Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Note the dog in the photo above. Below, Hrothgar is getting philosophical with us:

Stumbled across this yesterday and have seen it before, but as always it grabs me (in a good way

So I went looking on the good part of the internet and found this:

What if, in the dog world, humans are elves that routinely live to be 500+ years old?

They live so long . . . but the good ones still bond with us for our entire lives.

These immortals are so kind we must be good friends to them.

Many dogs never get to see their owners grow old and weak:

Now I am old. The fur around my muzzle is grey and my joints ache when we walk together. Yet she remains unchanged, her hair still glossy, her skin still fresh, her step still sprightly. Time doesn't touch her and yet I love her still.

But some do: . . .

Then I scrolled down to the video at post #4 at woodbarter and

Yowza!

A lot of great content to think about in these links, Hrothgar. Thanks.

Somebody needs to do one of those videos about Chihuahuas.

Meet The PetMorons

PanfriedPrecious.jpg

LOOOVE the Pet Thread, KT! My young daughter does too; each and every Saturday, I scan for things to text her the link to, or watch with her when she's here with me for the weekend.

This is a pic of Precious, now almost four years old, back when she was a lot smaller than she is now. She used to love curling up for a nap in my small Revereware saucepan. She's too big for that sort of thing now, but if I have the pan out on the stovetop I do still catch her eyeballing it now and then. She's a funny little thing for sure. Use it if you like, or don't, my feelings won't be hurt either way. Thanks for all you do over at the ol' HQ...cheers!

Mike

Precious in a Pan is disconcerting at first. But kittens LOVE to curl up in containers of all sorts, don't they?

Light mailbox this week, so I guess we get to visit a new little farm in the family.

Here's baby pig Jolene:

I hope I have the right source for the chicken photos.

10 That is a great assortment of critters!

I had to watch the Deny the Wolf trailer without sound, but it looks interesting. My bulldog never moves faster than when he sees a bird he can catch in the yard. He isn't as deadly as the cat, but he has caught and killed several birds.

30 Hissing booth. LOL. That cat looks like dear departed cat Cleo who didn't hiss or scratch. I think somebody dumped her and she came inside the parsonage after a huge snowstorm at thet first church which I served. She was a sweetie and very friendly. Sometimes if the church door was open she would come down the aisle during church services , or if the door was open down to the Meeting room area she would come to church meetings. I considered putting her on the church membership roll. 😉

36 My Shiba is a different animal when he goes after and kills a squirrel or raccoon. I'm not looking for him to do it but when he's off-leash in the woods, there's no stopping him. If I tried to train or force that out him, it would be like McMurphy after the lobotomy. I'm not doing that to him. He'll eventually drop it when I tell him to and keep staring at it, but as long as I don't take it we're good and can leave and then he's back to doing his domesticated act.

54 Some time ago I mentioned here that we are feeding daily a litter of 5 cats. We discovered it soon after they were born and thus our commitment to their individual welfare. Originally it was one mother and 6 kittens, 3 black and 3 gray. A black one disappeared very early on, as did the mother, so we are down to 5. Recently, on arriving for the daily feeding, we met a lady who runs a catch-neuter-release local rescue. A couple of days ago she announced on FB that she wants to do the NRL and then find homes for them. However from previous conversations, a home often is a barn or even farm, where visits by coyotes are common. Now we haven’t been feeding them all this time as a preprandial fattening up for the convenience of coyotes or owls, so we’ve decided to bring them home as outside cats (I used to have 6 outside/inside cats for about 10 years and I have too many currently inside). The daily interaction with my daughter means they have lost their feral nature and greet her joyously on her arrival, allow her to pet them, and some even allow a pick-up.

58 Afternoon, all! I'll go back and have a look at that "denying the Wolf" video in a bit. But the idea that dogs might look upon us as near-immortal beings -- wow.

Cats see us as staff, yes, but I think they come to love us in their own peculiar way -- much as a man can love a long-serving family retainer, his nurse, who has raised him from a child. I can't imagine a cat looking at his human as a fabulous, near-immortal creature.

59 [PART TWO]

Someone here on AoS suggested I start up a ‘funding account’ to aid with vet fees and sundry. Is this something that is doable on AoS Pet Thread without breaking any rules? I definitely could do with help as I am on a very small annuity.

Here is a video of the kitties feeding.

60 Philosophy aside: Stirling the great black kitten is technically no longer a kitten today! We have settled on March 11 as his birthday, as he was said to be 3 months old when I adopted him on 6/11. If age 1 for a cat = age 13 for a human, then Stirling is now an adult and we should plan his bar mitzvah.

Siberian kitten Dagny is only 15 days behind him for her first birthday, too.

