Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Sometimes pets have their own moments of stress:

cat dog spider.jpg

* * *

Some pets have special powers:

* * *

Some companion animals are famous. Did you know that George Washington had two favorite war horses?

* * *

Looking for a different kind of pet? Here's a London Zoo employee feeding a Shoebill Stork during WWII.

I imagine some people would find the way they sound sort of disconcerting during wartime. But they do greeting rituals. Check the thread.

Story Time

Warning: Tear Jerker. Two special Corgis.

Life, in Dog Years

My father always pampered his pets. So when he fell ill and moved in with us, it was no surprise that his corgi came to rule our home. What I didn't expect was for Trilby to care for me after Dad was gone.

NEWS

Courtesy IrishEi:

Two weeks after Guinness World Records announced a 23-year-old Chihuahua as the world's oldest living dog, a much more senior canine came out of the woodwork to claim the title.

Bobi is 30 years and 266 days old as of Feb. 1, according to Guinness. He is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a livestock guardian dog with an average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Now he's the world record holder for oldest living dog. But originally, Bobi wasn't supposed to live long at all.

Bobi was born, along with three other male puppies, in the rural village of Conqueiros in Portugal. At the time, the family who owned them already had a number of animals and decided they could not take care of any more.

One of the family's sons is Bobi's current owner, Leonel Costa, 38. He told Guinness World Records that it was common for people to bury newborn puppies they could not keep. So, once Bobi and his brothers were born, Costa's father took them away to be buried. . .

Meet The PetMorons

ruthdian.jpg

7-month old Borzoi sisters Ruth (left) and Diana (right) exhibiting that exasperating yet charming trait of all sight hounds, namely "bed fail", the extraordinary ability to adopt any posture on a bed except the one that looks normal.

They're both lovely girls, not least of all because Delilah is their lovely mother.

Hadrian the Seventh

Yes, they are lovely.

Ruckus and the Cookies

Long time mostly lurker at AOS, just wanted to drop a pic of my dog Ruckus at Christmas Cookie time. My wife baked 80 dozen cookies for the folks at my MFG Plant and Ruckus was very interested. He's a Shepherd Border Collie mix, a true food hound, 11 years old. We tell him, "no chocolate for you" it bums him out. Thanks for the Pet Thread, it's awesome!

I bet you tell him "It's for your own good", too. Look at that face!

Charlie 02162023a.jpg

Attached is Charlie, my daughter's 2 1/2 month old Bernedoodle puppy. He is their family's first dog, a joy to the parents and kids, but not (yet) Penny the cat who has ruled their home for 15 years.

I was supposed to get my new dog the chop yesterday, but I couldn't, because the girl fed him before I woke up, so I had to cancel.

I'd been waiting six weeks, so I was pretty pissed at first, but now... maybe it's a sign. Maybe Charlie should keep his 'nads.

3 Yaaay Pet Thread. The icing on the Saturday blog. Before I get to the post and comments, here's my pet reports.
🐕
Daisy the madcap Malinois has this habit of losing her squeaky-ball under furniture. She'll stick her nose and paws under, but can't quite reach. Then she'll bark and wiggle to let me know I'm supposed to help.

So, earlier this week, for her, I leaned an upholstered chair forward, and, yes, there's the squeaky ball, but also, lo and behold, the long-missing pink rubber squeaky bone. Daisy, excited, began to lunge toward the ball, then she saw the bone and went for it instead. Funny to watch. She did a real double-take. She then proceeded to run around the house, squeaking all the way. Lost toy found! Happy! Happy! Happy!

Young Daisy and old Ony the cat continue to slowly work out their relationship. They actually touched noses for a brief moment while Ony was in my lap. Of course, then Daisy got all excited and Ony hissed and spat. But it was a cute moment there.

7 Yay pet thread!

We got another new one at Shep's last week but I forgot to send a picture so I'll do that asap. His name is Elmer. Baxter went to his forever home where he joins another dog and kitty cat. Dutch the Staffordshire is not eating and just lays around. He needs a forever home desperately. He's healthy on all counts. Just depressed, poor old boy. Elliot, the Ewok look a like continues to steal hearts and he's recovering well from all his ailments.

15 Sgt Reckless is the best war horse story ever. I alway bring it up when there is a mention of military animals. This is a story that Hollywood should have made a movie long ago but it's Hollywood so it figures.

16 Rounding out the gang is Charlie, Roscoe, Lily, Rita and Brandy. Roscoe has cancer so we will have him until it's his time. His sister Lily will have a very tough time once he's gone. I think Rita and Brandy will be next to get a furever home. I sure hope so anyway.

17 Sad news, I had to take our petite Russian Blue, named Sophie, on her final trip to the vet this week - she was 18 years old, and she stopped eating and drinking about a week ago. We knew it was time, even though we didn't want it to be. She struggled a little bit to avoid getting in the car, but not for long because she had so little energy left. The vet is a friend and it was very calm, peaceful, and painless - they let me hold her while he gave her the shot. We buried her in our backyard, under a favorite tree where she liked to watch the squirrels.

I was visited a few times by Frank, therapy pug extraordinaire during chemotherapy infusions a couple times. He was sweet and snorty and let me pet him and he did his silly pug stuff. Honestly, he made me feel special because I was visited.

Not a mean bone in his body but NOT a service dog (there are several funny videos on the Tubes of You)

He roams around the yard, protecting the chicken coop from local predators mainly by just being there. Fortunately for visitors like me he has a sunny disposition.
