The Morning Rant: GOPe “Budget Hawk” Who Never Cut Spending Condemns Trump For Not Cutting Medicare; Plus Other Stuff, Including “Fish Gravy”

Paul Ryan & AEI Are Not Our Allies

Paul Ryan - AEI.JPG

This disgusts me, and reminds me of what complete and total frauds the GOPe “budget hawks” were when we trusted them with power. It’s also a reminder that my contempt for the American Enterprise Institute is well warranted, since Paul Ryan is a “visiting fellow” at this grift pretending to be a conservative think tank.

Paul Ryan griped that Trump didn't pursue cuts to Medicare and other safety-net programs [Business Insider 4/27/2022]

"He and I fought about Medicare and entitlement reform all the time," the former GOP House speaker said Wednesday at a book event at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. "It became clear to me there was no way he wanted to embrace that."

Paul Ryan served in Congress for 20 years. During that time, there was a four-year span (2003 – 2007) that Republicans held the House, the Senate, and the White House, which were all led by Paul Ryan’s type of Republicans: House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, and President George W. Bush.

They were able to push through tax cuts, of course, but when it came to spending cuts, somehow all those GOPe budget hawks just couldn’t find any scissors to slash the funding for toxic recipients such as NPR or the National Endowment for the Arts.

Yet Ryan has the audacity to condemn Trump for not cutting Medicare?!

Paul Ryan also served as Speaker of the House for four years during the Obama presidency. Under the Constitution, he and his fellow House Republicans had the power of the purse and could choose not to fund Obama’s spending priorities. He chose not to use that power.

Again, Ryan has the audacity to condemn Trump for not cutting Medicare?!

And by the way, where is Ryan’s condemnation of Barack Obama? Just kidding. They’re part of the same uniparty team. Ryan’s role was to star as the controlled opposition who would graciously lose to Obama, then fight tooth and nail with conservative reformers like Trump.

The biggest thing to remember about big-government frauds like Ryan is that they used the “budget hawk” gimmick as a weapon to stop conservative goals from being obtained.

Border Fence? Nope. Budget hawks said we couldn’t afford it.

Cut wasteful spending such as public radio or foreign aid to countries that hate us? Nope. Budget hawks said those were meaningless drops in the bucket unless entitlements were also cut.

Legislate conservative social issues? Nope. Budget hawks said we couldn’t do anything socially conservative until we addressed the budget crisis.

They never actually wanted to address “the budget crisis” or reduce the size of government. Ryan and his fellow budget hawk phonies were there to protect big government and all its taxpayer-funded parasites from real conservatives, while also ensuring that none of the promises they made to social conservatives to get elected were ever enacted by GOP majorities.

Real conservatives still desperately want to see government spending slashed. But if that’s not going to happen, we’ll take a Trump who will at least advance the rest of our agenda, unlike the Paul Ryans of this world who spent 20 years in Congress in a false flag endeavor to impede conservative goals, all under the pretense of being a “budget hawk.”

Paul Ryan condemning Donald Trump’s legislative agenda is among the most flattering things I’ve ever heard about Donald Trump.

Speaking of Faux-Conservative Think Tanks

Speaking of AEI, I was pondering the significant election victories that conservatives had in last week’s Texas school board elections, and how a few individuals like Christopher Rufo and Ryan James Girdusky, acting almost alone, have done more in a short time to advance the conservative cause than Heritage, AEI, and every legacy conservative publication have accomplished in decades.

Ace commented this week on NBC’s meltdown about conservatives flooding the polls in Texas to defeat leftists in school board races. Mr. Girdusky’s 1776 Project is recruiting candidates, training them, and helping their campaigns, with great success.

1776 Project PAC.JPG

In the battle against Critical Race Theory, Christopher Rufo is the most prominent person in America, aggressively identifying, exposing, and fighting back against CRT. Without Mr. Rufo, Virginia would probably still be under Democrat control.

His diligence in exposing the cover up of transgender sex crimes in Loudoun County schools, and the effort of those in charge to criminalize parental pushback, caused Virginia voters to flood the polls and flush Democrats completely out of power in Virginia.

He also played a major role in turning public opinion against Disney in its battle against Governor DeSantis in Florida. Rufo is bringing about actual on-the-ground conservative victories.

This is an incredibly flattering hate-headline from The New Yorker about Mr. Rufo.

How a Conservative Activist Invented the Conflict Over Critical Race Theory

“Invented.” Heh.

You’d never see such a story from the liberal media about Heritage or AEI, because those conservative think tanks aren’t actually trying to get the conservative base to fight the left at the ballot box. At best, AEI and Heritage are just trying to get their left-wing friends to tone down their rhetorical excesses, while explaining to conservative donors why we must constantly surrender to the left in the name of “principles.”

Fish Gravy

Let’s finish up today with something a little lighter. As I’ve documented before, Mrs. Throckmorton has a charming habit of creating malaprops, mixed metaphors, or other accidentally funny word usages.

She had brunch with girlfriends yesterday, and told me afterward that the Eggs Benedict were served with “sockeye gravy” rather than hollandaise sauce. Sockeye is a salmon. (I’m guessing it was actually red-eye gravy, which is cream gravy made with the drippings of fried breakfast meats.)