62 Precious in the saucepan reminds me a bit of Annabelle, the white shorthair cat Miss Linda rescued after Katrina. Annabelle hated other cats, but liked humans. One day I was at their place and set my Australian fedora on a bookcase, crown down as you should with a fedora to avoid deforming the brim. I turned away for a moment, only to find that Annabelle -- not a kitten at the time, but not a huge cat -- had curled up inside the hat! Amazing how they can conform themselves to a small space.

The fedora is dark grey. It took me a little time to brush all the short white hairs off of it.

The late Chekov was a bit of a masochist too. He'd hop on the cushion on my lap and sit quietly to be petted. Then, without warning, he'd give me a nip on the hand or arm. Never hard, no breaking of the skin, but it would scare me. I'd snap at him, "Damn cat! Get off me!" and slap his flank. He'd gallop away . . . and then within 5 minutes he'd be back looking to climb on my lap again.

Big beast nipped me at least once a month for 12 solid years, and a few extra -- ca. 150 times during his life.

I miss him anyway.

We did that with my boyhood cat Rusty as he cruised by us waiting for his dinner. His tail was thick-boned at the base, so we'd grip him there and lift him just a bit. Never bothered him.

He had his own routine. If he thought we were taking too long to give him dinner, he'd give us the lightest possible nip on the lower leg if we weren't wearing pants or jeans. Almost like scraping his teeth along the skin -- a gentle reminder.

81 Based on my experience as a Seabee, I advise you to fill a 12 oz coffee cup half full of honey, heat hot in the microwave, bring it to near the top of the cup with bourbon, squeeze half if a lemon in it stir gently, drink all while hot. Since this is a weekend you can dleep in.

82 Feel like I got hit by a truck. Been in and out of bed all day. No cough to speak of. Very slight runny nose. But seriously, I feel like I got run over.

Cheerio!

85 Caring for "discarded" pets can be expensive. We spayed/neutered 4 cats about 5 years ago after they took up residence here. The momma cat had her 3 kittens and we figured after a few weeks or months she, and her kids would be gone. Nah, they're still here. 3 are more or less domesticated, one not so much. But we do what we can. Thankfully they're not picky with what brand food we give them, so it's usually the cheap-O 25lb bag of meow-mix or 9Lives. Plus they'll get inside privileges when it's really cold outside.

St. Francis would approve.

88 I watched the video with the lab and it got dusty in here. My first house was in a little rural town on four acres, two of which was my part of the pond in back. I raised yellow labs. The male, Corwin, was a big goofy beautiful almost white colored from champion stock so had that big square head. My female, Amber's Butterscotch girl, was dark gold and had Hunter instincts. If you threw a stick in the woods, she would run circles til she found it. One time she brought home a turtle and proceeded to gnaw on it like a bone til I got it away from her. Chipmunks were also her specialty.
Great memories.

91 Well. Ol Joe is getting a bit long in the tooth. He's about 13 now. Kinda wheezes when he sits next to me and can't quite jump as high as he used to. Still likes his belly rubs. And he sleeps a lot. Just not sure now much longer I'll have him.
A good companion.

Everyday JT says "Hi"
Makes the days really fly
It's good he doesn't say, "Bye"
Cause that would really make me cry.

Sorry; It's not a patch on Muldoon, but he is much smarter and wittier than I am and has been doing this for decades.

96 "Shiba Inus are a very old breed and still a bit wild.

There's always a bit of distance there between dog and master that you wouldn't see in something like a terrier.
Posted by: naturalfake"

My Yoshi is not a lapdog, some Shibas are, usually females. He guards just out of sight when not outside hunting. It's annoying that the dog shows catgorize the breed as non-sporting. They are hunters. I keep an e-collar on him when he's off-leash as insurance and for his safety. Only need to vibrate it to get him to stop or come back, shock is for emergencies and it's always set low, no pain but you can feel it. I wouldn't do anything to him that I couldn't take. He is 6 and has gotten way better with age. Up until 2, he was a PITA. New Shiba owners need to know this and commit because once these dogs bond at like a few months old, they don't do very well with anyone else for the rest of their lives. See the Richard Gere movie, Hachi, based on the Japanese Akita story. That dog died after 9 years of waiting at a train station for his dead master to return. That's what they do.

99 He had his own routine. If he thought we were taking too long to give him dinner, he'd give us the lightest possible nip on the lower leg if we weren't wearing pants or jeans. Almost like scraping his teeth along the skin -- a gentle reminder.

I had a snapper cat that did something similar - if he was irritated too much he'd snap at you but bring the teeth together just short of your arm, then ram the arm with the teeth. Just so you knew what might have been.
