Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Training Pets

trainned cat.jpg

Saw this and it made me laugh. A cat is not a dog.

Although I did have a friend who paper trained a chicken.

Sharon (willow's apprentice)

Have you ever trained a cat to do tricks, or trained a chicken?

Meet The PetMorons

hermangg.jpeg

Herman the German

This is Herman on his first evening away from his brothers and sisters. It also happens to be his first night in a hotel as we take him from Minnesota to his home in Tennessee. He was a bit nervous at first but he did great!

Jeff

Awww, Herman has some outsized puppy paws!

From Jewells:

Elmeryy.jpg

This is Elmer who was picked up as a stray. He's approximately 10 years old. He's another cuddle bug. We don't know his history but he seems in pretty good shape. We'll know more after a vet visit.

What a sweetie!

Heidi 4 4.jpg

Heidi 4

All of our dogs have been female German shepherds named Heidi. This is number 4. She is our hero dog. A few years ago 3 men broke down our front door in broad daylight. From what our security cameras showed, when Heidi rushed to greet them they left in a hurry. Good dog.

Yours,
M (lurker)

What a beauty! And a good dog!

Now, our own Swiss guide dog, Gioia, takes us on a little trip to Lenzerheide.

She does well in snow.

winter sun dogg.jpg

She is pampered at hotels.

pampered lenzerheide.jpg

This is how human pet companions take the winter sun at resorts in Switzerland.

winter sunning switz.jpg

Ready to go with Gioia on her next trip?

10 I was heading out with Paisley lying down in her kennel looking sad. When I asked if she wanted to go for a ride she perked up but I had to ask her twice. Then she did her happy doggie dance.
I love how intense she gets looking at stuff to bark at. I even love letting her bark.

Some cats teach themselves tricks.

18 My cat, Fanny, will play fetch with wadded up receipts.

Have been having adventures letting Jake off lead at the lake. It's not that I think he'd disappear. Just worried about my ability to get him if he doesn't come when I call. And that's what he did yesterday so I had to drive the car over to get him. He has had great fun watching the geese fly up when he heads their way.

Dogs, use big bones or so I've been told as I don't have dogs. By the time we are aware of a tooth/teeth problem it's serious and expensive. We feed both kibble and canned wet food.

27 Yay! Best Pet Thread of the week! Thanks, KT

Daisy the young madcap Malinois and Onyxia the old black cat wave front paws hello. Barks and mews.

Daisy woke me up about an hour before usual this morning, obviously distressed, so we popped outside for a tinkle and poo. So beautiful in the pre-dawn. Light fog in hazy daybreak. The neighbor's cock crowed, appropriately. I heard a hawk screeching, and an owl hooting, and many little birds singing. Then I snuck back into bed, and Daisy actually let me snooze a little while longer. Good doggy.

A reminder that BluebirdOfBitterness.com usually has two "Caturday" posts that Pet Morons might enjoy. One today was a video of… oh, look! it was my own video of Ony and the late, beloved Charlie demonstrating male v female behaviors. (Views jumped from 11 to 90+ : positively viral!)

One of the Iditarod mushers, Nick Petit, lets his dogs live in the house with him. I'm not certain that makes them pets, because he is sort of wild himself.

Some Iditarod dogs retire and are adopted. When they are older they can make good pets. But not during their working years.

58 My cats, some of them, have done what humans might have called "tricks." Though they were always something the cats wanted to do. Tatiana the Wonder Siberian would race after a soft rubber ball and bring it back to me -- not to please me, now, but so we could continue the game. Chekov the late Siberian, Tati's nephew, would do that occasionally when he was younger. And Arizona the big part-Maine Coon would play ball with me on the stairs of our townhouse. I'd bat a crumpled paper up toward him as he waited at the top. If it landed above midway, he would come down and bat it back to me. If it was below that, I'd have to climb up.

Now and then the paper landed in his zone, and he didn't move. I'd say, "You can do better than that," and he'd come down and bat it back to me.

Maybe. Though I'd think a rubber insert for a garbage disposal would not smell enticing to a cat. Plus she (or maybe it's Stirling, I don't know) is doing it when I'm either asleep or away at work, so who could the cat be communicating with?

My dog Bogie can easily pick up the scent of food on rubber, or anything else.

All of our dogs have been female German shepherds named Heidi. This is number 4.

I tried this with my spitz dogs. Dog 2 looked like his predecessor except for a small golden spot between his ears. We tried calling him the other dog's name, but it didn't fit, so we ended naming him Aureus, which got turned into Aurelius

80 Another stellar Pet Thread!

Heidi 4 is a good doggie.

Our 10 months old GSD Heidi loves to stick her head out the window when riding in the vehicle. She is a talker and is not shy of loudly critiquing people or animals as we drive by.

82 We had a cat once who would play fetch with individual Lifesavers in cellophane wrappers. Don't know that we taught him to do that, though.

Some cats teach themselves tricks.

I had a cat that would fetch nickels by holding them vertically in the mouth.

83 Same problem with my kids. Should of named them so their names didn't so closely match (nearly rhyme).

Wouldn't help. There were five of us, named nothing similar, and Mom often went through the whole list before she got the one she wanted.

We were long gone by then.

84 Hello Horde. Lots of good doggos up there!

Bingley had his teeth cleaned this week and needed some extractions. Poor fella was so loopy afterwards, but is back to normal now.

I have to start brushing his teeth when everything heals up. Seems like an excellent way to make him hate me.

One of the very early report claimed a cat had contracted it. I was sure this would lead to a drive to kill pet cats. These vermin do that at any opportunity, like to save 'songbirds'

Another clue was when Australia was locked down the SPCAs had someone come and shoot all their dogs, despite many people requesting, begging to be allowed to come and get them.

Not euthanized - shot with bullets.

Our 'betters' are monsters.

88 "my cats have one or both ears that appear irritated to the cat and they scratch them madly, even to the point of bleeding behind the ear. The vet never finds ear-mites or anything except a bit of dirt, which I would expect. "

Skin allergies maybe?

We had one cat that we think was allergic to her won dander, so not exactly the same problem, but our vet at the time gave us a supplement for her. Some kind of fat or essential oil that made her skin less flakey. Maybe.

It's been a whole bunch of years since then. I don't remember very well the sepcifics.

89 Dagny's "trick," if it is her, is to fish the rubber insert out of the kitchen drain, the side with the garbage disposal.
She carries it a ways only to leave it on the floor or, once, in her dry food bowl. Darned if I can figure out what is so attractive about the object.

Cats love to move or pry at things to see if something is under it they can catch. Its the instinct that makes them knock things off tables. If my lady cat sees an overturned laundry basket she digs in the lower corners to see if something turns up.

One of my cats has that - I have used both vaseline and coconut oil on the itchy part with some success, as I think the itchy part is dryness from allergy or nerves or whatever. It has helped him some.

Another cat had that, got meds for it and he was allergic to the meds and had a terrible rash.

94 "Have you ever trained a cat to do tricks?"

Yep. Our cat (I'll send in a pic one of these weeks) does a trick whenever he wants his treats.

I put the bag on top of a small shelf (about eight feet up) and he has to climb a pole in order to reach it.

He knocks the bag down, I catch and place it back up there. We do this five, six times and then I put the bag on another part of the shelf and tell him to shake it. Takes the bag in his teeth, shakes it like a toy and drops it down to me. Then it's time for treats. We do this nightly.