I told her that I prefer mackerel gravy or flounder gravy to sockeye gravy, especially on eggs, but that’s probably just my Gulf Coast bias.

If y’all have any favorite fish gravy recipes, be sure to send them to Mr. CBD for his Sunday food thread.

Have a great weekend!

4 Paul Ryan could have sent individual budget and appropriations bills to Trump's desk that massively curtailed the administrative state and brought down discretionary spending.

He did not.

He heralded several CRs through Congress at the same elevated spending levels.

The way to "cut" entitlements is to cut the fraudulent use of them. Nobody receiving the entitlements, even the ones committing fraud, believe themselves to be committing fraud. It's always "somebody else". So as long as it's someone else's ox being gored, the entitlement crowd will be happy.

That's how you do it.

Neither did you. Your grand budget plan did nothing to deal with the weapon of mass fiscal destruction that is Medicare. Your budget plan made some modest adjustments to Social Security and then made wild assumptions about deficit reduction. It was never backed up properly and would never have been as valuable as you implied. You're a cheater and a phony.

But you know what, Lyin' Ryan? Trump didn't run as a budget hawk. You did. Trump was down with some big spending if it achieved his goals, and was pretty clear about being a spendthrift. You, however, were also down with big spending but unlike Trump, you *did* lie about it. Like Boehner before you, you never once refused to go to the CR dance and demand an actual budget with actual outlays, let alone actual cuts. You don't have a leg to stand on.

117 IMHO, SS and Medicare should be the last programs cut.

However, if you do want to cut them then cut everything and I do mean everything else in the Federal gov't first. Like a 10-20 cut off the top. Along with massive firings, followed up with the same sort of extreme pyramidalization that the military went with years ago - up or out. And pensions only after you'd stayed in and moved up for, say, 10-12 years.

Also, make it easy to fire gov't workers.

Then and then only, you could make a good case for cutting SS and Medicare if it was needed, which I kinda doubt. But, first thing out of the box you're going to target the retired on fixed incomes??? How stupid is that?

Medicare is bankrupting the system. Fraud aside, Medicare would still bankrupt the system. Social Security in its entirety aside, Medicare would still bankrupt the system.

SSDI fraud is an appalling mess and needs to be dealt with and it *can* be dealt with by auditing the states. The states themselves are the primary driver of SSDI fraud (if they can get you on federally-funded disability, you exit the state-funded welfare rolls), and it's easier to choke 50 throats than millions of individuals. That shit could be cut off quickly if they wanted to.

But Medicare is another beast. That can't be fixed without reforming the entire medical system and getting the price down by at least 50%. Nobody has any appetite to do that, at any level, public or private. Medicare is bigger than itself and involves an industry that makes up - absurdly and terribly - more than 20% of our GDP. Nobody will touch it. It will grow until it eats us.

The next 7% - 8% is interest on the debt. That leave 4% - 5% for Congress, WH, FBI, CIA, NEA, OSHA, NLRB, NTSB, BLM, BIA, etc, etc, etc, and foreign aid which is about 1% (or 20% of the 5%).
NPR and NEA aren't even rounding error in the federal budget.

The US Navy will scrap nine warships worth $3.2 billion - despite some being just three years old - because their technology is already obsolete.

Anti-submarine systems on the Freedom-class combat warships, four of which were commissioned in 2019 and 2020, 'did not work out technically', the Navy's operations chief said.

Admiral Michael Gilday asked Congress to sign off on the scrapping, which will save the Navy $391 million.

Fusion, Perkins Coie etc weren't hired to "dig up dirt" on Trump. They were hired to manufacture evidence of Russian collusion about Trump. The problem with (and intent of) the Fox framing is that it becomes a ho-hum about whether political operatives "dig up dirt" --well of course they do Virginia.

At this point given irrefutable evidence that normal internet traffic was misrepresented as clandestine "communication" between Trump and Russia, to describe this as anything other than the MANUFACTURE of false evidence is to be part of the conspiracy.

220 The thing most people don't understand about SS (Old Age portion of Old Age, Survivors, Disability Income OASDI) is that is has two mutually exclusive goals: Individual equity and Social Adequacy. The US's program is currently tilted more towards individual equity than most other nations' programs. (Canada is more toward social adequacy than the US and Quebec has a separate program from the other provinces that is tilted even more.) I believe all of Europe's Old Age pension systems are tilted more to adequacy than the US's.
Basically, a rich person in the US will "earn" about a zero percent return on their SS taxes and a poor person can earn about 15% return on their taxes.

We're a rising nation of pussies. I've got a kid in high school who's involved in extracurricular activities (marching band) and has friends in sports. Kids today are being raised by 'helicopter parents' and are afraid of toughness and discipline. They're quitting things in high numbers because 'the coach is a bitch' or 'they're too tough on us.'

Throw the fact that everyone must smoke pot and you're well on the way to 'everything is a disability' and full on government teat.

