white house new press secretary.jpg

There has been a lot of new information coming out this week that has been unnerving to a lot of people. And a lot of it seems downright crazy. But it feels like there is more to come. Imagine being the REAL, slow-blinking White House Press Secretary today. She is prone to adding an additional layer of crazy-making to many stories when asked to comment. IF she is asked.

I am unnerved, too. In a different way, I hope. There's too much information that I don't really understand. Best I can do at the moment is to marvel some at how we got here, and then turn back to other matters, like the holidays.

The Big Twitter Reveal

Ace pointed out last night that the tweet-by-tweet revelations about actions at The Old Twitter about Hunter's laptop took the focus off the FBI's malfeasance on this issue. But Elon Musk's main concern right now seems to be Twitter. He is a target. As an example, the EU has threatened to ban Twitter in Europe unless new owner Elon Musk adheres to its strict rules on content moderation. The U.S. government is not the only one pulling strings on the press and social media. The Twitter Reveal is a risk for Musk.

How did Musk come to choose Matt Taibbi for the Twitter reveal?

Well, I can't say for sure, but I have a clue. On November 30, Taibbi and Douglas Murray debated Malcolm Gladwell and Michelle Goldberg in the prestigious Munk Debates in Canada on this subject: "Be it resolved: Do not trust the mainstream media."

He posted his opening argument to his Substack as the debate began:

"Be it resolved: don't trust mainstream media." My name is Matt Taibbi, I've been a reporter for 30 years, and I argue for the resolution. You should not trust mainstream media.

I grew up in the press. My father was a reporter. My stepmother was a reporter. My godparents were reporters. Every adult I knew growing up seemed to be in media. I even used my father's TV mic flag as a toy. I'd go in the backyard, stand with my back to the house, and play "live shot":

Chet, I'm in Norwell, Massachusetts, where firefighters are battling a three-alarm blaze...

I love the news business. It's in my bones. But I mourn for it. It's destroyed itself.

My father had a saying: "The story's the boss." In the American context, if the facts tell you the Republicans were the primary villains in this or that disaster, you write that story. If the facts point more at Democrats, you go that way. If it turns out they're both culpable, as was often the case for me across nearly ten years of investigating Wall Street and the causes of the 2008 crash for Rolling Stone, you write that. We're not supposed to nudge facts one way or another. Our job is to call things as we see them and leave the rest up to you.

We don't do that now. The story is no longer the boss. Instead, we sell narrative, as part of a new business model that's increasingly indifferent to fact. . .

Well, Taibbi and Murray reportedly changed the views of the audience by the largest margin ever recorded in the Munk debates.

Incidentally, Douglas Murray went after the Canadian press hard for its ties to government.

*

There's a video of the debate if you have the patience to watch it. Taibbi called it "wild and oddly nasty". I don't think the transcripts of the debate have been released yet. But Taibbi is certainly on record for his opposition to the decline in the reliability of the press.

Of course, this also affects how we think about other forms of communication, such as Twitter.

There is powerful opposition to freedom of expression:

*

Taibbi released a podcast with Walter Kirn (who calls him "Ace") last night, the same night as the big Twitter Reveal. They discuss both the Munk debate and the Twitter reveal. He's been busy.

We better make sure we don't get our orders switched!" (Cont'd)

I saw a herd of deer as I was driving into a small town yesterday. At least one was a large multi-pointed buck. I marveled at how calm they were, eating what remained of the grass in a field.

When I told the person I was there to see, he went immediately to shooting them. I'm not a hunter, but must admit I didn't see that side of it. I was just thinking how beautiful they were.

21 The cited stuff from Taibbi is fine as far as it goes, but it clearly understates the problem, both the the scope (it's not just Rs vs Ds) and the severity (the "press" for some time has gone far beyond "shading" the facts, to outright fabrication, and of course close collusion with the "right people" to distort a story).

The line about "covering a story, with a pillow, until it dies" is both funny and precisely accurate.

39 Pretty sure Musk chose Taibbi because Taibbi -- like Glenn Greenwald -- has a reputation for speaking truth to power no matter who is in office. Taibbi was acclaimed for his anti-war reporting for Rolling Stone prior to 2008, when Rolling Stone suddenly decided they were no longer interested in criticizing those in power all of a sudden.

I'm always wary of enthusing about journalists I trust, because they always seem to disappoint me right after I do. But for the time being, I think both Taibbi and Greenwald have developed reputations for being principled, honest reporters.

Had a similar experience this week. The wife and I were at the same store on Monday. I haven't seen her since September. Literally the first time I've been in her presence... and it appears it was the day before she plans to leave town for good.

