Ace of Spades Pet Thread, March 25

Mother Love

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Once when I was growing up, my family stayed in a log cabin-type motel in West Yellowstone. (Incidentally, log cabin construction is earthquake-resistant, which was a good thing in West Yellowstone).

Anyway, we kids decided to walk into town, and two big dogs from the motel decided to accompany us. We did not invite them. They decided on their own.

Everyone we encountered seemed to think they were wolves, and most of them slowly moved away from us. But I guess they weren't wolves. They were dogs. Still, they gave us sort of an unearned feeling of power.

Meet The PetMorons

archiesc1.jpg

Hello,

I'm a long time lurker, a VERY long time. I've posted in the comments sparingly but I should contribute more. I post under the nic Hank Scorpio.

This is Archie. We rescued him the day before he was scheduled to be put down. He was a little older than what people want in a dog and he has a cyst on top of his head, there was just something about him that compelled us to snatch him up in 2018. He is very friendly dog and pretty smart. But don't let the cuddly appearance and friendly nature fool you, Archie is a jerk. He's demanding and stubborn, he loves to wake up my wife at 3AM to be let out. And the barking, my God the barking.

He's family now, follows my wife everywhere and I get the sense that if anyone tried to harm her or our kids, he would do something about it.

Well, Archie looks like he could be very protective!

* * *

coalbombay.jpg

Coal, our Bombay, AKA the Poco Pantera, likes to climb into the Neater Feeder while I fill the water dish. He's such a funny boy!

Cheers leber (the backwards rebel).

He looks very dignified for a cat in a dish. And I see a friend coming around the corner . . .

* * *

kai n pillr.jpg

from Shelgel

This Kai he has a very rough life. Keep him in your prayers. ? He was adopted from as pup from a pet rescue from the reservation. I have heard him bark maybe 3 times in over the year+ we have had him.

He does look like he has a tough life!

lost sunny.jpg

We lost Sunny!

Not really. We put new flooring in the bedrooms. Great camouflage!

Marty

Sunny's eyes really stand out in that environment!

* * *

bonnienclidde.jpg

Here are our smooth fox terrier brother and sister, Bonnie and Clyde. They love people and hate squirrels.

mc

Wow! What a great photo! Makes me want to be their friend.

1 Yay! Pet thread.

Posted by: olddog in mo at March 25, 2023 03:13 PM (ju2Fy)

2 I have a question--do dogs and cats control their tails? Can they decide, "I'm going to wag my tail over this" or is it more a response triggered by emotion that they have little control over? Like when humans blush. People can't decide "I'm going to blush now."

Thanks!

6 The pets! Yay! Everyone is so cute, even Archie the jerk. We have the windows open and it’s a little warm, but it is making the kitty boys so happy, I am just going to deal.

7 Great looking group of moronimals. And the quality of the pix is very good.

8 Coal, in the Neater Feeder, looks like our Betty.

Posted by: olddog in mo at March 25, 2023 03:20 PM (ju2Fy)

9 Coal isn't actually in a dish. While I'm filling the dish, he hops into the opening and waits for fresh water. That's Maxipuss coming around the corner. He chases his tail around the bathtub. Sort of a Daytona like thing. Cats is funny critters!

Posted by: leber at March 25, 2023 03:23 PM (E7KPo)

10 "I have a question--do dogs and cats control their tails?"

They definitely can control their tails. But there's probably a fair bit of involuntary expression as well. Like when humans talk with their hands.

Posted by: FeatherBlade at March 25, 2023 03:23 PM (iRBMC)

11 We got a water fountain for our cats and they love it!

But nothing compares to the "wild water" they find outdoors.

Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at March 25, 2023 03:23 PM (Mzdiz)

12 Bella, our other cat, just found out we have a small deck off the master bedroom. She's blown away. Been out there for over an hour.

Posted by: olddog in mo at March 25, 2023 03:24 PM (ju2Fy)

13 Yeah, you wouldn't think they'd be so picky about the water inside when they'll drink from every filthy puddle outdoors.

Posted by: FeatherBlade at March 25, 2023 03:24 PM (iRBMC)

14 Some good looking pets.

Posted by: Javems at March 25, 2023 03:25 PM (AmoqO)

15 I think the last 3" of a cat's tail cannot be controlled. It twitches even when they're frozen like statues, preparing to pounce.

Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at March 25, 2023 03:25 PM (Mzdiz)

16 I tried to watch Call of the Wild with Harrison Ford . I'm getting soft in my old age because it was hard to watch.

17 I need a neater feeder, but a single bowl one. My cats are the messiest eaters in the world, but they have a water fountain for water, I just need the food part.

Posted by: Piper at March 25, 2023 03:25 PM (ZdaMQ)

18 I have five water bowls around the house for my kittehs. The main bowl is required to be cleaned and refilled daily by order of the kittehs. I do it first thing when I get up in the morning . They both wait patiently in its spot until I return.

Posted by: polynikes at March 25, 2023 03:28 PM (IhbYA)

19 Years ago, during the winter I caught a glimpse of a wolf. At least I think that's what it was. Like the photo up top it was much, much larger than a dog. Standing behind my Chevy Silverado pickup it was almost the height of the tailgate lip.

