Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a friend like this waiting . . .

Speaking of pets, don't count on elephants to always be "Gentle Giants". But this is interesting: Elephants may be domesticating themselves:

Elephants are the gentle giants of the animal kingdom. They will often empathetically reach out their trunks to console a distressed sister or attempt to lift up those that are ill and suffering. They recognize the bones of deceased elephants and appear to mourn their dead. They also recognize themselves in mirrors--a sign they're self-aware. These traits may have evolved because elephants have domesticated themselves, according to a study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. If so, that would make them the only known animal besides humans and bonobos to have done so. But not everyone sees it as an open-and-shut case.

Proving that any animal, let alone elephants, has self-domesticated is a challenge . .

An elephant at the zoo hit threw a piece of asphalt at my little sister, at some distance, as we were walking along the sidewalk. Hit her in the head. She was just a little girl. Caused a flesh wound. The elephant looked sort of bored. It was a big animal.

Meet The PetMorons

maddie pwd.jpg

This is Maddie, our latest Portuguese Water Dog, at 4-1/2 months of age. "What made you think this was going to be a short walk?" was the message she was conveying to me. Maddie has the greatest variety in her coloring out of the three PWDs we have had. Her sire was brown, and Mrs. Krebs thinks that will become more evident when she receives her first haircut in the very near future. She began obedience school training this past week.

Krebs v Carnot

Maddie looks like she will be a delightful dog! Are you suggesting that she might be a bit assertive already?

From Mr. Scott:

We have Yellow Dog Two (Maggy) and Black Dog Three (Molly) ensuring we do not get invaded by squirrels from the back yard. They take their duties seriously.

Maggy and Molly do look like they have a serious job to do! A great pair of dogs.

On the farm, first turkey hatchling in the incubator. Frankly, it might look a little better in a few hours. What do you think?

Still, looks better than these.

8 Maddie reminds me of my first dog, Kappa, when I was a kid. She wasn't anything fancy. Mom said she was a Heinz 57. Went for years thinking that was an actual breed.

Oldest brother brought her from his frat house to save her from the abuse she was experiencing from some of his drunk frat bro's.

11 Ciampino's Rescue kitties - pictures at

Scarlet's kittens: Sadness pervades my home. We are down to 1 kitten.
We suspect that inbreeding may be the reason that they are unhealthy. A kitten group we found online said the same thing, inbreeding often results in serious internal deformations and other problems.
The last one, a gray, ate okay and is active. We cannot seem to have it gain weight and the blood loss via the stools is concerning as it's so tiny that a little blood really means a lot.
The other pregnant lady Biscuits has not given birth yet. I really hope her kittens are healthy.

On a lighter note there's also another photo update at link below including a funny video of Salem - he discovered the camera!

16 Yay Moron Pets!

Last Sunday, daughter and hub brought their two dogs out to the ranch; Chowie some kind of Spaniel I think long-haired, pretty much the same size as our Malinois Daisy; and Maya, half the size, but a mass of muscle. The three dogs had a great time racing around the yard together. And stayed in the yard!!

At one point, I saw all three racing down the road toward the gate — evoking dread after that unfortunate incident months ago with our son's dog and Daisy and the neighbor's chickens. I saw them racing past the shed, and then, joy o joy, they rounded the shed at top speed and raced back to us. Good doggies!

Ony the old black cat is getting better at handling Daisy's unwelcome attentions. Drives Daisy crazy, but Ony doesn't (usually) flee from her anymore. Ony just sits on her chair, dog's nose right in her face, and at worst hisses. She has extended a paw now and then, but I think she's just warning him - no claws in Daisy's snout so far. And yesterday, Ony was watching, tail twitching, while she stalked something behind a bookshelf. Daisy just laid down nearby, as if to say, not time to play while Ony is working.

25 Cat Riddle from Perfessor Squirrel's other bathroom cat:

Why was the cat sitting on the computer?

26 Handsome pet morons today, and loved the memes!

So sorry to hear of this, Ciampino. One of our kittens born back in 2008, Squeak, had recurrent convulsions and had to be put down.

It's very difficult to be faced with one's limitations at times like this, and accept that nature will take its course.

33 I used to think that Twitter was trash, but I set up my first account and found that the trashiness depends entirely on who you follow, and what you respond to. Anyway, I am astonished at how many great animal videos there are on Twitter! Of course, Ace selects some for the weekday cafes, but there are so many more there!

So I was disabused of a misconception, and I recommend Twitter if you like animals, as long as you don't use it to follow news, politics or culture. Mine is tuned mainly for STEM stuff, and animals. Use it selectively, and it's great.

38 I think it was at the Gulfarium in Ft. Walton that they tested dolphins by putting a mirror in the water. The dolphins looked at it with some interest. After a few days when the dolphins were mostly ignoring the mirror, the dolphin researchers made different dolphin hats, colorful bathing caps really. Showed them to the dolphins, and them strapped them onto the dolphin's heads. After each hat change, the dolphins would go straight to the mirror to admire themselves.

Some great pets today! Love the peeps, LOL!
If not posted already, cats prefer to drink water that is moving, not sitting in a bowl. They'll eventually drink water from any source, it's true, but they'll drink more from a fountain type dispenser. As a result, your cats will have fewer kidney issues, fewer UTI problems (which cats are prone to suffer).
Love the tuxedo cat up top!

They like and trust moving water much more than still. Hence the use of bubbling fountains to encourage drinking these days.

Only danger of deep glasses is that a cat o mine that loved drinking from cups I had used learned to use a claw to upset the glass when reaching the bottom was too much of a chore.

From The Conversation, March 1, 2022, Future evolution: from looks to brains and personality, how will humans change in the next 10,000 years? In part,

"We will likely live longer and become taller, as well as more lightly built. We’ll probably be less aggressive and more agreeable, but have smaller brains. A bit like a golden retriever, we’ll be friendly and jolly, but maybe not that interesting. At least, that’s one possible future. But to understand why I think that’s likely, we need to look at biology."

Fun article but I do beg to differ because animals are always interesting.

My gangs of cats have always had a designated protector, who sits outside the group and watches them looking around letting the others relax. I used to have trouble getting photos of one of them, since he always faced away from the group while on duty. Usually its the older male, and this duty passed to a young shy boy now who didn't seem suited for it.

74 No, she doesn't like the fountain. I bought one for her, because she was drinking out of the faucet, when I had it running during freezing weather. She used the fountain for awhile, then would have nothing to do with it. I try to make sure that I don't leave anything down for her that isn't full.

I have a covered cup in the bedroom. She comes in and demands I take the lid off that, so she can drink that water. She's just weird.

So weird.

Well we get 5 or more cats as company. Look, you may fall in and then who will rescue you? You wield the can opener and that's priority one.

81 Ciampino,
Thank you for helping the kitties. I'm sorry it's been so difficult. But, take comfort in knowing you've given love to God's creatures.
And give you're daughters a hug. They are such kind souls.

82 Love the PWD photo. We had two, our daughter had one. Our male lived 14 years, still strong and beautiful. The most dangerous thing you could do is put on a Santa hat around him. He'd work for an hour to get it off you.Never stopped until he won. A friend painted a winter scene with him (Blitzen-no wonder he was obsessed) in the snow, a Santa hat in his mouth.

84 I have what I think — and of course I would — an extra special Pet Thread submission.

But how? Where?

Is it aceofspadeshqATgmailDOTcom?

Thanks.
