Gun Thread: Puppies and Kittens! Puppies and Kittens!! [Weasel]

p and k 1 scaled.jpg
A Calming Photo of a Puppy and Kitten

A good strategy for dealing with difficult and stressful times is to focus for a moment on something soothing and calming. Some call it meditation or Zen, while others refer to it as finding their Happy Place. Whatever you call it, what could be any more relaxing and fun than puppies and kittens? Puppies and kittens are pretty much the best, amiright?! Let's hear it for puppies and kittens, and find a way to de-stress below, shall we?

OK. That didn't last long.

Virginia
When we left off in the Virginia discussion last week, leftists had filed a number of anti-gun bills for consideration. Here's a link to the list from last Sunday. With a Democrat majority it was almost certain some would pass, and some did. They are:

S.B. 35 - Control of firearms by localities; permitted events
S.B. 69 - Purchase of handguns; limitation on handgun purchases
S.B. 70 - Firearm transfers; criminal history record information checks

Several bills were rolled into the three shown above. Specifically; S.B 615, 450, 505 and 506 were rolled into S.B. 35, S.B. 22 was rolled into S.B. 69, and S.B. 12 was rolled into S.B. 70. The final legislative language can be found at the docket for tracking legislation.

You will note among those passed that S.B. 16 and S.B. 240 are not listed. S.B. 16 - Prohibiting sale, transport, etc., of assault firearms and certain firearm magazines was pulled from consideration by its sponsor, and S.B. 240 - Firearms; removal from persons posing substantial risk is apparantly in real trouble, being passed for consideration by the senate three days in a row. So with S.B. 16 dead, and S.B. 240 on life support, now the retards in the House of Delegates get a whack at this, with more than forty bills for consideration. Some of these were introduced by Republicans and are good, which means I think they stand little chance of success. Here's a link to the whole list courtesy of our friends at the Virginia Shooting Sports Association (VSSA). In many cases the House bills are some version of the Senate bills. A legislative recap can be found here.

The biggie among these, in my opinion, is HB 961 Assault firearms, certain firearm magazines, etc; prohibiting sale, transport, etc. This is the House version of S.B. 16 with the addition of a registration provision, which our despicable idiot Governor thinks is a great compromise. I understand this bill could be in trouble too, as there are a small number of Democrat Delegates who aren't convinced it's such a great idea. Whether it's because they own firearms themselves, or because they're from districts which are predominently pro-gun, remains to be seen. One thing I think is certain if tomorrow's Lobby Day in Richmond goes bad it could give them the political cover they need to change their positions. This is a very fluid situation, and we'll know more after the rally on Monday and as the House bills are advanced. Stay tuned.

In Other Developments
There is other news from Richmond since we got together last week. On Wednesday, Governor Dipshit declared a state of emergency in the Commonwealth which is in effect through Tuesday. As expected, he invoked a measure prohibiting weapons on the captitol grounds where the main events for the rally are to be held. Gun rights groups quickly filed to overturn the order, however, these efforts have been denied by the courts.

Here's the weapons-free zone created around the capitol. The area has been surrounded by chain link fencing with a single entrance and few exits.

va capitol NGZ v3.png

Open and legally concealed carry is allowed as usual outside the shaded area. The VCDL sent this message on Saturday regarding the cordoned-off area and the event in general, and this update earlier today.

If you will be in Richmond tomorrow, please be cool, be safe, and be aware of what's going on around you. If someone wants to start some shit, find a cop.

Puppies and kittens...? Anyone?

OK. I'm tired of talking about Virginia. Let's talk about guns!!

******

The Virginian Dragoon
Before it was lost in a tragic recreational boating accident that was totally not my fault, this example of the Interarms Virginian Dragoon, chambered in .44 Magnum, graced your ol' pal Weasel's gun safe.

