Welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. Get your best treats ready, kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

Special Submission

Do you remember the cute little bunny and doggie on the Christmas blanket a couple of weeks ago? We were privileged to choose a nic for the submitter:

I've literally been away from civilization for about 2 weeks with very limited cell service but was able to catch your Pet Thread on the 3rd with my non-feline fur critters-thanks for featuring them. I also like the mention of Cookie (kind of) the following week.

I only saw 2 votes so I'll go with "Captain Cofevre" ...... even though a lurker blew my cover as Satan! (Someone has to make sure the kitties harvest everyone's souls!!)

chooseaniccc.jpg

Here's an unusual meme:

My only question is how quickly this poor guy (or gal) exacted its revenge on the makeup artist. I'm amazed that it was able to sit so long to get all dolled up.

barrcatty.JPG

Don't try this at home.

Just to put everyone's minds at ease, the actual kitties which will be stealing souls (or at least hearts) are pictured as today's first PetMorons below.

Meet The PetMorons

&&&

douuooo.jpg

&&&

macccy.jpg

updates on my morons, who amongst the 3 guys usually have 1 brain cell that they share amongst themselves, but unfortunately, even that one gets lost at times.

First up is Johnny who got this dapper outfit from my daughter who took the Christmas picture.

Next is Spooky (aka A$$hole) and Peanut (the ginger cat) laughing at each other's jokes. Moments like this confirm that any of their spats are pure BS.

Finally there's Mackeral (aka Wacky Mac) looking ravishing as always.

"Captain Cofevre" (Not Satan)

I like the kitties.

tico eng sett.jpg

Meet Tico the English Setter, new addition to the pet moron family. Expected to occasionally hunt upland birds but always be a family companion.

General lurker occasionally encountered as ETF3

Tico is beautiful. So alert in that photo! Ready to be both a family companion and an occasional hunter, I would say.

momssfrankencat.jpg

From Bif in the comments back on July 2. This is one of the kitties described here, billed as "Mom's Franken-cat":

Was petting two of Mom's menagerie last week. Two polydactyl (extra toes) Siamese hybrid bob-tail ragdoll kitties. Sweet as the day is long. Goofy a$$ looking cats though. Them extra toes make them walk with a pigeon toed gait up front, while that bob-tail hind end looks like a muscle car all jacked up. Fluffy as the day is long and gorgeous as all get out with the Siamese blue eyes and fur with the rag doll coat.

I don't know about the "Franken-cat" designation. That's a wild combination of characteristics for a kitty, but a beautiful cat. Glad to hear they are sweet. We have had a couple of feral polydactyl kitties who were kinda mean. But then, they were feral.

I have never had any experience with a rag doll kitty.

Mama Delilah in the whelping box with her week-old daughters Ruthie, Diana and Rosalind, born July 1st. For all her wins, awards and ribbons, this will be the most important achievement in her life. Everything she did in the ring is just an affirmation of her quality that justifies carrying on her line.

Hadrian the Seventh

What a great mama!

Had the vet check Jake out. He needs to lose weight of course. Otherwise, he looks great. Fanny the cat goes in to have another tooth pulled. She had three out about four months ago.

14 The top pic lol
Doggeh was overdue for his bath. I wanted to shower him outside but didn't want to use freezing cold water, so I ran a hose from.the washtub in the laundry room out the window to the deck. Worked ok until it was done and I went back inside and saw that water had dripped under the washtub. Luckily there was a plastic tray there so the floor was mostly dry. Phew!

35 Update on Blue: Irish Setter Featured here in a lost/found Old Dog pet thread a couple of weeks back.
He bounced back, put on some weight, but now is getting thin again and "Sundowning"...incessantly pacing/panting often for hours at a time, following a repetitive path..into corners, or a seemingly random spot on the wall, and back again, on and off the bed, over the top of his brother/cousin Frankie's bed Eliciting growls from Frank that Blue can't seem to hear...the worst night he was doing it from around 10:30 until 5am, Next night only a few minutes. But nearly every night for at least a little while. Will go up and down the stairs now without being carried, but will pace the floor at the bottom of the stairs until he is "Escorted" or tapped on the ear after which he will climb them.

39 My humans were threatening to nap right through the Pet Thread again, so I gave them my loudest bark and ran to the front door, so Master had to get up, to look out at... nothing happening. I deserve a treat for this.

New Master and Mistress are learning pretty quickly. They seem to know a lot of words. I'm slowly earning their trust. I'm only one years young. They didn't tell that backscratcher and the rattan nightstand it was on were different from my squeaky chew toys. Still a lot of training-up to do.

They thought they had a smallish German Shepherd mix at first, but soon realized I am of the mighty and honored Belgian Malinois breed. We all now live in Daisy's Kingdom of Chaos and Craziness.

But I am cute.

41 I was driving some dogs to a field trial when I was about 16-18, had a half-way overnight stay at a family friends home...I got in around 11pm and was put up in the daughters room(unfortunately she was off to college...the gyrrl was hot, hot, hot)
Awoken to the weirdest sensations I have ever experienced, strange room, strange sounds, weird "something" waving in the dark, something even weirder going on to my ears... Turned out it was her twin Siamese cats, one was mouthing each of my ears and purring, tails wagging back/forth in unison...Their names? "Mine &Yours"

Afternoon, everybody. Captain Covfefe's big black longhair with the red tie looks much like my late Wolf, whom I miss every day. I had "Stirling" for a male cat and "Dagny" for a female all lined up. Still may get to use the latter.

