Thread before the Gardening Thread, December 3

There has been a lot of new information coming out this week that has been unnerving to a lot of people. And a lot of it seems downright crazy. But it feels like there is more to come. Imagine being the REAL, slow-blinking White House Press Secretary today. She is prone to adding an additional layer of crazy-making to many stories when asked to comment. IF she is asked.

I am unnerved, too. In a different way, I hope. There's too much information that I don't really understand. Best I can do at the moment is to marvel some at how we got here, and then turn back to other matters, like the holidays.

The Big Twitter Reveal

Ace pointed out last night that the tweet-by-tweet revelations about actions at The Old Twitter about Hunter's laptop took the focus off the FBI's malfeasance on this issue. But Elon Musk's main concern right now seems to be Twitter. He is a target. As an example, the EU has threatened to ban Twitter in Europe unless new owner Elon Musk adheres to its strict rules on content moderation. The U.S. government is not the only one pulling strings on the press and social media. The Twitter Reveal is a risk for Musk.

How did Musk come to choose Matt Taibbi for the Twitter reveal?

Well, I can't say for sure, but I have a clue. On November 30, Taibbi and Douglas Murray debated Malcolm Gladwell and Michelle Goldberg in the prestigious Munk Debates in Canada on this subject: "Be it resolved: Do not trust the mainstream media."

He posted his opening argument to his Substack as the debate began:

"Be it resolved: don't trust mainstream media." My name is Matt Taibbi, I've been a reporter for 30 years, and I argue for the resolution. You should not trust mainstream media.
I grew up in the press. My father was a reporter. My stepmother was a reporter. My godparents were reporters. Every adult I knew growing up seemed to be in media. I even used my father's TV mic flag as a toy. I'd go in the backyard, stand with my back to the house, and play "live shot":
Chet, I'm in Norwell, Massachusetts, where firefighters are battling a three-alarm blaze...

I love the news business. It's in my bones. But I mourn for it. It's destroyed itself.
My father had a saying: "The story's the boss." In the American context, if the facts tell you the Republicans were the primary villains in this or that disaster, you write that story. If the facts point more at Democrats, you go that way. If it turns out they're both culpable, as was often the case for me across nearly ten years of investigating Wall Street and the causes of the 2008 crash for Rolling Stone, you write that. We're not supposed to nudge facts one way or another. Our job is to call things as we see them and leave the rest up to you.
We don't do that now. The story is no longer the boss. Instead, we sell narrative, as part of a new business model that's increasingly indifferent to fact. . .

Well, Taibbi and Murray reportedly changed the views of the audience by the largest margin ever recorded in the Munk debates.

Incidentally, Douglas Murray went after the Canadian press hard for its ties to government.

There's a video of the debate if you have the patience to watch it. Taibbi called it "wild and oddly nasty". I don't think the transcripts of the debate have been released yet. But Taibbi is certainly on record for his opposition to the decline in the reliability of the press.

Of course, this also affects how we think about other forms of communication, such as Twitter.

Taibbi released a podcast with Walter Kirn (who calls him "Ace") last night, the same night as the big Twitter Reveal. They discuss both the Munk debate and the Twitter reveal. He's been busy.

17 The university where I don't teach anymore except for when I need beer money built a new music hall a few years back. Acoustics are incredible. You can hear a fly fart from the back row. So I took Mrs D to a playing of Handel's Messiah. Lord. How boring. It was two minutes of beautiful and a bunch of singing in a foreign language.
Sigh.
Still the two minutes were nice.

I saw a herd of deer as I was driving into a small town yesterday. At least one was a large multi-pointed buck. I marveled at how calm they were, eating what remained of the grass in a field.

When I told the person I was there to see, he went immediately to shooting them. I'm not a hunter, but must admit I didn't see that side of it. I was just thinking how beautiful they were.

21 The cited stuff from Taibbi is fine as far as it goes, but it clearly understates the problem, both the the scope (it's not just Rs vs Ds) and the severity (the "press" for some time has gone far beyond "shading" the facts, to outright fabrication, and of course close collusion with the "right people" to distort a story).

The line about "covering a story, with a pillow, until it dies" is both funny and precisely accurate.

Dunno about TN but here you can get a 5% discount at Buc-ee's if you use a credit card particular credit union. It's not a huge deal but it's enough to make it worth opening an account and direct-depositing just enough to cover an average month's gas use.

33 20 Pilot in this area is usually competitive or cheapest. Trouble with them is, being a gimp now, and I won't pay at the pump because I got nicked with a skimmer, the distance from the pumps to the register. Walk in, pay an estimate for a fill up, go pump, walk back in for change. One thing I miss in PA is the Quick Fill stations that had a guy there manning the pumps if you needed it.

