one of them, but not the other.

348 I need a new laptop (not a Mac). Should I find one that runs Win10 or just deal with getting Win11? I'd prefer Win10. I don't have any problem with it.

Also, the Marines released the name of the man who subdued Jordan on the subway.

If I were to be shot, I think a hospital is the best place for it to happen.

Same reason Camilla used Queen Mary's crown instead of getting a new one.

359 Ah, yes. The generation lamenting the fascist regime of Queen Elizabeth, no future, she ain't no human being, are now waving their little union Jack's, and crying tears of patriotism into their Queen Elizabeth tea cups, pining for that once green and pleasant land... limey bastards.