My cat Hexie is very odd. She's quite dainty when she eats her wet food, leaving little mess. But she scatters her dry food all over the floor whenever she eats it.

Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at March 25, 2023 03:32 PM (BpYfr)

22 Our cats are messy eaters, too. Got a rubber "placemat" under their bowls that's easy to clean. For water we use a 1 gal. gravity waterer. They love to watch the bubbles after we fill it and put it back on the floor.

Posted by: olddog in mo at March 25, 2023 03:32 PM (ju2Fy)

23 21 my boys are just pigs. They won’t eat crunchy food, they get canned and freeze dried raw. I am constantly cleaning up after them. They won’t eat next to each other, either, so we have 2 food stations in the kitchen. The water fountain is on the counter by the sink because they also want fresh water daily and it needs to be plugged in. At least it looks like a piece of water art for those who don’t know the difference.

Posted by: Piper at March 25, 2023 03:37 PM (ZdaMQ)

24 Lucy drinks out of a water glass on my bedside table. I am not allowed a water glass. Only Lucy is allowed a water glass.

And when I use the bathroom, she jumps on the sink and waits for me to turn on the water just enough so she can drink from it.

I don't know about dogs, but with cats, their tail is an essential communication tool. It's part of the body language they use to communicate with other cats and with humans (if you know how to read it).

Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at March 25, 2023 03:40 PM (BpYfr)

28 I got a water fountain and Fanny used it a bit. But she prefers to drink out of pint Mason jars like I do. So I jusr keep ome of those filled up by her food. She drinks out of the dog water bowl too.

I have been buying grooming tools at Tractor Supply. And that means Jake has dog treats, Greenies, and a toy duck with a squeakie. One of these times, I need to use their dog washing station and give him a bath.

30 ...love people, hate squirrels...
Our 3 rescue Jack Russel mixes are the same. They came to us separately over several years but their introduction to squirrels followed the same basic timeline. Week 1, frantically chase every squirrel in sight with zero successes. Week 3, half heartedly chase only the ones that get too close. Week 6, while snoozing on the deck, open one eye to see a squirrel 3 ft away. Close eye & go back to sleep.

33 I usually post on the Garden Thread, but.. this week I baby-sat my neighbors' 2 guinea pigs, Pancake and Waffle. I fed them timothy hay, Adult Guinea Pig Pellets, and a bag of veggies each day. On the last day of my baby-sitting, each of them was willing to take a treat from my hand, which they hadn't been willing to do before. I feel honored by their trust. (I guess being the most important person in the world, the Veggie Deliverer, for a week, made me trustworthy.)

35 Well, today we learned something weird about our dog: she LOVES cornbread. We had two chunks of stale cornbread that we put out for the birds on the side of a small planter. Later in the morning I saw one was missing and figured maybe the squirrels got it.

But then I was sitting out under the trees next to the planter and saw Luna snatch the second chunk of cornbread and devour it. I have no doubt she got the first one too.

This is a dog who doesn't mess with the trash can or try to snatch food off of tables or counters...but I think she'd try if cornbread were involved. So strange.

My monsters aren't as bad as that about water glasses, Nurse, but Stirling follows me into the bathroom and actually squeaks at me until I turn on the faucet in the sink for him to drink. I see him lapping drops from the bathtub faucet as well. Yet they have a water fountain, and I know they use it. There just must be something "wild" and appealing about streams or drops they "find."

39 Oh, and tomorrow is the first birthday of Dagny Sophia, Princess of Siberian Cats. (I tell her, "Sure, I'll treat you like a princess. I'll marry you off to a total stranger in a foreign country where they don't even speak our language, just to cement an alliance.")

She does not seem that much larger than when she arrived here last September, but she has filled out some and developed more of the "little barrel" body that Siberians are known for. Still she looks a bit like a cartoon kitten with her short frame and bushy tail. Not a demonstrative kitten, she's usually to be found around humans -- though that could be because Stirling is around us, and she wants to be near him so they can play.

I didn't know Newfs came in bronze. I thought you got black, and black-and-white, the Landseer pattern; and that was it.

Miss Linda keeps saying "Stirling had a hardscrabble life in Vicksburg." Maybe a bit, but he was taken in by the shelter with his littermates and mother when he was very tiny, and clearly was well-treated and properly fed in the 3 months or so before I adopted him. He wasn't living in an alley or mistreated by a cruel owner.

I just love hearing about your kitties.

In my dream world, I have a catio for Lucy with grass and rocks and wood for her to climb and scratch. I think it's important for her to go outside, but with the coyotes and raptors and being on a busy street right next to the beach, well, I'm not willing to take the chance of her getting injured or killed.

Maybe someday I'll live in a place with a yard where I can build something for her. Or not. I do love the beach.

Is it random scatter or 'bulldozer' pushing away from them. Some of mine do the latter, pushing other kernels back and out of the bowl. Random scatter can come from an instinctive shake of prey to break its neck after a bite to the neck.

I had a cat that had a defect or injury to the base of his tail so he could never raise his tail in the "flagpole" friendly position and he always had problems with cat to cat interactions, not hugely hostile but rubbing them the wrong way. When he was 17+ I got a pair of kittens and they didn't seem to realize he was abrasive and he was very happy hanging out watching them play with each other and with toys and being the grandpa until he passed away a few months later.
