Welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. See if you can remember where the really good treats are, kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

How did your pets do with the fireworks? We had some hysteria when dogs were still out when the noise began, otherwise, we had dogs on feet, under desk, in office with closed door. They still had some trouble sleeping.

Sharon (willow's apprentice) sent in this fun video. Dog makes a friend, gets a special treat.

And this one. A short dog with a big problem.

From someone who may wish to self-identify in the comments, Anti doesn't matter:

I built this litter box cabinet to match my kitchen cabinets. I have also attached photos of the users, who couldn't care less.

Great design! The cats are beautiful and the garden is lovely.

Anybody else done something like this? Thinking about it?

Meet The PetMorons

twinndesert.jpg

From High Desert David:

Bohannon and River. 5 year old brother and sister. One ear up, one ear down. Probably smooshed against each other in their mom's belly. They act like twins mimicking each other all the time. 110 out here in Las Vegas and they still cuddle.

What a distinctive set of twins! Don't you just love to look at them?

thalllia.jpg

Loooong time reader, *very* occasional commenter (Lyana, Lady Lil).

This big, blue-eyed beauty is our much beloved Thalia. We think she is a mix of tabby, siamese and ragdoll. She adopted us - showed up in our back yard one day in March about 5 years ago, friendly and chatty. We had several neighborhood cats who would come visit for snacks and pets, and we thought maybe she was a new one! Hubbie is quite allergic, so we fixed up a cozy spot for her outside, and noticed that she didn't really leave our yard.

After about a month, we put a collar on her. Another month later, a note on the collar. There was no response, so we started looking through lost pet ads, but didn't see anything close to her description. Meanwhile, she became our second daughter's therapy pet; it's not an exaggeration to say that daughter survived finals her junior year without a significant mental health crisis because of that cat. She would come home from school, go directly to the back yard, and just sit and stare into the distance and pet a lapfull of very soft, purring, appreciative cat.

A distinctive cat and a great story!

max d.JPG

Dear MisHum:

I have some very sad news - last month, I lost Max. On Sunday, June 19th, Max had to have emergency surgery for bloat (GDV). During the surgery, they found that his stomach had twisted 360 degrees, damaging much of the tissue. His spleen also had to be removed. His prognosis was guarded because of the damage to his stomach, and I was told that the next 24-48 hours were critical. I was able to visit Max on Tuesday, and he did not look good initially but brightened up when he saw me. When I visited him over the next two days, he showed gradual improvement and was even able to walk on his own. Everyone thought he was going to make it, but on Friday morning they found that he was leaking a lot of fluid from his incision. The diagnosis was that the fluid was coming from his stomach, which was not healing on its own, and there were only two options - additional surgery to see if they could fix the damage, which they did not recommend, or euthanasia. I made the decision to let Max go and cross the Rainbow Bridge. I know it was best for him, but it was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

I really miss Max, but I am thankful for the time we had together especially since he got me get through the pandemic. We were two old bachelors, living comfortably together and enjoying each other's company. I thought we would have more years together, but that was not to be. Our time together was much too short, but I will always treasure the memories I have: Max barking defiantly at the thunder, sitting in front of me when he wanted a treat, eagerness itself to go for a ride in the car - all precious moments. Max will be in my heart forever.

The picture is Max two days after his surgery when I first visited him. Thank you.

Max's Dad

Awwww. We had a fairly young dog go through surgery for bloat. Very tough. She survived, but she was not the same and died not long afterward. I am so sorry. I am glad you have those treasured memories.

From Jewells:

This sweet old boy is Blue a slightly overweight coonhound. He's nine years old, was owner surrender. He's very sweet and loves to be around all of us. We are working on integration and I think he'll soon be with the other big dogs and have the run of the house. He hates his kennel!

Hope he finds his forever home fast!

3 Always sad to lose a beloved pet and friend. I'm not looking forward to that day, but I will treasure the memories forever.

