How can we slow the crumbling of western civilization?

aoc deplatformms.jfif

John Hayward:

Of course 'deplatforming works.' Fascism works. Totalitarianism works. Terrorism works. That's why people keep embracing such ideologies, even though our culture nominally considers them to be among the greatest of human evils.

In short, FORCE works. Persuasion is difficult, frustrating, and often ineffective. Introducing any amount of force to a system founded on principles of liberty, self-government, individual choice, and private ownership of capital will inevitably tip the scales. . .

The generation that holds most of our political, corporate, and media power was taught all their lives that fascism is the ultimate evil - but they sank very easily into a fascist system. Today they quiver with glee at using combined state/corporate power to crush dissent. . .

Developing and using coercive power has a powerful allure. People who think they have great wisdom and absolute moral stature, who view themselves as messiahs on a mission with time running out, will never settle for force-free systems that require the consent of the governed.

"Democracy" is always a train they ride until they reach their ideological destination, and then they hop off and dynamite the train behind them. They think a free republic whose citizens can say "no" will never get important things done quickly enough. Only coercion "works."

Of course, all of these people will howl with outrage if force is used against THEM. . . .

They're blind to how pervasive authoritarian tendencies can be.
@cenkuygur is complaining about the Dems' decision to have no Presidential debates, but that's a natural decision from folks who are gleeful about forcing Tucker Carlson out.

Everyone thinks the guillotine will never be used on them.

More Deplatforming and Censorship

Tucker Carlson is not the only person out there who has been the subject of "deplatforming" lately.

There are a couple of officials elected to local offices to whom I send links to articles and the occasional AoSHQ post. They often use these in social media communications with their constituents. They are not my representatives, but I know people in their districts. The first is a woman who is pretty "based". The second is a man who has a lot of the right ideas, but who works with the establishment more often. Both have responsibilities regarding K-12 education and the latter has responsibilities concerning state funding of university education.

The woman mentioned above had a rather harrowing experience recently when she gave a speech on a university campus about unfortunate developments in K-12 education. An LGBTQ+ advocacy group organized a protest against her and another speaker. It wasn't as bad as the recent protests in San Francisco and at Stanford, but still, there were amplified speeches outside the venue before the event even started. One of her professional colleagues spoke against her alleged positions (in the vaguest possible terms, though she mentioned "equity" several times), there was a lot of ridiculous chanting about "hate" and "fear" and a vile exhortation by a protest organizer to vote her out of office.

When it was time for the event, campus police allowed the protesters (now including people from MEChA, a group with a history of violence and intimidation at protests) to chant inside the room through megaphones for 8 minutes. "Fascists go home". They vowed to end the ability of people to express ideas they didn't like, "fascist" ideas, on campus. None of the "fascism" was ever described to a reporter. It was just name-calling. Then those who wouldn't be quiet were escorted out and the event was allowed to proceed. So at least there's that.

Anyway, in honor of my brave friend's experience, I thought it might be appropriate to share some links that those of us who may still feel some fondness for Western Civilization might find appropriate to pass on to certain individuals we know. Probably not to the most "woke", but to people who still have some reasoning capacity. It's the weekend.

*

John Hayward again:

A generation after the supposed triumph of classical liberalism at the "end of history," free speech exists nowhere on Earth as a matter of principle. Every single tech mogul's commitment to free speech evaporates when powerful authoritarians demand censorship.

Authoritarian foreign regimes know they only need to threaten blockage of Western social media services to make their management comply with censorship demands. Some push back harder than others, but in the end, they all cave. They can't afford to lose access to growing markets. . .

Domestically, we've seen government officials using economic leverage and ideological affinity to limit speech in collusion with their Little Partners in the private sector. . .

Equity vs. Merit

Heather MacDonald has written a new book on the poisonous influence of the concept of "equity" in our society today. The following interview, almost an hour long, is excellent. She offers many, many examples to back up the destructive power of replacing merit with equity.

No one is better than Heather MacDonald at expressing gratitude for the gifts of Western Civilization. And dismay that, say, younger university students are being deprived of these gifts.

At the end of the Q&A she offers a call to action. How to take action is left to others.

This 13 minute podcast by James Lindsay, When to Stand Up, is quite interesting, I think. I hesitate to direct people toward his Twitter feed. He's one of those people who could use a Twitter editor. Seriously. But his New Discourses site is valuable.

