Ace of Spades Pet Thread, May 21

Dog cartoonyy.jpg

Courtesy someone whose nic MisHum can't remember

Good afternoon and welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. Ask someone for a treat, kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

Speaking of the "civilized world", we have a piece on dog psychology today: Why dogs are very good boys

There's something about dogs that truly makes them man's best friend. Our loyal, slobbering pets rescue those in need and are extremely social, but until recently we never figured out why dogs and humans get along so well.

By analyzing DNA samples taken from a variety of dogs and wolves, vonHoldt and Monique Udell, a scientist from Oregon State University who studies animal cognition and collaborated on this research project, identified four mutations that seemed to influence social behavior in those dogs. In particular, they found mutations on a gene called WBSCR17, which vonHoldt says she studied back when she was working on her doctoral thesis, and two transcription factor genes.

"We found that these mutations were frequent in many populations and breeds, possibly suggestive of their role in personality variation," says vonHoldt.

In humans, when that gene is deleted from one of two paired chromosomes, it can lead to a condition called Williams-Beuren Syndrome, which involves stunted social development and overly-friendly behavior, not unlike the traits that separate good little pups from vicious wolves and coyotes.

VonHoldt explains that they found a great deal of variability in regards to this mutation when they looked at wolf genetics, but the mutation was almost entirely absent in coyotes. "Some wolves are dog-like in their degree of sociality, while some dogs may also display more wolf-like or less social behaviors," she says. The differences among wolves could explain how domestication occurred, with friendlier animals living in a closer proximity to people and passing those social genes down to their pups, vonHoldt explains.

Ever seen a pet coyote? Next up for study: cats.

So what went wrong here, Hadrian the Seventh?

Meet The PetMorons

Here are some temporary pets, sort of:

wreatheggg.jpg

I've been meaning to take this Christmas wreath down, but we're slackers here at Chez Publius. Meanwhile, a bird decided to build a nest in it!

There are 4 eggs. They have dark speckles on a grayish background, and are about 1/2" long. Can anyone identify them from the attached photo?

Thanks!
Miley, the Duchess

A nice surprise!

fenwayyy.jpg

You've shown Fenway a few time. This was just too good of a pic to not share.

Sadly, Fenway has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and only has a few short months left with me. I keep telling myself she is 12 yrs old and what a great journey it has been. But it is a gut punch none the less. Working on a couple of "best day ever" days with her while she can still get around comfortably.

Anyways, wanted to share this happy moment.

Our Country is Screwed

Thanks for sharing this beautiful photo, so we can remember the good times with you.

Murphy, my best friend and hiking buddy, met a too-early end a few days ago, due to an undiagnosed heart issue (which we couldn't have done much about anyway, had we known). As tribute to his memory, I attach a couple of pics from which I hope you will choose.

1. As a puppy, with his drill sergeant

2. On a hot day in his middle years, enjoying the water gift of a nice local farm owner who let us traverse his fields on many happy hikes

3. Last summer, on his favorite Massachusetts beach, after once again scaring away the enemy seals.

We miss him horribly, of course, and I hope we meet again some day for a nice walk.

Thanks for the Pet thread!
MTF

What a terrible shock to lose your buddy! The photos make a wonderful pet essay, not just about Murphy, but also about a great older dog and a kindly farm owner. You will have some great memories.

23 Very proud of my boy kitteh . I was out for our walk with Bogie and Bacall when we crossed paths with a small terrier that the owner had off leash. The dog immediately went for Bacall chasing her back to my garage about 40 yards away . Before I could catch up , Bogie had passed me and went to protect his sister and blocked the dog from going after Bacall. Good big brother.

27 I know of precisely one pet coyote. Lady who found a ten-day-old cub AND had whatever qualifications to let animal management allow her to keep him. Plus living in Outer Wyoming helped. Charlie was a total hoot, full of mischief, and completely under the paw of her big orange cat. The blog is at http://www.dailycoyote.net/ with many cool photos. 28 RE: That Christmas wreath with the eggs

For several years, I had a wreath hanging on the outside of my house. It had a bird nest on it that was used from year to year. Then I decided to take it down. When I did, I peeked inside and saw three baby robins! Whoops!

I managed to replace the bird's nest in the wreath and kept an eye on the robins from time to time as they grew. Eventually, they left the nest and I took the whole thing down...

30 Handsome devils this week!

I'm inclined to think some cats may lack a similar gene to the one that makes for more wolf-like behavior. Both of the pure black cats I've known have been agreeable, adaptable, and quite friendly. Of course all my feline companions have had the friendliness quality, or they wouldn't have been my companions, but some stand out in that regard.

