Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ace of Spades Pet Thread, September 3Prior to founding the KONG Company, Joe Markham owned a Volkswagen repair shop in a rough part of downtown Denver, Colorado which had experienced to a string of burglaries in 1970. Due to budget cuts, the local police precinct denied a request for increased police patrols near Joe's repair shop, and suggested that Joe should get a guard dog instead. Joe knew of a German Shepard that had failed out of the police academy's canine division for "excessive chewing" and needed a home, thus "Fritz" was adopted and became a fixture at Joe's repair shop. While the burglaries stopped, Joe became concerned after noticing Fritz had a fondness for chewing on rocks and as a result Fritz's teeth were grinding down in the process. Joe tried just about everything he could think of, talking with friends and veterinarians, all the toys in the pet store and even gave radiator hoses a try, alas nothing could deter or survive the voracious Fritz.Read about what inspired the KONG toy's shape, or watch this video: I'm a long-time lurker...just call me Aaron in Texas. Anyway, this is my pal Crash the Wonder Dog. Crash is an Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix that came from a shelter. He's appropriated the dining room table to use as a watch tower because he can see the driveway when we're gone.A dog with an excuse for standing on the table! This is Fro, who came to us with the name of Aphrodite. She was a foster from the Durham Region Humane Society, and originally was going to be with us on a temp basis while they found her a home. When we got her, she was about 11 years old, and had mammary cancer, so we assumed we had her for the duration. Sure enough, after about a month, they asked is we would keep her. The answer, of course, was yes. When we got her, we were told she had 1-2 years to go. We pampered her for 3 years, and gave her a proper send-off when the time came. She will be missed.A lovely cat and a lovely story. This is Kylo. He is our daughters dog, but since we're dogless he's scratching that doggy itch. We spent three weeks with them while the rv was being serviced and he decided I was his favorite human. He is a great dog, very smart and kind. He chases bunnies but never catches them, no matter how close he is. sent telepathically by PeggyAn impressive dog! This is Nayro, (short for Nayrolothotep)our most recent bearded dragon. We're her third caregivers, and you've been kind enough to showcase our previous dragons. When my son found her she was scrawny and mistrustful of people. Two years later she has filled out nicely and enjoys being around us. That's the look we get when the dinner dish is empty far too soon... Thanks for the pet thread Lurker and very occasional commenter Coelacanth How we got her a couple of years ago I thought the Horde might be interested on an update on my new kittens, first seen on the June 11 Pet Thread. Schroedinger is over eight pounds, now, and enjoys sitting on the antique desk while I'm on the laptop at the kitchen table. Both of them will sit together there, with both of their butts in the alcove. I've tried to get a picture of them together, but Maddie gets too interested in the camera to remain in place. (I may have to rename Schroedinger "Snotlicker", as he likes to give me kitty kisses on the nose. Copiously. Excessively.) Maddie learned that she can jump last week, and so has been getting more aerial. As you can see, she figured out how to get to the top shelf of the fiction paperback bookshelves. She looks puzzled because she's trying to figure out how to get down again. Captain ObviousWe seem to have a lot of cats in The Horde who love bookshelves and desks. And these are so young to be studious cats! Long time lurker that loves seeing everyones' best friends on the thread. This is Nike and Valkyrie relaxing after a long bout of fetch. Question: after using the litterbox, Robert the Cat (TM) will often rub his front paw vigorously against various surfaces. I know that's a way of marking via scent, but why do this after the litterbox? It's the only time he does anything like this.

Ok emergency in the pet thread. I have a 4 year old cat that has just started not using the litter box. This has been going on for about 10 days. I have cleaned litter boxes more often in case that was the problem. But to no avail. I put a litter box beside where he has been messing, and I am now cleaning out where he peed on things beside the litter box.
He can be very skittish and we did come back from vacation on the 15th of August. He has always had issues, but not this long after. I am cleaning up his area now and banishing him from his daily hiding spot that has become his unwelcome litter box. I did not think they would crap is the same area that they rest in. Any and all help or advice is appreciated. Posted by: Picric at September 03, 2022 03:38 PM (13tTk) 12
Haha, totally me, trying to pull the blanket from under the bulldog. I finally got smart, and keep a separate blanket off my side of the bed so I have one when I get cold.

Wednesday, bicycling to supermarket, one of those "did I see that?" moments. Stop, turn around, ride back and... find a double yellow head Amazon in the gutter! She had flustered off a perch outside on a small apartment patio. First attempt got a squawk and lunge, but presented finger to her belly and said "step up!" She did! Someone had given good basic hand fed baby bird training. Her flight feathers were trimmed. I stood outside the nearby window and shouted till owner stepped out. "What are you doing with my bird?" But soon understood the situation and thanked me. Exciting.

