Ace of Spades Pet Thread, November 12

stopped having thoughts.jpg

This is Teddy. He decided a while ago to simply stop having any thoughts. Has never been happier.

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's pay some attention to the critters and leave the world of politics outside today. That can wait. It's been a trying week.

Yes, there is a whole thread full of them. Heh.

You know me as Marty. This is Sunny, whom you met as an 8 week old kitten in June. He's now almost 7 months old and a very big boi. Here he's assisting me in my home office.

He looks like a BIG help in the office.

luluuuu.jpg

From Liz:

It didn't take long for me to start looking for another canine friend after I said goodbye to Lexi back in August. I put in an application for adoption at my local Humane Society (3 pages of screening questions), and got a call back within a few days...would I consider an older dog? Of course. So I met Lulu. She's 13, and was surrendered because her family had taken up raising chickens, and Lulu killed 2 chicks. The woman took the dog (who they'd had since a puppy) to the Humane Society, along with her children -- ages 4 and 6, who were crying hysterically. Personally, I thought this was beyond cruel. I'm not sure who I felt more sad about -- the dog or the kids. Lulu is a dream. She moved right in, assuming her place as the princess of the house. She's healthy, gentle, attentive, and very lively, despite her age. I am determined that she has comfort and love in her final years.

It's so great to see your new companion and to learn a little about her, Liz!

Hello, this is Socks, a 3 year old cat which showed up at my sister's house a bit more than a year ago.

She is enjoying the nice fall weather.

I visited sis' and found this cat is just a big ole love bucket.

Sister doesn't spend any money on pets so I covered a vet visit, got the shots up to date, flea treatment, etc.

The best part is I built her a cat house (heated) so she will be comfortable for the winter.

I have returned home and I miss Socks.

Thanks for the pet thread!

"Gourmand du jour"

Hope you get to see Socks again soon. You are a great kitty uncle.

Dear AOS,

G'Kar is an ACD, and true to his breed he is overactive, tireless, loving, bright, and goofy. He frequently has the hint of a sneer on his lip...leading to him being nicknamed Billy after Billy Idol's sneer.

As for a nick at the site, I'd prefer to be labelled as Don Draper if it's not taken.

Bob from Northern Michigan

Anybody know if Don Draper is taken?

Impressive doggo. Memorable face!

Long time daily lurker, very occasional commenter as Terentia. I followed a link here from Llama Butchers. In May, I rescued three 2 week old orphaned kittens. Unfortunately two didn't make it and the surviving kitten, a female calico, had severe neurological problems. She tremored continuously and had great difficulty walking.

In June, a neighbor found a litter and was taking them to animal control. I took one of the kittens, a 6 week old male tabby. Almost immediately, the new kitten began playing with the sick kittie and within 10 days, the problems were all gone. They are now 6 months old. Meet Dot and Dexter. Thank you for the pet thread.

What a great story, and what a strikingly beautiful pair of cats! They just seem meant to be together.

A wonderful collection of pet stories today. Thank you each and everyone for sharing your pets with us.

3 Yay, Pet Thread. Teddy is one goofy-looking dog!

Another dog rescued.

On Monday, daughter and a friend of hers were on their way out here to help with some chores, when — on the highway near the dump — they found a small dog running scared.

It took a little coaxing, but once the dog quit being terrified, it gratefully jumped into the car with them. They came on out, and we got to meet the dog (chores were not really done). Daisy, our madcap Malinois, was delighted and the two of them wrestled and played like old friends. We brought out food for both of them, but Daisy let the obviously-ravenous pup eat it all. They did, hilariously, both slurp up water together.

They took the dog to the local shelter, when it opened on Tuesday. The shelter couldn't take the dog in, but they scanned it for a chip - none found. Dog had no collar.

Continued (thanks, Pixy)

9 continuing

Daughter has a small house with husband, two dogs, and two cats. MiladyJo and I have all we can handle with the Malinois. So, SonM took it in for a couple of nights until we could get it to our vet on Friday. Son already has a big Malamute (Jarl, featured on here before), and Merlin the old Cat. Evidently little dog imprinted on both Jarl and our Son, following them everywhere. Jarl was fatherly. Merlin was - tolerant. The pup was warm, fed, and with friends before the weather turned wet & cold.

Our vet found a chip had meandered from the back to the shoulder. Called the number, but the phone number had been reassigned. Dead end for now. Chip said his name was Elvis. But we can fix that.

