Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Why we have culture warsto organizations - even progressive organizations a coinage of Wesley Yang to describe the political belief now dominant in the United States. The successor ideology is, in Yang's words, "authoritarian Utopianism that masquerades as liberal humanism while usurping it from within".Seems to me that the "successor ideology" has gone from usurping conservatism to liberal humanism to, now, some elite leftist organizations. There is no stopping point in the successor ideology. There are other new currents in our society that may be accepted beyond the Woke. What do you think about this? I guess it has been around for a while, but has recently been re-discovered on Twitter: Disturbing images in this thread. Are melting faces better than hints as to gender in clothing for infants? How about gender-neutral skulls on toddlers? Life is rich enough, even in short stretches, that you can apply to it any proverb you wish and find supporting evidence close at hand. Amanda was smiling as we left our seats and crossed the candy- and Lysol-scented lobby, passing a poster of Cruise wearing a flight suit. His image stirred in me a sense of gratitude. One reason I had to be thankful was that Amanda had been feeling sad about the world, yet here she was bouncing along on gummy carpet, her hair still mussed from artificial tempests. "I think it was all about aging and masculinity," she observed as we exited onto the sidewalk. I nodded but offered no theory of my own, which is rare for me after a show. I happened to know the movie was controversial in certain thoughtful circles, derided as too patriotic and nostalgic, but I decided to take it as it was, perhaps as a way of snubbing these woke drones. My wife was no longer grim, that's all I cared about. The shaking seats, fast jets, and grinning movie star had cleansed her system of a long winter heralded by our downbeat president as a season of "severe illness and death." After such prophecies, people can use some fun. "At this stage of the piece I was summoned to Boston for the premiere of Sweet Little Devil. I had already done some work on the rhapsody. It was on the train, with its steely rhythms, its rattle-ty-bang that is so often stimulating to a composer....And there I suddenly heard--and even saw on paper--the complete construction of the rhapsody, from beginning to end. No new themes came to me, but I worked on the thematic material already in my mind, and tried to conceive the composition as a whole. I heard it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America--of our vast melting pot, of our unduplicated national pep, of our blues, our metropolitan madness. By the time I reached Boston I had a definite plot of the piece, as distinguished from its actual substance. "As for the middle theme, it came upon me suddenly, as my music sometimes does. It was at the home of a friend, just after I got back to Gotham....Well, there I was, rattling away [at the piano] without a thought of rhapsodies in blue or any other color. All at once I heard myself playing a theme that must have been haunting me inside, seeking outlet. No sooner had it oozed out of my fingers than I knew I had found it....A week after my return from Boston I completed the Rhapsody in Blue." -- Gershwin in a letter Last week's Thread, July 2, Federalism John Hayward on federalism Babylon Bee Prediction comes true. I was perplexed by just what a Whig was, so did a bit of research. Their key tenet is opposition to usurpation of power, whether by kings, presidents (cough*Jackson*cough) or Congress. Thus, it appears we are all Whigs to one degree or another. I don't know that the term was ever applied to judicial usurpation, but I don't know that it wasn't. Saw the "Get Back" series about the Beatles this week.
I have mind thoughts. 1)The break-up of the Beatles was due to 2.5 things a)The constant presence of Yoko broke up the established way P&J wrote songs together. Paul complains at one point that they used to lock themselves in a hotel and emerge with songs after a week or so. This turned the sessions into endless boring rehashing of same few songs. b) George Harrison's passive/agressive dickishness. Even when he gets his way, he's unhappy and a drag mostly. He wants to do his own thing, but wants the others to give him permission(or kick him out???) c) McCartney gets tired of riding herd on the others. Except for Ringo, no one's ready to go but him. No one's bringing much to the table but him. 2) McCartney is a musical genius. But, he can be wrong in his suggestions sometimes for the others' music. And even goes down the protest path for "Get Back" until he figures it out. 3) John is more charming than McCartney and tries to jolly things along. Often pays old r&r tunes they all love to try to get some comradely feeling going. Posted by: naturalfake at July 09, 2022 11:22 AM (5NkmN) 33

Basically, anyone born from 1960 forward has come of age while seeing nothing but relative peace in the world and continual advancements in society, culture, science, technology and medicine. But now, anyone born from 2002 forward will come of age in a world that is on the decline. A world in which worldwide elites are doing everything in their power to make the world worse, instead of better. I'll posit that the 'misery loves company' adage is more about how misery tends to be more contagious than happiness. Sloth loves company too I think. I can sometimes pick up on someone else's ambition, but it is harder to maintain being active while someone else is being a couch potato.