Our case has a "no contact" order in place, but I couldn't resist saying hi. There was essentially no contact, but not entirely none. The manner in which I realized she was there was so strange, I decided not to chance anything.

She still told her lawyer I violated the order. My lawyer merely me, if you run into her again (which I won't), don't even say hi.

Ok, sure. The universe put us in the same store, which was VERY unusual, at the same time. I don't know why. I only know it freaked her out something fierce.

That's true if you want the story to avoid the daily legacy media schedule, but not for something 24/7 like Twitter, which is trying to supplement or supplant that legacy media. Releasing on a Friday on Twitter keeps people on Twitter talking about it through the weekend when they're less preoccupied with work.

No shit. The entire point of an exchange is that you don't buy the crypto. The exchange holds it - holds they keys - so that you can do trades within the exchange without incurring an actual crypto transaction and the costs that entails.

Its no different than "owning" gold on paper at a metals exchange. And just as retarded, usually, for the same reasons.

70 Tom Servo, a non people coincidence story. I used to mess around with old VW Beetles. I'm at the mall picking up stuff for the wife, leave and get into a blue 67 bug, put the key in, and off I go. And then I realize the ashtray was factory clean and other stuff. Shit, this isn't my car. Go back to the mall, see mine a row over, and a guy standing at the empty parking space. Apologized, and he said he thought he was off a row and was going to take mine. His key would have worked.

The elites don't care that the election was stolen.
Some of them, like Brit, have their head so far up their asses they can't see the ramifications.

This is a big deal. This isn't a one off like Kennedy or Johnson this was a concerted and successful effort by the opposing political party, the communists.
As Dave in Fla noted:

" 2022 is the first time in history that the election results did not reflect the national mood of the country.

Four sailors based in Norfolk have died from apparent suicides in the last month, the U.S. Navy confirmed Friday....the sailors were assigned to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC)...the incidents are separate and are considered to be apparent suicides.

“This is not specific to this command, we’re talking about people. Will you ever eliminate suicide in the Navy? No. Because humans struggle with existential crisis, depression, and anxiety. I don’t believe it’s the Navy’s job to fix everybody’s mental health, but it is their job to provide the ample resources," said Kayla Arestivo.

parents of sailors who died by suicide have said the Navy has done little to adequately address a fleetwide issue. They also criticized the U.S. military for not yet implementing the Brandon Act, which allows service members to confidentially seek mental health help... The Brandon Act? Mental Health? I don't know. The whole Epstein thing was sold as something other than what it really is. Namely, it's about who is part of the club, not that this guy was a perv who prostituted underaged girls. 148 I just had a lovely morning and I wanted to share about it.Took a ride with the spouse through some lovely farmland in Hunterdon County (Yes; we have farmland in NJ) The weather is not nice, but the fields are, as are some of the old houses including the ones built in that 1700 and 1800s. We stopped at the Pennsylavania Dutch market (I guess they are Mennonite or Amish) bought some stuff and talked to some lovely people there. They have to get up at 2:00 in the morning to leave PA to come to NJ.

After that I had such a nice time talking to the people at the 2nd Calvary Baptist Church in a town 20 minutes away which was having a Christrmas bazaar, I had never been there before. It's lovely little sanctuary and the ladies and men were serving soup and sandwiches and also there were lot of baked goods (I bought too many) and candy and other things.:. It's largely an African American church although there were some white folks selling things too. This makes me happy-people of different races working together to support their little church and greeting everyone who visits so warmly and chatting with them.

155 Actually the "press" in the US is not as uniform or under control as those were in Nazi Germany or the USSR. Nor did those populations all completely disregard what they were fed. The current American populace is shockingly ignorant and misinformed, and easily brainwashed, thanks to the collapse of education and critical thinking.

Those who lived through the Reagan era, especially if you were close to the center of things, were often amazed that after the nearly uniformly hostile and unfair treatment he received from the get-go, that he won re-election with 49 states. Or Nixon. The populace then had the ability to think for themselves, filter out the nonsense the press was feeding them, as needed, and make their own decisions.

Even today, after the truly unhinged jaw-dropping Total War on Trump - not just by the press, but by national institutions working with the press, not to mention pop culture, and the rest - Trump increased his vote total by more than any incumbent in history. So there's an echo of that other America. But I fear just an echo.

157 Came out of local clinic and went to get into my used dark green Beamer sedan. But I noted some asshole had put a Hillary bumper sticker on it! Then the keyless fob didn't work... finally figured out it wasn't my car.
Mine was right next to it! But the fob didn't work again! But when I pressed it I heard a noise, and when I turned around, I realized the next car was mine! Three essentially identical cars in a row!

