The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

During Monday's rant, I wondered whether Trump will have any 'coattails' in November that will help other Republicans, senators and representatives, get elected.

But the downticket Repubs do not have to sit passively by and wait for it to happen. There is something they can do. They can reach out and grab onto the coattails. They can climb aboard the Trump train.

They can be like Trump.

I don't think it's that difficult. They can put America first. They can eschew the globalist agenda that has somehow managed to become the default position ever since the end of WWII. They can support Trump's trade deals. He may even campaign in your district for you if you support him.

So be like Trump. Don't be like George Bush I.

Why not? What was wrong with George Bush I?

When we voted for George Bush I, we thought we were getting a third term of Reagan. Indeed, that is how he campaigned. We did not want to remember that he once dismissed Reagan's economic policies, you know, the ones that brought prosperity to America in the 80s after the stagflation of the Carter years, as "voodoo economics." We thought, maybe he learned his lesson.

Nope.

Because as soon as he was elected, he started babbling about "a thousand points of light" and "a kinder, gentler America", which was his way of extending his middle finger toward the man who had set him up to win the presidential election.

Here's an example of what that looked like:

Science fiction author Jerry Pournelle had a quiet network of conservative contacts inside the Reagan White House, promoting things like ballistic missile defense.

He recalls what happened in the one week following the inauguration of Poppy Bush in January of 1989 -- the sweeping purge. Every single one of Pournelle's conservative contacts were *gone*, replaced by what he terms "the country club set".

It takes a certain kind of hubris to look at what Reagan built and say "screw that, let's do something else."

Of course, Poppy Bush paid for his hubris: he was unelected just as soon as it was possible to unelect him, but by then the damage had been done: his utter fecklessness paved the way for the Arkansas Grifter and her horndog husband.

So, don't be like Poppy Bush. Look at Trump. See how he wins. And go and do thou likewise.

(h/t moron commenter torquewrench for the Pournelle story)

Wednesday's celebs: I used to see Cristina Raines on various TV shows and TV movies all the time back in the 70s and 80s, and then poof, she was gone. Decided to find out what happened, was afraid she'd died young or perhaps became a Hollywood drug/mental illness casualty, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn from imdb.com that she retired from acting in 1992 at the age of 40 to become a registered nurse, specializing in the care of renal dialysis patients. Good for her. And, of course, Scott Glenn, who always looks like Scott Glenn and doesn't give you a lot of different looks. They were together in a minor 1973 movie together, Hex, and also in a major movie a couple of years later, the Robert Altman film Nashville.

China IS underreporting. How bad is it? Outside of China, no idea.
As a natural virus, it's pretty low on the mortality rate.
As an engineered bio weapon, it really sucks.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I understand inducing fear.
But what good does that do? Once everyone gets better, they're gonna be pissed. You ain't invading then. If it's a bio weapon, you want wide swaths of population dying off.

Signs are predictive of the size of the population who is enthusiastic about supporting a particular candidate and wants you to know about it.

There's quite a bit of overlap with that group and the group of people who is very enthusiastic about forcing you to do what they think is the right thing.

131 I read somewhere (maybe the Twitters, so grab the salt) that the WuFlu spread so readily in China because

1. They didn't know what they were dealing with;

B. They are frequently malnourished and usually packed together tightly;

iii. Their public health system is shit; and

d. The Communist party tried to keep a lid on it for a critical period.

We don't have those disadvantages (but the Iranians do, which is why it's spreading there).

A couple of office libtards were blaming Trump for

their 401k losing thousands this week over the Coronavirus hysteria. "He

didn't do anything to stop it." I wonder if they gave him credit for

the Dow being up 10,000 ( prior to this week) since he's been president.

I'm guessing that was Barry's doing

This
is exactly what I was saying in the art thread. Everyone is blaming
Trump for the stock market crash and saying it is the most critical part
of the US economy but just last week they were saying only the rich
benefits from the stock market and it doesn't benefit anyone in the
middle class.

Fvcking idiots.

187 RE: Coronavirus

We need better data about the spread. Cases that have been caught from people returning from an infected area should be separated to those spread locally. We have reports of 60 nations who have it, but much of that is people returning from Wuhan, Milan, or Iran. With that data we could easily map the areas where its spreading and where its just treating people who caught it elsewhere. AFAIK, 100% of the people who have it in the Western Hemisphere got it from overseas and or from a close relative.

There's always going to be a small but measurable percentage of the population who says "ooh I heard scary things I'm scared!" and this moves approval ratings up and down. But as soon as a few days go by and nothing happens and this group finds their binkie, they go right back to thinking everythings fine.

Also, if there was substance to any of the complaints against Trump, then it would be valid to worry. But when it's all just shrieking and yelling about something that hasn't even happened? Come on.

Trump and Pence are doing exactly what they should be doing, and that includes NOT freaking out and acting as stupidly as their critics are acting.

+++++++++++
Here's where I'm at. China can't be trusted and there are many potential interpretations. Is China overreacting? Maybe. Is it way worse than reported and China is lying? Maybe. Does China actually know next to nothing and they're just doing *everything* out of panic? Maybe. Does China know it isn't *that* big a deal but are overreacting on purpose because they were so excoriated in the past of SARS and H1N1? Maybe.

In short, we know little and can't trust the primary source of data. As a result, I land on "take reasonable measures and don't burn down the world unless we learn it is necessary."

Restricting travel from known outbreak areas is reasonable. Quarantining people from known outbreak areas, or who are symptomatic is reasonable. Fast-tracking vaccination development is reasonable.

Panicking and locking down every aspect of life because of the demon virus is not reasonable, at least not right now.