The underpinnings of socialism and liberalism (classical or whiggish Liberalism, not jimminy cockslurp cable news "liberalism") are both anti-monarchism. The legitimacy of power. The right of a populace to rule itself, rather than be ruled at the whim of a gaggle of inbred foreign perverts.

Posted by: 18-1 at July 09, 2022 11:31 AM My dad supported a family of 5 (mom, me and 2 brothers) in the 1980s and 1990s on one salary. It was not easy, but we also did not have much. No cable TV, no yearly vacations, one family car that I remember him buying in 1990 for "$8700 out the door" (Ford Escort station wagon). We lived in a 2-bedroom townhouse, all 3 of us kids in one small room. Mom bought most clothes from goodwill and discount stores like Zayre. They made the decision to sacrifice and not have much in order to spend to send all of us to Catholic grammar school and Catholic High School (Brother Rice HS in Chicago). So as of the 1980s and early 1990s, it was still possible to do that. Dad didn't even have a college degree and worked crappy jobs, sometimes overnight shift to support us. All of us went on to college, earned degrees and now live in homes larger than our childhood home. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 09, 2022 11:44 AM (Do5/p) 68

It's okay. But, just okay. Maybe lower third tier of Marvel movies. Even Disney knows the movie has problems cuz they were handing out long sheets where you could give your opinions on the movie. The movie is a dog's breakfast wherein it's starts out as a kind of 1960s Batman TV show version of Thor. Thor is a big beefy blowhard idiot who causes more problems than he solves. I suppose they handle the Lady Thor dealio about as well as they could given Marvel's New Universal Plot Point wherein the big name hero becomes a kind of sidekick in his own movie. Then stronk grrrrrl section gets mixed up with a big Kidz Rock! movie section. Then they try to end it all by asking us to take Big Dumb Thor seriously as a romantic hero who becomes a Sitcom Dad. And, of course, Disney is still committed to grooming your kids with extraneous sucker punch teh ghey scenes throughout. No there isn't a teh ghey Thor / Peter Quill scene as some have reported. It had one great joke, which i'll remember. Otherwise, a forgettable mess. Avoid. Posted by: naturalfake at July 09, 2022 11:47 AM (5NkmN) 76

Well, Chesa "Soros" Boudin left the office of San Francisco district attorney yesterday, so of course the knives are already out for his moderate replacement, Brooke Jenkins. Jenkins is the first black female to be SF DA, replacing a white male, but don't expect the media to spend one second celebrating this stunning, brave, and historic event.
The hard-Left public defenders who Boudin hired to be deliberately inept prosecutors ran to the media after Jenkins ran anymously to the media after Jenkins' first meeting with senior staff, describing how horrible the meeting was. Almost every senior staffer was hired by Boudin, or his Soros predecessor, George Gascon, who is currently facing his own recall in Los Angeles. They had this wowzer: What they described as a lack of [Jenkins'] understanding about what managing the office requires Jenkins worked in the district attorney's office for seven years, before resigning in protest over Boudin's policies. Since Jenkins is more moderate than Boudin this racism by others in her dept whom I'm assuming including a number of white employees, this may begin the redpilling this woman.
She doesn't need to be red pilled - she resigned earlier in protest over Boudin's policies. Amusingly, I think that Boudin hired almost entirely white people to staff his office - when you are hard-Left, political orthodoxy matters more than skin color. In response to Hungary's obstruction of the European Union's adoption of a 15% global minimum tax on corporate income, the Biden administration on Friday announced it will terminate a 43-year-old tax treaty with the country.
Back when Biden's minons thought that they were going to crush the Russian economy in days through sanctions, they were crowing about what a wonderful new weapon sanctions were - it seemed clear that Hungary, Poland, and anyone else who resisted the New Global Order would be subjected to similar treatment. Russia is suffering, though - some of the renamed McDonald's currently don't have French fries, since they can't import potatoes. They'll have to wait for the Russian fall potato harvest to put French fries back on the menu. Posted by: The ARC of History! at July 09, 2022 12:48 PM (I2/tG) 174

