Ace of Spades Pet Thread, July 2

best therapist dogg.jpg

Happy Independence Day Weekend! Welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. Beg politely for a treat, kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

Hrothgar sends an entertaining, narrated compilation of pets (and wildlife) learning to enjoy water in the backyard, sometimes with some difficulty. Or learning to temporarily tolerate the water (in the case of a certain cat).

Fireworks are more likely to cause anxiety in pets than water at this time of year, however. Here are some tips for helping them cope with the noise. Keep those cats corralled, too!

Meet The PetMorons

l darkblast.jpg

From Jeff, Lord Darkblast:

Blaster is about 14 years old (he's a rescue, so we are not sure. Mellowest cat EVER. He's He'll on our local lizards and frogs.

A true PetMoron!

* * *

Okay, we have some kitties this week, so how about some different pets from a lurker? Pick a nic for him: El Guapo, El Jefe, or Captain Covfefe

Should we vote?

He has cats, too, but we'll save them for later.

bunneeechrsm.jpg

Here's a pic of my daughter's rabbit, Cookie. Cute bunny and she has fur as soft as a cloud.

doggeechrsb.jpg

Finally is our dog, Fred. I'm not a dog fan, and prefer cats, but since he's family, here's his picture. Yeah, I know he looks cute, but no, not a dog fan.

Awww. I bet he gets love at home!

sunneeey.jpg

From Marty: Sunny with a chance of chainsaw!

This is Sunny. I've been petless for 14 years after so many years of cats, dogs, horses and birds. Slavyanka arm-twisted me into getting this guy from a local farmer.

Typical kitten - cuddly with deep purrs and Velcro-like claws that stick to everything, especially skin and drapes.

His favourite toy is a potato about the size of a clementine. He also loves YouTube videos of birds.

A potato-loving kitten!

Stirling_02_Edited.jpg

A new cat chez Wolfus!

Very recent photo of Stirling the kitten, aka His Highness, Prince of Baby Panthers, Dammit, and No, Dammit.

His story I've told before: I spotted him on Petfinder and found his sturdy, confident look appealing. On 6/11 we drove some 4 hours to see him. Of course the shelter knew I would hardly turn him down after that, and they were right. Besides, he was, and is, good-natured and quiet, went right into his carrier purring, was quiet during the entire return trip, and loves our company. According to what we were told, his mother passed from an infection soon after he and his littermates were born. The shelter hand-reared them, which explains why he is so happy and confident around humans. (Since I feed him, he thinks I'm his mother -- he wants to suckle and nuzzle me from time to time, and I'm gently trying to discourage that!) He seems bright, though he's not really responding yet to his name. With luck he'll develop into a good-sized medium-hair.

He's 3.5 months old, about 5 lbs., eats enthusiastically and plays with the usual crazed abandon of healthy kittens everywhere.

As you might have guessed, I love him already.

We can tell.

* * *

Love those PetMorons! Thank you for sharing your pets with us. We have a few couple left for next week.

If you would like to send pet and/or animal stories, links, etc. for the Ace of Spades Pet Thread, the address is:

Remember to include the nic or name by which you wish to be known at AoSHQ, or let us know if you want to remain a lurker.

Until next Saturday, have a great week!

23 Just got back from linner/dunch with my family and we're walking up the steps to our front door when my wife suddenly screamed bloodyhell, grabbed me, and started pulling at me. She couldn't speak and just indicated off to my left at the wall near me making repeated breathy "eeeeeeek" noises.

So, anticipating unimaginable horror I slowly turned while backing off. It was two lizards having sex on the side of our house by the door.

Once my wife reassessed the sitch', decided everything was ok, started breathing normally, and released her death grip she explained her reaction saying she thought it was some giant dark green scaly spider slithering about. Sure, ok. I look back where the lizards were and now they're both looking over at me with an, "um do you mind pal" kind of expression.

I will note here that she attempted to strongly pull me away from the unimaginable horror in her first reaction which is an important trait you want in a spouse. Panic but with protective action. She's a keeper.