As for fireworks, my own kitties do quite well. About the only thing they do is perk their heads up when they hear an especially loud boom, but other than that they pretty much ignore them. They do congregate around me, though, in order to feel safe, I think.

7 My friend lost her puppy of 16 years yesterday, Sniffles. My friend bought the little Pekingese puppy for her parents as a surprise gift back in 2006. They decided they didn't want him. Both her parents and the ex told her to return him for the money ($850). She told them all, 'Are you crazy?' So she kept the little guy. He was funny, a character, while sometimes being a pain in the ass. But what pet doesn't go there? The thing is, had she returned the dog to the breeder, well . . . . The breeder had a Momma and a litter of pups. The breeder also had a pit bull that was kept separated from the other dogs. Unfortunately, one time -- and it takes only one time -- the pittie got to the Pekingese, mauling them all to death. So if my friend had returned Sniffs, he would never had had a life. When my friend got divorced three years ago, Sniffs took on the role of man of the house. If I was on the phone with her, I would hear him barking in the background, telling her to 'get off the damn phone and pay attention to ME'. What was also funny is that my friend is usually in bed by 9 p.m.

8 Critters!

Posted by: Duke Lowell at July 09, 2022 03:41 PM (u73oe)

9 Sometime after 8 each night, he'd start barking at her that it was time to go to bed. He wouldn't stop barking until she was actually in bed. He was a cocksure, happy dog. While my friend is understandably sad, I told her to celebrate his 16 years of life that she gave him because without her, he wouldn't have had it, he would have been dead. In the end, he had Cushing's Disease and a series of UTIs. Went peacefully in his sleep. RIP Sniffs, you were one of the good ones. My friend is donating a lot of things, food, piddle pads, etc., to a local rescue shelter just so things don't go to waste.

25 My kittehs also are very chill about fireworks. Never move or get agitated. Maybe they were artillery in a past life. They all but cock their little heads working out range and bore diameter. But man, anything REMOTELY like a vacuum cleaner and they hide in the deepest recesses of the closet!

They are big boys with excellent hunting skills, so finding toys that are interesting *and* will withstand their attacks is hard. Found a toy called a "FloppyFish" that you charge up and it moves if the cat touches it. Big success. Got one for my Mom's cat. Also big success. Sister's dog discovered it during a visit... and now the DOG has one. I should get a discount or something...

Sorry about Max. Bloat and torsion are no joke, especially in deep-chested dogs. It seems GasX forms a significant part of our guys' diet.

Dutch came down with it the night before the 2013 Westminster KC show, where he likely would have been Best of Breed. Luckily, Her Majesty saw it in time for him to have emergency surgery.

Sweet twins!

Studies show petting our pets lowers blood pressure. My doggie doesn't like to be petted much. She wants to play or wants to touch base and go on her way.

35 I've had few dogs growing up that had to be put to sleep because of age but I was out of the house by then and didn't effect me too much. Fast forward many years later and a puppy I had gotten my mom and that I trained and grew close to had to be put to sleep some years later for medical reasons . I had to take him to the vet and afterwards discovered the definition of wailing . Kind of embarrassing even though I was by myself. It just happened.

36 Our dog, Luna, really hates thunderstorms--she thinks the thunder is growling and barks at it--but hadn't reacted to fireworks in the past. Apparently on July 4th the noises were much closer than they had been the last times and she started barking and insisting on going outside to deal with the perpetrators. Once she realized it wasn't a storm she came back inside but was still very agitated until the noises stopped around 10 p.m.

I could use something like that cabinet. Stirling's litter box is out on the edge of the kitchen, and while I keep it clean, he does scatter litter around. It has to stay out here, since he has to spend the night in the living room. I can put a second box in the bathroom, and may when and if I adopt another kitten.

54 Bohannon and River remind me of my late Chekov and Wolf, one white-and-black, the other black. And Thalia a remarkably beautiful.

