But Carville's quip is not the be-all and end-all. Other things do matter, and this is an election where other things may even matter more. The economy sucks right now. Inflation is high and growth is low (in fact, growth is negative if one subtracts the federal deficit spending each quarter from GDP). Labor force participation is declining. Unemployment is going to march inexorably upward. The petrodollar has failed. Deficits are staggering. The "economic landscape" is rocky and perilous.
And yet, it isn't a top issue to voters. More people are financially on the ropes, and "the economy" routinely polls outside the top position - often the top two or three positions - this cycle. Ace posted about this last week (don't comment on old threads!) in the entry titled "Poll: Immigration, Crime Top Issues for Voters." There are other polls that support this. "The Economy" is up there - it always is - but it often does not come out on top. Given economic conditions, it should and yet it is often going home with the silver or the bronze - or not even getting a spot on the podium. This is because the axiom is not actually axiomatic. The economy is the top issue when things are otherwise okay. In the early 90s and the early aughts, things were otherwise largely okay, except for 9/11 and the subsequent wars - but those wars were also fairly popular. Even as late as 2008, as things were starting to break up with the muddling wars and the hollowing out of American industry was approaching its maximum, the financial crisis was so stupendous in scale that it dominated all. Not so today. The country - and the world - today looks nothing like it did 16 years ago. The economy is faltering, but so is nearly everything else. The open border is a disaster that people across the country are harmed by every day. Pro-crime Soros-style policies directly and physically threaten and harm urban dwellers throughout the land. "Wokeness" in all its forms - social, sexual, economic, political, religious and so on across the spectrum - is now so corrosive that it cannot be ignored. Antisemitism is surging and anti-white racism is becoming the norm. The world has changed Note that last month - the despicable "Pride Month" - was fairly muted. The backlash last year has left businesses especially cautious. Some went all-in as always, but it was much less noisy than in years past. There is more litigation than ever surrounding "DEI" type policies, too, and some potentially-interesting battles are forming up. The condition that dare not speak its name - the triple standard of "law" - is increasingly acknowledged, both by those decrying it and those claiming that such assertions are preposterous. The vast overextensions in the culture over the past 16 years combined with the continuous social, political and policy disasters from COVID to date have conspired to eclipse the economy in an election cycle that should, by historical norms, be dominated by it. Carville and all the rest who rely on "people vote their pocketbooks" are correct only when things aren't blowing up on all fronts. There will likely never be a campaign season where the economy is simply not an issue at all - but this is a season where, bad as it is, it is of comparatively low or middling importance. There are simply too many other problems that hurt too many people for the pocketbook to dominate the field.Comments

This isn't entirely fair. Obama did not run the economy into a ditch. It happened on Bush's watch, the culmination of a decade of Greenspan's gentle tutelage and the constant machinations by despicable men of both parties in a ten-year orgy of avarice, poor planning and avoidance of consequence.
What Obama and his merry band of brigands did was elongate the disaster and prevent recovery according to the twin imperatives that no crisis go to waste and that consequences for the ruling class be forcibly transferred to the rubes. And yes, he won despite that. He would have won a third time, if he had been able.
Just like Roosevelt, really.

I do think the above is a bit overoptimistic about Pride and wokery. Yes, companies which want to make money have pulled in their horns. But not all that much. Even Tractor Supply (!) tried going woke earlier THIS YEAR!
And of course other agents have not backed off at all. The trend of treating skid marks on Pride displays, as bordering on treason, is new. I've seen no indication that schools are backing off, except where our side has taken over. They still want to chop the kids.

It's exceedingly rare. Most people vote according to tribe or visceral feeling, not policy and reason. The policy and reason are ex-post-factor rationalizations.
Tribal voting withstands virtually everything. The true partisans do their duty no matter what because that's the tribe. Identity is tied up in it.
Visceral voting, however, is vaguer. A lot of Trump's success in 2016 was visceral. He was different, he was an outsider, he was not of the body and that was *good.* Things like rampant crime, colonists swarming the border, the humiliation of a shambling husk being led about by the gentle hands of foreign dignitaries, etc., - all of that hits viscerally. It's probably one of the sources of the bad-looking polling (assuming it - or elections - are all that important, anyway), once the rationalizations are stripped away.

When I did utility disconnects and collections in a shithole, I stopped carrying a wallet or cash. I carried one of those small card-sized holders with a clip on it, and the only thing in it was a credit card and my driver's license. After moving on, I still carried that for some years until it wore out, then bought a wallet and now am still using that, although there's not much in it. I've carried money clip-type things and probably would again if I could find one I liked.