32 In the course of wasting my valuable time I came across a breed I had never previously heard of--the Shisakotu Inu, which is apparently the oldest Japanese dog breed.
It's a little bigger than the Shiba Inu but has many of the same traits.
It's apparently hard to train, not because of lack of intelligence but because of wild traits
It can do anything but sometimes doesn't want to.
Very pretty.

36 I think that indoor cats do better with fireworks than lots of dogs. For us, the big dogs seem to suffer most and want to sit on your feet.

Sometimes indoor cats will dart out the door if a blast hits nearby, though. And outdoor cats often go missing.

Dogs outdoors have a terrible time.

Indeed he was. Red classic tabby, and I mean a flaming orange, with lots of white on chest and paws, an ASPCA Special in June of '83. (In fact, by one of those odd coincidences, I adopted AZ and Stirling on the exact same day and month 39 years apart.) A fuzzy kitten, he grew into my first longhaired cat. Mrs. Wolfus No. 2, who was from that state, named him: He was large and sandy, and prickly like a cactus.

67 Hadrian - Sorry for your loss of your pup. Having lost my faithful companion recently, I know the pain.

On Judgement Day Saint Peter stands, A list of virtues in his hands.
As all the souls in silence wait To see who’ll pass through heaven’s gate.
"You’ll enter first," he says, "if you Can swear your heart was always true.
And you were constant to the end, A steadfast, loyal, devoted friend.
Never spiteful, never mean, Unchanging through good times and lean.
With no desire but this: to be Allowed to love eternally."
And this is why Saint Peter's hand Throws wide the heavenly portals, and
With wagging tails and shining eyes The dogs walk into paradise.

81 Wolf: Stirling looks just like my Wicked Witch, only a lot smaller. I really hope he becomes as sweet and loving as the Witch. And, yes, for a while she thought her name was Dammit! The XO refers to her as LB, for little bastard. After you've nursed an elderly cat through its last couple of years, a young, healthy, energetic kitten can be hard on the nervous system. (You really didn't need to display all those knicknacks, any way.)

I've had two purebred Shelties, and one with a lot of Sheltie in her ancestry. In my experience, Shelties panic at the tiniest "bang!". I finally asked my vet for a sedative for the mixed breed, and she prescribed Alprazolam. So when the dog ran out of her Alprazolam, I shared mine with her. It did help. But I would suggest talking to your vet before sharing your meds with your dog. I have also seen a couple of YouTubes about giving dogs CBD. My friendly local hemp shop does have pet treats, but they were expensive. And, again, I would talk to my vet first. Good luck all of you with jumpy dogs. In the past, I have sat up practically all night with Shelties.

Loving God, watch over American Kestrel and those dear to her in whatever the situation might be. Let her know that you are with her, beside her fighting this battle, Send her comfort, peace and strength through your spirit and by you mighty arm. May rough places be made smooth. Amen.

91 We had a cat who had too many problems to deal with at age 20, so we had him put down (Vet agreed).
Remaining cat (around 16) is devastated at loss (disappearance) of buddy, as is Minnie the Goldendoodle, so we are giving remaining cat CBD oil, which is specified for DOGS. Counter person at store said they didn't have any for CATS.
Does anybody in this thread know the difference and what to do about things?
Haven't posted here in a couple years (got called a troll because I thought nothing would happen voter fraud wise), but I could really use some non-political advice.
Thanks!

95 Psalm 40, vs. 1-2

I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

99 I was hoping we'd get to see Stirling on the Pet Thread!

He looks absolutely adorable. He'll be running the Wolfus household in no time, I'm sure.

100 Kappa was our first dog growing up. Oldest brother brought her home from his fraternity to save her. She was abused. They'd get her drunk and throw fire crackers at her.

The 4th was traumatic for her. She wouldn't go outside to do her business. We'd put in the car and take her out to the country away from the firecrackers so she could pee and poop. Not convenient but you do what you got to do for them.

Thank you!
I looked "Rescue Remedy" up on the internet, and it's one heck of a lot cheaper than 'Hemp Extract', too ($20 vs $50)! Will try that, I think.

109 Hadrian: My condolences over the puppy that didn't make it. Even after only a couple of days, it's really hard. I hope the others grow up big, strong, and champions like their mother.

