The Morning Report – Tuesday July 12, 2022

The incomparable J.J. Sefton is working on his cross-country move (I think today is just about when he realizes he needs a lot more boxes, but he also realizes there is no place to put any more boxes) so with me pinch-hitting you get another opportunity to appreciate just how amazing his morning link-foo is.

I wanted to post a link to an update on the Supreme Court leaker, but I can’t find one - that story seems to have died. Here is what I am starting to think, and it may sound a little tinfoil-hat-ish, but nothing would surprise me about the corruption of our government. I believe that all the Supreme Court justices know exactly who the leaker is, but they have been instructed to remain silent during “the investigation.” If the name of the leaker is leaked, that would suddenly be the scandal that interests the media, because a (presumably conservative) justice or his staff had “interfered with an investigation.” If the leak of the leaker’s name were tied to a conservative justice, there would be howls for impeachment, because our “our democracy is at stake.”

On to some links:

Governor Greg Abbot’s awful stewardship of Texas energy is starting to approach dereliction of duty.

Millions Of Texans Could Lose Power In Rolling Blackouts Amid Record Heat [Forbes – 7/11/2022]

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas asked residents and businesses to voluntarily turn up the thermostat and conserve energy from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday to help preserve the power grid. ERCOT said no system-wide outages are expected, but did warn of potential rolling blackouts for its more than 26 million customers.

I know it’s a coincidence, but I am going to pretend that the great Victor Davis Hanson (who is known to occasionally lurk here at Ace of Spades) might have been inspired to write the piece linked below after reading my piece, Is Europe Heading Toward A ‘Versailles 1789’ Moment? which was posted here at AOS on July 8.

Our New Antoinettes [American Greatness – 7/10/2022]

Marie Antoinette, the beheaded wife of the beheaded French Bourbon King Charles Louis XVI, did not really say “Let them cake.” But in the short time that the French Revolution became utterly unhinged, toxic, and nihilistic, she became nonetheless iconic as an out-of-touch elite who had lived in a make-believe world at Versailles, without a clue (or care?) about the ordeal of the masses.

This story is a couple weeks old, but with California’s ban on travel to “anti-LGBT states” in the news, I’m wondering if California restricts travel to Japan.

Japan court says ban on same-sex marriage is constitutional [NPR – 6/20/2022]

A Japanese court ruled Monday that the country's ban on same-sex marriage does not violate the constitution, and rejected demands for compensation by three couples who said their right to free union and equality has been violated.

*****

It’s safe to say that no polite Republican would ever dare to impeach a Democrat Attorney General, just because he refused to enforce the law against terrorists trying to murder a conservative Supreme Court Justice.

A.G. Merrick Garland May Face Impeachment over Abortion Protests at Justices’ Homes Should GOP Take House

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland could face impeachment proceedings over the Department of Justice’s failure to enforce a federal statute that prevents picketing or parading outside of Supreme Court Justices’ homes, should Republicans take the majority in the House of Representatives in the midterm elections.

Our Navy seems a little distracted. Perhaps we should spend more time teaching the sailors how to keep planes from falling off carriers, and less time training them on the pain inflicted by misgendering.

19 Interestingly enough, Truman was plagued with an economy suffering high monetary inflation induced prices post war. "Meat shortages" (and high prices) were a campaign issue.

Also interesting, it is almost inconceivable that the White House would not have switched to Republican control after four (4) consecutive terms with a Democrat, even a beloved figure like FDR.

"Dewey defeats Truman" said the headlines. Anyone ever make a deep dive into any jiggery-pokery in the '48 election? Would not surprise me. Americans would have made a switch, just on historical patterns alone.

But Norma Shearer was such a likeable Marie Antoinette! Kidding aside, this encapsulates not only Europe, but America now...more than ever. They all live in a make-believe world where everything they want is aplenty. They are awash in wealth, expensive dinner parties, mansions, privileges and have removed the pain of their own policies by purposefully exempting themselves from their laws for the peasants. It will now start to really amplify as they turn the vice grip on food production and energy in order to institute their global warming scam. It's already happening and it's breathtaking to witness. My wish is that they pay a very heavy price for their arrogance.

35 Governor Greg Abbot’s awful stewardship of Texas energy is starting to approach dereliction of duty.

I am not a fan of Son of Santa Anna, especially over his reaction to the C19 scam allowing the cities and counties to run roughshod over our Rights. That has been litigated here many times.

The real problem with the grid is FERC, George W and Rick Perry (who ironically became Energy Secretary under Trump). The Texas governor ship is a weak one and Congress ultimately is responsible, but the encouraging and advancing the construction of unreliables, changing the laws to cripple ERCOTs ability to manage, not implementing a capacity market, and letting cities like Dallas, Austin and Houston side with the EPA to bully the energy producers and legislators into shutting down the coal power plants.

There is a lot of people to blame for destroying a reliable and inexpensive power grid. ERCOT's mismanagement and corruption of it, and their indifference to the plight of rate payers is largely a reason I moved out of ERCOT and into SPP (yet stay in Texas).

