Meet The PetMorons

Allie-02.JPG

Hello,

I swore I would never, ever get a fourth cat for my household. Never in a million years. Well, I guess I went to sleep for a million and one years, because I broke my vow this past weekend.

The sister of one of my former coworkers suffered a stroke, leaving her incapable of taking care of her 5-year-old cat (named "Ally," though I've changed the spelling to "Allie"). My coworker friend was desperate to find Allie a home after being turned down by several other cat owners.

I just happen to have a sunroom on the back of my house that is perfect for cats. It's a great little catio that has plenty of windows and ventilation, afternoon sunshine, cat trees, and a couch. My other cats love it. Plus, Allie can spend her initial time there while she adjusts to her new environment.

She's been doing OK, though she's not terribly keen on interacting with Penny, Jasmine, and Kaylee. They've been very chill about the whole experience. Allie does let me pet her sometimes, but she also growls sometimes when I do. Not sure what that means. She also has this amusing quirk of dropping her cat toys in her full water dish.

I think Allie will adapt. It will just take time and patience. I'm sure she misses her former owner. But I hope I can give Allie a good home.

I'm attaching a photo of Allie surveying her new domain from on top of a cat tree.

Best regards,

"Perfessor" Squirrel -- Certified Crazy Cat Dude

I kinda suspected that "Perfessor" Squirrel would turn out to have a soft spot for critters.

Molly was around four or five years old when we welcomed her into our family in 2014. The people at the pound said she was a shepherd/husky mix. Normally, our pound keeps animals for two weeks, and then euthanizes them if no one claims them. But they kept Molly past that date because she was so gentle and friendly, and they wanted to place her with a family. We were that lucky family.

Molly rarely barked, and never whined or complained about anything. Her greatest joys were a daily walk and handouts at the dinner table. She was the best of companions and a comfort in our times of stress and worry. We were forced to say goodbye to Molly last week, as hip problems and a sudden intestinal problem proved to be too much. If there are dogs in heaven, then Molly surely will be there. And as Will Rogers said, "If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went."

Thank you.

R. Wilson

Thank you for sharing your photo and remembrances of your wonderful dog. How you must miss Molly.

I am speechless before the cute.

Bella and Nola.JPG

This is Bella and Nola. These two have been best buddies since Bella (chocolate lab) was a puppy while my wife and I were hand raising Nola.

Nola is a green cheek conure and hostaed in December of 2020 with a birth defect known as splay legs. We had to take him to an avian specialist in New Orleans (hence his name) every week for 6 weeks to treat this condition. Bella sensed there was something amiss with this bird, we have others, and became very attentive and protective.

Nola has been fully rehabbed and these two play together all the time.

Regards

Elmonk

What a wonderful story!

Dottie.jpg

From Jewells:

This is Dottie. We aren't sure what kind of mix she is but she's sure a pretty girl. She's 9 years old. The day after Russell brought her to Shep's she jumped the fence. Many volunteers went out searching for her to no avail. Russell was heartsick. She was gone all night. The next morning she showed up back at Shep's! So..she has to be harnessed when we take her out. She's super lovable and I doubt she will be with us for very long.

Great work you're doing there, Jewells!

11 Sorry about Betsy, R. Wilson. Looks like a nice, nice dog and companion. Lilo is adorable, and I like your cat, Allie, "Perfesser". It was good of you to take her in after her owner had a stroke. Bella and Nola look adorable together, and it sounds like Dottie is an energetic dog. Glad she came back, though.

Right now, we have two guests and everyone is sleeping peacefully. Soon to change because dinner is in fifteen minutes.

30 Saturday here at the Pet Park thread. Always a treat.

Daisy the madcap Malinois continues to teach Milady and me how to adjust to her. She's learning not to chew our stuff, just her stuff. That's important.

Ony, the old black cat, has gradually been adjusting to dog in the house. They aren't exactly friends, yet. Mainly, Daisy has to learn that you don't play with cats the way she plays with her dog friends. Meanwhile, Ony keeps her at bay with a really fierce hiss-and-spit routine = you may come this close, but no closer.

32 Bengal Cat help for Black Orchid.
Yes, another kitty will help your cat. I would get a female if you have a male cat. Be forewarned that sometimes they will not get along unless you got two bengals at the same time.
Clicker training is helpful. Just playing with them at least twice a day for 20 minutes helps. Cats like schedules too.
I used dry food or treats in these dog puzzles.

These are good for dogs too. Some of these things will be more difficult with dogs in the same room. Any dog treat puzzle the cats will like.

I've used cat fishing poles and DaBird toy, also they love nerf guns that shoot things. It's a way to play with them and watch a movie at the same time.
Your dogs may eat the cat toys. YMMV
Cat wheel. Do a search and yes the bengal will use it. Regular kitty you'd probably have to start as a kitten.

36 Perfesseor -- Years ago, the XO forcefully explained to our kids that if he passed away before me, they would have to keep me from becoming the Crazy Cat Lady of South O. It would have killed me to pass up a cat like Allie. (Actually, I did adopt a third bookstore cat when a friend passed away.) You did a good thing, and I'm sure Allie will soon blend in. There might be a few disagreements along the way, but one day you will notice the battle is being fought without claws and all parties are enjoying themselves.

Be grateful that all she is doing is drowning her toys. My Persian takes a mouthful of kibble out of his dish, spits the kibble out onto the floor, finds the perfect nugget, then repeats the entire process several times, resulting in a floor covered with kibble. I've tried an 8" x 8" baking tin, thinking maybe a small dish irritated his whiskers. Nope. He just keeps spitting the kibble out to find the perfect nugget. I had to move his food dish out of the kitchen because it was too hard to cook while crunching kibble with every step. Cats.

Cats need vertical space, especially if you have dogs. A high shelf where they can feel safe and watch everything is important.
If your cat is scratching your furniture double sided tape (my cats were attracted to the tape). Chewing things, bitter apple dog spray.

40 I wouldn't take the growl too personal especially if she isn't tensing up while you do it. That can be just an 'i'm nervous so don't mess with me" warning to any other cat listening rather than directed at you.

My shorter nosed cats do the "bulldozer" with kibble. They push it out the back of the dish trying to get their mouth around it so that piles up behind the plate. The other cats pick some of it up later but it wastes food if I don't pick it up.

53 47 -- My GSD would take a mouthful of kibble from her bowl in the kitchen and spit it out on the dining room floor. At least she ate all of it before she went back for more. All I could figure was that the dining room was where people ate, so she should eat there, too. Thankfully, she never went so far to take her food to the front room because the kids ate most meals in front of the tv.

61 I have a question for the other dog owners. I have some friends (older couple) who got a black mouthed cur puppy last year. It is almost a year old now. I just got back from a party that this dog was at, with scratches down my back from when it first "greeted" me and a bad bleeding gouge on my arm from that dog's claws when it was "saying goodbye". Do these dogs ever calm down?