I'd rule out urinary tract issues. I've had cats that blocked and were also prone to UTIs. The crystals in the urine are irritating. There is a brand of cat litter designed for problematic cats, but can't remember the brand name.

And any FYI, any time you have a male cat that starts hiding, suspect urinary blockage and get them to a vet ASAP. This is true of neutered males too. If it's not blockage, it is likely a UTI

I had a big old cat named Grunkus, that blocked three times in almost as many months. This was back in the 70s. They did the operation where they split the penis and sew it to the urethera walls to make a larger opening. He lived to a good old age with no further problems.
Jack, the best cat ever, had problems after he was neutered. I put himon Eukanuba, at a friend's suggestion and he did fine. If you can convince them to eat wet food, you'll have fewer problems. Picric, it's vet time, as others upthread have offered. Your cat may be in pain, and his hiding spot, even though he's messed there, may be a source of comfort.
He may need prescription food as well, so you'll have to see what the vet says. Lovely animals today! I'm a sucker for Dobermans and German shepherds, but the bearded dragon is durned cute too! Posted by: Moki at September 03, 2022 04:07 PM (JrN/x) 41

I know that's a way of marking via scent, but why do this after the litterbox? It's the only time he does anything like this. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at September 03, 2022 *** To mark his territory and let anybody else know it's his. I'll often clean the box only to have my cat immediately use it -- not to undo my work, but to establish this is his "range." As for the urinary blocking, yes, I've seen that. There used to be something in commercial cat foods like Friskies or Nine Lives, I think some kind of ash, that contributed to that. Arizona the big red tabby got it at age 5 or 6. When Marie Antoinette the black female got it at about the same age, I rushed her to the shop -- and that was how we found out she'd been wrongly labeled a girl. Cont. from 43: However, I think the commercial foods don't contribute to to the urinary blockage as much any more. Neither Chekov nor Wolf had the problem. Of course Chekov had to go on special Rx food fairly young, and Wolf ate it too.

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the day our dog, Luna, came to live with us from the rescue facility where she'd been living since she was surrendered by the family she'd lived with for four years (since she was a puppy). She's a wonderful girl and, while it's had its ups and downs, it's been a wonderful year and we are blessed to have her.
Of course she chose to "celebrate" last night by waking me up three hours after I'd gone to sleep. Usually she does that if she'd frightened by a thunderstorm of not feeling well but apparently that wasn't it last night. She mostly wanted to play with her squeaky toy. Maybe after a year she just felt secure enough to be a jerk last night. Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at September 03, 2022 04:13 PM (fTtFy) 53

Tomorrow I drive about 45 minutes to pick up my new Siberian kitten, a brown tabby/torbie girl born on 3/26. She is therefore only about 2 weeks younger than Stirling. Since he is still intact, he'll board at Miss Linda's until his snip is done in about a week. Once he's recovered, I'll introduce them.
The girl I've tentatively named "Dagny." Yeah, there is a long tradition of giving Siberians Russian names, but I like this name, which I'm told means "new day" in Old Norse. (And we have a commenter here, "dagny, first of her name.") I know it should be pronounced "DOG-knee," but I persist with "DAG-knee." The other doesn't sound right for a cat! We have two rescued kittens from the same feral litter. Out of five, three survived. My niece has one, the only female, who is twice the size of the next largest, a male, which we have. He's all black, but you can see his stripes in the right light. Next, is Mushu, soft gray with a white splash on his chest. He's half the size of our other one, and afflicted with a chronic cough, which our vet says will probably never go away. He's a super affectionate little guy, loves pets, and snuggling. The vet has warned us not to expect him to live very long.

Notsothoreau, I've moved with cats before, but never a really long distance. I rented a U-Haul in '97 to go to Denver -- but I didn't want to put Arizona through 3 long days in a carrier; I left him at Linda's until she could put him on a plane. When I came back to Da Swamp in '01, Marie-Antoinette came with me in her carrier, but she was more adaptable and younger to boot. And I was driving my big smooth Benz, not a noisy vibrating truck.

It's why I don't want to stop over at a motel. It's exhausting to think about moving them in and back out. I want to stay at a campground if possible. It's just going to be stressful but I think they will settle in, once all the familiar stuff shows up.

notsothoreau, we have moved internationally with our dogs and cats, which entailed papers, shots, affidavits, the FDA and all sorts of expensive nonsense. The main thing is making sure you have knowledge of where your pets are during all parts of the move.
You may want to bring a couple of gallons of water from your present location with you, so ease them into the change to the new location. It will also help to avoid tummy trauma from changes in water across the drive! And if anyone is traveling with their pets through Europe, Frankfurt airport is very well versed in pet care, and take fabulous care of your animals when they transit through - walking them, feeding, watering, and lots of attention to help them deal with a frightening move. We have an Australian Sheperd mix from a shelter. We call her the tornado. Great dog. Not a lady. Spent over 1000 bucks on new fencing to keep her in our rather big back yard. Nope. She either jumps, climbs or digs her way out. She likes the neighbors cows. So far, so good.