The podcast reminds us that the fight against Marxism is not going to get easier. There is an interesting review of how long it took the Maoists to take control in China. Plus a reminder not to over-react to the provocations of the Left, thus playing into their hands. Standing up doesn't have to be something dramatic. It can be as simple as becoming educated.

How to stand up is important. This is also true for Republicans on an institutional level, but it is going to take them a long time to figure that out. They are not doing real well at this time dealing with this kind of extortion in Montana and elsewhere. James Lindsay described (on Twitter) one strategy involving studies of why transgender ideology led to so many suicide attempts (among other steps).

Incidentally, Lindsay's friend, the Australian videographer Michael Nayna is doing a breakdown of his movie on the grievance studies hoaxes, if you know anyone who is into that kind of thing. These hoaxes were certainly one way to fight back. Did people pay attention?

In Defense of Merit in Science

Yesterday, a social media friend picked up this piece from the Journal of Controversial Ideas via Bari Weiss at The Free Press.

"Lysenko arises . . ."

This paper's authors-hardly a group of unknowns--say they first tried to publish the paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). But the journal's editors reportedly advised them to remove the word 'merit' from the title of the paper, which is simply titled: In Defense of Merit in Science. According to the journal's editorial board, 'This concept of merit. . . has been widely and legitimately attacked as hollow.' We urge you to read the whole paper here.
Bari Weiss

Abstract

Merit is a central pillar of liberal epistemology, humanism, and democracy. The scientific enterprise, built on merit, has proven effective in generating scientific and technological advances, reducing suffering, narrowing social gaps, and improving the quality of life globally. This perspective documents the ongoing attempts to undermine the core principles of liberal epistemology and to replace merit with nonscientific, politically motivated criteria. We explain the philosophical origins of this conflict, document the intrusion of ideology into our scientific institutions, discuss the perils of abandoning merit, and offer an alternative, human-centered approach to address existing social inequalities.

Imagine "Merit" being a CONTROVERSIAL IDEA!

Today, this piece hit the WSJ and Instapundit:

In some ways this new species of Lysenkoism is more pernicious than the old, because it affects all science--chemistry, physics, life sciences, medicine and math--not merely biology and agriculture. The government isn't the only entity pushing it, either. "Progressive" scientists promote it, too, along with professional societies, funding agencies like the National Institutes of Health and Energy Department, scientific journals and university administrators. When applying for openings as a university scientist today, job candidates may well be evaluated more by their record of supporting "social justice" than by their scientific achievements.

The authors of the Grievance Studies Hoaxes were right: The ideologies underlying these fields of studies are taking down our universities. And, as Glenn Reynolds notes, our other institutions. Professional societies, funding agencies, government, etc.

The "other kind" of extremist education in America

It would be best to read the whole thing, but this gives you a flavor of the piece:

But in reality, Public Education is conversion therapy. "Education" has actually become a form of bawdy exhibitionism. Every wild idea imaginable is paraded in front of students. Children are transformed into voyeurs. Turned into victims. They aren't being educated, they are being assaulted.

These days kids are taught to list every injustice in society, but can scarcely name a single justice on the Supreme Court. They can tell you all about Martin Luther King Jr., but think that Martin Luther was his dear old doddering daddy. I suspect that they believe that Alexander Hamilton wrote musicals. And they wouldn't know Adam Smith from Adam's housecat. So when students know neither the basics of biology nor the rudimentary facts necessary to pass a citizenship test, we can safely call that a bad education. . .

Now, don't get me wrong. I am the product of a poor education, but poor education of another sort. I think pi is something that pairs well with ice cream, and I don't know a hypotenuse from a hippopotamus. Even so, there was precious little that I had to unlearn from my time in the classroom. Not once was I ever encouraged to trade my boot cut Wranglers for a prom dress so I could woo the quarterback.

When our local public school introduced "sex ed" in the 7th grade, my folks pulled me out and enrolled me in a Christian school. "It isn't rocket science anyway," my Grandaddy said. "People have been doing it with successful results for centuries without charts and graphs." Learning on the job seems to have worked fine until now. . .

Trinity Academy was so extreme that it affirmed absolutes in both math and morality. While it may be regrettable that I wasn't encouraged to read LGBTQ (letters without end, amen) poetry, I was expected to commit at least one third of the Psalter to memory.