39 Pretty sure Musk chose Taibbi because Taibbi -- like Glenn Greenwald -- has a reputation for speaking truth to power no matter who is in office. Taibbi was acclaimed for his anti-war reporting for Rolling Stone prior to 2008, when Rolling Stone suddenly decided they were no longer interested in criticizing those in power all of a sudden.

I'm always wary of enthusing about journalists I trust, because they always seem to disappoint me right after I do. But for the time being, I think both Taibbi and Greenwald have developed reputations for being principled, honest reporters.

Had a similar experience this week. The wife and I were at the same store on Monday. I haven't seen her since September. Literally the first time I've been in her presence... and it appears it was the day before she plans to leave town for good.

Our case has a "no contact" order in place, but I couldn't resist saying hi. There was essentially no contact, but not entirely none. The manner in which I realized she was there was so strange, I decided not to chance anything.

She still told her lawyer I violated the order. My lawyer merely me, if you run into her again (which I won't), don't even say hi.

Ok, sure. The universe put us in the same store, which was VERY unusual, at the same time. I don't know why. I only know it freaked her out something fierce.

That's true if you want the story to avoid the daily legacy media schedule, but not for something 24/7 like Twitter, which is trying to supplement or supplant that legacy media. Releasing on a Friday on Twitter keeps people on Twitter talking about it through the weekend when they're less preoccupied with work.

No shit. The entire point of an exchange is that you don't buy the crypto. The exchange holds it - holds they keys - so that you can do trades within the exchange without incurring an actual crypto transaction and the costs that entails.

Yeah, there's a handful of them. The thing is, they shouldn't be celebrated for being dogged about the truth. That's their job!

But there are so few of them, they single themselves out. Whitney Webb is another, but I wonder if she's gone too far down the rabbit hole, and among other things, believes Elon Musk is a phony who is playing everyone.

148 I just had a lovely morning and I wanted to share about it.Took a ride with the spouse through some lovely farmland in Hunterdon County (Yes; we have farmland in NJ) The weather is not nice, but the fields are, as are some of the old houses including the ones built in that 1700 and 1800s. We stopped at the Pennsylavania Dutch market (I guess they are Mennonite or Amish) bought some stuff and talked to some lovely people there. They have to get up at 2:00 in the morning to leave PA to come to NJ.

After that I had such a nice time talking to the people at the 2nd Calvary Baptist Church in a town 20 minutes away which was having a Christrmas bazaar, I had never been there before. It's lovely little sanctuary and the ladies and men were serving soup and sandwiches and also there were lot of baked goods (I bought too many) and candy and other things.:. It's largely an African American church although there were some white folks selling things too. This makes me happy-people of different races working together to support their little church and greeting everyone who visits so warmly and chatting with them.

Even today, after the truly unhinged jaw-dropping Total War on Trump - not just by the press, but by national institutions working with the press, not to mention pop culture, and the rest - Trump increased his vote total by more than any incumbent in history. So there's an echo of that other America. But I fear just an echo.

When it comes to trust, I think it's important to not be naive, which I was. We want to trust the other person, we LOVE them after all!

And it's not about testing them, it's about looking at what they do, and asking the question: Do I believe he/she is doing this from a loving place, inside a committed relationship? If the answer is yes, and we still disagree with the behavior, then focus on the behavior. Lovingly argue your point, your perspective. Then the disagreement doesn't have to be about trust.

The point is that railroad workers are under a federally regulated regime that is different from most other labor, and like the air traffic controllers can be ordered back to work...and presumably fired as Reagan did with the ATCs though obviously that isn't going to happen

I saw a similar one earlier this week where about 15-20 different local and national newscasts said the exact same line, word for word: "This misinformation and disinformation is a danger to our democracy."

Which should come as a surprise to no one who has been following politics for the past 2 decades. Journolist was outed, what, ~10-15 years ago? And Rush Limbaugh had been sharing these montages on his radio show for at least 10-15 years to expose this obvious propaganda programming collaboration.

As I said earlier, until there are consequences for any of this, absolutely nothing will change and they will continue to do it.

Ha! I'm currently working on a short story titled 'The Rehab Chronicles', based on my post-craniotomy time in the rehab hospital.

After a while, I began to feel sorry for the nurses, though they bore my marginally obtuse humor in with good nature.

The 'Chronicles' are strictly humorous. Humor is where you find it, and even in the situation I was in, there was plenty to be found...though most around me weren't very aware of it. 'Cognizance' tests proved to be particularly entertaining.

