From Jewells:

New pups at Shep's Place

We have Rosie, a 6lb chihuahua mix who is 14 years old. She's a very mellow girl and the other sweet girl is Brandi who is 9 years old. Didn't get much background on them. I haven't met them yet since I haven't felt up to doing a shift yet but hopefully soon.

Great to hear from you on the Pet Thread again, Jewells! Bet they have been missing you at Shep's Place. The pups are adorable.

Finally entering an early retirement at 29 years of age, I headed back to Montana. On the way home Giggles and I picked up a 13 YO granddaughter and then arrived home to find my Not-my-kid had gotten his Mom a birthday gift in the form of a little 100% American mutt rat dog named Lucy. I had already found a little yellow lab that my Granddaughter has named Luna. The pups are doing fine and seem to be easier to house train than the teen. Here are pics of Luna (lab) Lucy (ratdog) and one of them zzzzzzzzing out after a joint case of the zoomies.

And I thot retirement was gonna be easy

McGyver, out

Congratulations on your "retirement". Post-zoomies naps are easier to photograph than zoomies.

This is Lucy the Fink. She loves being the center of attention, until she doesn't. She is a lovely roommate and reminds me daily that God loves me.

Yes, the owl ornaments are attacked daily and plunked in her water dish.

Lucy looks entirely innocent.

9 As always, a great group of Moron Pets!

In my own household, I'm still struggling with the realization that I now have *5* cats to wrangle.

Hexie (my newest) is doing well. According to the vet, she's only about 2 years old.

Took my oldest cats (Penny and Jasmine) to the vet this past week. She gave them a clean bill of health and was pleased about how healthy they were for their age. Both of them turned 10 in 2022.

So nice to finally "meet" Lucy the Fink! She is an attractive kitty.

17 Yay Pet Thread! Pet aging over the past year? Well, we think Daisy was born about a year ago, so, yeah, some serious changes. Bigger, stronger, faster, and possibly just a tiny bit smarter.

Just got back from taking Daisy the Destroyer for a nice walk. A little cool out, but more autumnal than wintery. Her area of the yard looks like we've been running a wood chipper, but it's just her stick-chewing-up.

On the "cats and dogs living together" front, Ony the old cat is getting bolder every week on mostly-ignoring Daisy, but sometimes big ol' Daisy can tease little Ony into chasing her a ways. Always funny to watch.

That's the local pet report. Now to go read the post & the other pet-lovin' comments.

33 We're packing up the house and the kids know something's going on, so they're kinda stressed out. Extra treats and fuzzy blankets by the fireplace seem to help. Hercules and Xena won't have any troubles adapting to the new place because it's where they started out but the Nugget dog is gonna have to adjust. I suspect that when she sees the other two doing OK, she'll be OK too. Not to mention the back yard is bigger and there will be more squirrels.

36 Great Pictures. Beautiful pets, Adorable puppy picture and Lucy looks very much like one striped cat I had who was named "Tess". She was a feral cat and given to me by a friend. She got used to living inside after being outside and we missed her so much when I guess she figured it was time to die and went out to do that somewhere and never came back. She was about 13 we think.

And yes, our black cat Pynchon (originally from the shelter) who is about 8 seems to be slowing down although that doesn't seem to be that old for a cat. Everytime time spouse sits down he is in spouse's lap and goes to sleep.

That may not be just from getting old. Some cats won't show certain mode of affections due to high strung nerves or because they feel that mode is reserved for other cats. Many times when a cat passes away another cat that never tried before will suddenly take the "sit on top in bed" role (usually the girls) or they will find a new habit to show affection. One of mine that usually hangs on the edge of things recently started playing with shoestrings as I get ready to go to work and now is jumping on my lap in the last few minutes before leaving for a hug and pet. Other times of day, he won't, its his time now.

72 The XO got the cats one of those moving water water bowls. The Persian stuck his flat little face in and started drinking immediately. The Wicked Witch was a lot more hesitant. It took her a while before she would try and a bit longer than that to actually take a full drink.

I've noticed over the past few years that Persians seem to be a lot more adventurous than shorthairs. Both my Persians can hardly wait for a new adventure while the short hairs are much more cautious. I wonder if it's because Persians are that godawful stupid or if they got a few extra curiosity genes to make up for losing half their brains to make those flat faces.

80 We have had 40-60 strays come into our lives over many years but never any Persians or Siamese. mostly tabbies, chocolates, tortoiseshell, tuxies and black ones.