Years ago I went to see an old friend in a city several hours away. Parked in front of his house and rang the bell. His wife answered and after I introduced myself, she yelled into the house saying I was here, and asking why the hell hadn't he moved the car around back so I had a place to park?!
We had absolutely identical cars, make, model, year and color!

158 At some point after divorce you have to make the decision that your aren't going to be angry any more. You have to take that power away from your ex. They can no longer make you mad or sad or influence your feelings or your actions. They just are. Doesn't make what happened ok. Doesn't make what they may have done or said forgiven. It just no longer has power over you any more.

It's empowering to tell yourself, "I'm done being miserable or angry because of this person."

You have to be ready to give it up. But when you do, it's nice to take back your person. Because the anger and resentment and hurt can take you over.

As they have been doing for at least the last 2-3 decades. Donald Trump has been the only non-Deep State politician in a position of influence in the American federal government since I started paying attention to politics (Sept 12, 2001). And the Deep State got rid of him within 4 years.

Wake me up when the WEF and China no longer control the USA Deep State... and when the Deep State no longer controls the US Federal government and every corporation and institution in the nation save for Twitter. The Twitter Files dump is nothing but a crisis that the Deep State will not let go to waste. They will likely use it to argue that now the government must take full control of the internet.

When it comes to trust, I think it's important to not be naive, which I was. We want to trust the other person, we LOVE them after all!

And it's not about testing them, it's about looking at what they do, and asking the question: Do I believe he/she is doing this from a loving place, inside a committed relationship? If the answer is yes, and we still disagree with the behavior, then focus on the behavior. Lovingly argue your point, your perspective. Then the disagreement doesn't have to be about trust.

The Railway Labor Act is a United States federal law on US labor law that governs labor relations in the railroad and airline industries. The Act, enacted in 1926 and amended in 1934 and 1936, seeks to substitute bargaining, arbitration, and mediation for strikes to resolve labor disputes. Its provisions were originally enforced under the Board of Mediation, but they were later enforced under a National Mediation Board.

Yea, but my point is our media is almost as bad as anything that exists in a totalitarian state. The entire Russia collusion hoax couldn't have happened without the intel community using the media as their PR operation. We know the truth but we are a very small segment of the population.

The reason the media is so pissed at Musk for taking their Twitter toy is now opposing voices can be heard and Twitter is no longer reinforcing and often creating the narratives for them. I hope Musk has a small army of security.

Think so? Go take a look at the NYT, the WaPo or any of the usual MSM narrative builders and search for honest reporting on the laptop. When they do mention it it is only to spin and deflect.

The Ukrainians are too stupid to buy into the Climate Catastrophe therefore another solution to curtail their food production was necessary.

Yes. Per Wikipedia:

The Railway Labor Act is a United States federal law on US labor law that governs labor relations in the railroad and airline industries. The Act, enacted in 1926 and amended in 1934 and 1936, seeks to substitute bargaining, arbitration, and mediation for strikes to resolve labor disputes. Its provisions were originally enforced under the Board of Mediation, but they were later enforced under a National Mediation Board.

Which should come as a surprise to no one who has been following politics for the past 2 decades. Journolist was outed, what, ~10-15 years ago? And Rush Limbaugh had been sharing these montages on his radio show for at least 10-15 years to expose this obvious propaganda programming collaboration.

The 'Chronicles' are strictly humorous. Humor is where you find it, and even in the situation I was in, there was plenty to be found...though most around me weren't very aware of it. 'Cognizance' tests proved to be particularly entertaining.

I admit to having an age advantage, as most of the staff were probably in their 30's or younger, and thus missed cues that would be apparent to most here.

When Reagan fired the ATC, White House counsel did a press conference, where they spelled out the steps they took, the legal argument, that they believed they had the authority to fire them when the union failed to comply.

This time it looks like the government just basically said "yeah, you gotta go back to work or else." Does anyone even know if they took whatever steps it would take to reach that point? Does anybody even care?

My problem is the government just makes these decisions, and everyone just accepts they have the authority.

275 The longer, full Chesterton quote excerpted above:

The journalists would appear to be in an almost literal sense the priests of the modern world. They may not rise precisely to the tremendous responsibility which was laid upon Peter, but at least it can be said that whatever they bind on earth is bound on earth, and whatever they loose on earth is loosed on earth. They have essentially and absolutely the same functions that were employed by the old priests, but their power for deceit is even greater and their responsibility to the world even less. A comparison between the priests and the journalists would be striking in many points. [...] The priest's influence and power consisted almost entirely in the fact that he was the only man who brought news...

