Why baby formula recipes are often old recipes in the USA

formullls.jpg

The ongoing baby formula crisis partially explained on NPR

Once again, I have been listening to NPR in the car so you don't have to. I caught part of an interview by NPR's Elissa Nadworny, speaking with Ron Belldegrun, CEO of ByHeart, a manufacturer of baby formula, "about his meeting with President Biden" to discuss the nationwide shortage and how to fix it. (Actually, it seems to have been a call with several manufacturers.)

You can listen or read the transcript at the link.

A couple of comments to start with: I have never heard of ByHeart baby formula. And people say "yeah" and "you know" a lot in NPR interviews.

This CEO also used a word that I had never heard before. "Incent". So I looked it up on Webster's online:

Incent:

transitive verb: incentivize

First Known Use of incent

1981, in the meaning defined above

It's interesting that now the government (or some other undefined entity) now needs to "incent' manufacturers instead of just getting out of their way.

I also find it remarkable that the President was the person chosen to speak in a conference call to this CEO and others about how to fix this baby formula shortage. But there were a few interesting things in this short, very informal interview:

NADWORNY:

President Biden said he didn't know about the baby formula shortage until April, but industry executives have said they anticipated that this would be a dire shortage back in February, when there was the voluntary recall of baby formula from a major manufacturer, Abbott. What was your reaction to the president's remarks?

BELLDEGRUN:

Look, I won't speak directly for, you know, the president or, you know, the administration specifically, but this was a surprise to a lot of people and a lot of parents. One of the biggest misconceptions of this space is that you would actually think there's a lot of choice. And any stakeholder would think that there's dozens of companies that are supporting this most important foundational food. But the reality is 90% of that shelf is from three brands that have dominated for decades. And every single new entrant in the last few decades has taken the same path, and that is to outsource to the one and only contract manufacturer in the country, utilize an expedited kind of generic path to market, which only really allows for incremental change based on old recipes and does not contribute new clinical research or new manufacturing because it's sort of all outsourced. So it's a much more fragile supply chain than I think a lot of people thought.

So current regulations and regulatory practices inhibit innovation and new investment. Perfect. Compare to pharmaceutical innovation and manufacture. Anything that triggers a new FDA product application is extremely expensive.

Remember that the current special incentives and protections for vaccine manufacturers came as a result of a crisis, too. Companies were exiting the market due to lawsuits. So vaccine manufacturers had to be "incented".

BELLDEGRUN:

. . . You know, this is sole-source nutrition for babies. . . . And so it's appropriately the most highly regulated food in the world, right? This is the only food that requires clinical studies, you know, FDA registration. We talked also about, you know, the supply chain bottleneck is a huge deterrent to new entrants - right? - because, you know, as I shared our own experience, you're sitting at a point in time and saying, hey, either I go and I effectively outsource to the one and only contract manufacturer, but then I need to rely on, you know, old recipes and old clinical research. And I can't - you know, it's sort of very restrictive to innovation.

Or you need to go out and acquire manufacturing facilities and, you know, do all internal R and D and run major clinical trials. So the barriers to entry in this category are enormous. And so for this to really be - you know, for the U.S. to really never again find ourselves in this situation, we need to incent more companies to do the work that we have done. And that was to forgo the outsource route and instead invest in manufacturing and clinical research. And that's important not just for shoring up a supply chain but also for advancing this really critical nutrition.

Okay. What would it take to do that without relying on special favors from government?

* * * * *

Fifth flight of baby formula from Europe

Operation Fly Formula

How humiliating is this? Operation Fly Formula????

The U.S. government is relying on Nestle's distribution channels to get formula out to the nation. Wonder if they had to incent the corporation to do this.

* * * * *

Are they doing all this on purpose?

If Biden Intended To Destroy America, What Would He Be Doing Differently?

Deliberate and intentional. Two words you can expect Republicans to utter a lot more as they make the case that what ails America now isn't an accident. It's Joe Biden's design."