VD 1 scaled.jpg

vd 2 scaled.jpg

The Virginian Dragoon, patterned after the Colt Single Action Army, was made by Interarms, then a Virginia company between 1973 and 1984. These guns are very solid and well made, and are a lot of fun to shoot. This revolver is engraved with the Virginia state motto “Sic Semper Tyrannis“ on the bottom of the grip frame. Nice touch!

vd3 scaled.jpg

An excellent history of the weapon and it's production, by Lee Martin, can be found here, and a review by Guns.com can be found here. Are there any other Colt Single Action Army fans out there?

Oh shit! I wasn't going to talk about Virginia!

******

Virginia Gun Sales
I suppose it should really come as no surprise that gun sales in Virginia are up. Like way up. Like 200% up if this article in the Washington Examiner is to be believed.

So how about you all? What would you be doing if you lived in Virginia right now? Would you be buying guns, ammo, magazines, or all of the above?

This week (well, actually about 2 weeks ago, but who's counting) our pal Daddybb sent in a few pictures of a range day with his new Taurus.

My Christmas pistol was a Taurus G3 - try one it’s fantastic at $250. These are from my first trip to shoot it, all shot at 40 feet.

If you have a question you would like to ask Gun Thread Staff offline, just send us a note and we'll do our best to answer. If you care to share the story of your favorite firearm, send a picture with your nic and tell us what you sadly lost in the tragic canoe accident. If you would like to remain completely anonymous, just say so. Lurkers are always welcome!

That's it for this week - have you been to the range?

This weekend I did not get a chance to get to the range. It is a 3 day weekend for me and I went and blew money on a new couch and material to make a new computer. I will make some time to give my Sig a nice cleaning as it went over the 1,000 round mark last weekend.Oh, and I did buy a scope for my future rifle, a Nikon PROSTAFF P5 4-16x42SF Matte BDC.

37 As I related last week someone at work gave me 5.56 pistol upper. So I needed a lower. They guy who gave me the upper is going total bling on his as .300 blackout pistol. Like some crazy $270 BCG.

So I am going the opposite on my pistol. Cheap as you can go. Palmetto State Armory stealth lower (it has no stamping on the magwell making it stealth and $10 cheaper than the one with PSA logo stamped). $119 plus tax and shipping. It will be $20 for transfer at local gun store with veterans discount. Got some iron sights from AMZN for $11 and a reflex red dot for $19.

I've got mags.

It is totally an auxiliary gun that will likely fall out of the canoe so....

I have the 12 gage (1897 lever action clone of a winchester and a double barrel coach gun). I still need the lever action in the .357/.38 to fill out my cowboy action shooting ensemble, but I'm waiting for a sale.

I renewed my range membership. (200 and some bucks , for unlimited guns, unlimited time, and I can bring a guest for 15 dollars for all day). Not too shabby. they only have up to a 200 yard range. If they had 800 and 1000 yard, I'd be in pew pew heaven.

91 Hello!

Though most of my guns are lying at the bottom of Lake Lansing, two have escaped the watery grave and are currently for sale on gunbroker.

One is a Luger, which some here have fired. Repeated cleaning and use has gotten it pretty squared away.

I'm also selling a very nice C96 Mauser Broomhandle, which I picked up on consignment.

Both have been refinished but the serial numbers match.
No link, but if you head over there, I'm sure you'll find them. They close on Wednesday. No bids on the Luger, only one on the C96.

As to why I'm selling them, it's simply a matter of balancing the collection. I have another C96 that I've been rebuilding and it requires additional parts to get it finished.

Similarly, I thought I'd enjoy the Luger, but I find it kind of "meh." I'm weird like that. I also don't like Glocks or Colt 1911s, so it makes sense that I'd also dislike another iconic firearm. Moving the Luger opens a path for other gubs I might like better.

