Ace of Spades Pet Thread, July 30

Welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. Sniff out your best treats, kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

Hi K.T. it's buzzion. I thought this video from Shadiversity might be good for the pet thread. It's about Medieval Dogs, their looks, breeds and who owned them.

Fascinating. Thanks, buzzion!

Kaylee-Floor.JPG

Penny (my black cat) likes to troll the Moron Horde on the evening threads, as you can see in her picture.

Jasmine loves taking naps in her warm spot in the sun.

Kaylee the Calico Kitty Cat (the cutest little cat of them all) just likes to roll around on the floor, exposing her belly. It's the ultimate sign of trust among cats, though she's not too keen on me rubbing it. Penny LOVES belly rubs, though.

Enjoy!

Well, now we understand the opening to the Book Thread a little better. Kitties with personality!

Charlie and Date.JPG

Hey K.T.

Great Pet Thread today! Here is a picture of Charlie to add to next week's pet thread! Actually, Charlie has been on the famous AOS Pet Thread before - as a one year old. Now he's older and on his first date!

Keep up the good work!

Boswell

Charlie is a charmer. Had to include that first photo so we could distinguish Charlie from his date! Heh.

anisettte.jpg

This is Anisette. I don't remember if I sent her photo in before. She's not doing too well right now -- lost a lot of weight and is losing fur. We're seeing the vet on Wednesday.

I've had her twelve years. I am not sure how old she is. She was a stray when she came into my life. She had had kittens and my neighbors and I tried to catch her and the kittens but by the time we were successful, only one kitten remained. We got her (the cat who came to be named Anisette) rabies shots and then we got her spayed. She stayed with me while she recovered. (My landlord adopted the kitten.) Anyhow, Anisette was not happy and kind of mean -- actually really mean -- but she grew on me. I hadn't intended on keeping her, but I did. Now she's royalty around here, keeping the dogs in check. She takes their beds, hangs out in their crates, drinks from their water bowls... And she's so sweet to me. She guards me at night, perched on top of me... Demands rub downs in the mornings. And remind me to feed her.

I hope she'll be okay.

Faithful Moron,
Lee Also

We have already been praying for her, and hope she will be okay, too.

enggl mastif.jpg

This is Lacey. She's our precious English Mastiff. The gentlest of gentle giants and the sweetest boss either of us ever had.

We love her to the moon and back!
Tracy and Tom

Looks sweet. Little photo, big dog!

Hi all, this is Honey who left us all to quickly this past Wednesday, July 20th so the pain is still fresh. She was a good friend and protector to my wife, daughter and I for over 12 years. Honey was definitely an ette as she knew right from wrong, good vs evil, while loving the good things in life such as sleeping, eating and long walks. I love the pet thread and wished I had sent in Honey's profile before she left us as she would have loved seeing herself on the world famous AoSHQ Pet Thread. Honey was about 8 months old when we received her on Valentines Day 2010 from our local shelter. While 13 years might be long in a dog's life it's much too short for us humans.

P.S. I'm mainly a lurker but sometimes post as Worc1.

Oh, what a fine looking dog. Her personality shines through in those photos. So sorry for your loss.

Hello,

I once in a blue moon post as ptleahy. All three of these pets have been featured on Ace of Spades Pet Thread individually. Big Poodle (black Standard Poodle, Lobi (Chi-weenie) and Pizza (daughter's Malti-poo). We were watching the daughter's dog this week, so it was a big dog party. They were interested in what my lovely wife was snacking on.

Keep up the good work.

A big dog party, or a gang of dogs giving the eye to hooman snacks? Which is it?

Love those PetMorons! Thank you for sharing your pets with us. We have some left for next week.

If you would like to send pet and/or animal stories, links, etc. for the Ace of Spades Pet Thread, the address is:

Remember to include the nic or name by which you wish to be known at AoSHQ, or let us know if you want to remain a lurker.

Until next Saturday, have a great week!

8 Well, in animal-related news, my cat trapping venture was a success. Except the cat I trapped was not the circa 3-month kitten I saw, but an older Tortie. Default assumption: it's the momma cat. She bloodied her nose a bit trying to escape the trap, but seems otherwise OK. I transferred her to a pet crate, with bedding, and dishes of food and water.

16 Asking some prayers from the AoSHQ Pet Horde.

We had a small attic fire Monday. During the chaos our cat, Boots, bolted. (Long story).

He was an outside cat until a couple of dogs got after him and he lost his tail. He's 19 pounds (even minus his tail) and doesn't take any stuff.

Current problem is the city has pulled our electric meter and we're staying 40 minutes away. We go by everyday but if he comes home looking for us, we're probably not there. Leaving food out and all but...

Belongings are fine. We're fine. The house will be demolished in a couple months.

20 My old timer, Marcus Barkus Rufus Dufus O'Malley, showed up on our porch 17 years ago in June. Hungry, frightened and with a bad hip. He was probably between 6 to 9 months old . In his prime he weighed about 60 lbs. I am guessing he weighs about 35 lbs now. He walks like a drunken sailor and occasionally falls over. He spends most of his time sleeping under the porch. My daughter wants to know when I am going to put him down. I have had to do that to many of my animals but I have always struggled with that. He doesn't seem to be in pain and 3 to 4 times a week he will accompany my wife on her morning walk. He generally wanders home after a mile or so on his own. He still occasionally follows me around anticipating that I might be doing something fun. I am not necessarily looking for advice just curious .