That's how Just the News' John Solomon characterizes the shift in tone among Republicans in the runup to the midterm elections this fall. The leftist media is sure to attack this sort of language as crazy and dangerous QAnon conspiracy talk.

But ask yourself, what would Biden be doing differently if his goal was to purposely send the country into a tailspin?

He set off a 40-decade-high inflation spiral with his $2 trillion "rescue" plan. He exacerbated supply-chain problems by paying people not to work. He threw open the borders to millions of illegal immigrants. He needlessly kept COVID mandates and restrictions in place. He worsened shortages of baby formula and spiking gasoline prices. He encouraged foreign adversaries with his disastrous Afghanistan retreat.

In every instance, Biden has said he and his top officials were "caught off guard." In other words, his is pleading incompetence. The public has picked up on this, which is why most Americans now believe that "incompetent" is the word that best describes this president.

But incompetence doesn't do Biden justice. In every case, Biden knew, or should have known, what would happen if he pushed his policies. Yet he did so anyway. . .

What do you think?

1 This "when did Biden know" crap is stupid.

Either he knew and approved and should be impeached, or he is incompetent enough that he should be impeached.

2 All I know about the baby formula operation is that the so-called whistleblower was claiming things that almost certainly aren't true, and the claims that babies died from the formula is almost certainly not true either.

So they shut down a whole industry, for no good reason, and then had no plan in place to mitigate the damage.

It's almost as if starving babies and scaring the shite out of parents was the point.

Almost.

9 Biden didn't know and isn't running anything. He's 'John Gill' from ST:TOS. His administration and the Fed Leviathan is what is destroying the nation. For Our Own Good!

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.

10 The supply chain thing is a huge problem across most industries--the corpos all outsourced EVERYTHING, starting in the late 80s, to just a few (mostly overseas) companies that do the actual blue-collar type work of forging, molding, etc. Incredibly fragile. So it just took a little push for everything from cars and computers to toilet paper and baby formula to become scarce.

Towards the end of her life she was a despicable character. This is not unexpected among the Hollywood female stars of the past, but in Judy's case I think the copious amounts of pharmaceuticals that she ingested, first under duress, then voluntarily, had quite a bit to do with her personality change.

Kara McKinney highlighted the sinking of the Vasa almost 400 years ago in one of her Historical Spotlights (available on Rumble and almost always worth watching) this week. Part of the reason it sank is that the weight was distributed too high in the ship; very little wind was required to tip it far enough to take on water and be unable to right itself.

I've seen stories say this particular plant makes 40% of the formula in the US. Which if true is absurd.

In a rational world the FDA leadership that signed off on closing this facility would be brought before congress and asked what their plan was to mitigate the shortage, and when they said, "Oh that's not MY job" fired on the spot.

Also...*anyone* talking about the need to break up the apparent baby formula cartel? If one lone facility makes 40% of the market...

FFS, I'm so sick of people saying Biden did this. This has been the plan for decades. Biden has not been doing anything other than what people order him to do, because his brain has been degenerated to mush since at least summer of 2020. He's a puppet.

The World Economic Forum, the Deep State (Republicans and Democrats), the United Nations, the World Health Organization.

The Great Reset and "Build Back Better" has been their plan for decades. And you don't build back better until you destroy what is currently in existence.

Until people stop blaming the situation in the world on Biden and understand this is a global issue pushed by the organizations I listed, we're never going to have a chance to stop it.

Your helpful government bureaucrats warn that it is unsafe for you to make your own baby formula. Your baby is better off going hungry until you can find something after searching store shelves in a 200-mile radius and phoning all the pediatricians in your state.

I have one of those articulating wooden drawing figures beside my desk for practice. I generally just have the fellow standing at attention. I looked over and he wasn't. One arm across his face centered at the elbow and the other straight out the same direction. It took me a while, "he's dabbing!".

I didn't even know what a dab was until someone told me. But I know who did this, my daughter! Mischievous.

