Journalism (and related media) 50 years after Watergate

As Ace reported last night, it appears that Stephen Colbert's staffers were arrested for unlawful entry to House office buildings after hours. GREAT COMEDIC TIMING. Clown noses on or off?

colbert breakin.png

* * * * *

Speaking of Watergate, Steven Hayward wrote a piece on the 50th anniversary of the Watergate Break-in yesterday. Interesting if you are looking for some weekend reading.

It would break the hearts of some journalists to find out that the Woodward and Bernstein movie wasn't the whole truth. Such an inspiration!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the infamous Watergate break-in that toppled Richard Nixon and transformed American politics for the worse ever after. The Watergate saga, and especially the media's role in it, remains large a heroic tale for liberalism, though second thoughts about the whole matter are starting to emerge.

The final irony of this Tale of the Tape is that Nixon was appalled when President Johnson explained the Oval Office taping system to him before he took office in 1969. Nixon ordered the taping system removed, but reinstalled another taping system in February 1971, after his concern for leaks and the accuracy of notes of decisions taken in innumerable Oval Office meetings, along with his desire to use the tapes as an aide memoire for his inevitable post-presidency writings, got the better of him. Nixon's taping system differed in one significant way from Johnson's: while Johnson had to turn his taping system on manually (which means he could be selective about what was taped), Nixon's was voice-activated. . .

Interesting evidence about what really happened follows.

More on Watergate and its legacy over the weekend. I've got Week in Pictures to get done!

Meanwhile, Reuters, has released its 2022 "digital news report", which includes information on attitudes and consumption of news around the world. The "news business" ain't what it used to be. TicTok for news?

There is a PDF of the whole report, plus breakouts by country. Here's a short summary for the YouTube crowd:

And here are some highlights from the USA, just in case the graphics above zipped by a little too fast:

A new presidential administration in its first full year, and continuing disruption caused by the ongoing pandemic, presented challenges and opportunities for US news organisations. Remote work has become standard, health reporting is increasingly recognised as a vital public service, and many outlets have launched new products - from newsletters to podcasts to video to virtual events - to keep audiences informed.

. . . Early signs suggest that attention to news rose initially with Russia's war in Ukraine - in particular, 24-hour cable news outlets saw viewership surge in March - but longer term trends continue to point to exhaustion from a demanding news cycle.

Trust in the news media also continued to decline. The share of Americans who trust news generally fell 3pp, to 26%, while only 41% now say they trust the news they themselves use. These trends coincide with shrinking confidence even in highly regarded institutions, such as science, medicine, and the military. . .

The numbers are dismal for lots of major institutions.

In this highly charged environment, journalists have struggled to respond to disinformation campaigns related to the COVID-19 vaccine. Coverage of the networks that spread hoaxes and conspiracy theories - sometimes called the 'misinformation beat' - is increasingly common in major print and broadcast newsrooms. Public controversies like the furore over Joe Rogan's immensely popular Spotify podcast, where a succession of guests aired bogus and dangerous medical claims related to COVID, have also focused attention on the issue. However, Tow Center research suggests this truth-telling has uncertain effects in a highly polarised climate.1

"Tow Center research suggests this truth-telling has uncertain effects in a highly polarised climate."

"Truth-telling." They use such excellent, unimpeachable fact-checkers who read stuff off approved sources on the internet. Then they often incorrectly pretend that the stuff they read pertains to whatever they are passing judgment on.

This particular outfit seems to have a special hatred for Joe Rogan.

The resources newsrooms need to counter these trends are significant, yet it is still a minority who pay for online news (19%). Some large brands continue to see growth, such as the New York Times, which had surpassed 8 million digital subscriptions by the end of 2021, mostly to its news products, but helped by non-news products such as cooking content and games (the company also purchased the popular Wordle game in January 2022), as well as the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times. Even local newspaper chains have seen gains in digital subscriptions, and Axios continues to expand its local newsletter model into additional cities.

The NYT is supported by its cooking content and games?

There is information on local news outlets. I think maintaining those is a good idea. Maybe not in a form that Reuters would prefer. And comments on the news business, unionization, Google, The Facebook Papers, and more.

Not much about regular old blogging. Maybe it's in the PDF.

* * * * *

Oh, and on that "truth-telling": National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy calls on Big Tech to censor renewable energy critics in the name of "public health".

In the face of widespread public outrage, the Biden Administration last month backed away from a proposal to create a disinformation board at the Department of Homeland Security.

But now it's back with new demands to censor its critics, this time using a tactic that has worked in the recent past: by framing them as a threat to public health.

In a talk with Axios, Biden Administration Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy said, "The tech companies have to stop allowing specific individuals over and over again to spread disinformation."

After an Axios reporter asked, "Isn't misinformation and disinfo around climate a threat to public health itself?" McCarthy responded, "Oh, absolutely... We are talking, really, about risks that no longer need to be tolerated to our communities."