I admit to having an age advantage, as most of the staff were probably in their 30's or younger, and thus missed cues that would be apparent to most here.

When Reagan fired the ATC, White House counsel did a press conference, where they spelled out the steps they took, the legal argument, that they believed they had the authority to fire them when the union failed to comply.

This time it looks like the government just basically said "yeah, you gotta go back to work or else." Does anyone even know if they took whatever steps it would take to reach that point? Does anybody even care?

My problem is the government just makes these decisions, and everyone just accepts they have the authority.

I try not to assume these cases are as clear as they sometimes seem. I see people here sometimes arguing the whole "stand your ground" thing, and if somebody does ANYTHING that might be construed as not entirely in self defense, they want to throw the book at them.

All I know is, if there aren't going to be murder charges, when you kill someone in the act of committing other felonies, isn't it not supposed to matter whether you intended to kill them or not? In other words, if you rob a bank, and the guard kills your fellow robber, don't they often charge YOU with murder?

363 I agree the B-21 demo was kind of a letdown. They show the flying wing design (very similar to earlier renderings shown the public), and the front profile has a cool "UFO" kind of look, due to the rounded, sweeping cockpit lines. But they did it at night, from real far away.

You get to see *even less* of the B-21 than in the demos of the F-22 where they had to restrict all the camera angles so that Sukhoi couldn't get a sense of the thrust vectoring technology.

But... this is a long-range strategic nuclear bomber, not a fighter. If you can't show they cool plane for security reasons, you could *at least* demonstrate a payload delivery. That would make up for it.

Do you really think the top end countries don't already know the general visible configurations of any air frames the other countries are working on that exist in metal or full size model form? There's too much historical evidence that points to the 40s being the last era where things like that could be kept top secret. The Soviets even managed to get the A-bomb plans enough to work from back when that was the ultimate of ultimate technology secrets. And yet we see silly things like the USAF requiring the inlets and exhausts being removed and replaced with simulations from the F-117s being sent to air museums although that plane was designed in the early 80s.

Yeah... my garden finally died a couple weeks ago. We had a long summer/no fall here, so it lasted with flowers through October. It's all dead now.

Next year at least will be bad for the garden... gotta figure out which are annuals and perennials. I think most of them are annuals. But I'm from the Rockies, so I know jack about gardening. I expect I'll start going to that thread more.

This year was dreadful, and things that should have bloomed, either didn't or bloomed very late. But the vegetable season went on a long time and I was still picking tomatoes and lettuce into November.

My late first husband was a mechanic for a cargo airline. We flew to Vegas from Indy, no problem. Flight back , doing okay, then the pilot tells us that the weather in Indiana is not good. Light freezing rain and windy. oh and IU is up by ten points in their game that evening. I was freaking the fuck out by the time we landed. Trapped in a metal tube with not enough air and shitty weather outside and the pilot is listening to the fucking IU basketball game.

Some of my friend's stay-at-home moms were committed to state hospitals, too, usually for treatment of post-partum depression.

Also had a relative seek commitment into a mental health facility rather than go into a women's shelter and live under the direction of certain, evil peer counselor. (Florida mental health program, some years ago.)

I have the claustrophobia issue too, and avoid it whenever possible, but that flight sounds awful. A pilot paying attention to a college game? No thanks.
I am fortunate that both kids live within reasonable driving distance.

I'll be wheels up tomorrow, 4 flights in 3 days. Before 9/11 flying wasn't too bad but ever since it's been a pain in the ass, particularly getting through airports.

Back in the 80s neighbors used to joke about signing themselves into one of the more posh voluntary facilities so they could get a break and sit by the pool, ride horses, and take painting lessons.

These days, most of the NJ facilities have determined that if you're able to go to the pool, ride, or sit and paint, you do not need inpatient treatment. Many of them have only locked units.

I was on a flight to Minneapolis once and the woman sitting next to me was the wife of the pilot. She was terrified of flying and asked if she could hold my hand for takeoff. She didn't let go until we landed.

433 We flew in to Tokyo and back out just ahead of a typhoon. That landing sucked. Big time! One of our flights in China the landing was very steep. It felt like we were gonna lawn dart. My ears were fucked up for days.

444 I watched the debate. I got a kick out of Taibbi holding Cronkite up as a paragon of objectivity -- he was a lefty who despised the Republicans and lied about Vietnam. And even more entertaining was Malc, who said that Cronkite had a breasted interest in supporting the government.

Both need to learn a little bit more history.