Sabrina Chase, I got talked into buying a FlippetyFish for my two monsters late last year. Chekov, the older cat, loved it, but Wolf the bigger and younger, wouldn't touch it. Perhaps it was the noise it made. He didn't like the noise of the water fountain I bought them, though Chekov drank willingly from it. I haven't yet charged it and brought it out for Stirling to investigate.

Thanks. He really wasn't an affectionate dog, just liked to know you were paying attention to him. But when I visited him, my friend went out for a while so I took a nap on the couch. Sniffs laid on my chest, back legs sprawled and took a nap, too. When my friend saw that she was like 'he usually doesn't do that'. Well, sorry, he does with me. He actually knew the different names of his plethora of chew toys, star, snowman, tree, moon, etc. You could ask him to go to his box of chew toys and get 'star', e.g., and he'd root around until he found it and brought it to you. I admit I never saw a dog do that before. He really had a good working vocabulary, way more than the average dog.

56 Fireworks weren't really a feature around here last weekend, at least not loudly enough to penetrate to my living room. Thunder does not seem to bother the cats I've known. It's raining right now with the occasional crash of thunder. Stirling is sprawled next to me on the couch, as relaxed as you can imagine.

Top entrance litter boxes are great if your cat will use them. They can't kick the litter out. I use these and there is hardly any cat litter tracked outside the box. I spill more cleaning them than the cat tracks.

Ingenious. I can imagine a young cat using that, but not an older one.

Stirling's box has a lip around it, so not much litter escapes. I suppose I'll just buy a Dustbuster -- they still make those?

Our dear departed old lady kitty, Mischa had a good working knowledge of hoomin words.

If Mischa got pissy, Mrs. Mahon would call her a bitch, and, holy cow, eye-daggers! And Mischa would ignore the Missus for hours, sometimes days.

66 Yeah bloat is something you have to be wary of with big dogs. They should eat small meals multiple times a day or if that's not possible, you have to find a way to make them slow down when eating. And they should never be put through any exertion after eating,

Even with those precautions it's still can be a problem. Max I'm glad you were able to spend some time with him before he passed and knowing he led the best life he could with his best friend.

67 "Anybody else done something like this? "

When I finished the basement, we put a full bath in the basement. I put a small litter box sized cubby hole in the wall that is up against the crawl space under the stairs, which was wasted space anyway. In addition to the cubby hole, I ran a 4 inch duct to the outside and put a quiet AC powered inline fan in the duct. The fan pulls off most of da schtinky and blows it outside.

Ingenious. I can imagine a young cat using that, but not an older one.

Stirling's box has a lip around it, so not much litter escapes. I suppose I'll just buy a Dustbuster -- they still make those?
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at July 09, 2022 04:40 PM (c6xtn)

My cat Reagan is 13 and she still uses it no problem I have another one that is a front entry one and I keep a broom next to it, she kicks litter out all the time. Both of my cats used the top entry one immediately.
You have/had Maine coon kitten? I think these are too small for those cats.
I've heard of people making them out of Rubbermaid containers for the huge cats and it's cheaper. Or just use a big Rubbermaid container with no top on it would work.
I bought a Modkat litter box when they first came out years ago.
I wouldn't change if what you have is working. I was tired of a cup of litter being kicked out daily.

71 Sorry for your loss, Max's Dad.

I had all the fans going in the bedroom on the 4th. Dog and cat came back with me. I use a Bible reading app at night, so I just put that on a pong selection. We all crashed right out. I think the loudest noise was during the day.

Also, Fanny the cat has to have another tooth pulled. It's been about four months since she had three removed. I'm going to have this done on Friday. Don't want to but she was having problems eating last time.

It's one of them really docile ones that when it flies it looks like it has no right to be airborne, but will leave you alone as long as you don't mess with it.

Unlike yellow jackets. Fooking hate yellow jackets.

75 Marie-Antoinette the late smart black cat knew her name or any variation of it, Marie, Twanette, etc. One night a character on TV said the name, and Marie looked sharply at the screen, as if thinking, "Who's calling me?"