We had gun racks in our trucks and knives in our pockets, but never a school shooting or stabbing.

We prayed before class, before meals, before tests, during chapel, at games, and after all sorts of failures and successes.

I graduated in a senior class of three from a Christian school tacked on to the tail-end of a country church and then went on to receive three degrees, including a PhD from one of Great Britain's ancient universities. All in all, I am quite thankful to have been the recipient of a poor education.

Thought about home schooling? Or a trustworth religious school?

8 That Education thread is brilliant - he is absolutely right, Public "Education" is now nothing but conversion therapy, indoctrination. That is why it can NOT be saved - it is too corrupt and evil at all levels. It must be destroyed utterly - after that, maybe something can be built out of the ashes.

I feel the same way about our entire system of government today. Some of the States are still on track and deserve to survive - but the Federal Level needs to die, and this country needs to break up. It no longer deserves to exist.

16 In my business, we are frequently bombarded by people who think they're running things, but they really aren't.

They seem to ONLY focus on equity and diversity. It's all they ever talk about, and their pronouncements, when they come, are largely ignored. The do try to meddle in the day to day, but for the most part they are irrelevant.

So I guess we let them pretend they're in charge. I guess. They remain harmless. But I do often wonder what will happen if/when they start making demands. So far no one is insisting I put "my pronouns" in my email signature, but as trivial as that may seem, I intend, if they do, to merely say no.

And not to turn this into the politics of this past week, but it seems to me America's only salvation (if I can use that word) is States' Rights. Places like Florida and Texas HAVE to be able to say no to Washington, and make it stick.

Which is why, if there are people in places like Florida and Texas... and several other states, it would be infinitely better if they just stay where they are, rather than try to go to Washington.

No, it's not. The current claims about "merit" are baseless because it really isn't defined. It always comes down to either "people like me" or, for the more naive, "people who can game the system." Like GKC, I refuse to worship success, for the reasons Solomon gave, among others. It works only in artificially constructed tests, as in sports.

In Tucker's case it may turn out to be the greatest gift the left gave to conservatives. Scuttlebutt is NewsMax wants him, with check book open, and free rein. NewsMax is good right now, but Tucker could make them great. If you have not seen Tucker's recent speech at the Heritage Foundation you really should. It's about a half hour long.

And for those of you who want to see people like Crowder taken out, stop it. You may not like him or how he does what he does, but he's a warrior in this fight too.

Agree with this sentiment. The liberal fascists think popularity and the wielding of bureaucratic power are all that matters. Somewhat true, until the script flips, and it gets sporty.

They are ignorant and the sane portions of their movement won’t match our resolve. The fundamental question being what is the triggering event? Or is there one? Given a Minnesota rep is attempting to not just normalize pedophilia, but grant it special legislative protections.

CT Surgeon John Calhoon, as outgoing president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons was recently pilloried for invoking "merit" as a valid metric for selecting trainees into surgical residencies. His actual words included:
- Affirrmative Action is not equal opportunity
- The best metric is simply whether somebody does good

For these relatively anodyne comments he was labeled a "racist" and also was thrown under the bus by the STS governing board.

At the level of highly skilled professions such as heart surgeon, airline pilot, etc. merit, in the sense of demonstrated competence absolutely should be a determining factor. Opportunity operates on the entry level, but surviving the rigors of study, knowledge, judgment and technical skill ultimately fall on the individual's innate capability. It cannot be gifted regardless of skin color, genital configuration or nepotism.

If you've been given an opportunity but have not attained competence or better yet, excellence, I don't want you operating on my heart valve.

64 It's pretty much impossible to operate in the white collar world without signing a non-compete contract. That said, the definition of competition is very easily lawyered, especially if the contract defines it very broadly. And at least in Minnesota I've been told by my lawyers that getting a noncompete case all the way through court is really hard.

Like, if you're an engineer who designs 31 sprocket widgets for the Derpomatic 5000, they could get you if you went to another company to design 31 sprocket widgets that are compatible wtih the Derpomatic 5000. But they can't do shit if the contract just says the area of competition is something vague like "manufacturing" and you start designing 46 sprocket widgets for the F-19 Flying Moron.

It also depends on what State you're in. In Kali, some of the non-compete language is non-enforceable, but yes, just about every company I worked for (except when I worked for myself) had non-compete clauses, enforceable or not (with the statement that if any clause does not comport with law, the other clauses are still effective).