Several several years ago, I knew a couple who's baby couldn't digest any kind of milk product for a while after it was first born. They tried everything. I did that wrist thing for heated formula but it never worked for me. I don't have sensitive wrists or hands. Too much dish washing in my past. The only way was a thermometer or my lips. Formula tastes horrible. But the lips generally worked. Years of drinking scalding hot coffee meant my tongue and the inside of my mouth was are also insensitive. 106 This is probably "meh" news to you folks but there is a very serious domestic helium shortage going on since the early part of the year that is supposed to be over sometime early next year.

Seems a couple of government agencies got into a pissing contest and shut down a key facility responsible for helium a large percentage of the US helium supply.

Consumers of helium gas and liquid have had their supply cut to about 25% or less. Some of you might not be aware of the fact that MRIs use liquid helium to cool their superconducting magnets.

All this is due to the government being in control of a critical link in the supply chain and acting in a fashion that completely disregards the needs of consumers.

Again.

Some months back we were watching a (Netflix?) biopic about the designer Halston. My lasting impression of it was the lead character and nearly everyone else smoking cigarettes nearly incessantly.

It went on throughout to the point where I found it repellant and reminiscent of when my parents threw parties in the evening for their friends. We four young kids would be upstairs in our bedrooms trying to sleep and if we had to go to use the bathroom, we had to navigate a hallway of thick, thick, cigarette smoke.

If cars were invented today you would not be allowed to drive them. And I think the idiotic push for "autonomous vehicles" is all about trying to get there anyway.

It's my personal belief that if airplanes were invented just a half-century or earlier, in the 1800s and first overseas there wouldn't even be an FAA at the level we have today. The key would be to mass-produce them. Take someone's idea and spit out thousands of them. But it would have to be done before the administrative leviathan started to rise from the swamp to wrap its tentacles around all things.

Our granddaughter has been able to breastfeed our new great-granddaughter. At her baby shower, all her girlfriends that have had children gave breastfeeding advise; apparently there is a new sort of breast-pump that is the schizznit. It seems that the trend among the 20-something mommies is to go back to breastfeeding.

Of course this means that our granddaughter's boobages have gotten bigger, but that is a sacrifice her husband is willing to make!

Some producers like Steve Inman that had to wrangle with being banned all the time from the twats seem to have given it up and moved to Trump's thing recently. But I have never been there. Like you, I don't think it has the weight to draw people to it yet. But maybe someday it will. 🤷‍♂️

Also, I'm still undecided I like the format of short quips. I think it has been detrimental to thought and really only beneficial to propagandizing.

Posted by: illiniwek at June 11, 2022 12:24 PM (Cus5s)

The reason why Abbott has such a large chunk of the market is precisely BECAUSE the government cleared the field for them. They outlawed the import of formulas from other countries like Canada, Germany, Britain and france. They regulate the industry in THIS country to the point where startups and small market competitors is not possible.

Government action to "fix" the problem isn't going to help, when government created the problem in the first place.

I'm sure there is a whole host of steps to show compliance with the regulation. Show your recipes comply with safety regulations. Show your production processes produce a product that conforms with your compliant recipes. Show you have a quality system that tracks deviations and changes to the process to ensure they still comply and still conform. Lots of constant testing would be done even with a fully compliant operational factory. And then if everything is shut down every process has to be re-validated from the beginning. A mess.

Once started on this funny-money tour, the Fed didn't know how to stop or get off. The real question is "why did inflation take so long to show up?"

There's a reason many big corps these days jump on the Woke bandwagon so quickly. It's mostly a fascist system, where government decides who can and can't stay in business, based on a variety of strongarm tactics.

I don't doubt there are plenty of good FDA agents, just as there are plenty of good agents in all the three letter agencies, but government is a criminal enterprise. There were probably plenty of good mafia hit men who just wanted safe neighborhoods for their family and friends too.

The way I understand it, inflation isn't the increase in prices, it's the devaluation of the money, so there's always going to be a lag between when the government acts to increase the money supply, and it starts to hit the marketplace.

Look at her father.