While I am second to none in my disdain for the concept of "industrial scale" "renewable" energy, I believe this move was started under Perry. Frankly, with the inability to build nuclear and with Obama promising to bankrupt any company which used fossil fuels, beginning with coal, it seemed like a "reasonable" test bed.

Texas gets lots of sun. Whoever sold them on wind, however, was a charlatan. When it gets really hot, the wind stops blowing.

Now, having discovered that the great Gaia energy panacea is a lie, you must recover from that. Doing so is not immediate. While it's fun to dump on Abbott, is it true that no actions are being taken to address the situation in a reliable manner? I honestly don't know the answer to that.

73 @Nova local, ERCOT is owned by the member utilities. Utilities make money by getting a return on capital. Renewables require much bigger capital investment per kWh than non-renewables, hence the utilities make more money. ERCOT, being owned by the members, is generally OK with that. There was sweet tax credit money available from Uncle Sugar. The Public Utilities Commission is supposed to look out for the public. It was asleep at the switch in its duty to promote reliability and affordability. That has hopefully been fixed, but that misallocation of capital is going to take many years to realign.

I'll keep saying it - their idea of forced scarcity wasn't to fail everything. They thought a little nudge was all that was needed, and the markets and masses would innovate and figure it out. Because they are absolutely and completely clueless about how all this works.

You can thank your Fe'ral Government for the inescapable transformation to third word energy.

EPA declared by fiat that states must be under a particular PM2.5 and PM10 level, and the communist mayors of the Texas' blue cities demanded many coal plants shut because they claimed that smoke from those plants would somehow effect the city's rating - so the plants had to shut down.

Then the Fe'rals offered tons of money and advantages to unreliable energy sources that displaced reliable thermals. They took tax dollars and made wind/solar cheaper, removed any requirement for reliability, and priced the thermals out via auction market and "carbon credits".

ESG scoring systems, Carbon Credits, arbitrary EPA demands, propaganda campaigns, corrupt politicians, profoundly stupid public, NIMBY and lack of water (to cool the thermals) all add up to where we are.

That reminds me of a story from the Alfred Hitchcock picture Lifeboat, one of whose stars was omnisexual Tallulah Bankhead.

In order to reach the 'lifeboat,' actors were required to climb a long ladder attached to the side of a water tank. Bankhead, as was her custom, didn't wear underwear, and so, as you can imagine, the crowd gathered around the tank to watch her ascend grew larger and larger every day.

At last, a producer asked Hitch to deal with the situation. He replied, "I would like to, but I don't know which department I should consult - costumes or hairdressing."

Meanwhile, while this spending has made those power sources one fifth of the stated power generation capacity, over the past week, and also during the freeze, wind has only provided about 2% of the power generated. Natural gas has boosted to provide the difference with reliable power.

It's possible. Just like how it's possible that most people think the country is sliding down into disaster but the hypothetical contest margins are razor thin. It doesn't make sense, but it's fairly easy to understand.

"I hate Joe Biden. I think Joe Biden is a bad president and that this country is on the wrong track. Life is hard under Joe Biden. Joe Biden is not a good choice for the office. Despite all of this, if the contest is Joe Biden vs. Donald Trump, I will vote for Biden anyway. No matter how bad Joe is, Trump is unconscionable and if being rid Trump means we have to make do with a bad choice, then so be it."

Those people are out there. Are there enough of them to make those poll results reasonable? I dunno. Probably not. But they are out there, and there aren't just a few of them.

If I ever have to move again (here's hoping not - I chose my current place based on long-term planning), I will do the plastic tub thing for a lot of it. They're expensive, but they also have resale value and are very sturdy. I'll have some (let's face it - I'll have many) cardboard boxes, too, but the tubs are going to make a significant showing. The right ones also stack really well and strongly. I can see a ton of benefits to using them. The downside, of course, is the bill.

There are three things wrong with the entire story:
1. The timing was impeccable
2. There was no evidence provided beyond the story itself
3. A pregnant 10 year-old is, with virtual certainty, evidence of a heinous crime and abortion questions are quite secondary - yet nobody in the political or press spheres discussed that fairly important angle

If the story was true, it's a serious criminal problem that they ignored and if the story was false, they were spreading rumors and fake news to make a political point. In either case, they are using an abused little girl - real or imagined - as a political football. There is no way for this story to end well for those who spread it.

And why can't we blame the "conservative" and libertarian Mayor Dale Ross of the city of Georgetown Texas, who became a media darling:

And then after signing a thirty year deal to get power from a solar energy provider, pledged to make the city 100% unreliable the following year.

Now Georgetown has the most expensive and least reliable energy because boasting 100% renewables is a bet the mayor wanted to take with other people's lives.

Not an acceptable answer. They don't have to disclose her name to pound the table about it. "That this young girl had to travel to another state to receive an abortion is a serious problem caused by the Supreme Court's destruction of precedent in a bold and political escalation and that has to be dealt with and we are proposing {law X} to handle this problem, but we also call on the Ohio State Police to investigate this matter thoroughly to make sure that the sexual predator is identified and prosecuted."