Not a big deal in my world, but for someone like Tucker, I would think he could easily opt out of whatever he signed, and no matter how much money he would leave on the table, they couldn't in fact, silence him, if he decides to go anywhere else, and indeed, he's probably NOT going back on teevee.

77 Anyone that signs a non compete clause is dumb.
You want me to not compete? Beat the other competitor's offer

Except if you refuse, your offer will not be forth coming in many roles. That said, there are a number of gating features around non- competes to ensure the language is not unduly burdensome. By the way, most competitors will ask if you are under a non-compete and will want to review the language prior to offering a role.

84 When I got ditched during the riots in a pandemic going into a recession, all engineered by my friends in the public sector, it quickly occurred to me that I might want to work for a competitor because it was a fun and exciting industry and I have a lot of strategically valuable domain knowledge. The first step was to go though all the severance stuff, which came with additional terms over and above the initial employment contract in exchange for a pile of money to not cause trouble on the way out. Then, before signing anything, I hired an attorney and reviewed all this stuff with them before making any decisions about the severance and future employment. Once everything checked out I signed the stuff, and took some time over the summer to decide what I wanted to do (tl,dr: it's time to escape the Midwest, son). Then and only then did I start looking for another job.

So Tucker Carlson is probably going through a similar process, starting with lawyers and ending with some soul searching. Unless he's a total idiot he has more than enough cash on hand to afford short term expenses.

That's an easy one--it was driven by the socialism, not the nationalism. National socialists and international socialists aka commies were functionally equivalent because of the underlying collectivist dogma that everyone and everything is expendable for the sake of The Cause.

A nationalist-libertarian government would be like if Switzerland and The Netherlands had a baby. Probably pretty weird kid, but well capable of defending itself, lots of pride in its achievements but not interested in imperialistic aggression, and what government power there is mostly devolved to the lower levels of the system. I'm told that one of the Swiss cantons still practices a form of voting where you present your sword as proof of citizenship because everyone's militia in Switzerland. Sounds awesome.

144 We each have the ability to influence someone younger.

What is happening has happened before.

One example from 1607 years ago:

In the Peloponnesian War, Athenians sent emissaries to negotiate with the rulers of the neutral island of Melos. The emissaries demanded that Melos join the Delian League and pay tribute to Athens or face destruction; "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must".
The Melians rejected the ultimatum.

After a siege and a fight, the Athenians executed the adult men and sold the women and children into slavery.
In the negotiations, the Athenians offered no moral justification for their invasion, but instead bluntly told the Melians that Athens needed Melos for its own ends and that the only thing Melians stood to gain in submitting without a fight was self-preservation.

It is taught as a classic case study in political realism to illustrate that selfish and pragmatic concerns motivate a country at war.

The normals among us are the damping rods in a nuclear reactor. Remove us, and things go boom.

However, the will to power will bring ruthless people to the front, and their first choice of victims will be those inside the power structure that can threaten them. The blood will flow.

Then, the illegals and Islamics will fight the power, as the promises to passivate them are not kept. The money runs out. Again, we can avoid this, not being in power. Just keeping to ourselves is protective.

In 2012 we were mocked for expressing concern that, no, it wasn't just about love, it was about using it to destroy the family and attack Christian churches/institutions.

In 2023 we have teachers and social media actively grooming our kids in secret to be some flavor of LGBTQ, and if you dare attempt to protect them from it they are enacting laws allowing legal removal/taking them out of state for medical treatment.

A other teacher just seemed to view traching class as a joke. (Both were priests). One science class offered (chemistry).

And like all morons, I was above average IQ. What a wasre.

198 people like to hold out on the Spanish Civil War, but the more important thing is to ask both what led to the cultural and political turmoil that led to the coups, counter-coups and rebellions, and what made the Republic's purge the final trigger instead of the most recent abuse?

The first part has to do with the final collapse of the Spanish Empire in the Spanish American War after most of a century of posing by a fairly incompetent and insular ruling class and a great feeling of oppression by the working classes and the farming classes because the economy and technology was not allowed to change since it would affect those who profited from the current world.