277 2/2 Chesterton quote

the corruption of the priesthood occurred at the precise moment in which it changed from a minority organised to impart knowledge into a minority organised to withhold it. The great danger of decadence in journalism is almost exactly the same. Journalism possesses in itself the potentiality of becoming one of the most frightful monstrosities and delusions that have ever cursed mankind. This horrible transformation will occur at the exact instant at which journalists realise that they can become an aristocracy.

286 Chesterton had a lot of quotes about journalism such as this one:

It is the one great weakness of journalism as a picture of our modern existence, that it must be a picture made up entirely of exceptions. We announce on flaring posters that a man has fallen off a scaffolding. We do not announce on flaring posters that a man has not fallen off a scaffolding. Yet this latter fact is fundamentally more exciting, as indicating that that moving tower of terror and mystery, a man, is still abroad upon the earth. That the man has not fallen off a scaffolding is really more sensational; and it is also some thousand times more common. But journalism cannot reasonably be expected thus to insist upon the permanent miracles.

There are a lot more than the law are even aware of, because many (most?) are illegal. I watched a news special on Vietnamese girls who come to the US, smuggled in illegally (at least sometimes in cargo containers).

They go to work in "Nail salons" hoping to make their fortune but are trapped in the US unable to speak the language, with no contacts, and no idea of how the culture works. They end up as hookers doing "massages" in the back and eventually are sent back to Vietnam with little money, if any.

337 Macron of Fwahnce, in speech, says that "security guarantees" for Russia might need to be included in future discussions of a "security architecture" for Europe.
Ya think?

This topic was at the center of bilateral US-Russia talks that started in Geneva in March 2021 (which seem to be a secret to everyone writing and talking about the current unpleasantness). Even the term "security architecture", AFAIK, is a Russian term of art for the subject, not a US or NATO one.

The actual record of what transpired at the table in Geneva would be very good to know. US version is that Russian demands were unreasonable. Plausible - but then you make a counter-offer, you don't fold up the tent. Russia was ostentatiously positioning forces near Ukraine during the entire period of the Geneva talks.

Dying to see the minutes of those talks. THIS is something that historically Congress can help with via hearings. Open session - not closed, as when the idiotic crap from the Dems about April Glaspie's meeting with Saddam in '90 was completely debunked in closed session by the SFRC.

I'm talking specifically about the Epstein girls... and related operations. Some of which were recruited by supposedly legitimate modeling agencies, then the girls are whisked off to the island (or the other locations), are basically held prisoner, and this creepy guy with the egg shaped penis comes in and you're supposed to give him a "massage."

There are thousands of those girls, supposedly. Most of whom, nobody knows where they are now.

are making the problem worse.
This week my organization, Consumers’ Research, joined 13 state attorneys general in a complaint against Vanguard at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

With more than $7 trillion in assets under management, the Pennsylvania-based investment firm has publicly committed to pressuring utilities to lower their emissions.

Vanguard appears to be not only putting America’s critical infrastructure at risk but violating its agreement only to control utility company shares passively.

363 I agree the B-21 demo was kind of a letdown. They show the flying wing design (very similar to earlier renderings shown the public), and the front profile has a cool "UFO" kind of look, due to the rounded, sweeping cockpit lines. But they did it at night, from real far away.

You get to see *even less* of the B-21 than in the demos of the F-22 where they had to restrict all the camera angles so that Sukhoi couldn't get a sense of the thrust vectoring technology.

But... this is a long-range strategic nuclear bomber, not a fighter. If you can't show they cool plane for security reasons, you could *at least* demonstrate a payload delivery. That would make up for it.

One of the most cynical things ever.

The Soviet Union said "Ok, we get it... because of the millions of people who we hemmed up in labor camps for no reason whatsoever, our globe-spanning machinery of violence and repression has somehow managed to get a bad reputation. Whatever. I guess we can't just shovel whole nations into the fuckin' grinder anymore, because everyone has the sadz about it. But... people out there *are* still guilty of dangerous ideological heterodoxy, and we certainly can't have that. So as long as we label dissent as madness, we can shovel smaller numbers of higher-quality people into even crueler institutions, and you weak western toadies will report it as progress, right?"

And that was right. The USSR under Brezhnev was absolutely correct in that assessment.

Do you really think the top end countries don't already know the general visible configurations of any air frames the other countries are working on that exist in metal or full size model form? There's too much historical evidence that points to the 40s being the last era where things like that could be kept top secret. The Soviets even managed to get the A-bomb plans enough to work from back when that was the ultimate of ultimate technology secrets. And yet we see silly things like the USAF requiring the inlets and exhausts being removed and replaced with simulations from the F-117s being sent to air museums although that plane was designed in the early 80s.

