Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Let's enjoy the world of animals and leave the world of politics outside today.

Would you like a cookie?

Dog Cookies

Hi;

I found this easy recipe for my dogs.

It's a pictorial.

Meet The PetMorons

smuggee2.jpg

After we lost our Flat-Coated Retriever Fenway several weeks ago, we went and adopted a kitten from a rescue so our resident cat would have a playmate. Meet Smudge. We believe she has some (a lot?) of Maine Coon in her. The second photo is our first cat Dini (left) showing Smudge (right) the ins-and-outs of begging before the refrigerator gods. Smudge is about 4 months old now and is keeping house OCiS, including Dini, on our toes. She is a rabble rouser and not afraid to tangle with Dini.

The other night she was playing with some type of ping pong ball on the hard wood stairs. I still haven't figured out how she would get it back to the top of the stairs, but she would bat it down and chase it as it bounced off each step. Then back to the top, rinse and repeat.

Our Country is Screwed

Looks like she brightens the household!

Hey, K.T.! This is my cockatiel Tyson, so named because he is a total jerk and I have been threatening to make him into a chicken dinner since I got him as a baby 20+ years ago. We got him from a friend of my dad's who raised cockatiels. He has unusual coloring with no yellow or orange typically found in cockatiels.

He's a funny guy, if he doesn't get covered up by about 8:00 pm (bedtime) he starts whistling super loud until someone does it. Then he chitters to himself for a bit and goes to sleep. He also loves to hear sirens, crickets, and other birds on the TV, so we leave it on for him during the day while we're at work.

Thank you for all you do!

I'm a dispatcher for a freight broker/consolidator in Indianaplois. One of our drivers picked up a load late in the day and dropped it in one of our doors overnight. When the dock guy opened the door to unload this cat jumped out of the trailer and hid in the warehouse for two weeks. We hsve no idea how he got into the trailer. Evaded all attempts to catch him. Then one morning he just walked up to the boss like, "OK, you can feed me now." About 15 months old, no chip, very independent. He works in the warehouse at night and the office by day.

Long time reader, rare commentator.

Faffnir Draken

What a distinguished cat!

9 Jake--

I have been making that same dog biscuit recipe for our Luna for months. She loves it! Very easy but as the comments recommend, be sure to let the biscuits fully cool and dry before putting them in a container or they will mold.

But with two doggehs to consume them, I'll bet they don't last long enough for that.

10 Jordan - love your cockatiel! They make great pets - at least my wife certainly thinks so, she had one for many years growing up and, to her, they were so loyal and loving.

11 I like how the little cockatiel is sandwiched between two pictures containing three cats.

I have no doubt if all of these animals were in the same room, the kitties would be endlessly fascinated by the little birdie...

13 Knew a gal with two cockatiels, Nigel and Baby Lucky. Lucky was kinda retarded and would follow Nigel everywhere saying "high Nigel", bugging him to no end. Smallest member of the cockatoo family, so less evil.

19 Tweety Bird n' Sylvester the Cat. Some of the finest cartoonery ever set forth on acetate.

That cockatoo reminds me of when Granny is whackin' ol' Sylvester on the back with her umbrella, until he spits out the wee yellow bird. He kind of has that same ( ! ) look on his face, there! lol

Is Paisely a dog or cat? Sounds like a cat, because my wife's dog loved her cockatiel - the bird used to land on her back and just sit there...

22 Kitties love to look at birdies.

Ferals here walk past screen door, look up at psciticene phelbotomist and pause with fascination. And evil intent.

They are so pitiful on a hot day, spatchcocked in the shade trying to shed body heat.

23 In my own household, my newest acquisition, Allie the Cat, is slowly getting used to being in a house with three other cats.

She came inside from the sunroom today and explored my house. Now she's hiding under my couch, but she'll come out to explore some more.

To their credit my other kitties are adjusting quite well. Minimal growling and hissing, especially from Penny, who is extremely territorial.

24 I could see making a batch of those treats and sharing them 50/50 with the doggo, especially on a hike.

25 We had a cockatiel growing up. He was a hatchling when his mother died, so he was hand raised. Whistled all kids of things, but his rendition of the Adam's family theme was a hoot, including lifting up one claw during the finger snapping part...
Also had a bad habit of masturbating on his food dish...

28 Wow - Paisley has an issue with birds, I guess. Charlie, my Cockapoo, has issues with bugs - he hates them for some reason and goes nuts if he sees one, or we tell him to get the "buggy"...I think most dogs just ignore them.

My brother bought cheese snacks from a local grocery store that he said were great; had white cheddar in them. His dog looked longingly, wanting some.

One day he offered some to a coworker who politely refused.

Eventually, he found out they were dog treats. When he emailed the company, they wrote back, "We're glad you found a snack you can share with your pets".

30 I know most of you are not on Facebook. But there is a new group, "Dogs With Seizures -support and help" that is very good. It's non traditional treatments. The woman that started it had to out down a young dog with cluster seizures. But her other dog has gone 10 months without a seizure. She felt that people weren't getting enough encouragement to try alternatives on the other groups.

I was surprised at how quickly Dini adapted to having a new kitten (Smudge) in the house. No hissing, some growling but they quickly became best buds. Dini is on the submissive side so there really hasn't been any territorial battles.

35 Adding Smudge to the household helped brighten the house after losing Fenway our Flatcoat Retriever.

I hope everyone who has ever had dogs gets to experience that one special dog who really bonds with you. There is nothing like the bond and the journey together. It is worth all the pain, sorrow and emptiness at the end.

