The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

( *puts on Concerny hat* )

Barring any unforeseen and unlooked for catastrophe, I think it's safe to say that Trump will win in 2020. The collection of dwarves, mental midgets, doddering old commies and clueless wonders simply can't keep up with the Orange Scalp Weasel. The Democratic candidates have been ill-served by their party, ill-served by their allies in the media, and ill-served by the own hubris. They have been duped into believing their own bullsh1t, and it will certainly cost them the presidency.

So, the question I have is, how long are Trump's coattails? Or, more precisely, how long will they be 9-10 months from now? It's fun to see the various groups such as 'Blacks For Trump', 'Women For Trump', 'Latinos for Trump' etc. making noise at Trump rallies. It's also encouraging to see Brandon Straka's "Walkaway" movement, of people who are sick to death of the craziness that their Democratic Party has been wallowing in for the past several years and are leaving.

But how big is this movement, really? And if they're walking away from the Democrats, it is not clear what they're walking to. It seems doubtful that all of the walkaways have suddenly decided to become laissez-faire conservatives. So maybe they'll become Greens or some other third party, or perhaps just sit on their hands.

I'm old enough to remember the wishful thinking in 2008 about the so-called PUMA (Party Unity, My Ass) movement in 2008, where Democrats, particularly Democratic women, got royally pissed off because Obama had succeeded in snatching the nomination away from Hillary, the heir presumptive. Then these disaffected democrats would hand the election to the GOP. Well, that didn't work out so well. Either the numbers weren't so great as we thought, or the PUMAs held their nose and voted for Obama, anyway.

So even though I am reasonably certain of Trump's re-election, I don't know if his popularity will carry over into the down-ticket races. Because I'm also old enough to remember the 1972 election where Nixon won a yuuge electoral college landslide, but the rest of the GOP benefitted hardly at all. They only won 12 seats in the House while the Democrats picked up two Senate seats, increasing their majority.

There is nothing I would like to see more than the Democrats, particularly those in the House, being forced to pay a heavy price for carrying on the shampeachment follies, say, lose 50-75 seats or more. But I don't know if this will happen. Trump has shown that he has a cross-party appeal that I think is pretty much unique. I never saw ex-Democrats jumping up and down for Marco Rubio or even Ted Cruz, who was my man in 2016 before Trump ran the table.

So this is why I am wearing my concerny hat this morning. I am afraid that Trump will win, but the Democrats will retain control of the House, and maybe even pick off a Senate seat or two. And then he investigations and impeachments will continue unabated.

The GOP is not.

GOP is about 30% nationwide.

So now comes the question. Why SHOULD a party that is unpopular, and only has 30% of the electorate as members, have a stranglehold on all the levers of power of the most powerful country in the World?

What the F has the GOP accomplished (sans Trump) to garner my support?

89 How old is David Frum -- 15?
"One of the ideas that Donald Trump tried to spread in 2016 is that
Hillary Clinton was somehow physically incapable of managing the
presidency. It's audacious, Donald Trump was the oldest presidents ever,
one of the fattest presidents ever, the least physically capable
president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in a wheelchair.

Frum continued, "He can't pick up a ball, never mind throw it. But he
was able to put in the minds of tens of millions of people the idea that
Hillary Clinton, who is a very vigorous woman in good health, was
somehow too sick to be president."

That's a lot to unpack there.
Fat? He's banging a gorgeous super-model.

Physically incapable? He has more tangible accomplishments, things he built, things that will last long after the world has bothered even asking 'who is this Davis Frum guy?'

And then there are his many measurable accomplishments in office: miles and miles of a border wall, kick-ass employment and economic numbers, excellent new trade deals. . .

159 I think Bernie could win.

His support is very loud and zealous but not very big. The folks you see at his rallies? Lots of them but... that's nearly all of them. Trump's rallies are a small slice of his support.

However, if something really ghastly happened to make people turn to big daddy gubmint like the storm that hit NYC and caused some flooding (and was overhyped as the storm of the century that would murder billions) in 2012. Remember that? Romney still had momentum after that disastrous first debate with Obama where he showed up stoned out of his gourd and mumbled his way through. Then the storm hit and everyone went "but if bad things happen I want government to give me stuffs"

So... we'll see.

