Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Morning Rant![]() But Carville's quip is not the be-all and end-all. Other things do matter, and this is an election where other things may even matter more. The economy sucks right now. Inflation is high and growth is low (in fact, growth is negative if one subtracts the federal deficit spending each quarter from GDP). Labor force participation is declining. Unemployment is going to march inexorably upward. The petrodollar has failed. Deficits are staggering. The "economic landscape" is rocky and perilous. And yet, it isn't a top issue to voters. More people are financially on the ropes, and "the economy" routinely polls outside the top position - often the top two or three positions - this cycle. Ace posted about this last week (don't comment on old threads!) in the entry titled "Poll: Immigration, Crime Top Issues for Voters." There are other polls that support this. "The Economy" is up there - it always is - but it often does not come out on top. Given economic conditions, it should and yet it is often going home with the silver or the bronze - or not even getting a spot on the podium. This is because the axiom is not actually axiomatic. The economy is the top issue when things are otherwise okay. In the early 90s and the early aughts, things were otherwise largely okay, except for 9/11 and the subsequent wars - but those wars were also fairly popular. Even as late as 2008, as things were starting to break up with the muddling wars and the hollowing out of American industry was approaching its maximum, the financial crisis was so stupendous in scale that it dominated all. Not so today. The country - and the world - today looks nothing like it did 16 years ago. The economy is faltering, but so is nearly everything else. The open border is a disaster that people across the country are harmed by every day. Pro-crime Soros-style policies directly and physically threaten and harm urban dwellers throughout the land. "Wokeness" in all its forms - social, sexual, economic, political, religious and so on across the spectrum - is now so corrosive that it cannot be ignored. Antisemitism is surging and anti-white racism is becoming the norm. The world has changed Note that last month - the despicable "Pride Month" - was fairly muted. The backlash last year has left businesses especially cautious. Some went all-in as always, but it was much less noisy than in years past. There is more litigation than ever surrounding "DEI" type policies, too, and some potentially-interesting battles are forming up. The condition that dare not speak its name - the triple standard of "law" - is increasingly acknowledged, both by those decrying it and those claiming that such assertions are preposterous. The vast overextensions in the culture over the past 16 years combined with the continuous social, political and policy disasters from COVID to date have conspired to eclipse the economy in an election cycle that should, by historical norms, be dominated by it. Carville and all the rest who rely on "people vote their pocketbooks" are correct only when things aren't blowing up on all fronts. There will likely never be a campaign season where the economy is simply not an issue at all - but this is a season where, bad as it is, it is of comparatively low or middling importance. There are simply too many other problems that hurt too many people for the pocketbook to dominate the field.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I live in a state that doesn't have an immigrant problem so it's not front an center in people's minds. The economy is. It's definitely not a one size fits all election year, regions/states are affected differently. I'm not affected by the economy as much as friends and neighbors, I sympathize with them since they are hurting, bigly. I'm more concerned about how the US looks to the world and we look weak. The economy can bounce back, I believe we have lost our strength internationally and it will take a lot for it to be earned back. We survived the depression due to fdr dying and a war time economy. Now a world war would ruin us for decades if we survived it as a nation.

Do you know the funniest thing that occurred to me?
Kalorama decided to play this game of having a retard in the white house, while the real power was behind the scenes. They played this game of waiting until the primaries were over to tell the press to let the cat out of the bag about the dementia patient, now that Harris has the money and the delegates, because she would have bombed. But, they had to play the game this way, because the last four years have been an economic, demographic, and military disaster. Why? Because in the shortest game of telephone ever, Harris could not properly repeat the orders of Kalorama to the retard. Posted by: Thomas Paine at July 03, 2024 11:10 AM (lTGtQ) 36
There are many issues for sure. But the economy trumps (no pun) all of them. If gdp were growing 6% and inflation 2%, people wouldn’t care about immigration as much.
It’s because the economy is in the shitter that immigration is exacerbated as an issue. A bad economy makes everything else bad around it. Posted by: Biden is Finished at July 03, 2024 11:10 AM (zwoD2) 37

Most people vote with their emotions. That's the common denominator in all this.
In many instances, that emotion manifests itself in being pissed off that your money isn't going as far as it did, in having a hard time making ends meet, or even having lost your job. This will be interpreted as "it's the economy, stupid" -- but it's really just emotion. "Fuck these rich assholes!" In other instances -- like right now -- it's being pissed at watching filthy illegals waltz across the border and get all kinds of free shit that you as a citizen can't get. This will be interpreted as "immigration," but it's really just emotion. "Fuck these vermin!" And of course for most Democraps, the sole motivating favor is pathological hysteria against Trump. I think it's very rare that voters make election decisions on rational, clear-headed analysis. Posted by: Elric Blade at July 03, 2024 11:11 AM (iFTx/) 42