Grass helps chop up hairballs in the stomach to either help them pass or to induce vomiting if they dont. You can buy grass in a pot for cats which might keep them from wanting to go get it. When I did, though, they pulled the whole plant out of the little pot and killed it.

41 I am petless so I love to see the pics on the Pet Thread. I had to put my beloved Sophie to sleep in January due to cancer and I sit in my car when I get home from work each day because there's no point in going in the house. If I can get a new and remote job, I can rectify this dreadful situation.

I can absolutely vouch for pumpkin being extremely popular with dogs and kitties. I used to always drop a big dollop of pumpkin on Sophie's kibble but the king of the pumpkin fiends was Mr. Perfect, a delightful orange tabby who would jump up on his eating place every day and whine at me until he got his kibble with pumpkin. And if it was a day where a new can had to be opened, i.e., there was a delay in service, spectacular whining ensued. Mr. Perfect was a great kitty, maybe the best one I ever had.

42 I used to make dog treats using a recipe with a can of dog food and some garbanzo bean flour. Stunk up the house something fierce but the dogs loved them. They also ate whatever food Tyson flung out of his dish so their poops always had bird seed in them.

46 Again, I am sorry about Fenway, Our Country is Screwed, but I am glad your cat has a playmate and that Kitten is adorable.
Your cockatiel sounds like quite a character, Jordan. Finn looks like a good dog and the grey cat who hitched a ride is very handsome.

Our black cat, Pynchon, (named after the novelist, Thomas Pynchon) will be missing his human older brother who is now at college. FenSon will be missing the cat. He is very good with him and gets down on his level on the floor and the cat is more vocal with him than he is with either of us.

I have never heard of cat cookies. Does such a thing exist?

61 We had a parrot named Sam once (maybe named after Son of Sam, as he would get this look and his eyes would quickly dialate and contract over and over). He would often scream, and my Dad would say, "Shut up Stupid!".
One day my Mom was repeating to him, over and over, "I Love you Jesus".
Sam said, "Shut up, Stupid!"
Wasn't long after that he was gone. Sold to a bird store. Later found out he was bought by a guy who cursed at him in Spanish, only to be cursed right back even worse. Sam had a secret vocabulary he never used around us...

63 Afternoon, all,

Yes, Smudge does look like he has a lot of Coon in his genetic tanks. I suspect that she carries the ball up the stairs in her mouth, sets it down, then bats it down the steps. When we lived in a town house, Arizona the red tabby and I had a similar game involving crumpled typing paper. He'd sit at the top of the stairs, me at the bottom, and I would bat the ball of paper up toward him. If it landed above midway, he had to come down and swat it back to me. If it landed below that, it was my job to climb up and bat it up again.

Sometimes it would land in his territory and he didn't move. I'd say, "You can do better than that," and he'd rise, pad downward, and swat the paper back to me.

66 It is absolutely delightful on the patio this afternoon Theres breeze and the temp is aboht mid 80s. The dogs are posted by the fence keeping the walkers in the hood at bay, except Hercules. He's chillaxin on the sofa surveying his domain and watching the humming birds on the Jasmine.

Fish maw is neither of those...it's the swim bladder.

68 As far as Stirling the Evil Black Kitten of War and Pestilence: I have wide packing tape. I plan to fold it double and spread it along the lower edge and maybe the sides of the couch, so his paws will encounter the sticky stuff. I'll do the same for the TV stand. In theory this should deter him from scratching the couch or leaping up to pull the TV over.

In theory the Titanic was unsinkable, too.

I've tended to redirect to a scratcher - there's a 4 foot model around with sisal which is good because even big cats can stretch, and little ones climb it like a tree. I got a dense foam pad for the kitchen years back and one of my cats who is a 'ground scratcher' uses that to claw at and make flap up and smack back down.

79 The pic of the dog with his head on his human's lap with the caption, "Tell me the story of how you rescued me again," is so cool.

So is the story of the big gray cat who moved into the warehouse and one day strolled up and became a working cat. My late mother's last cat, L'il Bit, was like that. Mom had died at the hospital and I had to rescue the lady cat -- especially since I'd brought her home 12 years before. I trapped her and brought her to my place. She hid under the bed for 2-3 weeks, coming out only for food and the litter box. Then, on Christmas morning, with no hesitation, she trotted out and leaped into my lap. 'Twas as if she decided, "I'll have to get over this sometime. Why not now?"

My older son's cat (black cat, chose son at humane society) had a bad habit of stealing human food. I had some chicken on to top of the stove, and undoubtedly it was he who got into it, but set it up to look like the other cat did it. He was and is a crafty little bastard, but now lives with my son.

I know. That's why I really did not want a kitten, more an older cat, say 1-3 years old. He's only a little over 5 months. Maybe his battery disconnection, prob. next month, will help. I doubt it.

But as I said, a rescue cat. We went to pick up a kitten, and he happened to be in the same room. The lady there said he had been hiding the entire time he'd been there (over a week), only coming out for food, water, and litter. My older son went in the room and sat down, he immediately came out of the hole he was hiding in and jumped on his lap; he had chosen my son.

I tried that once with a kitten who was a bit too energetic for my 18 year old lady cat. He decided to drink from the stream. I had to have a bottle around for the next 17 years for him as a special treat - he'd open wide and let me squirt right in the mouth.