10 Must stop in here for a brief update. Not sure how much anyone remembers, but a few weeks ago I thought we might have to put our oldest kitty down.

Nope. All the tests came back showing she was experiencing some treatable symptoms, but the big stuff all looked great!

So... with my impending move, I've selected a place for us to rent, before we settle all the other things that need to be settled, and with rentals, one must be aware of the limits on pets. I was working with a realty company, and she asked me how many cats I have. At the time I said we have three now, but it might be two soon, I wasn't sure. She said "No! You have two cats!"

Okie dokie then. I feel a little better about not being honest about it now. Two it is. Or so it says on the paperwork.

Afternoon, Pet Threadians.

Diana and Rosalind had their first baths this week. Both did very well, both in the tub and on the grooming table being blown dry. No screaming, no thrashing. Eventually they'll exhibit all the passive-aggressive tactics Borzoi girls imbibe with mother's milk, but we're happy their good temperaments were on display.

He was even on the phone with a friend and I could hear him saying “yeah, I know, but I have to admit, these cats are pretty cool. But they aren’t cat cats.”

Yes, they are “cat cats”. Savannahs are just very dog like in that they aren’t aloof, they are pretty needy with attention and they fetch. 😀

40 35. My first year in college, my mom and stepfather number 2 moved and decided her old Schnauzer was not coming. She, and it's one of the better things she ever did, rehomed him with a nice neighbor who wanted a friend for the Schnauzer she already had. The move didn't work out well and she went back to her old job and moved back to the old town. The neighbor refused to let her have the doggie back. She never got another and that's for the best.

My brother, a HS Senior who had to move in with an aunt, was not given the option of taking Fritz to live with auntie's schnauzer, so an element of anger toward the kids was detected. I suspect the woman who dropped Lulu at the shelter was angry that the kids loved the dog, but like little kids, were not ready for full responsibility

I'm no expert but I think a lot of shows have "pet quality" entrances where you can show your own pets with not quite the rigorous judging of the purebreds that might be a way to get your feet wet.

50 43. I have F2 Savannahs that are both theoretically 40% Serval, they aren’t allowed in any show venue, though honestly with the level of Serval they have, it would be pretty stressful for them even if it was allowed. While they are just kitty cats, there are some distinct differences in their behaviors from a domestic cat or even an SBT Savannah, which is the level they can be shown as all the serval has been bred out.

If I ever get another dog, I think I would look into agility. That looks super fun!

54 Nowhere near as sad a story as Lulu's, but we still can't believe that our Luna's family gave her up. They'd had her since she was a puppy but when the lockdowns eased up they started traveling more. Luna didn't handle kennels well, so they "surrendered" her at the age of 4.

Back in the 60's and 70's of course there was no pet insurance. Our vet was very accommodating and allowed payment overtime. It was also the time of no leash laws and dogs went out and were called in just like the kids. All of our pets lived long lives . One of my dogs was there before I started kindergarten and was there to see me start college.

Baby Dagny did fine at the vet this morning. Some fluids, an ultrasound to prove she is really is not knocked up, a bit of fever, a general diagnosis of upper respiratory infection, and some Clavamox 2x a day. She is sitting on my lap now, not really purring -- making a noise something like a car that is missing on one cylinder. (Hard for me to type like this.) I hope she recovers soon.

70 My brother and his wife just got a a 3 year old Golden Retriever who is a real sweetheart (being a sweetheart is, of course, part of Golden Retriever DNA). Her previous owners were not mean to her, but they were clearly very neglectful - Honey was very dirty and matted and is a very fat girl. No table scraps for her, at least until they can slim her down to a healthier weight, she's built like a barrel now. She is quite funny - when you pet her, she makes a sound that sounds like a cross between a growl and a purr. I've never heard a dog "purr" before. My brother tells me she also snores very loudly - that could be due to her weight.

Possibly. And if the chicken business is now essential to their survival, they could not afford to lose birds to a chicken-killing dog. But couldn't she have given the dog to a neighbor? Unless all their neighbors are in the same business. Urk.

83 You know,
This is all a reflection of the value of life. Of relationships. Of an alliance or duty. No one wants to dedicate or promise anything to anyone. I include our creatures in that. There's no kinship or promise.

It's a reflection on society. No one gives a shit unless it benefits them.