Naw, axes get buried over there. Like to think I got a small glimpse once visiting a Matilija Canyon pal. No one home but the pets. He was basically the Ventura county bird club then, the phone book company thought so! Lots of rescue parrots. Any way, here was a rare "thick bill" parrot once native to the U. S., standing on the head of a cat, both eating crunchies out of the same bowl. Must be heaven!

Most of my cats have vanished when strangers came over. Wolf the giant black cat got to the point later in his life that he simply remained where he was when someone came in. It was amusing to see people who were frightened of him, and those who were impressed.

Marie-Antoinette the regal (and smart) black cat came trotting right up to new people, as if thinking "Well! Someone new to worship me!"

48 Also at the ranch, a couple of Silkie chickens pulled a fast one on my friend. One of them disappeared for about a month and my friend figured she'd been taken by a coyote.

Turns out that the two female Silkies had figured out that my friend was taking their eggs every morning to eat for breakfast. So they both laid a clutch of eggs off somewhere hidden (away for their pens), and one of the Silkies would show up each night to be locked up in her pen and would lay an egg each night, while the other one (who wasn't eaten by a coyote after all) was secretly sitting on both hens' eggs.

Last week suddenly on consecutive days each of the Sneaky Silkie Hens just strolled by my friend with first 6 and then another 7 chicks walking behind their respective mothers.

The result is 13 new Silkie chicks and a great laugh at how crafty those two hens were to keep us thinking that there was only one of them and no chicks in the works.

55 Toby dog has been limping on his right hind again. Last time dad took him to the vets and they just gave him some pills for pain and inflammation. So this time I just put him on devils claw capsules in addition to the MSM and tumeric he was getting just routinely. That mixture kept Ole going strong until he had a stroke or heart attack and died in his sleep with an arthritic back after an injury. I think Toby keeps overdoing but is limping a bit less and the mixture is certainly keeping from being stiff and sore after tripoding at a good clip while playing.

Probably one of the brown tabby girls. They all look so much alike in the pics it's hard to choose one that way. Vicki, the breeder lady, is not one to invite any and all to her home (she raises these little monsters underfoot as if they were her pets), but Miss Linda and I have been to her place twice over the years. I hope she'll invite us so I can observe and handle the kittens, and see how they react to me. Maybe the black torbie. I dunno.

I'd take Victor, the brown tabby with the white jabot and paws, in a second -- but I suspect she plans to have him sire some kittens. Berendey from Ukraine is slated to be a stud, I'm sure. He is spectacular.

If she has a young adult cat, like Chekov was, who needs a real home, I'd actually sort of prefer that. Kittens can be exhausting. Chekov's aunt Tatiana drove me nuts.

79 Sorry about Loretta, Notsothoreau. Monday is going to be hard. I've been there.

80 Victor looks nice. Sweet, even.

Berendy looks bas ass.

81 "VTK, that second try worked. Bravo looks as if he's wearing military gear and preparing for an assault on a fortress!"

He has some gear.

82 If she has a young adult cat, like Chekov was, who needs a real home, I'd actually sort of prefer that. Kittens can be exhausting. Chekov's aunt Tatiana drove me nuts.

I've known 3 Siberian cats well, and all 3 have had their troubles, but they were all attached to people and quite smart.

83 It's a good thing that Murphy could read.

84 Can't help you with the eggs. They frankly look similar to ones I buy at discount at Marketbasket (a northern New England food chain).

H'mmm.

Sorry about Murphy and Fenway. Great looking animals. It took me at least three years to get over the loss of my Aussie who looked she could have been a sister of Stella.

85 Fenbendazole, which is used to worm dogs, might be useful in treating brain cancers in humans. But we can't test it, of course.

86 Murphy looks like Dana Perino's dog, a Vizsla.
Posted by: redridinghood

That's why I asked above, he is the spitting image of my long departed and beloved Vizsla, Prinz! His heart attack came with no precursor warning, and I still miss him decades later!

If we are not careful, this whole off patent off label medication thing will get out of hand and impede the righteous flow of graft!

88 Sharkman,

What a great story!!

That would make an excellent children's book, though the kids would probably never gather (or eat) eggs again!

It would also be fun for kids because Silkie chickens look like a giant ball of cotton with feet.

90 Sorry to miss the thread today, but what a great pet thread it is.

91 Thanks everyone for the good wishes. Murphy was a twelve year old Vizsla and, like all Vizslas, was a puppy almost until he was ready to go. In fact we had the chance to walk for a couple hours together the day before he left us and he (sort of) chased some deer, so his illness was a shock.

Best wishes to Fenway and all our pets! In these dark days, animals are a great comfort.

92 Condolences to the pet lovers' losses. Always makes me misty-eyed because it hits close to home.

93 Condolences to those who have lost their special friends. We had to put our wee little girl down a few weeks ago and it's always very difficult.