Their EBT cards are full as usual. Upper middle class professionals, who have generally done well since they own assets which have appreciated well ahead of inflation. I think it's very rare that voters make election decisions on rational, clear-headed analysis.
Posted by: Elric Blade at July 03, 2024 11:11 AM (iFTx/) ++++ It's exceedingly rare. Most people vote according to tribe or visceral feeling, not policy and reason. The policy and reason are ex-post-factor rationalizations. Tribal voting withstands virtually everything. The true partisans do their duty no matter what because that's the tribe. Identity is tied up in it. Visceral voting, however, is vaguer. A lot of Trump's success in 2016 was visceral. He was different, he was an outsider, he was not of the body and that was *good.* Things like rampant crime, colonists swarming the border, the humiliation of a shambling husk being led about by the gentle hands of foreign dignitaries, etc., - all of that hits viscerally. It's probably one of the sources of the bad-looking polling (assuming it - or elections - are all that important, anyway), once the rationalizations are stripped away. This isn't entirely fair. Obama did not run the economy into a ditch. It happened on Bush's watch, the culmination of a decade of Greenspan's gentle tutelage and the constant machinations by despicable men of both parties in a ten-year orgy of avarice, poor planning and avoidance of consequence.
== Actually, the whole thing happened due to Dodd and Frank - and Bush tried to bring this to the government's attention. But they were too busy getting payoffs from the finance industry that loved the rule. By the end no one liked it. But while everyone was getting fat, it was a party. It's hard to predict anything, given the lawfare idiocy that has been the standard against Trump, but:
1) Alvin Bragg did not contest the motion to dismiss based on the SCOTUS ruling - he could have done that, but prosecutors don't contest something that isn't in the cards. This means, yeah, the Judge is taking this serious. 2) Its impossible to un-ring a bell, and Judge Merchan allowed evidence to be presented to prove guilt that the SCOTUS just clearly said may not be presented - ie his emails and immune WH communications. 3) Case is going to get dismissed without sentencing because no Judge or Prosecutor needs a reprimand on their record if they want to continue in that career...and I think that reprimand would come from above with sentencing Trump to anything given what SCOTUS clearly outlined about President's official acts being used as evidence in prosecution of unofficial acts. Unless someone knows different Posted by: Skip at July 03, 2024 11:35 AM (os67U) ======== After Bernie got shafted in 2016, the DNC made changes to appease their left flank in what super delegates could do. The common voter doesn't see "things blowing up on all fronts". Of the basket of problems we see "blowing up on all fronts", they either (a) don't see because it isn't presented in the media they follow or the people they socialize with follow / talk about, (b) have been brainwashed / conditioned to see many of the issues as righteous or simply the accepted new normal [e.g. climate change, COVID tyranny, wars in Ukraine & Israel and our whatever positions, gay rights, etc.], and/or (c) the things they truly don't like [e.g. DEI, trans craziness, etc.] will become the new normal and they've been conditioned / intimidated to not fight it or expect anything different. Barring a piercing personal impact from one or more of these issues, Carville is right and they're gonna operate off the short term memory of how they're feeling [e.g. economically] in the moment, hence the need for non-stop election year gaslighting. Political incompetence and corruption has long been white noise to them. Couple that with the massive fraud machine, and that's their strategy to win. They just need to keep any one or two of those issues from massively blowing up against them right before the election

During the last presidential election cycle, the Republicans and conservatives were mocked for claiming Biden was "off" mentally though it was visible even then. And when crazy Kamala was finally elevated from the swamp, she was one badass lady.
The allegations about Tara Reade weren't quieted until right before the election, with PDT accused daily of saying p*ssy, being a rapist, his wife a former prostitute. He despised ALL migrants! He separated families and kept 500 kids in cages! The cellar dweller, the scripted little campaign gatherings, PDT allowing people to die from C19 through he had emergency facilities erected around the nation that went unused. He'd refuse to leave the White House. He'd set troops on citizens. yadda, yadda. It came down to decency and civil society because Russia and abortion weren't at the top of the voters' wish lists. Badass Kamala again, decency and civil society for NATO and Ukraine, open and fair immigration for those in need. What's changed for the better? Some of those are actually decent watches. It's hilarious. A hundred bucks (probably double that now) for a good knock-off and you actually end up with a watch that keeps time and looks good. It won't fool someone who actually knows what he's doing, of course, but a man on horseback won't notice and they actually work well and feel good.

Interesting. In my town you couldn't have well and septic on less then two acres. Wanna have some separation of the two. Not sure what the minimum acreage for well/septic but there are 0.5 acre lots near me that have both. With the leach field. Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at July 03, 2024 12:05 PM (N39Ws) 392
Never heard of Marvin before. Some of the vintage examples on Ebay aren't too pricey and they look nice. But I've never spent more than $50 on a watch...

My dad would occasionally bring me a fake Rolex from Taiwan when I was a yute.

Second look at “Dewey Defeats Truman”?
One thing that one notices if politics is studied, there is a natural ebb and flow in a two party system. After 4 terms of a Democrat, voters are likely to install a Republican. Over the long term, I don’t think there is any question that strategists have queered elections by trying to eliminate normal political swings and their consequences. Sort of the way the “experts” eliminated the business cycle. The increasing cheat can be inferred to the extent that they no longer even pretend to care about voter wishes, intent, donations or anything. Any thing. That’s what it looks like from out here in the cheap seats. Posted by: Common Tater at July 03, 2024 12:06 PM (EcT7r) 398

347 I think you are minimizing the anger and panic of the Democrat donor elite.
That the money train might slow a bit, for awhile; the lowest classes of border jumpers might find a park in their county and contaminate their happy lives with the other great unwashed uncontained & content within their Obamacare hubs. If they're furious, it's because they've just found out they've been played too. Their families have become too closely tied to politics & now they can sweat, too. Oh, well. Probably said by someone above but... The economy will be fine if the other problems, immigration, inflation, crime are fixed. All of them are linked to make a perfect storm to destroy this country. The Left knows this because they did the linkage. Now others are awakening to it, hopefully enough to stop it.