315 Not that this costs any taxpayer money, but for handicap parking stickers, we've defined disability down so far that we have 20 people in the office with the stickers. Not a one is in a wheelchair, or uses a walker, or even a cane, or has a significant limp. But apparently they get very tired walking all of 200 feet to the building.
We're becoming a sad nation.

We did that b/c we lost religion as a society...and when you lose that, everyone is motivated to "get theirs", not worrying about what the effect truly is.

I tell my kids that by not falling in this trap, they'll all be employable by every global company on the planet who won't want to put up with "yet another accommodation" request. Multiple of my kids could have gone the same crutch path, but we have a truly disabled/never gonna be able to work niece, and it's much easier to be bitter about her not getting the help and aid she needs b/c everyone else who "has a hurt pinky level" problem sucks up the money and the resources when you yourself aren't playing the same game.

It's pretty much accepted in cities in the South those parking places are almost exclusively for the children and grandchildren of elderly black people who can't easily leave their house and almost never ride in the car with them.

337 Here's another idea for you: how about removing restrictions that keep those on disability from working? In other words, let them keep their medical and benefits. My cousin is on dialysis. He's trying to get a kidney transplant. Right now, everything is covered if and when that happens. But if he works, he loses the medical and current benefits. There's no way he can make that up.

If you want to make it so they can work and maybe cut back on cash payments a bit, that would work. But you have to leave an incentive to work.

342 220 The thing most people don't understand about SS (Old Age portion of Old Age, Survivors, Disability Income OASDI) is that is has two mutually exclusive goals: Individual equity and Social Adequacy.

Posted by: Darin Zimmerman at May 13, 2022 11:39 AM (95NE/)

Not quite sure what those terms mean, Individual Equity vs. Social Adequacy (will search them out).

And assuming your percentage of return figures are in nominal (i.e. inflationary) vs. real (non-inflationary) dollars, Imma gonna guess we're all big losers when it comes to SS returns.

I could imagine someone who's primary motive is the federal budget not getting on his side. However, Paul Ryan isn't just some guy who wants the budget balanced. He was Speaker of the House for two years under a Republican president. All budget bills start in the House. He was uniquely situated to start the process of bringing the budget in line, and he just kept on with the CRs.

So, I can imagine such a person, but Paul Ryan is not such a person. Paul Ryan sucks.

RUFKM? Having your house or apartment broken into, that would feel pretty violating. Getting robbed, or mugged more so. Assaulted, assuming its not a BS charge stemming from a mutual fistfight, raped or a family member murdered, those crimes violated you.

But someone drove off in your car? You bet I'd be angry about it and about a society that ignores the crime and thus encourages it but IMO that aint a particularly violating crime.

It was obvious from election night when that fat idiot Stirewalt called Arizona for Biden well before the race was decided that Fox was all in for Biden over Trump. The younger Murdochs are quite woke and have steadfastly refused to acknowledge that at the very least there were enormous irregularities during the 2020 election.

Still, I think Tucker is too big to stop if he wanted to do something. Look at all the people he has chased off that network. He makes them far too much money to force him to bury a legitimate story. There has to be something else.

It's a deadly stabbing instrument that won't get you charges. Carry a four inch folding blade or a concealed paring knife in WA, you might catch charges. I'm not being hyperbolic. A 16 year old got a "carrying a dangerous weapon" charge that went all the way to the state supreme court over a paring knife in her pocket. She didn't even brandish it. State v. Myles

Compare that to an eight inch screwdriver with a big beefy handle. Nobody gets charges for that.

I saw a homeless guy the other day with an actual bindle. The bindle handle was a baseball bat. When I used to go to Seattle for work, I regularly saw homeless guys with big screwdrivers in their hands.

464 Red eye gravy is red because it is made with tomatoes or tomato sauce and/or ketchup. It's not 'creamy' you yankee hosers.

466 Social Security. That wonderful "entitlement" created in the hope you would die before being able to receive your own money back, since eligibility age was set above the average life expectancy at the time.
Posted by: Greyman27 at May 13, 2022 11:14 AM

This is a common misunderstanding of life expectancy statistics. Yes, average life expectancy was less than 65 when SS was enacted, but that was because so many people died in infancy or early childhood. If you survived childhood, you were very likely to live well into your 70s and collect SS for a number of years. Think about.it....DId your grandparents all die before age 65?

467 Hell, there are outright liberal leftists who have done more to fight the CRT cult than AEI and Heritage. Not just James Lindsey, Helen Pluckrose (also a liberal and not even American) et al.. I have seen actual Marxists fight with more vigor.

Irony of ironies and yes, it's an in-house fight between the old-school working class and wealthy colonizers, but still. You have to give the Marxists fighting at least that much. You could even say they fight the CRT cult with as much fire as the NeverTrump GOPe grifters fight actual conservatives.

468 I know late, but I've donated to the 1776 group. I have not received any spam e-mails for more money unlike Trump and the GOP. That's because they are not run by idiots.

470 They can kill my SS and Medicare so long as they are willing to pay me back every dollar I paid into those programs, with 10% interest.

Until then, they better concentrate on entitlement programs that pay out benefits to people who never paid in.