23 Golfman,

My husband had that happen in the 2006 house fire here. One of the Scottish Folds disappeared. They were in another house in the neighborhood but didn't find him.

Four years later, we got a call from a vet's office. Someone brought in a cat and he was chipped. Yes, it was Oblio, the missing cat. He had been living one street and a couple of blocks down that entire time. We brought him home and he lived here till he died from cancer.

Your cat will be in the neighborhood close. I'd recommend flyers in the neighborhood. Someone may see him. Hope you find him soon.

25 according to https://www.missinganimalresponse.com/ cats tend to go to ground and stay quiet as a survival response and may not respond even in they hear you.

You might try putting a camera on the food you leave to see if he is hanging about there, or search in places nearby he might have run to.

I have had many pets and some had serious medical issues that they survived and others that they did not. I never had a problem knowing when it was time. If they are fighting it, and living contently then keep with it, and when they surrender to it you can let them go then.

He was really excitable and even a little aggressive in his play last night. We wonder if he might be teething. How early does that happen with kittens?

I had a cat that lost a lot of her back leg function suddenly right around christmas. She kept on and learned to walk again and when we moved to a house with stairs leaned to patiently climb them and jump in bed and do anything she wanted to do. She lived several more years until she turned 20 and then gave me the signs - refusing food in 'that way'. When the vets were open I went in to have her tested but she let go and died hours after I dropped her off. She was never any trouble, such a good lady.

72 Ha! Forgot to mention in my over two years at Shep's now witnessed my first big fight on Wednesday. Someone (not me) left the treat jar on the table and one of the dogs got it and spilled it all over the kitchen floor. Poor Blue was laying in front of the stove on his belly, howling. Joe was grabbing for whatever he could find and Churro the same. Roscoe and Lily were in the mix. Blood everywhere..stove, floor. We thought Joe had attacked Blue but Joe was the one bleeding. I think poor Blue was just in distress. Had to grab the noise maker to stop the mayhem.

Prayers for Anisette.

Perfessor, I tried to scratch Kaylee's tummy through the screen. (Bingley LOVES tummy rubs - instant sleepy kitteh)

Skritches and treats to all the fuzzy friends!

75 We thought Joe had attacked Blue but Joe was the one bleeding. I think poor Blue was just in distress. Had to grab the noise maker to stop the mayhem.

We had a dog who chewed everything. We figured that's why he was abandoned. A sweetie, though.

Any chance that they can be outdoor doggies? Our little guy spent a lot of time indoors, but he did better when watched.

lol!! It was actually sort of funny watching these goofballs go after the treats on the floor but obviously one of them was hurt. The other two ladies were panicking. I remembered my training and grabbed the noise maker. It actually works!

79 It's not only a problem for us but him and Lily will never get adopted because he's so damn destructive.

Anxiety. Piper has it, in spades. When we were stuck in Las Vegas over Christmas, she ate the couch. I mean, down to the frame. Looked like 2 feet of snow in the house. She doesn't deal well with being alone for long. I guess we didn't need a couch after all.

She was passed through two houses before she came to us. Luckily she has Ruby, her littermate, to bounce herself off of. Most of the time that does the trick.

You never know what house will be able to cope with what others have not.

That's what my shiftmate and I think and we've tried to talk to various board members about it but so far they refuse to do anything. Roscoe was NEVER like that before. After him and Lily came back from the memory care center (didn't work out for them) it started about a week after. They need to do something.

For his whole life I kept saying Chekov D. Siberian was "on probation." I tell Stirling that if he doesn't grow into his ears and develop a bushy tail, and most especially stop the cat-on-meth impression, he's "going back." Chekov never seemed at all disturbed, and neither does Stirling.

Even if they understood, I'm sure, they'd know I'd never follow through on it.

82 Golfman, prayers for the safe return of Boots - so sorry about the fire.

Notsothoreau, loved your Oblio story. I had a cat disappear once and kept dreaming I'd get that call...

So sorry to hear about the fire and your missing cat!

I wonder if it would help if you put his litter box out, especially while you are visiting?

Prayers.

This is a good idea, and put one of your unwashed shirts out too.

She says that Russian wolfhounds weren't "borzois" until 1936.

___________

The name "Borzoi" had always existed but the Russian Wolfhound Club of America adopted it in 1936.

Our cat Rusty, a big red tabby with white, vanished one day. Quite a trick, considering we lived in a slave quarter apartment way behind another building, and he was terrified of leaving the patio. Frantic, my brother and I searched the neighboring blocks for him; nothing. Suddenly, 3 days later, there he was at the kitchen door mewing to be let in, hungry but not street dirty.

We figured later he must have accidentally run in through the back door of a shop that opened onto the patio, then huddled there, frightened of strange people, until the door was opened again and he could dash out.

87 Wolfus,
I frequently say hi to Lucy and call her "the cat that nobody loves.... that's why you were at the pound."
Of course I give her kisses and treats right afterwards, so she doesn't believe anything I say.

90 It must have been really odd for Oblio. My husband's second wife passed in 2008, so he came into a house with my animals plus what was left of my husband's animals. It was difficult for him because he didn't have much in the way of house manners. But he was well fed and loved pets. Folks in the neighborhood had been feeding him.

Good idea. Had thought about clothing. Not the litter box.

Don't tell Golflady but I'm gonna go to the house tomorrow and crack the back door open with the chain on. Enough space for Boots to slip in. A crack head would find his way in regardless. Nothing left to steal.
