Ancient cat iconography, Egypt

Perfessor Squirrel reminds us that today is National Cat Day. I think there was a Cat Appreciation Day or something similar not long ago.

But anyway, at the link, there is a timeline of cat/human interactions which includes worship of cats by Egyptians 4,000 years ago.

Hi KT,

Just had to send in a picture of a friend's new addition. I'm generally not a fan of designer dogs, but this little guy is just so cute. His name is Jack, and he is a Golden Old English Doodle Dog. He is 1/4 Golden Retriever, 1/4 Old English Sheepdog, and 1/2 Poodle. My friend was told he would only get to about 30 lbs. and we all had a good laugh at that.

Regards,

IrishEi

Old lady spot, she's so old we forgot how long she's been around. She's mean and surly when she has to be but is the queen.

From the desk of "THE LORD PROTECTOR" the BIG "T" . . .

Well, she certainly plays the part of the queen well.

layla in sg.jpg

Long time lurker. Love seeing and reading about all the other pets out there.

This is Layla, a German Shepherd/Rottweiler/Mix my wife and I adopted in the spring of 2018. She is the 1st dog that we adopted together. She sadly passed away last weekend. She was an expert level napper who enjoyed her twice daily walks and observing the neighborhood from our balcony. She thought every adult human she met was her newest best friend and greeted them enthusiastically. Children, particularly infants, she took a keen interest in, always cautious and alertly investigating.

She was mostly indifferent to other dogs, tolerating them when out and about, and barking only when one first shows her aggression. She had a strong prey drive, and would absolutely terrorize any squirrel, rabbit, or other small critter she could sniff out. We both miss her dearly.

What a wonderful dog. What a sad loss. Please visit us again.

I'm not much of a pet person, but while visiting a National Guard armory in Iowa, I saw the display of Dewey, the unit's mascot from the Spanish-American war who served with them in the Philippines. Stuffed animal trophies are one thing, but pets (or unit mascots) are different, and I think most people would prefer not to preserve the memory of their past pets this way.

However, out of all the trinkets and such displayed by the unit from their various deployments, Dewey is the only one I recall. He's still the thing any visitor remembers from the place, so I guess in a way, he's still a mascot, representing the unit to the public. I've never been assigned to the unit, so I don't know what the soldiers/leadership think about him, but I did find this little history article about him for those who want to read his story.

Grimmy

This may not be the only way to remember a treasured animal companion. I know that many in The Horde remember their pets long after they are gone.

But what a remarkable story!

1 Caturday? Every day is caturday.

We had our female cat in for tests two weeks ago, she seems to be doing ok. Can't get her to take the meds they prescribed, but that's alright. I want to see if her symptoms return, then try to "force" the meds on her then. Until then...

19 Beautiful dogs today. And love the old lady cat!

My black kitten Julius is twelve weeks old today! He's a very good, passionate little guy, confident, and a retriever.

However, he was brought to the shelter at one week and was a botttle baby, no mommy to suckle. As a consequence, he does a lot of self suckling which I read is normal, but not to let them obsess with it or make raw places on their skin. Anyone else ever have a kitten that does this?

My cat Rhea will usually sit on me or next to me late nights or in the morning, and is usually in the room as well. When I had a broken arm she slept as close to the arm as she could every day till it healed.

The boys have stations at the doorways and in the halls to make sure nothing sneaks up on me and have certain times they come closer for pets. My most nervous of handling cat is on overwatch from a bookcase top but when the oldest male comes onto the bed to say hello and get pets he will come along and get some too but never on his own. The other male is what I call the psychiatrist because whenever anyone is upset he comes from anywhere to see what he can do to calm everyone down.

45 Four years ago this week, our gorgeous Norwegian Forest Cat went outside one night and never returned in the morning. We combed the neighborhood for days, put up pictures and posters in all the local shops and telephone poles. But we never found her. For years we've wondered what happened. We were haunted by thoughts of her lying injured in a ditch or an alley. Her dying thoughts wondering where were her humans.

Yesterday we got a call from a vets office on the far side of town. She had been brought in and they checked her microchip. They put us on touch with the person who has been keeping her. Her son found her outside a Waffle House way across town and brought her home. Lots of feelz. It's not a happy ending. She was brought to the vet with a massive tumor and will have to be euthanized. But we are so grateful she's been loved and cared for this whole time.