Always nice to see Moron pets!
My new cat Allie is struggling a bit. She and Kaylee have been getting into fights. Allie is declawed (not my doing) so she can't defend herself very well. I think Kaylee is just trying to be playful, but Allie's not keen on that at all. I just hope they can reach some accommodation before it gets too cold to keep Allie out in the sunroom. I can appreciate the Kong toys. People will occasionally buy a chew toy for my 120 lb. GSD. The package will say "tough" or "chew resistant." Unless it's a Kong with the highest rating, the toy will be in pieces within 2 minutes. I'd go to a tire shop and buy a set of worn-out tires for him, but they're probably toxic and I know the big dummy would end up ingesting some of it.

Our daughter's Quaker parrot (we have a menagerie at our home) suffered a nasty cut on his neck that required stitches. I was pretty worried about him for a few days, but he seems to have recovered. We have to give him medicine, and at first he would do everything to avoid being caught. He seems to have accepted it, and now he lets us grab him and put the syringe into his mouth without much of a fuss.

Not quite too late for the pets thread!
Funny you should mention (meme above) trying to get the covers out from under the dog. At first, we kept our new rescue 1yo Belgian Malinois in a kennel at night. She was very good about it. We felt we were past her tear-up-everything stage, and with some trepidation did not lock her up for recent nights. Worked well. In fact, I think we all slept a little better. Except that now instead of her whining from her kennel at first light of dawn each day, I am in a wrestling match with muscle, and drool, and teeth. Get up! Time to go out! New development: in the middle of the night last night, I realized, that fur I felt was not our usual bedmate, Ony the cat — it was the dog, and she was so sound asleep I couldn't even bring myself to kick her off the bed. But we're going to have to do some more training. With the cat's help, I think. Posted by: mindful webworker with Malinois-mangled arms at September 03, 2022 05:56 PM (Urbpq) 136

I am cleaning up his area now and banishing him from his daily hiding spot that has become his unwelcome litter box. I did not think they would crap is the same area that they rest in. Any and all help or advice is appreciated.

I have a fairly big crate for the cat. We bought it when we were planning to ship the cockatoo to FL. I've taken her on some all day trips in it. She travels well. I have a smaller cat carrier too. It's why I don't want to stop over at a motel. It's exhausting to think about moving them in and back out. I want to stay at a campground if possible. It's just going to be stressful but I think they will settle in, once all the familiar stuff shows up.
Posted by: Notsothoreau at September 03, 2022 04:24 PM (zJDZf) I had pretty good luck at hotels when moving cats from Chicago to LA. The first day mistake was not stopping up the 'under the bed' well enough and had to have a battle for an area by the headboard. After that I jammed pillows down there and it was cool. At the stop I'd let them out, set up boxes and put out their nighttime meal, then go and get a dinner for myself. By the time I got back they had relaxed and we could have a nice night without a lot of stress. Not sure I'd be as lucky these days - one of mine in particular doesn't like handling at all. My cats absolutely go crazy for bleach. If I wipe the counter or floor with bleach they will roll around on it and want to play or attack anything in their reach.
Posted by: polynikes at September 03, 2022 06:25 PM (PmzDg) I had one cat with the same reaction. He had a lot of different reaction to many medications and things - like the Feliway Mister stuff drove him insane. Posted by: Oldcat at September 03, 2022 06:42 PM (eoQWY) 183
have a 4 year old cat that has just started not using the litter box. This has been going on for about 10 days. I have cleaned litter boxes more often in case that was the problem. But to no avail. I put a litter box beside where he has been messing, and I am now cleaning out where he peed on things beside the litter box.

cool pet stories ... so many great realtionships.
I guess I "have a pet" now that the barn cat comes up and wants to be petted. Pretty sure it is the same cat that went missing for a couple years ... black with a white patch on the throat. But it always stayed 50 feet away before ... now it seems it was perhaps domesticated by someone, but released again? idk ... weird. Posted by: illiniwek at September 03, 2022 05:10 PM (Cus5s) Cats are very rigid in their habits, but can 'snap' into a new pattern if situations change. The death of another pet in the area can cause all sorts of shifts in habits as places and roles used by the missing cat are open for others.