Will hundreds of thousands get sick? Probably. Will hundreds of thousands die from the virus? No.
That is irrelevant. Once hysteria takes over that's where the real danger/damage comes from. Schools will close - they'll have no choice. Businesses will close. The economy will likely stop moving altogether.

I wouldn't be surprised to see another 2008-style bank bailout within a week by the way. They've been given too good of an excuse to wipe away even more of their bad debt without accepting any blame.

That's how many people would have to die from gun wounds a year on average. Seems like someone might have noticed that.

That is roughly how many people die of gunshot per year. To get to 15M over a 13 year period, it would have to be the number per day. Which is how Joe got it wrong. Someone told him (or an equally clueless advisor) the yearly rate and he mistook it for a daily rate and did the same math you did in reverse.

Guys, guys. You have to remember the rules, which are merely amplified but not different with Trump.

1. When a Democrat is president all good news flows from their beneficent rule and wise policies. All bad news stems from headwinds, evil others, or obstructionist Republicans.

2. When a Republican is president, flip the descriptors and causality arrows of number one.

The stock market is related to people's beliefs about the future earnings of a company either through appreciation and/or dividends etc.

The actual economy and various events that might affect that valuation in the future at any one moment is where the predictions about the future come from.

Thus, actual economy is causal, the other's valuation is derived from the latter.

A surgeon replied with a story about a guy who had shoved a potato up his ass, was too embarrassed to tell anyone, and simply waited and prayed for the asstato to become dislodged.

The asstato did not. It remained. Until he finally appeared at the hospital in mortal danger, and this poor woman had to cut him open and remove the blackened, rotten asstato along with a huge amount of impacted, rancid feces.

386 321, There is a saying that a stock is oversold. A lot of times people and programmed selling panic reducing a stock far below its expected long term value.

This will pass too, it is not the black death, it is not WWI or WWII, and it does little to affect the overall health of the global economy in the year to two year time range.

Bounceback in the economy is usually quite rapid as you can see from the 1920 bounceback from the Spanish flu and WWI aftermath in 1918-1919.

The flu might reduce GDP growth to merely 0 for the next quarter or two but then it might rebound to 5-6 percent in the third and fourth quarter--thus averaging 3 percent.

In this case, the productive capacity is not destroyed and the death toll seems to be primarily the aged and sick rather than what the Spanish flu did.

If if makes it here in force, quite a few people will lose loved ones, perhaps particularly in some sort of retirement rest homes if no precautions are taken. Health care workers, if in a saturated zone, may also be at heightened risk.

Thus, in a couple of weeks or a month or so, once the risk estimates become more accurate, markets will look past the epidemic and view long term again. The underlying fundamentals haven't changed much and won't in a mere quarter or two.

Posted by: Tami at February 28, 2020 12:01 PM (cF8AT)

I think Count Dracula was involved in the Potato story.

Posted by: Tom Servo at February 28, 2020 12:03 PM (Kpl3J)

He's also shoved one in his ear apparently...

395 Loved Jerry Pournelle. His estate should hire a top flight writer to rewrite The Prince and the Falkenberg stories to take advantage of current history. Imagine Trump being defeated and the deep state creating the Co Dominion. I can.

398 WRT asstatos:

It all depends on whether you're talking one of those tiny ones you get in TV dinners, or one of those VW Beetle-sized ones they have at all-you-can-eat buffets to try to get you to fill up on potato rather than making a third trip to the steak and shrimp line.

If the latter, only a trained professional like Peter Buttigieg should make the attempt.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at February 28, 2020 12:07 PM (lbYzk)

399 I certainly noticed that also, and it is puzzling. My best guess is that most investors are not reliant upon it as a hedge, but rather as a commodity critical to manufacturing, which they expect to fall.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc.,etc. at February 28, 2020 12:04 PM (xSo9G)

Silver market I could understand that.

But Gold has historically been used as more of a hedge.

So only thing I can think of is that the big investors are keeping assets in cash, getting ready to buy back in after the correction.

Posted by: Romeo13 at February 28, 2020 12:08 PM (NgKpN)

400 > Gold is down too, which defies logic to me.

Coronavirus can live for up to two years on the surface of a gold ingot.

It is known.

402 Wow, silver was going up, but is down over the last 10 days.

Posted by: Romeo13 at February 28, 2020 11:58 AM (NgKpN)

No silver has been going up all week until last night. It's dropped from the mid $18's to $16.80 in the past 24 hours. I've been buying every day for the past month.

403 377, You are a poll troll, begone. No one cares what you spew.

Presidential approval ratings fluctuate and reflect people's fleeting moments and reflections of how coronavirus panic appears particular moment. They last about as long as an icicle in July heat.

What you should fear little dude, is that DJT will look better than ever when the market and coronavirus panic ends and little actual damage is done. Your precious Dem candidates words will come back to haunt them. Just as it has been from Russia Russia Russia, the Mueller disgrace, the Ukrainian gambit, and other putrid panics promoted by your real boss, Lord of Lies.

404 402, Market panic is beginning to break and people bidding it up precious metals on the idea of Zombie time are going to get hammered. There has been no fundamental change in the market nor productive capacities to make things. It apparently does not affect the productive workers that much. This is not the apocalypse that people are looking for.

You would have done better to invest in n95 masks as silver sucks as an antiviral protection measure.

==========

Signs are not a terribly predictive measure, but it is encouraging.

Seriously...with one day left to the SC primary, I've seen an increase of one sign in the last two days. It was a Tom Steyer sign.

So, that brings the rough total of signs I've seen to about 15.

The impressive thing is that the people are willing to show their support if Pres Trump. Around Michigan people are afraid to even say they support Trump.