DC has been run for many decades by people who more than anything believe in what George Herbert Walker Bush famously called a "new world order". Globalism. The letter behind their name was somewhat irrelevant. People tend to shrug it of or roll their eyes but the truth has been hiding in plain sight all along. These people do not truly believe in American exceptionalism and as Obama said we are just another country, nothing special.

Trump represented an existential threat to that way of thinking. For all his faults he absolutely and unabashedly loves the USA and knows we are indeed an exceptional country without peer. The only thing that can bring us down is ourselves which is where that meat puppet in the White House comes in. Trump truly believes in America first. They do not.

Socialism does not raise people. The only way to make us all equal is to lower the exceptional. That's exactly what's happening right now.

In a healthy economy a rising income and productivity balance the inflation.

When the money was handed out without regard to producing anything the money chased a limit supply of goods... demand and intentionally caused supply chain limits (no refineries to produce fuel for an increasing population for instance) we get run away inflation.

And, number two, the reason they're not drilling is they're buying back their own stock - which should be taxed, quite frankly - buying back their own stock and making no new investments.

They are aligned with their peers internationally and they all see those "below" them as a threat. General prosperity helps those below them. Accountability and a way to remove them from their positions threatens them. Belief in a higher power threatens them. The almightiness of government as a belief strengthens them. They are playing a game now to see if they can impoverish those below them enough to weaken them without causing enough breakdown that society becomes brutish enough that force rules over elderly lawyers.and stockholders. Pex vs copper:

I have a forty five year old home with copper plumbing and am quite handy with a torch. What I have figured out over the years is that certain locations with high flow are gonna tear up the copper. Replace with pex to the point where the flow divides. I have no clue whatsoever how long the pex will last. But looking at my age (yikes!) I think I'm good for the rest of my life.

Sharp corners in high flow locations are what I've learned are gonna take a beating. I guess it's all the particulate matter in water that causes the damage to the soft copper. I really don't know how pex will be any different. But it will be easier to replace if it fails.

351 To break the government-enforced baby formula oligopoly, why doesn't someone sell a packet of powdered nutrients and vitamins to be added to an old recipe for homemade formula?

Start advertising nutrients and vitamins, and the government exerts even more control over you. My favorite beer was killed because they put a bog-standard nutrition label on it (Yakima Brewing). ATF hounded the company to death after that.

It’s the same reason you don’t see much in the way of vitamin-fortified snacks. The government “discourages” it, by which they mean the regulators will kill your company with the death of a thousand cutsXXXcompliance agents if you try and are remotely successful.

Do not do that...just don't. If you want a quick and easy fix, just slip a thin bit of plastic (or paper) between the end of one of the batteries and the contact. I am assuming here that the batteries are in series.

It takes a moment, of course, but it will stop the battery drain.

354 I wondered if I could just turn one around so the batteries are +to+ and -to-.

Probably not a good idea. Battery “voltage” is almost literally just the difference between the number of electrons on one end vs. the other. The - end should have more electrons than the + end, causing electrons to flow from the minus (excess electron) to the + (deficient electrons).

Batteries not in use don’t necessarily lose charge at the same rate. This means that if you flip them, there might still be a voltage difference, and it might be in the wrong direction. That is, the two + ends (or the two - ends) might have different charges, causing electrons to move through the circuit. If they move the wrong direction through the circuit, and the circuit has no protection against that, it could damage the device.

Honestly, I don’t think it would, but I wouldn’t recommend finding out.

If I was a foreign agent I might just monitor who was going into the CIA parking lot every morning. I'm not a trained spy but that seems like a good idea to me.

The whole thing was a farce and Bush/Cheney allowed it to happen. I'll never forgive them for that.

358 Cheney's hatred of Trump seems truly psychotic.

There's a lot of that going around. DeNiro, Reiner, Midler are other examples. Kathy Griffin.
It's not about politics, it's personal.
Trump makes them lose sleep, drink, take drugs, whatever.
Even now, out of office, Trump haunts their dreams and is the star of their nightmares. No doubt all of them are seeing shrinks---in addition to their regular one---to deal specifically with Trump issues.
But they can be written off as Hollywood weirdoes.