There was no "playfulness" involved in the case of the fake selective mutism. In fact the symptoms were allegedly brought on by a "trauma" that was going to be part of a lawsuit. Needless to say that they wanted to keep the game going, and how medicine was useless.

As for the typical smart ass "if you want bipolar I'll give you bipolar" or the " I hallucinate that I see Freddy Krueger in my closet, splashing blood", all I and to say was "I will write that down as stated if you don't care to retract".

Should you let someone play sick for secondary gain? I don't think so.
As for the smart ass trolls, I couldn't say, "you're a liar", but offered the choice of documentation of the "psychosis"

I hate it. I'm claustrophobic as hell and flying stomps that panic button. I have managed to get through several flights relatively unscathed but some have been hellish.
My late first husband was a mechanic for a cargo airline. We flew to Vegas from Indy, no problem. Flight back , doing okay, then the pilot tells us that the weather in Indiana is not good. Light freezing rain and windy. oh and IU is up by ten points in their game that evening. I was freaking the fuck out by the time we landed. Trapped in a metal tube with not enough air and shitty weather outside and the pilot is listening to the fucking IU basketball game.

417 364. So did a few physicians & husbands of non-working women, in particular, decades ago.

An aunt was committed to Haverford State Hospital (built 1964, shuttered 199 in PA a few times because she gave her husband a lot of lip & later said he spoiled their two young sons to the point of being completely disrespectful & she was about to beat their butts. My grandfather (her father) finally put his foot down, and in son-in-law's butt, to stop that nonsense.

Some of my friend's stay-at-home moms were committed to state hospitals, too, usually for treatment of post-partum depression.

Also had a relative seek commitment into a mental health facility rather than go into a women's shelter and live under the direction of certain, evil peer counselor. (Florida mental health program, some years ago.)

I have the claustrophobia issue too, and avoid it whenever possible, but that flight sounds awful. A pilot paying attention to a college game? No thanks.
I am fortunate that both kids live within reasonable driving distance.

420 >>Same here. Used to love flying and now have zero desire to do it again.

I'll be wheels up tomorrow, 4 flights in 3 days. Before 9/11 flying wasn't too bad but ever since it's been a pain in the ass, particularly getting through airports.

What made it worse was the airplane mechanic husband laughing at me and acting like it was some great hilarious joke. I'm glad Hubbymayhem is a truck driver.

A lot has changed.

And post-partum depression can be deadly.

Back in the 80s neighbors used to joke about signing themselves into one of the more posh voluntary facilities so they could get a break and sit by the pool, ride horses, and take painting lessons.

These days, most of the NJ facilities have determined that if you're able to go to the pool, ride, or sit and paint, you do not need inpatient treatment. Many of them have only locked units.

To be honest, that's the guy/gal I want flying that plane. Just another day in the cockpit.

You might be right, but with crappy weather and some turbulance, I'd feel even worse if he was talking basketball.

427 The deer thing is pure fluff. When we kill a deer/elk, we put on the coveralls for the ticks and fleas, hang the fucker and gut it immediately. Cut off the scent glands, then skin it and toss the hide with the guts. Then behead it. Then quarter it if necessary. It's not a prop for a parade.

Understood. I've had a handful of not-so-fun flights myself. Personally, I get a bit antsy when the aircraft is a rockin' and the pilot is not saying much. Heh.

430 >>I was so freaked out I was having trouble breathing. I was very awful.

I was on a flight to Minneapolis once and the woman sitting next to me was the wife of the pilot. She was terrified of flying and asked if she could hold my hand for takeoff. She didn't let go until we landed.

433 We flew in to Tokyo and back out just ahead of a typhoon. That landing sucked. Big time! One of our flights in China the landing was very steep. It felt like we were gonna lawn dart. My ears were fucked up for days.

Good! They are so full of diseases these days. NJ is always putting out notices about anaplasmosis and other crap. A couple years ago, there was a TB announcement.

>Chronic wasting disease is the most prevalent in this area. Luckily I have a very select, predictable group of animals that have a morning / night migratory routine that keeps them clean.

443 The fact that Taibbi's team blasted their opposition to smithereens, and changed people's minds, shows that if only someone (like the Repubs) would articulate such opposition, the country would be freer and less divided.

444 I watched the debate. I got a kick out of Taibbi holding Cronkite up as a paragon of objectivity -- he was a lefty who despised the Republicans and lied about Vietnam. And even more entertaining was Malc, who said that Cronkite had a breasted interest in supporting the government.

Both need to learn a little bit more history.