86 I mentioned, on another thread this week, that my dog has been waking me up every two hours. Someone recommended I get another dog. If only Stirling would hold off until 3 am. He's more of a problem when I am trying to *get* to sleep. I've taken to putting the litter box out in the kitchen and locking the kittens out of the bedroom at night. When I open up Stirling throws himself on me and bumps and nuzzles. So I guess he doesn't mind too much.

90 She is quite funny - when you pet her, she makes a sound that sounds like a cross between a growl and a purr. I've never heard a dog "purr" before. My brother tells me she also snores very loudly - that could be due to her weight.

Posted by: Donna&&&&&&&&V at November 12, 2022 04:34 PM

Our Rhodesian Ridgeback would talk to us. It was like what you said, part growl and part something else. When she wanted something she was very vocal about it.

The snoring may not be due to weight. Molly (Black Dog Three) snores and she is two years old and lean as a whip. I have to shake her awake two or three times a night some nights to make her stop. She also sometimes sleeps on her back with all four of her legs straight up in the air.

91 The ACD photo made me miss my... friend? partner? buddy? brother? Blue.
I'm in the camp that ACD's aren't 'pets', they're whatever they are. Blue most certainly wasn't my 'pet', EVER.
I now am in the house with two cats, both rescues.
One thinks she's my wife, the other is a shelter pickup, and by the way, what shelters are you around with all these screenings? We saw this last little shit on the website, saw she'd been there for like 3 months, paid like $40, stuffed her in a carrier and took her home immediately.
Where she has proven to be... well, honestly... not too bright.
I get the whole not understanding the laser dot or maybe wet food, maybe this cat was under-socialized or was a barn cat or something but really?
This last one is, well, kind of... well, she's just not smart.
Not a fast learner. Can't figure out how to push open doors, curtains were a Magical Force Field! and when she bashed into a glass window because Oh! It's invisible! Yeah, not an Einstein.

92 83. Agree, nurse.
I have an old friend, a single, self-professed “cat lady.” At one point she was near homelessness because she had 5 cats and no potential roommate/landlord would allow that many. Friend wouldn’t consider finding a new and good home for any of them. I found her stance there unfortunate…but she did work out a decent situation in the end.

From my and others experiences once a dog starts killing any kind of livestock it's pretty much over. You either have to remove the dog or the livestock. Not saying that lady made the right decision, but she had to make a decision. Personally I would have removed the chickens myself rather than the dog.

I would love to have a herd of chickens but I know that both of our dogs would do everything they could to get at them and kill them.

99 LenNeal, I dunno, I think the shelters with all the screenings may be in more urban areas where they see a lot of returns or surrenders. In Feb. I was attracted to a long-haired black cat on Petfinder at a shelter within an hour of me. They sent me a 4-page application full of nosey-parker questions. When I spotted Stirling, I was very pleased to hear that the shelter merely wanted a reference from my current vet, and didn't require face diapers at their shop. It was worth the 8-hour round trip to get him (and he has been worth it too).

Many many years ago I had a kitten that was waking me up at night and I took to hugging her close and talking to her in a squeaky voice like an annoying aunt that pinches your cheek. It was so horrifying that she not only learned herself but she taught all the new kittens for 20 years not to do so, and those kittens have taught new kittens so that I haven't had to train any cats since. They all know the rules!

I've run into rescues that have pulled that. One of my elderly cats had a partial stroke and lost a lot of control of her back legs but learned to spread her back feet into a tripod stance somewhat to help balance and would insist on climbing up and down stairs on her own, she lived about 4-5 more years until she was 20.

Cats are very tuned to emotion and study their environment intently to know what is safe and what might not be. My cats tended to make themselves scarce around football games when I watched on TV. Another would only come sit on my lap when it was raining outside, otherwise he would watch the group from a distance being guard-cat. When he died, another cat took up the guard-cat position.

Just did another sweep of the local sites. Not there. I keep looking, because once she decides to skip town for good (likely soon), she could easily dump them at that point.

And then it would be a lot safer for me to do what needs to be done, because I won't have to worry about being held in contempt or whatever other nonsense she might pull.

140 Here I think the SPCA will let almost anyone adopt, but the private rescues are snooty and give you the 3rd degree.

My local SPCA has long application forms. And for a long time during the Sniffle Scare, face diapers were required even to go in and look at the animals.

Well, he does come and sit by the arm of the sofa and stick his face by the side of mine and purrs and wants to be petted. Maybe he just prefers a lap as opposed to me being stretched out.