If you go to Youtube and look up traditional rope making for both Sweden and Spain, you can get the idea of what Spain was like. Sweden has a giant indoors ropewalk with complicated equipment to make multistrand hawsers for ships out of flax yarn. The Spanish one has three peasants with wooden equipment with the main guy with tow wrapped around his waist like he was in a deBrugge painting from the 15th century - And the Spanish navy used that sort of hawser up until they went to all iron hulled ships

199 Fun fact about the Ottoman Turks, they considered themselves to be a continuation of the Roman Empire and conducted themselves accordingly. One of the causes of religious warfare in the later medieval era was a series of nastygrams sent between sultans and popes, and various Ottoman and HRE warlords, over which one gets to be the One True Rome.

208 I cannot confirm this is a well crafted study or how scientific / representative it is, but the study claims that 70% of female -> male trannies and 80% of male -> female are homosexual.

I do know that this fits what I have seen, and have noticed in discussions with people. Lesbians are complaining that there are no butch lesbians around any more, they all got a "sex change" to be in the body "they should have been born with."

And a very high percentage are autistic, according to the same study, but I'm skeptical of that because of the extremely overbroad way autism has been defined lately.

The second group causes the first group a lot of grief but they're too wrapped up in class politics to ditch the toxic ones. Transgender is gonna be hugely appealing to the second group, and the results speak for themselves.

219 I for one can't wait to see the Republican Party marched to the guillotine. The party of "that's not who we are," has sat back and watched as their supposed good friends across the aisle set fire to all civility, decorum, decency, respect for the law and yet DID NOTHING and still DO NOTHING to stop it.
So G.O.P., you did everything you could to placate the Left. You let them run the education system. You let them run the EPA. You confirmed nearly all their judges and ceeded them the courts. You defied the pleas of your own voters and stood by while they tore down the nation's culture. Then you stood by in dead silence while a huge national election was stolen and told your voters to suck it, there was not a thing you would do to fight it.
Now look where we are.
It will be a night to behold, when you flee the torchlit procession bearing down on you and start banging on my door, begging me to hide you. And I will laugh at you and give you over to that mob, the exact same way you laughed at me when you gave our once beautiful country away to the exact same mob.
I'm stocking up on popcorn for that night. Can't wait!

The Florida residence I believe he still owns is valued at more than $5 million ... I think he'll be financially okay taking his time to carefully map out his future.

Lady YD and me only put Cocomelon on the family YT, and we always skip the ads. So the first time I skipped this ad, I thought it must surely be a mistake. It was a *2 hour* ad for the US Army, featuring a bunch of old soldiers lecturing new recruits about how great the Army is.

People who only watch Cocomelon are two kinds of people: toddlers who can't even understand ads, and their parents. Toddlers can't join the Army, and parents have something more important to die for than this regime.

So, after the third it timed it popped up on Cocomelon, I finally figured it out... these lengthy harangues are being targeted at the older siblings/cousins of these youngsters, who are tired of baby cartoons, and willing to watch anything else. For hours. Their parents aren't watching watch they watch, and skipping over the ads.

They're the ones who will soon be able to do it, but don't have the knowledge and experience to know better than to lay it on the line for some big guy's 10%. Sad. Repulsive, even.

My idiot cat, Orange, climbed up into the engine compartment of my 2013 Toyota Avalon and got his sorry ass *completely* wedged in. No amount of rearranging his legs, twisting, etc. would free him. Ultimately, I had to remove the engine torque mount to make enough space to get him out.

So what's the problem? Every webpage I've found gives torque values for the engine mounts at the base of the engine but not the torque mount on the upper left side. What to do?

I'm so glad none of mine have a wacky American black name like Larmondo or something. I think it's a huge impediment. My own name is sort of a weird Jewish name, because the whole thing is very biblical, and that raises enough eyebrows.

The funniest "Family Feud" I ever saw had "Biblical names the people name their children."

So, one family is Jewish and they come out with "Abraham, Joshua, Issac, Jacob, David"

They lost. The other family won with "James, John, Paul, Peter, etc.

You maybe should read the New Testament just so you know what you are dealing with.

244 The educrats need to just how perpetuating an education system from a no longer existing European region but hurt from a defeat 220 years ago is so untouchable. One way to halt the decline is to defund public schools and mandate school choice. Give parents skin in the game to choose. If public schools are so awesome, they'll continue;if not they'll close. Next, is to expel and permanently disqualify law enforcement and jutisice officials endangering public safety. And finally for now, arrest the drag queens and all organizers of any lewd performances targeting kids.
