The evening before we brought Bailey home. Her owner was unable to keep her so, we made the trip to enemy territory, AKA CA, and brought her home.
Sweet pooch, but, needs some work on the leash, though, she seems to be most of the way there. Unreal amount of energy, mostly due to her being just about 2 years old.
Also, very much the lap dog, if given half a chance. Usual traits of a Golden Retriever: playful and sweet.

Hi! I'm a long-time lurker. You can call me Southern_Grace (my Disqus ID). Love to peruse the site for the tons of salty information but have never commented. The Saturday Pet Thread may be my fave feature on this site. Been meaning to share a pic of my sweeties for a while now. Dixie is the little brown dachshund, age 6. She has a typical doxie personality and works on keeping the others in line. Penny is the beagle, age 4. Her baying is music to my ears, and my neighbors seem to be good sports about it. And Dolly the basset hound is the baby--her 3rd birthday is coming up in a couple of months. Their love and affection helps keep me steady and grounded. They are very cuddly and love their long walks and social outings at our local dog park. They are very friendly and loving to all, including children and other dogs, and have nicely filled up my empty nest. Hounds are the best, IMO!
Please keep up the cheerful, uplifting work--we need it more than ever during these dark times. Thank you!

4 Had a bit of a scare this week, with the female cat at the vet. We were prepared to put her to sleep, but all her tests came back great! So she's being awfully haughty, I don't know how well she understands how close she came to the hangman.

11 Among the other turmoils here, I need to downsize (temporarily) our homestead, and rentals that allow cats often say "maximum of two." So... what if I can't find a place that is accepting of three cats?

24 Afternoon, all! A big shout-out to the folks at Corsicana this weekend, and to whatever four-legged companions you brought along!

Stirling the big black kitten, and Dagny the little brown tabby Siberian kitten, are getting along. Each night this week Miss Linda brought Dagny over for about 2 hours and we supervised their play. Bit by bit the two have gotten used to each other and have picked out their favorite spots to sleep. Last night Dagny stayed over, and there were no ructions or emergency vet runs, so I think the worst may be over.

Stirling still throws himself on me in the morning and nurses and kneads. Dagny is really sort of aloof; friendly enough, in a sort of "Of course I remember you, and how's Ed?" way, but not a lap cat yet.

28 Niece on her way back from Guatemala with two cats (with my brother accompanying). He says his hands will heal (one cat nailed him as the carrier was going through X-ray.

Cats are not very good travelers. The smaller cat keeps rubbing her nose on the carrier.

30 BurtTC, I've never told my apartment clowns that I have a cat at all, let alone 2. I was trying to save the $150 deposit. And nowadays a lot of places have latched on to the new extortion dodge, "pet rent." If they are not going to check on you -- ask your future neighbors if they do -- tell them about the first 2 and pay the deposit, and then don't tell them about the 3rd. They'd lie to you if it suited their purposes.

I know, not a very upstanding way to be, but such is the world we live in now.

He will sprawl out on the dash and watch the world go by, or cuddle around my neck and purr.
A travel litter box is useful for extended trips.
I've driven across country with cats.

34 Good to see all the cool pet photos today.

On the homefront, the feral kittens I was ranching out back are growing at an astonishing rate. The feral mother who brought them into my backyard beginning of last June has, of course, ditched the litter after about 2 months or so. The only way I could see to get the local shelter to pay for spaying/neutering/vacc was to turn the kittens over but I don't like what happens to them mentally when they end up in the shelter.

OTOH, as I found out to my chagrin, it's pretty damned costly to do it myself. Either way, the deed's done and all four are spayed/neutered. So, the gang consists of one orange tabby male, one pure-black female, one tortoiseshell female (just like her mother) and one grey tortoiseshell (or calico) female. And they're quite the rambunctious crew.

I was going to write, "I've never gone across country with a cat." But that's not true. The late smart black cat Marie-Antoinette traveled with me from Denver back to Da Swamp in late '01. She trotted right into her carrier and did not cry (which surprised me, as she was talkative under normal circumstances) as we drove. An excellent companion.

Stirling and Dagny both hop right into their carriers without fuss.

Plus, Burt, if any or all of your 3 are of the type who vanishes when strangers come over, the management may never know even if they do an inspection. There will be a litter box, yes, and food bowls, but you've told them about the "legal" 2, and I doubt most harried managers are going to investigate further.

40 Orea would travel happily from the Charleston area to Baltimore and back on I-95 with never an issue.

Travel litter box, in flight attendant with food, snacks and water. And her own private cabin (Crate).

I wish I could travel like that.

It is a horribly hard thing to do and really difficult to consider another one after doing this a few times.

That's usually how it goes down, once everyone learns that they aren't going to be shoved out or lose what they had. Then there's some jostling for favorite spots or working out what playtime games are too rough

I've also found that new cats may yield laptime to other cats and find other times and places. When I had two girl cats the elder slept on my side or legs in bed, when she died the second cat took up that spot instantly so she must have wanted to do so before.

I did same for Boston to LA in 3.5 days, stayed in Hotels. If you look for places a cat can hide under the bed was no problem. I'd get in, set up litter and give them dinner, then go and have a relaxed dinner myself if a restaurant was nearby and by the time I was in watching TV everyone was relaxed and chill. I didn't push the drive time because my cats would not use a litterbox in a quick stop so 9-10 hours was a limit.

My trip with her, though, was in my sedan. I didn't think it a good idea to load Arizona, who was 14 and had never traveled well, into a carrier and drive all day for 3 days in a Ryder rental truck. I left him with Miss LInda and she flew up with him a month or so later.

She found a slot between the headboard and the "box" supporting the bed itself that was cozy but I couldn't reach so I had to drive her out of there before she found something worse. After than I jammed up that space with pillows.

I do the same for introducing cats to a new house - there can be places where they can seem to hide, but not too well like under beds or behind furniture.

Those moths lay eggs at the base of the plant, and their larva bore-into the zucchini stem.

Nah, it's a butterfly - Small White, Cabbage White, Cabbage Butterfly, etc. But it is AKA the Cabbage Moth.

Confusingly, there is also a Cabbage Moth that is really a moth. Plus the Cabbage Looper, also a moth.

If it eats your zucchini plants, it is probably one of the moths, not the butterflies, which pretty much restrict themselves to members of the cabbage and mustard families.