Has anyone been watching Catturd 2 on Twitter?. Two weeks ago, his bitch whelped a litter of ten. He's been posting pictures like mad.

110 was petting two of Mom's menagerie last week. two polydactile (extra toes) siamese hybrid bob-tail ragdoll kitties. sweet as the day is long. goofy a$$ looking cats though. them extra toes make them walk with a pigeon toed gait up front, while that bob-tail hind end looks like a muscle car all jacked up. fluffy as the day is long anf gorgious all get out with the siamese blue eyes and fur with the rag doll coat.

111 Late here but I’m so sorry about the male puppy, Hadrian. It’s great, though, that Delilah is a terrific mom.
The long-awaited Stirling pic is great, too.
All these pets are adorable.
Definitely prayers for American Kestrel. I very much enjoy your comments.

112 I use Rescue Remedy for seizures. It's one of those homeopathic things that people say doesn't work. It seems to help lessen the severity of the seizure. They do sell cat phremones and that might help. It's useful when they are stressed.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at July 02, 2022 05:09 PM (YynYJ)

113 Sorry Hadrian. Condolences.

My Bogie is not enjoying the heat. My Spitzen were all anti-summer, but I expected Jacks to still run on the grass. Nope, but that's ok, I don't like the heat either. All in all a beautiful summer and he's enjoying the dog days of summer with my grandsons. They have a Keeshond who can't face the heat at all.

115 Wolfus! The new kitteh is stunning. Congrats.

AND I love little Fred, being a total dog fan.

I saw these weird cat toys the other day, they meow, purr, and use different volume and intonations. They also roll on to their sides and roll back. Very odd things.

117 113. We had to return our Keeshond pup to the breeder (much sadness), but yeah. Not a summer-loving breed. I’ve only seen one other around here though there are other spitz types I’ve seen on walks. Poor things obviously hate summer but they are the most joyous walkers in cold weather!

118 Move out here. It's 66 today, supposed to hit 74. We have no hot weather in sight. At least my dog's hair is growing back out from that field clip I did.

125 Love black cats, I had a lovely black cat once. She terrorized all things birds, lizards, rats. Thunder shirts never worked for my dog, CBD biscuits didn't work either. The only thing that ever worked was crawling into his dad's lap. Started today getting out into the garden at 8:00 am, need to start early here before it gets to damn hot. Was watering away and got a warning from a rattler. It was on the other side of our snake fencing in our neighbors yard but we took it away as he has a dog as well, a beautiful Anatolian Shepherd that we didn't want to get bit. Always fun gardening in the desert.

126 CBD oil for cats

Some general guidelines for dosage have been published by various sources. Many holistic veterinarians recommend a dosage between 0.1 milligram per kilogram of body weight and 1 milligram per kilogram of body weight.

From a google search.

127 Love the pet pictures! I am hoping to have another grey cat again some day. They want me to take my Foldie in to have another tooth pulled. It hasn't been that long since they pulled three. I'll probably do it but it stresses me out.
Posted by: Notsothoreau at July 02, 2022 03:37 PM (YynYJ)

I've had a lot of cats get teeth pulled, never seems to bother them. Once when an older guy got a zillion pulled in one go the vet was warning about soft food and how he'd be sleeping it off....and no sooner did he get home than he staggered to the food bowl and ate a bunch of dry food until he was full.

Posted by: Oldcat at July 02, 2022 07:43 PM (eoQWY)

128 My kittehs caused leaks in my cases of bottled water. It started off as an accident going after bugs but I think they started doing it on purpose.
Posted by: Anti doesn't matter at July 02, 2022 04:32 PM (UMHqX)

They tend to love 'found water' and love to keep refinding it. One of mine pounced on a fallen cube from the fridge ice machine as a kitten and played with/drank it. Now every other time I go use it I have to give him a cube of his own.

130 I have used rescue remedy and Feliway plug ins and spray for my cat when her sister had cancer and we finally put her down.

I don't know if they helped but she finally stopped pulling her hair out.

Posted by: CaliGirl at July 02, 2022 07:57 PM (oeVy+)

131 I'm lucky, have a Silver Lab and she isn't bothered at all by anything sudden or loud...she just looks for where the excitement is...she'll sleep through fireworks...