65 BurtTC my cats will not take pills from me, I don't have the skills or the ability to cow them like the vet tech.

Depending on the pill, I either grind them up and put them into the Cat Broth you can get at the store, or grind it well with a dollop of lard and smear it on the cat, depending on how wild the cat is.

From what I hear they tend to grow out of it naturally, though you can try diverting his attention with a treat or use a stress reliever/calmer like Feliway. I had a Persian that overgroomed her belly in the spring which I thought was stress but turned out to be her way of cooling down by sleeping on cool tile flooring. When I tried Feliway one of my other cats had a reaction to it that was very mysterious so I had to give up on that solution.

Sounds like you have the right prescription to watch for damage. You could cover the area with clothes or get a collar if he starts to do damage. I had a wee kitten decades ago who had a bad reaction to the flea collars in use then and had scabs and wounds all around the neck from the irritation and her scratching it. I cut the top off of a gym sock and put it around the neck so that the itch would not lead to her wounding herself anymore, and she looked cute with the red stripes.

My girl Rhea hates the advantage smell and runs around the house when it is put on, and drools like a fountain for a while - pints of it it seems like. She's kind of embarrassed by that since she's usually an elegant cat.

My late cat Gustavus would fight hard but could be bribed by getting a bit of whole milk after to at least come to the tiny bathroom willingly for the combat round rather than have to be chased. I can at least do the pry the mouth open with them feet on the floor and shove the pill down the throat. Had to keep a little carton on hand as he got older and needed meds.

72 You need Vetriscience Composure. They make it for both cats and dogs. It's colustrum with a few other ingredients. My cat has hot spots, possibly from the stress of the move. The vet gave me Composure, liquid valium and a foam to keep the sores clean. I decided not to give her the valium. The Composure helped enough that I got some for the dog too. Cat decided I need to give it to her again and actually asked for some today.

I also bought some manuka honey and silver compound. The sores are healing but she licks new areas so I have to keep at it. The more I unpack, the happier they are.

Kittens are xtra hungry so things might change as it grows up, but some cats do 'help' you along at feeding time. My current set are very quiet, getting to their stations and waiting without comment, using body language and sometimes little dances to get the point across.

74 I looked up a recipe for home-made pill pockets today. I may try making up the dough and wrapping Toby's capsules right away and then keeping in fridge. The other option is I'll have to buy better cheese slices. The store brand are falling apart rather than wrapping nicely around the pills. I looked up the pre-made pill pockets and went "nope, not for the 6 capsules I'm giving him daily" I'd had a mental image of a little pocket that one could put 2-3 capsules in, and not treats with a hole to hold ONE capsule.

I have a cat with hot spots and have used coconut oil topically and more recently vaseline to reduce the damage he does to himself when it itches. The coconut oil is also supposed to be an antiinflammitory when he gets some inside while grooming. Clipping his back claws would help but he's hard to catch, but when he gets itchy he will come by and let be take him up if I am sitting/lying down.

77 I looked up a recipe for home-made pill pockets today.

My cats have tended to break up the pocket and then spit out the pill. They are too large to swallow whole for a cat.

Does Toby like cream cheese? Aldi brand is cheap, as is store brand, and one block should last a week, even with six pills a day. Easy to form around the pill too. Mix it with some peanut butter powder, and you have a cheap pill pocket. Or a tasty spread for graham crackers!

Son would send pics of her reclining on his chest, calling her a PITA.

I was going to say, yes! Big black kitten Stirling, now about 8 months old, has done this or a variation of it at least daily since he was small. (He does it on me. When he was very little he wanted to chew my neck or chest skin, and I stopped that, but now he nuzzles and licks as he kneads.) But you wrote "self-suckling." Never ran across that.

She just came and settled on my lap and is watching the characters appear on the screen.

109 It's been a bad week for one of our pets. My daughter's Quaker parrot kept scratching at an old neck wound and he reopened it. We took him to the vet and had them clean and bandage the wound; he also gave us antibiotics and painkillers. Whoever completed the label for the antibiotics got the info wrong and put 10X the dose; fortunately, he puked it up and we called the vet (again). He seems to be doing ok, but I swear I've shot pheasant with a 12 ga that had less gnarly wounds. Hope the little guy heals up once and for all.

110 The peculiar thing about Stirling's nuzzle-and-knead behavior is that he is not a shy or fearful cat in need of obvious comfort. Just recently, I'm having some issue with the storebrand slices I bought wanting to fall apart rather than wrapping around the pill and sticking to itself nicely. When the cheese sticks well most dogs take pills well this way.

I don't want want to handle liver sausage twice a