Bought more ammo this week, cupboard is getting full. Talking with BIL about getting a shipping container and burying in the side of the ridge to store . . . stuff.
Love the old SAAs! About 20 years back I bought a clone (.45 Colt) made by United States Firearms. They bought Colt's old equipment in Hartford and hired a lot of Colt's craftsmen when the original concern moved overseas from the Blue Dome. The gun is better made than the original SAA, IHMO. Unfortunately it turned out that USFA couldn't make guns of that quality at the price they charged, and went out of business after a few years. Damned shame.

95 Well, might as well share the good and the bad.

I went back to IDPA after around 20 years. And I got a DQ. I'm so happy I could shit.

DQ was for breaking the 180 rule. We had a stage where we were facing away from the target and had to turn and engage targets. Well, I starting drawing immediately when the buzzer went off as I started turning. But doing so meant I swept people. So no more fun for me.

Disappointing. And I'm not overly happy with putting beginners, which I'm going to count myself as one since I haven't done IDPA in a generation or so, on a stage like that without adequate advise and training. Advise like 'turn, then draw'.

Bah. Not happy.

The CZ P07 performed flawlessly, at least. Good groups, even under stress.

Fuck.

96 I'm digging the grip on that Taurus.

As for VA, I'm hoping cooler heads prevail. Rather than finding a cop there if someone decides to start some shit, I have some better advice. My fear is that the cops have been told to do exactly nothing - remember who is in charge. Instead, gather as much evidence as possible. In this age of ubiquitous cell phones, I'd gather as much evidence as possible, and then think about talking to them LATER. (And as critical as I am of the police - and I am, and they deserve it - the number one job of the police is NOT "keeping us save", "serving and protecting" and all that nonsense - it's the investigation of crime. At that role, fortunately, the cops are damn good at it. Take advantage of that by helping them in their number one role. If someone starts shot, get it on camera, and turn it in to the cops later on.)

I want cooler heads to prevail tomorrow, incidentally. But I know the realities. You have power-mad Statists who want control over every aspect of our lives by every means necessary, pitted against people who are (rightly) passionate about their defense of the natural right to self-defense and to provide for personal deterrence.

I'll be pulling for all my fellows in VA tomorrow.

No range trip yet, but I'm thinking one will happen when the calendars flip up to February. We shall see.

109 I decided to avoid the event because reasons. But FWIW, I opine below:

However, Insom (@19) has a point, trust no one that you don't already know and, further, would trust in a tough situation. The State Assembly, the Governor, the local/Richmond and VAStaatsPolizei, and the media cannot be assumed to be on our side. Treat them with the suspicion they deserve and remember Charlottesville, but turned up to eleven.

I hope there are a lot of independent videographers there with a mix of internet connected devices (although this will define you as present at the event) and non-internet/off-line storage for a permanent record. AND assume every move you make while in the area is on a video somewhere.

Remember if the Covington confrontation had not been independently videographed to counter teh media presentation/frame, Nick Sandmann's life would have been permanently ruined even more than it has already been.

Free men do not willingly enter cages they do not control, stay outside the wire designed and approved by an infanticidal totalitarian gun grabbing tyrannical governor.

Pray for the people that attend this "event" in support of our God-given Rights.

MAE, that's odd. Our club sort of has an unwritten rule that when one is starting with his or her back to the target, the RO asks, specifically, which way the shooter is going to turn and things are clarified.

Heck, I consider it best practice, depending on how the stage is laid out, to tell the RO exactly what target you're going after first and where your first shot will be taken from. That way, the RO doesn't blunder into your path.

Sorry about the DQ but I'm glad to know you're out shooting IDPA. Loads of fun and great practice.

If I came across a long barrel Dragoon in 357 I would get it based on the reputation. It says something that you see so few used ones for sale. People hold onto the them.

147 Question for the Horde:

By the end of the year, I want to get a AR-15 put together, and I want it to replicate as much as possible the M-4. The reason for this is simple: to maintain my M-4 proficiency. It's the same reason I bought my Beretta (my first gun): to maintain my proficiency so that when I hit the range on a Reserve weekend, I won't look and feel like a blithering idiot.

