Meet The PetMorons

BennyBirthday.jpg

Benny

Hi,

I thought I'd share an interesting character that Pet Morons might appreciate.

Benny is a cockatoo, who has lived with ancient college buddy of mine, Kim, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. They have been together for 31 years which beats the span of my first marriage by fourteen years.

Kim worked for a long time doing surveying for the town, and on Benny's 31st birthday, the survey department presented Benny with a cake.

Benny can be a bit cranky and will shun Kim when he returns to the house after
leaving for any length of time. Over the holidays he (Kim, not Benny) visited his family for a few days. I asked Kim how Benny reacted when he got back home.

He laughed. "You won't believe it. He gave me a wolf whistle."

"Levin"

We know who controls THAT relationship. Might be best not to take Benny out on the town tonight . . . .

Thanks to CBD for formatting the video.

Start off with meeting the menagerie

These are Joker the cat, aka the mighty Jokey.

There's 15 years between the two pics. Yes, he's doing fine, just grey hairs showing, but don't we all.

He's giving me the stink eye cause I told him he couldn't jump up on me.

Joker the kitten grew into a fine Joker the cat.

Hello,

As I've mentioned a few times on the blog this week, a polydactyl cat has wandered into my AO. She just showed up a day or so before Christmas, right when the temperatures began to plummet.

She wove her wiley charms around me and convinced me to let her sleep in my sunroom over Christmas. My sunroom isn't heated, but it's a lot better than the freezing wind/ice/snow. I also gave her food and water (my fatal mistake).

This week I was able to take her to my vet to see if she had a chip, indicating someone else owned her (NO CHIP!). She does appear to be "fixed" as there is a detectable scar on her lower belly. Though there is no notch in her ear, which the vet said often indicates a "catch, fix, and release." They also hadn't had anyone calling about her.

She's very unusual in being a fully polydactyl cat with an extra toe on each paw. Also the warmest, softest kitty ever, friendly and affectionate.

So it looks like I may have yet another cat, at least for the time being, until someone contacts me about her...

I've included a couple of pics of the cat, including one pic of one of her paws, where I try to show her polydactylism (there's an odd split between the toes).

And I've named her "Hexie" because she 1) cast a spell over me and 2) has six toes on her front paws.
Enjoy!

"Perfessor" Squirrel's Home for Wayward Cats

We have had polydactyl garden kitties. The one with the most toes was also a good hunter of gophers and pretty mean. His front paws were really big. He was really feral. We did manage to get him fixed. Hexie looks much, much nicer.

8 I've never given any of my dogs bacon. I'm a total softie and also use them as pre-cleaners for greasy pans; but bacon I don't share. When I was on a several months streak of bacon with breakfast and accumulated more bacon grease than I was going to use cooking I did put that on Toby's kibble but actual bacon slices all went in my own mouth.

57 My last cat before Pretty Girl (Dorkie Dork) used to love the blood from steak or hamburger, and in the case of hamburger, the meat itself. (She was very dainty and had a hard time eating steak.) 59 Greetings to the fellow pet horde. Today, I have a very serious question and if I don't answer it successfully, there's a good chance my wife's going to make me get rid of our backyard kitten litter.

So, what's the best way to keep litterbox dust down to an absolute bare minimum? We can tolerate a little more smell as a tradeoff but the dust reduction is paramount. Litter brands, box placement, covering, location, what things help with this problem?

Thanks a million.

Hello, all! Great pets today. Yes, it is tough to light and snap pics of black cats. Maybe if they're outdoors in good light it works. Otherwise you have to wait for *just* the right combo of factors.

The "He sees you when you're sleeping" meme is exactly right. Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat would do that, except instead of breaking something she would start meowing. The late Wolf would climb up to the pillow and gently paw my head, so that I felt claws on my scalp. Very lightly, you understand, but claws nonetheless.

tuft + paw has a flushable litter that makes zero dust. it's super pricy tho

Dr Elsey's is low dust and hypoallergenic, which is why we use it!

and I've heard that Pretty Litter is low dust

only Dr Elsey is clay litter the others are made of something else (and have different consistency)

82 Love the Pet Thread. Kitties are our thing, but we only have 2 right now. I keep trying to get a good photo of them but neither of them like to get their picture taken. How do they know I'm trying to take a photo? They don't pay any attention to anything else I do with my phone.