The remarkable thing was that it was probably not the name her first human gave her. The lady who rescued her and gave her to Linda dubbed the cat M-A.

No, Stirling is no Coon. The big red fellow I had years ago passed on in 1999, and black Wolf, who was the same size, is gone now too.

On another topic, I bought 12 small cans of Wilderness Baby Blue kitten food at Petco this AM. The main price was 8.99, 7.49 with a Petco card, and Miss Linda put in some discount she found online so the total came to about $13. Stirling loves the stuff, and he'll chew through all the cans pretty quick. Is there a good-quality brand of kitten chow at Walmart for less?

My shed is always peppered with these little wasp nests, not much bigger than a walnut. But as long as I don't swat at them, they are at most mildly aggravated. I get stung once or twice a year, but, still: not yellow jackets.

Or Murder Hornets!!!! (cue scary music - duh-duh-duh) All kidding aside, I would scream like a little kid if I ever saw a murder hornet in the wild.

86 I mentioned before that I was bitten on the hand/wrist a few months ago by 2 cats, one being my (normally sweet) Pretty Girl who was having none of it with this little cat who was passing through my (our) backyard. I tried to grab PG before she attacked the new cat and they both ended up biting me.

A few weeks ago, little cat showed up again. PG *hates* him. I kept her inside and petted him; he's very friendly. He also has a collar *and* his nuts. Yeah, when a short-haired cat has his equipment, you can tell. I came inside and PG attacked my feet where he rubbed. Oy. PG does not attack Creamy, the huge orange and white dude who comes around every so often. So this morning PG was growling and hissing again so I looked out and there's "Little Dude" (who's mostly orange with a little white, especially on this tail - he's got orange and white rings). But there's also Creamy ("Big Dude") and Creamy is not liking Little Dude's presence. Eventually LD goes off and I go out to hang with Creamy and get some pics of him. He's very shy and always on-guard for any sound, but he likes me and eats out of my hand. I wish they'd all get along. I

89 Two Wednesdays ago my elder daughter came back from Walmart with a tiny tuxedo boy, with flea collar. He was witnessed getting dumped in the parking lot, probably thrown out of the car window since he had a tender spot on one flank, managed to avoid getting run over and walked into the main entrance. The boss said he had to go so Daughter bought a small pet carrier and brought him home. We named him Marty. I posted here sometime ago that one of our neighbor's chickens was laying a daily egg in an old pet carrier on the back porch. When the same Daughter went o check for eggs she found two gray kittens, almost identical, sitting in the carrier. Those two are Eva, the female with a tiny splash of white under the chin, and Wally (from Wall-E, a movie I love) the boy. All three get on well amd play, even rough at times. An older pair, just over 1 year, have adopted them and hover around like parents and take time to teach them cat stuff - climbing curtains, shredding TP, you know .... The 'old' pair: Cole, completely black like Mummy, & Ashley, she was gray at birth but has turned not quite black. Photos when I get some presentable ones. The other older cats seem to be okay with them.

I buy blue buffalo and it's really expensive and getting more so. I buy it from chewy. You save some money on the auto ship and shipping is free.
I would put the brand you buy in google shopping and see where it's the cheapest.
One of my friends buys a costco Kirkland brand no grain food for her cats and dogs, I'm not sure if they make a kitten one. It's premium food at a cheaper price.

101 Many thanks for the kind comments about Max. It's nice to be part of a community that you can share the sad times as well as the good times. My neighbors were very supportive as well, since they knew how much Max meant to me - one even brought me flowers. When I'm ready, I will be getting another dog because they make life so much better (cats do also, but in a different way based on my experiences sharing a home with them).

I'm so sorry for the loss of your good friend Max. I'm still coping with the loss of my Rowdy dog. The house is quieter without him. The other 2 dogs are trying to fill the gap, with the little old man Oliver (he's 16) following my every move and the psycho girl Mollie, short for Molotov trying to be good company on daily walks. Grieving takes longer than you think.