(Besides, I always wanted to own a gun anyway: I just had a great excuse to get the Beretta, and eventually for the same reason I will get the M17/Sig P320. Anyways...)

Any suggestions on how to go about doing this? I know the AR and the M-4 are on the same platform, so that's easy enough, but more or less I want the exact same thing, even down to the scope that appears on the M-4. (My vision is to have my AR do everything a M-4 can except go three-round burst or full auto - semi-auto is just fine, and legal besides.)

Find out what your unit uses and buy the civilian version.

You can get mil-spec just about everything, even down to the optics. I'm a similar position, since the ANG re-stared rifle qual.

I'm not too worried about the optics, I just want to be more comfortable with the platform in general.

If you are from the carry handle era (like those of us who are 29 or thereabouts) then those are harder to find. I find the detachable carry handles abomination YMMV. If you are from flattop quadrail era then just about everything is in that world. Fire controls and all that are right where you remember them.

Not anymore, actually.

Few weeks back, Nikon issued an Official Announcement, that they were vacating the entire Sports Optics arena, and that what inventory was in the pipeline, be it wholesale or retail, was IT, and there would be no more.

WATCH FOR good closeout deals on Nikon Optics, and buy the HIGHEST END, MOST EXPENSIVE items that you possibly can.

That Nikon Monarch just might be priced like a Pro-Staff. And those prices are going to change weekly, or even daily.

Oh, and a thought. The trope used to be "spend as much on the scope as you do the rifle". This used to make sense when a Remington 700 BDL was $695, and so was a Leupold Mk III.

But in this age of hyper-accurate $400 rifles, it's time to update the above trope.

Spend TWICE as much on the scope as you do the rifle. Three times, if you can.

And study the You Tubes of "how to mount a scope". Lots of wrong ways to avoid doing.

No, that's under the barrel, not on the top.

Posted by: The inexplicable Dr. Julius Strangepork at January 19, 2020 08:06 PM (llwbK)

The vented rib on a Python revolver is to allow for ambient air circulate *under* the rib, cooling the sighting plane, thus reducing mirage emanating from the rib.

Back in the days of NRA Bullseye Match shooting, and even PPC matches (Police Practical Course), the many rounds fired while standing in a static position sure would heat up the barrel, and the mirage could in certain conditions, really screw up the sight picture.

Now, I can't speak to how effective, or not, the vented rib on the Python was. But that was it's intended purpose, as designed.

What I can speak to though, is that Colt's Marketing Department forbid any discussion of eliminating the rib to reduce manufacturing costs.

For one, that rib made the Python the "sexiest" and most recognizable revolver of it's time.

For another, the "reduce manufacturing costs" already existed. It was called the Colt Trooper Mk III.

Any suggestions on how to go about doing this? I know the AR and the M-4 are on the same platform, so that's easy enough, but more or less I want the exact same thing, even down to the scope that appears on the M-4. (My vision is to have my AR do everything a
M-4 can except go three-round burst or full auto - semi-auto is just
fine, and legal besides.)

Depends on what you want to use it for. The M4 is a kludge design to get a shorter barrel more convenient for getting in and out of vehicles. The military length barrel itself is not available without a tax stamp from the ATF. Clones use a 16 inch barrel. The A2 using the 20 inch barrel is an alternative along with 18 inch. The 20 inch is the original design and pretty dependable, for the most part 18 inch barrels as also pretty good. The 16 inch carbine length can be overgassed and it is a bit harsher in operation.

285 But VA is a Democrat state. Republican control is an aberration in its history.

Posted by: blaster at January 19, 2020 08:10 PM (ZfRYq)
]

The VAGOP doesn't want the responsibility of leadership as far as I can tell.

Nick Freitas (Culpuper VA) got no assistance from the GOP reminding him about filing dates in the last election. SO, after the closing date he ran a write-in campaign and WON with about 57% of the vote.

Many VA districts did not even bother with putting a R candidate on the ballot (too much work I guess).