83 So, what's the best way to keep litterbox dust down to an absolute bare minimum? We can tolerate a little more smell as a tradeoff but the dust reduction is paramount. Litter brands, box placement, covering, location, what things help with this problem?

--

We have our litter box in the laundry room. It's a covered one with a little door opening. It does help to contain the litter dust, but it's not absolute by any means. One thing I will say though...we have a male cat who goes wild in the litter box. It's like his playground and he gets in there and throws litter around like an elephant would douse its body with water. He comes out covered in powder.

85 This past Spring and Summer I started feeding a feral cat. I named her Missy. She eventually had 3 kittens. I have also been a dog person but those kittens stole my heart. With the help of a woman who deals with feral cats we caught Missy, the kittens, and who we believe was baby-daddy. All were fixed. The woman kept Missy, gave her parents baby-daddy and was able to adopt out the kittens. Also caught up in the "fix 'em" was a very large tabby that had been hunting on my property for a few years. He was about 5 yrs old and 7 lbs. and not fixed but soon to be. He was brought back to my property and released. That was the first week of June and have not seen him since. Then 3 days ago, crouching at the edge of the wild blackberry patch, there he was. I walk out on to the porch. He looked at me and I at him. He kept staring at me and I don't know if he was happy to see me or was saying "how could you!", but I was glad to see he was still alive and came back to hunt on my property.
Happy New Year pet lovers. Be safe.

We intend to visit a nearby grocery w/ deli, buy something prepared for dinner that we haven't tried before, and eat while watching a movie -- maybe one of the Perry Mason collection she got me for Xmas, or something vintage on YouTube.

The beasts? We'll give them something as well, and open up the crinkly tunnel I got for them from Petco.

Stirling the black kitten did that when he was 3-5 months old. Since the stuff I use is not powdery, he simply succeeded in knocking a lot of the litter out onto the floor.

Since the arrival of his little "sister" Dagny, he hasn't been doing that. He has more fun things to do.

In the past, when I've had a pair of cats, they have usually both been girls. Arizona the boy and Marie the girl did not get along, but that was crotchety AZ's fault, and they didn't fight. Wolf and Chekov, both boys, made friends in an hour. Stirling my current male was putting the moves on little Dagny until he got altered, and now they enjoy each other's company.

How is your male with other cats? Hissing and growling? You might still be able to work this, though, if you introduce them slowly.

133 I'm going to say thanks in advance even if there are more additions to the recommendations. What I'm hearing jibes fairly well with what I've been able to pull up off the net (Arm&Hammer, Dr. Elsey's, etc., etc.). My wife and I have also been discussing ways to "spread the load" by putting one litterbox outdoors while keeping the other inside, since some of the kittens prefer to be outdoors but would rather use a box.

Now to go patch the holes in me. "Orange", the male tabby of the bunch, just finished being lovey and using his claws to excess. And it isn't helping that he gained quite a bit of weight. If I could have read the future, I'd have named him "Chunk".

The bigger concern for me is the loner cat status, in that one has to be VERY careful introducing a new cat into the mix. It's not unlike bringing a second child home after your first has gotten used to all the attention.

There's a right way and wrong way to do it. Do it the right way. Because yeah, one cat is not really a good idea, if you aren't home all the time. The male/female thing? As long as neither is capable of mating, they should be fine... introduced slooooowly, that is.

She was an informal gal and one Christmas we were at here place. She was wearing sweats but also a corsage. She leaned over the fence to pet her favorite goat...who immediately started munching on the corsage. The whole family erupted in laughter. I think I have a pic somewhere. I'm sorry. Losing a furry family member is just the pits. I am glad, though that you were in each other's lives.

You're probably out now (I had to go out) practicing silly walks and perfecting accents to play various unexpected various party guests , but you are most welcome, Boswell . I enjoy posting spiritual things and I have appreciated our conversations. Best to you and your family too and God bless you all.

157 Dang. Napped through the Pet Thread again.

Thanks to the cobbers for this wonderful pet-loving Saturday post.

Let Daisy the madcap Malinois off the tether to chase a ball. She chased, caught, and then (not bringing the ball back) dashed past me and ran like crazy all around the area, and briefly out to the pasture. Finally came back to me.

One last wild romp for the year (we've had her since May).

Next year, more training.