Agree. The conservative movement has been stuck in "we have the better arguments" as if mere logic will win out politically. This is exacerbated by the problem of conservative politicians who are generally loath to exercise power when they actually have it. That is an indication to the general population that conservatives actually don't believe the arguments they are making.
This seems to be turning around with conservatives with the likes of DeSantis (I view Trump more as a nationalist populist).

Same. Watches for me have a three-fold appeal:
1. It's one of three types of jewelry most men can wear without looking like a thug or a douche. The others are a wedding ring and a tie clip/cufflinks. I am not entitled to the former and rarely need the latter. If I want an ornament, it has to be a watch.
2. I genuinely like them. They please me from a design and mechanics standpoint. I have a collection of watches and I like all of them for different reasons ranging from the look to how they work.
3. The point you made. When I'm talking with someone, I don't want to look at my phone - and I don't want the other person to look at his. It's discourteous and distracting.

Actually, the whole thing happened due to Dodd and Frank - and Bush tried to bring this to the government's attention. But they were too busy getting payoffs from the finance industry that loved the rule.
By the end no one liked it. But while everyone was getting fat, it was a party. Without the banking crisis, 08-10 might never have happened. As DC has gotten more and more involved with the day to day interference of the doings of the country, the more mistakes they make. They have made many more recently, Biden with a few biggies right when he started that may nail us in the end. Watch the big regional banks. Failure is coming.

Let's imagine a situation where 8 states don't have the Democrat nominee on it. They're all red states with Republican legislatures.
3 of them give in and change the law to allow the new nominee. The other 5 are either intransigent or can't get it together in time to "fix" the issue.
That leaves five red states where Democrats can't vote for president. That's massively damaging to down ballot races. Massively.

1) Alvin Bragg did not contest the motion to dismiss based on the SCOTUS ruling - he could have done that, but prosecutors don't contest something that isn't in the cards. This means, yeah, the Judge is taking this serious.
2) Its impossible to un-ring a bell, and Judge Merchan allowed evidence to be presented to prove guilt that the SCOTUS just clearly said may not be presented - ie his emails and immune WH communications.
3) Case is going to get dismissed without sentencing because no Judge or Prosecutor needs a reprimand on their record if they want to continue in that career...and I think that reprimand would come from above with sentencing Trump to anything given what SCOTUS clearly outlined about President's official acts being used as evidence in prosecution of unofficial acts.

After Bernie got shafted in 2016, the DNC made changes to appease their left flank in what super delegates could do.
They don't vote on the first ballot now. They can't stop it unless it goes to the second ballot, and the declared delegates have to vote for the one who won the primary in their states: Biden.
So, the rules don't allow for a change. The DNC could change, I mean break, the rules, but that's, shall we say, risky.

Dodd and Frank carry a lot of responsibility for it, but they are not alone. It was a decade-plus all-of-government effort with huge input from the finance industry and some of the others.
This is, by the way, why I hate Elizabeth Warren so much. If you dig into her history, you'll find that she is - rare as it is in Washington - smart and well-informed. She actually *does* know what she's talking about (on finance, banking and economy, anyway) and has a good grasp of how things work. She is neither stupid or ignorant.
And yet her approach to everything is utterly despicable and predatory, consistent with state power ideologies. And she, unlike many (like AOC, for example), cannot blame it on ignorance or stupidity or even run-of-the-mill cravenness.
She does what she does with full knowledge and ability to know that it is wrong. She is not stupid, she is evil and thus is beneath contempt. She is a monster.

The reaction to 2020 changed the makeup more than any individual judge. Roberts begged them to not take election cases, assuring them normalcy would return. He got what he wanted, over Thomas and Alito's objections, and things did not return to normal.
Since, SCOTUS has overturned Roe and Chevron.

To them it doesn't mean voting or even the will of the people, it means the power structures in place that allow them to exercise their power. I have a decent collection of watches and about half of them are battery powered. A few years back, I bought a little watch servicing kit and read some guides. I do batteries myself now. It ended up being *much* cheaper that way.
If you have one watch, it definitely isn't worth it to DIY it because you'll never break even. If you have several, it likely is worth it.

Not yet. Nitrogen run off comes from so many places yet the burden of treatment is placed on municipalities. Storm drain runoff is another hotbutton issue. One thing that one notices if politics is studied, there is a natural ebb and flow in a two party system. After 4 terms of a Democrat, voters are likely to install a Republican.
Over the long term, I don’t think there is any question that strategists have queered elections by trying to eliminate normal political swings and their consequences. Sort of the way the “experts” eliminated the business cycle.
The increasing cheat can be inferred to the extent that they no longer even pretend to care about voter wishes, intent, donations or anything. Any thing.
That’s what it looks like from out here in the cheap seats.