I disagree. The pain from "misgendering" may very well be real to the person experiencing it. That doesn't make the pain rational, and it doesn't mean that normal people should be constrained to prevent the irrational and mentally-ill person any psychological pain, but they may well feel it.

And the answer is not to amplify and support their mental illness, but to help them seek treatment if they wish to.

And of course, a Special Address by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine

The American contingent will include 25 politicians and Biden Administration officials. US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo will join Climate Czar John Kerry as the White House representatives there. They will be joined by 12 democrat and 10 republican politicians, including 7 senators and two state governors

I'm not familiar with some of the names but the Rs include Darrell Issa from CA and another asshoe from TX.

Prayers please for "T" 19-year-old daughter of my wife's best friend, who my wife helped raise when she was quite a bit younger.

She hung herself yesterday evening. Unfortunately it was not a clean kill and she is in the ICU with the gravest of anoxic brain injuries. They are trying a salvage resuscitation to see if she'll be eligible for organ donation.

T was a very sweet young lady. She was yet another victim of pedo rape at a very young age, and lived the rest of her short life broken.

317 Despite all of this, if the contest is Joe Biden vs. Donald Trump, I will vote for Biden anyway.

Reagan pulled 52% against Carter's 41.5%. Anderson took the remaining 6.5%, and I've always thought most of that came from Carter voters.

So even back then, when everyone was supposedly so much more saner and America was just generally better, about 45% of the country said "Hell yeah, give us four more of Jimmy". Folks, we have a real good understanding here of why people should hate Democrats. And a real case of denial regarding how bad they hate Republicans.

"Come to college and go mad" is a reality for far too many people and colleges have rather a lot to answer for. A lot of what's wrong in the world today started in the minds of ivy-covered professors in ivy-covered halls.

Any reasonably advanced civilization needs universities, just as any reasonably advanced economies needs banks. It does not mean we need *these* universities (or these banks, for that matter).

Listen, this is patently unfair. We advise and offer theoretical solutions to problems. Anyone who takes our advice is a free agent. We did not cause this "mess," nor are we "up to our eyeballs" in it. We offered advice to the Sri Lankan government, advice that government partially implemented. The problems in Sri Lanka are not due to the advice, but to its implementation and secondary factors within the political reality of that country. We have zero culpability for any problems there.

We have removed the content from our sites only because the incomplete and poorly-executed implementation of general, broad-spectrum advice will serve as a distraction from our core mission of advancing the economic and human conditions worldwide. This is a side show caused by local incompetence and we want to maintain focus on our primary goals.

For DECADES now the Legislature and others have been hot and horny for wind energy. Never mind in recent days, when needed most, it only hit 3% of peak performance because, well, when high pressure systems settle over the state, the wind don’t blow. Surprise. More…

“The Iranian government is preparing to provide Russia with up to several hundred UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), including weapons-capable UAVs, on an expedited timeline,” Sullivan told reporters.

Yeah it's amazing. They put up windmills without considering high pressure domes in summer tend to stay put for extended periods, produce little wind and scads of heat, and low pressure systems in winter make lots of wind (often too much), until they don't, but also scads of ice and cold.

So just when your load spikes the windmills aren't there, and as windmills aren't reliable enough for base load you basically need 100% back up capacity for every windmill put into service.

Graft and Incompetence are killing words.

There's not going to be too much guerilla stuff in the areas Russia is looking to take and Ukraine isn't being provided equipment needed to breakthrough(tanks needed mostly). Lots of briefly trained infantry(which is what Ukraine has) can slow things down a lot or be a real hassle if Russia went into urban areas, but the Russians are just shelling them. If the Ukrainians can take out the tanks with hand held missiles, that's step one. They then blow up every stinking road and bridge leading back to Russia and let the remaining Ruskies starve to death or search for food in the rubble of the buildings they shot up.

The Ukrainians aren't going to be successful marching tens of miles under continuous shelling to just see the mobile artillery back up a bit. Only time they get a shot at tanks is when the Russians are advancing into the Ukrainian defensive lines.

All that we have committed to doing, we are doing, including money going out on the street with the bipartisan infrastructure bill, just passing a real first step in gun safety, even advocating for banning assault weapons, making sure that we get baby formula back where it needs to be on the shelves and in the hands of parents. So, I really look at those numbers, yes, as dissatisfaction, as the frustration of the summer, the heat. But I’m ready for the fall, when we really turn that election around after Labor Day, and all the groups that have been supporting Joe Biden get ready, get busy to really make a difference in the 2022 election.”

Maybe the hope was that given a little bit of time, cooler heads would prevail and remind everyone that overturning RvW would not ban abortion, but rather give the question back to the States. Then again, maybe the goal was to give pro-baby-killers time to organize. Either, the first plan succeeded or the second plan failed because protests have been less than I expected.