McCarthy pointed specifically to those who criticized the failure of weather-dependent renewables during the blackouts in Texas in February 2021. But many of those criticisms were factual. Over the last decade in Texas, investors sunk over $53 billion on weather-dependent energy sources, mostly wind turbines, which alongside frozen fossil fuel plants were largely unavailable during the cold snap in February. That was only partly because of the cold and mostly because of low wind speeds.

So, misinformation and disinformation are TRUTHS that conflict with The Regime's narrative, especially if repeated too often. Got it.

39 For the first time in American history a president, governors, mayors, hospital administrators and federal bureaucrats are determining medical treatments based not on accurate scientifically based or even experience based information, but rather to force the acceptance of special forms of care and “prevention”—including remdesivir, use of respirators and ultimately a series of essentially untested messenger RNA vaccines. For the first time in history medical treatment, protocols are not being formulated based on the experience of the physicians treating the largest number of patients successfully, but rather individuals and bureaucracies that have never treated a single patient—including Anthony Fauci, Bill Gates, EcoHealth Alliance, the CDC, WHO, state public health officers and hospital administrators.[23,38]

Jason Robards won the Oscar for playing Bradlee, but the much bigger real-life role in Woodstein's reporting was played by Harry Rosenfeld (editor in charge of WaPo's local news), Howard Simons (managing editor) and Barry Sussman (city news editor, and direct supervisor of Woodstein). All The President's Men either diminished or completely excised their roles in the story. Sussman never forgave Woodward and Bernstein for the omission.

Let's all not forget during the Kavanaugh hearings that Dem staffers let protesters into the building as a distraction to allow other staffers to break into offices, illegally access the network, steal contact info for GOP family members, and then proceeded to send cartel beheading videos to the immediate family of GOP committee members during the middle of the hearing.

And the people who did this got PROBATION.

But hey, sure, let's beat several people to death and cover it up, have people die in solitary after being denied medical care, and continue to SWAT people years later for waving some flags (they're still arresting people around here for Jan 6 - they took in most of a family last week...). Yep that's the hallmark of rule of law vs. rule of men.

90 That was only partly because of the cold and mostly because of low wind speeds.

The enemedia suffers from quite a number of pathologies that make it completely trustworthy in a modern age.

* Their primary function is to act as Party propaganda
* Journalists are far too arrogant, stupid, lazy and lacking any curiosity, context or historical perspective to be listened to on ANY topic.
* Revenue is generated on controversy and FUD. Any topic, including cookie recipes must be amped up and over the top in their presentation.
* Far too much speculation and wish casting is presented as fact.
* Their intended audience is innumerate, irrational and desirous of perverse and stupid things. For example, why is it news that Biden misspoke or fell off of a bicycle? This is insipid disposable knowledge.

That would be fine, but the addons won't download to it any more when I got a new laptop so I couldn't get any of my favorite ad and spam protection stuff (utterly erased all ads from youtube and other sites). Its a known glitch with an older version of Brave, which Dissenter is based on.

True. My pessimistic crystal ball showed me the best-case bad future.

In your scenario, Biden will soon DEMAND Congress pass inflation-offsetting hand-outs to the poor and middle class. (Most of them will simply be the Build Back Better crap he's not been able to get.) When the Republicans balk, he'll have another MAGA-bashing tool to use with The Media LIVs. Your scenario is going to happen on top of mine, sadly.

185 The Federal Reserve System is a collection of 12 banks that have one magical power. Unlike an ordinary bank that must fund its balance sheet with interest-bearing debt liabilities, the reserve banks can issue non-interest bearing liabilities -- dollars.

If interest rates really jack, the assets of a reserve bank can be become worth less than the value of those dollars. That's a kind of bankruptcy.

The real risk is that on the road to this bankruptcy, there's a run on that bank and a flight out of dollars. There's no good place for those dollars to go, but that's cold comfort.

Yes, Nixon did the right thing. But in 1965 the NVA had very little in the way of sophisticated air defenses and instead of bombing only military targets, we should have went in to eliminate any North Vietnamese communist leaders, party functionaries, party headquarters, any and all leadership targets, if and where we could locate them.

Russia and China would have been impressed.

So, unless the Dem's get scared enough to take the lead in pushing him out, we can look forward to 2 1/2 years of complete economic chaos and depression with absolutely no one in effective control on top.

Yes, you can. That is a very real possibility. When there is no more money to be squeezed out of the American people, then the federal largess will be a prime candidate for reduction, including all those cushy pensions. A lot of people are going to wonder how it all came crashing down.

240 Its exactly correct to use hindsight to make such judgements, and apply those lessons forward.

And its not unreasonable to reject any kind of affection for or respect for people who made endless stupid misstakes and established incredibly bad policy like wage and price controls, the EPA, and much more.

Nixon was the absolute epitome of RINOism and GOPe squish. He appointed both Rehnquist and Stevens as well as Warren Burger, who not only oversaw but voted for Roe v Wade.