Our problem here is that are millions of Americans just like them, people who will gladly pay $20 a gallon of gas or $20 for a hamburger or have millions of OTHER PEOPLE'S babies nearly starve or OTHER PEOPLE'S sons get killed in a war for Ukraine as long as they think not having Trump as president will help them sleep at night.

Our country is in an awful place right now and we won't get out of it for a long time. Those of us over 29--or on the cusp of it--may die never seeing another day of true Unified American Greatness.

Ordered my chicken to go, and sat at the bar to drink some Wild Turkey while I wait, as usual. It goes much deeper than that. What the Sussmann trial helped expose is that the Russia collusion crap wasn't just a Hillary production, it was perpetuated by the FBI, the Obama administration and private contractors and the media among others.

I know most are disappointed with the Sussmann trial outcome no matter how predictable a DC court decision is, me too, but I would urge all to read the trial transcripts and the exhibits. Jake Sullivan, Biden's NSA, was at the heart of this scam and he's still directing a large part of our foreign policy. The Epoch Times has all the documents.

OJ was acquitted too.

That's irrational, inflammatory, delusional and downright stupid. But it's given a fair, respectable airing by the media.
That is the problem. NOT that some asshole said it, but no one questions it. That signals that there must be something to it.

The Late Great Rush ( RIP) used to tell the story about Al Gore at the 1996 VP debate giving "props" to Jack Kemp ( supposedly an expert on racial matters because, as a former football player, he showered with blacks) for not being a racist like "the rest of the Republicans."

Kemp then chided Gore for the libel and then launched into a full-throated defense of GOP policies and how they enable blacks to rise out of poverty--as well as a detailed history of the GOP's historical mission as the party of Color-blindness and acceptance from it's earliest days under Lincoln.

Nah, just kidding.

Kemp looked at Gore and said, "Thank You."

If no one questions it, it's because it serves a political purpose, not because there's any truth. Yet, I agree that is the signal desired by the dems and their media. I never saw that Trump's tweets were even a tiny bit as mean as the "racist" slur.

He told me if would be a good idea if conservatives didn't get all their political information from Fox News. I said I have never listened to Fox news and haven't had a working TV since 2011 and so I don't listen to any TV news now. I didn't tell him I occaasionally listen to bits of clips from Tucker Carlson. I also said that apparently FOX news had a program celebrating a family whose daughter age 11 or so was "transitioning" to be a boy and they had known from age two that she was really a boy and that this didn't sound conservative to me. It's good to laugh.

387 Most of us still live with the happy mythos of the "Sovier refugee astounded by variety of US grocery store." I've harped for years on the disturbing fact that most of that variety is in appearance only. There may be 50 "brands" of chocolate on the shelf, but they're all from three big companies, with a blinding admixture of new and improved added ingredients and packaging. This is not free market competition.

In the actual store, grocery companies charge fees up front to have your product displayed on their shelves, and operators like "Audrey's Marinade" or "Pappy's Sassafras Tea" are hard-put to even get in there.

391 "What do you think?"

Absolutely deliberate and intentional, and I'm glad the GOP is finally catching on, even if it took The Stupid Party way too long to do so.

But like Winston Smith asked "I understand how, I don't understand why". The answer is simple, but more than O'Brien's response "power".

The answer is that we have an electorate that has bought completely into the environmental religion. This religion holds that man is a pestilence upon the planet, and that we must amend for our sins by living in poverty, or better yet, eliminating most of our numbers.

They are the ones who tell us "you'll own nothing and you'll be happy", all the while eating bugs and weeds, suffering without A/C, living in rented housing where your corporate landlord tells you you can't smoke (at least tobacco) inside or keep a firearm. You'll have to get permission to spend anything you are still allowed to earn under their digital currency regime. And your mobility will be limited to places they let you go, since you won't even have a car--electric or otherwise.