Stirling did great at his followup vet visit this am: 6.2 lbs. (up 1.5 in only a month!), quite healthy except for a touch of ringworm on his back (they gave me some cream for him), and he got his rabies shot and a couple of boosters. He should be set, except for his alterations in 2 months, for a year.

The vaccines have subdued him a little. I doubt that will last long.

Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser

Posted by: Captain Obvious, Laird o' the Sea at July 16, 2022 04:49 PM (aaGzp)

74 At first, my humans trusted me to run around loose, because I need to hit 88MPH at least once a day. I stayed inside my walkies territory, even when I went dashing after that deer. Until...

Cousin Jarl brought the Master's son out one day. Jarl is a big ol' Malamute and was my instant friend, and we wrestled and ran around, off our tethers, until suddenly our Collective Dogmind decided to run all the way out the gate, up the road, to the neighbor's coop of critters that squawk and flutter. Jarl was just playful, enjoying making them run and fly. My mostly peaceful wild dog instincts kicked in and I was going for the throat of one of those birds when they caught me. No, I really wouldn't've. Really. 🐔

Days later, Jarl came to visit again, when somehow Jarl got loose and my collar came off, and Jarl and I bolted for the front gate. Jarl's master hurried after us in his truck, but I hadn't gone out the gate this time, and I happily jumped in the truck.

Then the humans caught up with Jarl, chasing chickens again. The neighbors were understanding. My humans told me that chasing chickens was bad. I didn't do it again. I am a good dog. I deserve a treat for this.

The cat who was apparently my mother's No. 1 favorite was also named Sparky: a black shorthair with a patch of white hair on his chest who was quite the mouser. He was gone long before I was born, but she kept an actual sepia-toned 8 x 10 studio portrait of him on a shelf in the house. One of her apartment house neighbors was a photographer, and in return for Sparky keeping his place free of vermin, he had Sparky sit for him. (That had also been her brother's nickname when they were growing up.)

82 Oh, and the "franken-cat," the part Ragdoll, is a beauty as well. I've often thought about getting a Ragdoll. They are supposed to be big, with no matting and little shedding to their fur, and extremely good natured. The name came from their supposed tendency to relax or even go limp when picked up. (I can imagine the scenario now: "Uh, sorry! I broke your cat!")

It's nice of you to visit and give them a meal. FenSpouse and I feel a group of feral cats every Saturday and Tuesday and other people do it other days. They have all been neutered and spayed, through animal control, and if some look sick someone tries to get them to the vet. They've seen us for so long they recognize us and a cat I call "Freckle" because he?she?is a black and white cat with a big black marking under her nose will hang around us more than it used to.

Linda wants me to do the same for the late white-and-black Siberian Chekov. I've got several definitive pictures of him, the two I sent to the Pet Thread after he passed on in March, so I don't see the necessity. A painting of big black Wolf, one that could highlight his dark fur by showing the charcoal grey that fringed his ruff, would be more of a challenge for a painter.

I am tempted to re-use "Wolf" as a name for another big black cat, but it doesn't seem respectful.

I wonder if my mother would have heard of him when she was a teen (1928 onward). She was no Socialist; her opinion of FDR (who was pres. when she was a young adult) was contrary to everything I was being taught in school and in history texts, but very much in line with what we think here.

It makes me so happy to hear Stirling is settling in. You're such a great kitty person.

Lucy has a lipoma on the base of her tail. It's been there for at least three years. Doesn't bother her. The vet has either not noticed, or noticed and not cared. She has a follow up visit for her thyroid meds next week. Do I mention it? I don't want to be pressured into surgery if it's purely cosmetic. What do you think?

Thanks for the hat tip, Nurse! I'd like to think I'm good to my cats. Stirling probably does not think so at night; I've been locking him out of the bedroom so he won't suckle on me or wake me up too early. (He napped with me this afternoon, though.)

Don't let them pressure you, but do have Lucy's lipoma checked out.

108 So some sad news on the pet front. On Thursday night, Kraken (Who has been featured on the pet thread before) was acting a bit oddly. He stumbled a bit getting to the door for a turnout and I had to escort him back into the house. He was obviously in a bit of pain so I got him to lie down on a bed and got some rice, peanut butter and gabapentin into him.

Checked on him an hour later and he was gone. It looked like he simply went to sleep and never woke up.

112 Lucy is 8-9 years old.
She's already had an acute kidney accident when she ingested a topical anti inflammatory I had on my knee. She was in intensive care for four days and then I had to give her IV fluids twice a day for months. Her kidneys are fine now, but she was getting skinny and a little skraggley a year or so ago, and I took her in. She had an overactive thyroid and they put her on meds twice a day. Her labs are good so far, but she has a recheck next week.

She's a fink. I love her anyway.

113 More thoughts about my mother and U.S. history . . . She was born in 1916, so she would have gone to nursing school around 1934 at 18, would have been 25 when Pearl Harbor happened, 29 at the time of the atom bomb, 34 when the Korean conflict started, and 37 when I was born. And 41 when my brother came along (?!). I used to ask her about her life, but I wish I'd known more of the right questions to ask.

She was cat-free in my life until I was 12. Our landlord on Bourbon St. was "no pets," and she was afraid the upstairs neighbors would squeal if she brought in a cat. Once they moved and the new neighbor (a middle-aged probably gay fellow) moved in, she immediately went kitten shopping.