143 I'd love to get a friend for Lucy.

Thing is, she hates other cats. Every cat she's ever met, she's greeted with yowls and hisses and outright screaming fights. It's frightening.

She just hate other cats. All of them.

Private rescues are why I had to buy my dogs. Bulldog rescues would not give us the time of day, since neither of us had owned one before. Never mind that we researched breeds, and have the resources for their special needs.

After the care we've given these two, no rescue should ever turn us down again.

All of our cats would sit on our laps, some more than others. But when I was down with the wuhan last winter Scout stayed close to me pretty much all the time, and I think she got sick too (I've heard that felines can get the virus). It really seemed like she was just "being there" for me. Very sweet.

146 About white noise, I used to have a machine but now use an app on my phone. Much cheaper to buy an app and see if it helps.

147 BurtTC, wow. I’ve been sorry to read about all that (I usually lurk, but am aware of the divorce.) I believe you’re in the mental-health profession or something related, and you seem to have a good grasp of the stakes involved. Like some others here, I’ve had to deal with someone with BPD/similar problems. Not a spouse, thankfully, but it’s terrible. Hang in there and, to stay on topic, get a pet of some kind even if you can’t rescue the ex’s.

148 Lucy is undoubtedly fine, nurse. I enjoy hearing about her finkiness.

149 I have an Austin Air filter going in the bedroom. And putting upcurtains has helped as well as putting his beloved crate up in the bedroom. It is just going to take time.

And I would love to get another cat or a senior dog. I don't think either Jake or Fanny could deal with it. Jake gets jealous when I pet her. Fanny is unhappy if she doesn't get attention. I just focus on what I have.

Oh yes - my one female cat did that when I broke an arm and had surgery. From that day until it healed she was always near me and slept on my hip side nearest the break. Her normal spots before and after were on the other side near the feet, or on my chest. Bones set around the plate really well for a 29 year old too, doctor says.

One of my other cats is what I call "the shrink" since whenever anyone, me, or the other cats would be upset he would come in and go nose to nose with whoever was unhappy and look at them with his mild, sympathetic face until things called down.

Thank you for the kind words, I have three cats here now (if my new landlord is here, that's a typo, I meant to say two). They have been a godsend.

Once I get settled in the new location, sell my house here, I'll buy a place there and get at least one more cat. Possibly a dog, but that's tougher without someone who can be home more often. So many cats and dogs out there, needing a good home.

Posted by: BurtTC at November 12, 2022 05:42 PM (XfBY/)

152 139 @burtTC, I am so sorry you are going through this. I divorced a psychopath and it was 3 years of mental torture to get it done. He stole my dog amongst other wonderful acts. I will pray for you, and if you need to vent, find me. I get it.

My oldest has BPD. It’s so hard. Again, prayers.

I did have a cat like that, but it is rarer than people think. There is a certain ceremony with cats to integrate with other cats that involves a variable amount of noise and posturing.

When I got my first Persian, she chased the two boys out of her safe room the first several introductions (they were bigger than her) then when she was let out she chased them out of the upper floor. A little while later she came downstairs to the top of the bookshelves then down to the floor without any scraps with them, and a few days after that they were getting dinner in dishes a few feet apart.

154 151. I’m glad you have the cats!
Duh, I had read the whole conscience conundrum stuff about the landlord; just blanked on it completely. Best wishes on a no-contact, fresh start. I do enjoy (even) your political comments, though pet talk is almost all I can bear here, most days.

For some reason I picture Lucy as pure white. Is she? Miss Linda's last cat, her own cat I mean, Annabelle, was pure white, and hated other cats too.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 12, 2022 06:04 PM (c6xtn)

156 Wolfus,
Lucy is a tuxedo, tortise, brown tabby. She has a white chest and white socks with occasional copper toes. She has brown and Black and Tan and copper stripes with copper splotches.

She was a feral Rescue from the shelter. Wouldn't
Let us pet her for months. Then, when I got cancer, she was MY cat. She sat with me. And purred, for the first time. And she cared.

Now. She's has earned her Fink status.

157 Lulu follow-up.
The chickens were described to me as a new "hobby" for the family, so not a necessarily a significant source of income. Maybe just a source of fresh eggs. Nevertheless, IMO the family had an obligation to secure the chickens against all predators, including their own dog. Since I've had her she's been a fearless critter-chaser (rabbits and squirrels). Hard to believe her former owners weren't aware of it.
