The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

Well now, look at this:

coup 20210215 15.jpg

I really hate stuff like this. First, you have to ask the Times, how long have you been sitting on this? After all, as early as February 4th, ace had a piece up about how they were "struggling" to prove that Officer Sicknick was actually murdered. And then ace posted another Sicknick piece on the subject a week later that asked the question, why aren't the investigators releasing the medical report?

I will ask another question, namely, how long has the NY Times been sitting on this? How conveeeenient that we didn't hear about this until after the conclusion of the impeachment trial to publish their retraction. They surely must have known about this earlier.

My second point is that this is yet another case where this country is not served well by the 24/7 news cycle and the big rush to get the story out first before anybody else. In a chaotic event like the Jan. 6th protests, it usually takes several days, even a week or more, to get things properly sorted out. So the *absolute certainly* with which CNN, the NY Times, and the other media outlets reported that Sicknick died because he was clobbered with a fire extinguisher is, well, perhaps not surprising given their "we'd rather be first than right" method of journalism.

So basically what we have to do, for every controversial national event, is to simply ignore every bit of reporting that comes out on it for a week or maybe more. Because the only thing we can be certain of is that whatever the media prints or broadcasts about it for the first few days is going to be bullshit. Guaranteed. We're better off just turning off the TV and avoiding the online news sites entirely.

Which is actually not a bad rule for any situation.

Perhaps the covid tests are also designed to pick up flu viruses therefore anybody who actually has the flu looks like they have covid. I probably have covid now but it sure feels like the flu to me. 82 The NYT is not a news organization. It is a political propaganda generator that occasionally gets caught and then issues a retraction by blaming its reporting on someone else. It seems that once a paper or media gets a place in the psyche that it is some herald of truth or the pinnacle of professional detective work in reporting it then take years to remove that perception despite daily reminders that the media is a center of deception.

98 Surge protectors, even high quality bespoke units, are probably only good for a dozen or so spikes. Those el-cheapos, that look like a strip outlet, don't do much.

There is a brief spike when the juice is first supplied, sensitive electronics don't like this. When electricity goes out, if I can, I pull the main breaker. I wait till I know power has been restored, then put everything back on line. I don't want huge spikes or sags hitting my AC, or refeigerator, computers, anything really. When a huge thunderstorm is rolling through I just pull the main breaker ahead of time, after shutting everything down. Nearby lightning strikes can cause huge inductive voltage spikes in house wiring. It doesn't need to be a direct hit to fry your stuff.

Check your line voltage too. Sagging voltage is hard on AC motors, they try to draw more current as the voltage drops to compensate, and will burn up, is my understanding.

My house in San Diego has that too. Why? If there's a leak, you don't have to crack the foundation to get to it, easy to access in attic space. Downside is a leak up there spreads water damage EVERYWHERE. Hey, it doesn't get below freezing very often here, and not long enough to freeze water in the pipes.

Plastic surgery is one of those "less is better" things.

People get one procedure done and it looks pretty good, and then they think "if one is this good, two or three or four will be even better!" But it's not. Michael Jackson should have stopped after the first nose job, and most people should stop after the first face lift. But they can't seem to help themselves from going for one too many.

268 As you know, I was still living in Minnesota during the Floyd riots. In the immediate aftermath the local morning radio guy (broadly anti-establishment but not a political show) had a number of friends and notables on to discuss it. One of his regulars--who happens to be black, and a college professor to boot--was very quick to point out that 'we' don't really know very much about what actually happened because the media just took one particular slice of information and posted it in thousand-point font to engender a reaction. He further predicted, correctly, that when the actual investigation occurs there would be all manner of new information coming to light and this is why it's critical to wait for all the facts before jumping to conclusions 24/7 media style.

It was definitely the most mature and well-reasoned response to the whole thing that I've heard.

Im sure you are correct about the glass of water but I disagree with the first statement. I've seriously worked construction for 28 years in many climates. Wrap is not a fail safe in some extreme cases but for the most part it's fine. Mobile homes all over Ohio have water pipes under their carriage with little more than a vinyl skirting and pipe wrap to keep them from freezing.

319 We hear we might have short rolling blackouts here in CenTex, so are unplugging stuff, not doing the Monday wash, etc.
Sun is shining, which is nice, but not doing much.
I salute all Morons who live with this as a regular thing- I couldn't do it.

320 308 Faye Dunaway is another.
____________

I saw Faye in some re-run of something the other day. She had this giant set of neon white, fake teeth that looked way too big for her head. I don't know if they were dentures or veneers or what, but they were awful and made her look like a comic strip character. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at February 15, 2021

I never thought she was that hot even when she was supposed to be hot.

322 Major switch to slabs was that a lot of modern homes are in subdivisions where slab construction was easier and faster. Second reason is that labor costs were cheaper for slab as concrete technology improved. Pouring and smoothing a large area of concrete involves labor but not required to have the degree of skill that a mason does.

Masonry is a skilled labor intensive trade as is pouring sufficient footings for either masonry piers and or perimeter block walls. I am leaving aside the old stone masonry techniques which really take a master if laying a foundation for a house.

Amen. Jungle heat, rain, critters, any day over the cold.

Zero degrees with forty knot winds makes for a memorable deliberate attack on a hilltop firebase.

325 NATO chief suggests battle tanks with solar panels as militaries go green

That's right Abdul, we cannot break the armor of the infidel tanks. So what I am doing with this paintball gun? Well, let's see how long their battery life is.

326 OregonMuse -The problem isn't that the NY Times 'rushed' out their story too quickly. The problem is that they are corrupt, fascists, liars who deliberately planted a false story in the 24 hours, knowing it would elevate the seriousness of the crime.I mean, because of them at the Super Bowl last week the broadcast devoted 45 seconds to recognizing the family of the heroic police officer who 'was killed' protecting the steps of the Capital. The NY Times got exactly what they wanted. They don't give two sh*ts about 'retracting' or 'updating' the story. The damage has already been done.

330 Truly silly question.

"First, you have to ask the Times, how long have you been sitting on this?" You know they could never release it until AFTER the impeachment. They have had it since the moment of their initial LIE.

331 We have water pipes in the attic and a post tension slab. Post tension slabs and water pipes might be problematic.