Fascinating (well, to me anyway) thread on the engineering achievement and shipping of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG). This is the kind of thing that should be taught in schools every day. The amazing achievements in engineering that have made possible everything people just take for granted.
ThreadReaderApp Link: https://bit.ly/3Iutv8a 6/ Building pipelines across oceans isn't practical, and the only way to make natural gas a global commodity is to put it on boats. The development and commercialization of liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology is a staggering achievement of engineering. 7/ To accomplish the task of shipping natural gas, it must be chilled to extremely cold temperatures at LNG export facilities, thereby transforming the gas to its liquid state. Once liquified, natural gas is loaded onto enormous, highly specialized LNG carrier ships. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 09, 2022 12:55 PM (Do5/p) 182

More:
16/ To wean Europe off Russian gas thus requires 30% of the entire global LNG export market. Given the price elasticity of demand for natural gas, and that other importing countries won't exactly forgo their own needs, the nature of the challenge facing Europe becomes clear. 17/ At the time of this writing, natural gas is trading for $6 per MM BTU in the US, $50 (!!) in Europe, and $40 in Asia. Arbitrage spreads like these are truly historic. As a reference, $50 natural gas is roughly the equivalent of $300 per barrel oil. 18/ The situation for Europe was made more dire by an explosion that occurred at the Freeport LNG export terminal in Texas. That incident - the cause of which remains under investigation - knocked off 20% of the US export capacity, largely earmarked for Europe. 19/ Since that explosion, the price of natural gas in the US has collapsed by 35% and has more than doubled in Europe. The Freeport LNG explosion was devastating to Europe's economic and geopolitical situation. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 09, 2022 01:02 PM (Do5/p) 191
Adam carolla had a story about a couple in SF who was fined $1500 for parking their car on a driveway pad on their property. The city said it is illegal to fo that since it is not an official driveway and they are parking on the front lawn in essence.
The city said they could waive the fine if they could prove the pad has been there for a long time and historically the pad has been used for parking. So the couple found a photo from 34 years ago showing a car parked on the pad. City said, nope not far back enough. So they found an aerial photo from the 1930s showing what appears to be a car on the pad of the property. City said no, the photo is not clear enough and it is inconclusive. Meanwhile as Adam noted a block away there are drug deals happening out in the open, illegals selling all sorts of shit without permits and anyone can walk into any Walgreens in the city and walk out with a basket of goods without paying. But the city is only concerned about tax payers breaking the most arcane of “laws” while turning a blind eye to real crime. Society cannot last much longer this way. Wow. Put this in context with all the food production plants being set on fire or destroyed in some way around the USA and the world and I begin to think that this is all being done on purpose to jack around with the food market and energy market. Scary times ahead.
20/ Separately, Reuters reported yesterday that the US EPA may pressure Cheniere to retrofit its LNG export terminals in Texas and Louisiana with enhanced pollution controls. This could knock out half of the entire LNG export capacity in the US for several months. 21/ If the EPA follows through with this action, expect the price of natural gas in the US to crater and prices in Europe/Asia to soar to unthinkable heights. The President will soon have to choose between our allies and his domestic supporters in the environmental movement. 22/ Natural gas is not just used as a fuel. It is also a critical input into the production of many important commodity chemicals, including ammonia, which is used to make fertilizer. Shortages of natural gas in Europe are presenting policymakers with difficult choices. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 09, 2022 01:07 PM (Do5/p) 196

I hate leftists babbling about children's "creativity" and other virtues that are not in evidence. It's Rousseauian, if I might coin a neologism: the notion that savages and children are pure and good, and only become contaminated by society. When in fact the truth is the exact opposite.

BLATANT personal attacks on Judges, both Supremes and in State Courts... calling them DANGEROUS because of things like outlawing drop boxes for votes... calling the EXTREME Right Wing and such.... The thing to remember is:
At the point the lefties/progs think they've won (or just about to), they start turning on themselves. This 'eliminating the competition' is a feature, not a bug, of their quest for power. We can see this starting to happen now (and now is a good time to get their various factions fighting with each other.) Do not underestimate their ability to pull defeat from the jaws of victory. This may be one of the things that saves us, if we can take advantage of it... Posted by: the last to post at July 09, 2022 06:34 PM (Bfe5+) 296