He was just like the Republican politicians people here rightly despise today. The fact that he was less awful than his opponents did not make him a good man or good politician.

Eh, if the Russia-China partnership had gotten serious in the 70s we might still be paying for it today. I dislike Nixon's betrayal of Taiwan, but the correct path was purging the enemy at home before playing realpolitik abroad. Otherwise what's the point of showing up? The Bolshie pawns would just erase your victories when the Rats got back into power. I'll never forgive Reagan for not arresting Ted Kennedy for treason, and I only learned about Kennedy's feelers to the Soviets during the Trump era.

247 Good News from the Box Office this weekend:

Lightyear coming in 20-30m below expectations looks like it may not even take top spot

And the writer of the article searches for all possible reasons for its failure (60m less than toy story 4) yet somehow leaves out one HUGE factor.

"There are a number of factors at play for this box office upset. The concept of Lightyear may have been a difficult one to sell to general audiences who may have been confused by the film's connection to the Toy Story brand. The other might be that it has only been three years since the release of Toy Story 4, making it the shortest gap between installments in any Pixar franchise. Disney's decision to send the latest three Pixar films to Disney+ may have impacted audiences' drive to see Lightyear, with them instead associating the brand with streaming and waiting for it to debut there while they feel they need to see Jurassic World Dominion in theaters."

Nixon wasn't that great a president, but he wasn't THAT bad either. He was president during a great social upheaval and he did the best he can. He was a patriot and he always had the best interests of the US in mind no matter what he did. They call him a crook, but I would take a man of his moral code any day over every president we've had since with the obvious exceptions of Reagan and Trump.

Nope.

"But they MEANT well" is for when politicians make lame gestures they KNOW won't work, but hey, let's do something SYMBOLIC to show we care."

Nixon had specific goals in mind when he decided to go to China and bring them into the fold. Things might not have worked out the way Nixon--and we-- had hoped--or they may have helped a little before they made things work or whatever, but all the moves he made regarding China--and the USSR for that matter--were well thought out. They weren't symbolic moves to show "he cared."

317 This started with Carter jogging. Maybe it started earlier, but this is how i remember.
Eisenhower or Johnson would have had massive cardiac events if they attempted to jog while president.

Gee, I wonder if those "cattle deaths" in Kansas had anything to do with, oh I dunno, nobody giving them, oh I dunno, SOME WATER?

Call me crazy and anti-science, but I'm 99.99% certain the cattle died from dehydration, not necessarily "heat."

I mean, you own cattle, you have to know they need Water to live, from time to time.

>Yesterday, I started mowing the lawn. Halfway thru, the wind kicked up, - temp went from mid 60s to 85. in about 15 minutes. I stopped drank some water, 15 minutes later, temp was up to 100. Wacky weather would have probably taken me down if I hadn't stopped.

322 Re: Watergate. A guy named Geoff Shepard who is an historian focused on Watergate was on Bannon's show this week and said that the Watergate prosecutor, I believe named Jawarski, met secretly with the Judge Cirrica eight times DURING the trial of some of the Watergate defendants. The uni-party was pulling this crap back then, too.

I'm sure Siraca had ties to Peter Rodino too.
And sure, it was the uniparty we know and love in it's embryonic form.
Nixon was neither truly "conservative" in the Reagan or Goldwater mode, nor a liberal as in the Rockefeller wing. He was the very definition of a moderate--and a loyal "party" man. It's no accident that Bob Dole, one of his staunchest defenders, openly wept at Nixon's funeral in 1994. He was cut from the same cloth.

What sickens me is that , for all the crimes of Obama and The Clintons and Biden and the rest of the Democrat-Media Complex, Watergate is still the "Gold Standard" for presidential corruption --- "A Constitutional Crisis!!!"--when it was small potatoes.

Posted by: JoeF. at June 18, 2022 04:23 PM (mR6Gs)

324 And despite Russian Collusion Hoax, The Big Steal and the J6 Operation and Railroading, the media and the Democrats are gearing up for "Watergate at 50" which has already begun and will last until August 2024--in the midst of the '24 election.

So Woodward and Bernstein and Richard Ben-Veniste and John Dean will get to kick Richrd Nixon one more time before they kick.

326 Nixon became most favorite President when he decide to send no more US troops over to The Land of Bad Things.
My unit was supposed to be deployed for convoy escort duty on Hwy 1.
When it was announced we would be training for convoy escort duty in Vietnam, a troop asked one of our Drill Sergeants, "Drill Sergeant, what is convoy escort duty?"
The Drill Sergeant replied, "Well, they put two MPs in a Jeep, one is the driver and the other operates an M60 on a pintel mount in the back of the jeep. These jeeps are positioned one at the head of the truck convoy and one at the tail of the convoy. Charlie tries to blow up the jeeps to stop the convoy, fix it in place and shoot it up.".
Yep. Nixon's my man.