After infanticidal Governor Coonman Gosnell y Northam staged a gun grabbing legislative session months before the election (which went nowhere solely due to the Republican members of the General Assembly), I heard not a single campaign ad from the GOP in NoVA about the governor's infanticide dreams or of the potential for gun grabbing legislation citing the real actual reality for it to re-occur based on events over the past summer.

The VAGOP was kind enough to warn me about the Democrat support for high tolls on the local expressways as a very serious issue that should resonate with every freedom loving Virginian.

Alas, no. The Python and it's smaller venom-mate the Diamondback, have sights which are fully snaggable, especially the adjustable rear-sight.

Oh, and the Diamondback is a great gun to own and shoot.

It's based on the smaller frame of the Police Positive, and is all polished and dolled up to look like a 7/8th scale version of the Python.

The Diamondback is most often found in .38 Special chambering, although some ultra-rare .32s were made, and the more common .22 long rifle.

If you see one at an affordable price, BUY it!

While many of your points are right, remember the very un-republic black-robed forced gerrymandering. Because the VA GOP thought they could actually win in court, I don't think they bothered to run people who could be in multiple districts (based on different maps). When they lost (again) finally, it was too close to the election to get people into some of those slots.
Yes, they screwed up. But one element was the unjust gerrymander BS that only succeeded because of a black-robed Democrat activist.

Posted by: kallisto - at January 19, 2020 08:54 PM (2sspa)

366 303, Catch Thirty-Thr33,

If you have the distance and don't need to get in and out of vehicles with it, I would recommend the older design, the M-16-A2 or A4 with the 20 inch barrel. You can get one with an adjustable stock if you desire but the longer barrel has better dwell time, is gentler on the brass, and has a longer sight line. The A2 had an integral carry handle while the A4 was and is flattopped for optics.

If you are going to go with optics, then you might want to consider other options than the fixed front/sight gas block on the M4 or M-16-A2 clones. These are rugged but they can get in the way of optics as the best way to mount optics is closest to the bore. Having optics (scopes--not necessarily red dots) mounted high can be an issue with zeroing and proper cheek welds on the stock.

Want a battle rattle truck gun, go with the M4, red dot and fixed front sight with foldable rear back-up back sight aka BUIS. Something like the Ruger M4 clone is a decent start.

Want a rifle more useful for long distance and scopes on smaller targets, get the longer barrel and a flattop receiver with a low profile front gas block.

Whatever you decide, you can always mount a new upper that gives you options. Go with the m4 now, get a A4 type upper later or vice versa.

I spent 20 years in Reston, VA. My GOP organizing efforts were extensive but futile. My fellow GOP workers were great people who were OK with losing. I did the best I could, and was effective as a local community leader. But a stealth one, giving power to individuals under the radar.

I eventually moved my family to where I could hold my head up high. And there are still too many Leftists, even here.

399 Maybe those were even legit FBI arrests for a change. But given how the Bureau itself had to correct Dir. Wray's bogus white supremacist statistics and given that they still can't identify a motive for Rep. Scalise's shooter and given the sheer incompetence of the Stoneman-Douglas debacle and above all, given that this Director is still conducting a massive cover-up of Spy-Gate, Chris Wray is like the wolf who cried boy to me.

Nobody believes you anymore, Chris. Too many lies for too many years. But, in fairness, you did stop the chilling Aunt Becky Menace stalking the nation.

Four-aught wet/dry black emery cloth, sanding gently with a generous application of boiled-linseed oil in the sanding.

After this dries hard, (a few days), repeat with four-ought steel wool. Wait again for the dryening.

Complete the abrasive steps with a polishing using a gentle-grade, automotive polishing compound.

Finish it with a coat of classic Johnson's Floor Wax.

Did someone forget to feed the ewok or did one of the house hobos run off with him to trade for a case of Val-U-Rite again?
I'd go look for him myself, but that would mean putting on pants again and I only do that once per day.