Well many of those mammals probably housed several arthropods in their fur but the Arthropods are shy so we didn't see them.

Don't conflate breed with coloring/marking. Cats hate it when you do that.

Sorry, not an expert in that field, that's left to my daughters. However I have seen enough Siamese to recognize them. Probably also Persians.
Never liked taxonomy side of Biology as I was much more interested in Biochemistry and Physiology.

86 We built 2 feral cat "huts" here when we were "adopted." They're basically a 2' X 2' box split into two levels with a shingled, tilted roof. The bottom is closed off except for two mousehole shaped openings on the left and right sides. There's another mousehole shaped cutout to allow the cat to get into the top part... a loft if you will. It's insulated with foamcore. So's the floor of the loft. The roof is framed and removable so you can clean the "loft out." We've used old towels in it. Straw seems to be pretty good too, but you have to watch mold with it. Plus it attracts other critters.

This design was described as "what feral cats want." I can safely say they have held up, but are ugly unless painted. Our 4 feral cats used them until 3 became "inside/outside" cats... meaning they're outside unless it's below 20F. The 4th cat is a freeloading fuck who shows up 3-4 times a week for a handout.

Going on 5 years with them now.... still used.

and what a wonderful bunch of Moronimals!

always a special spot in my heart for rat terriers; one of our boys had the "paintbrush tail" like Lucy's.

93 The local lady who feeds and sterilizes the local strays uses those wooden orange crates with the center divider, and the cutout face plates. She calls them Cat Condos. She puts straw in them for some insulation.

94 In 2004, a smart, handsome, chatty catty I named Toonses wandered into my life. He was as human-friendly as a cat could be. He eventually moved in and lived with me until he died of cancer in 2011. From 2006-2011, there were 3 other cats in my life. Buddy was a big-headed, American short-haired tabby, feral and retarded, but friendly. He eventually trusted me enough to eat out of my hand. Shadow was a black, short-haired, mean cuss whom nobody liked and Buddy once knocked off my neighbor's deck (Shadow survived the 10' fall to the dirt with a bruised ego). Then there was Dorkie Dork, originally feral and extremely wary, who became the sweetest love bunnie a cat could be. She was murdered in 2019. For over a year, there were no cats in my life. Then my ex adopted Maceo ("MAY see oh") an orange rescue who likes me a lot, I adopted Prettygirl, whom i love despite her excessive feistiness at times. There is Creamsickle (orange and white), the largest feral cat I've ever seen who comes around once in awhile for treats and company. 4th is Little Dude, cat of a neighbor who moved away but returns occasionally and LD remembers me when he roams. 4 cats is :->

96 Cat #4 is actually pretty cool. He suffered from a fractured leg early on... wouldn't let us near him. Thus he earned his name "Gimpy." Now... he's doing fine. He'll let me pet him, pull on his tail, generally smack him around and he's chilled.

But generally worthless. Catches mice at the neighbor's barn.

Typical welfare cat.

97 Some of you might have run into this little problem if you have cats. We had a little one who didn't always use the box to water the flowers. As a result, there was a lot of carpet cleaning done, and now I'm pulling up the rugs over a hardwood floor. As you can guess, some of the felt and mastic is sticking to the hardwood floor. So, how do you deal with that little problem.

Easy. Get yourself a wallpaper steamer. Steam the stuck felt and glue (and tar) for about a minute....scrape it with a putty knife...then treat the hardwood (and clean) with lemon oil. You won't be disappointed. It looks brand new with a shine....and the hardwood I'm dealing with is 48 years old. Give it a try if you need to. It actually works.

We have a sign in our yard that says
"ALL CATS WELCOME. FREE FOOD"
(It's obviously painted in invisible paint except for cats who can penetrate the cloaking).
I think both mummy cats and people drop off unwanted kittens here. Then we also get the full grown cat that stays for the free food. Only two pregnant females so far and both in the last two years (2020-21). Not free for me with neutering and food plus the occasional dash to the vet.

102 We built shelters like that for our 3 "feral" cats. They preferred to come in and hang out on the couch for a couple of hours a night during the pre-Christmas cold snap. Technically they're not feral cats but TNR/community cats. And they're very sociable. We also have 2 garage cats (abandoned/owner passed away) that have boxes/beds with heating pads. All of these are in addition to our 5 indoor cats