You see, I'm operating on the assumption that Bernie's getting the nomination no matter what.

The goal now isn't to get anyone else the nomination, but to make the process in the Democratic primary last as long as possible.

So, assuming Bernie's the nominee no matter what, how should I vote, I ask myself. Well, it's not for Bernie, since he's gonna have the nomination, it should be for the kind of person who can keep going into Super Tuesday and beyond.

Steyer has been spending millions and months advertising in SC, and it's made his support. He'll come out 2nd or 3rd, depending on the size of Biden's fall, and he'll have more delegates than the other billionaire Bloomberg. How he'll perform after that is very much up in the air, but it gives another big monied name some momentum to just muddy the waters.

196 How old is David Frum -- 15?

So when he is golfing, which he did manage a round during the holiday break at Mar a Lago, he has someone else pick up the ball and put his marks down?

I've seen Trump in person several times. He's not fat. Is he a 26 year old triathlete, of course not, and most of his public appearances require wearing a Kevlar vest under his shirt.

Frum can't understand that unlike Obama, Trump doesn't need to be seen in some ridiculous light of riding a girls bike , or throwing a bowling ball in the gutter. Despite his love of picking brackets, I don't remember seeing Obama shooting hoops either.

Are we supposed to believe Bernie is out running half marathons every morning? We know Biden likes to paddle around in the pool in the nude, I personally have no need to see that.

Nonsense. Nobody with any sense believes China's numbers. Now that it's hit Europe the real numbers will come out. In three days there's hundreds of cases in Italy. One guy in S. Korea infected 200? Just wait.

231 I'd like to think Trump will get re-elected, but I have just a sinking feeling in my stomach that the media will somehow drag that socialist louse across the finish line and/or it will be a combination of factors contributing to it.

Economic downturn due to coronavirus, coronavirus getting bad in the US and them blaming Trump for it, the whole popular vote cult stealing EVs, straight up cheating in broad daylight with vote counting, etc.
I don't know. The straight up level of impropriety the mooks in the government have been openly displaying (whereas they used to at least strive to pretend they weren't completely bent) just has me thinking the worst will happen. I never thought Trump would win in '16 either... that was one hell of a shock the morning after.

If Biden wins SC and Obama decides to "save" the Democrat party and endorse him, I could absolutely see Biden taking the nom. It's an unlikely scenario, but not impossible.

And Bloomberg may have shit the bed in the debate, but who knows who he could buy off and somehow steal the nom

As we were leaving, xe/xhe told us to be sure to come back the end of March for the gay burlesque show that would be held in the upstairs "chapel" (a venue used for weddings --- restaurant is in a gorgeous old mansion). Cory was probably hopeful we'd react negatively, but we smiled and I said, "Sounds like fun!" as we hurried out the door to catch our Uber.

312 I don't believe it can spread far and fast in countries that have good hygiene.

*******

Yup,. Among other reasons. Lots of factors go into the spread of a coronavirus.

Interesting to note that it took China 5 days to go from 500 confirmed cases to 2000

Outside of China it took 11 days to go from 500 to 2000.

We are starting to see a secondary increase in cases (outside China), but it is not as steep as the original. Is this due to decreased R0 from mutation, weather trends (spring is in the air), living conditions, efficacy of public health measure? I don't know. The final tale is yet to be told.

And let me pre-empt those who say "You don't believe China do you?" by pointing out that this particular comparison would be even more favorable/optimistic if China is underreporting its numbers.

351 I think the Republican Party needs to start planning for what happens in 2024. Trump is unique, how do we keep this spirit of challenging the system alive, in the face of an Establishment that will see it as high time to return to business as usual?

We have a unique opportunity here to not only win elections, but to renew the Republican brand and broaden our appeal to disaffected Democrats. This means a little introspection is needed. The first thing to do is take inventory. What do we keep, what do we toss?

I say it's time to toss the conservative label. Too many Bushes, McCains, and Romneys have misused it and stained it. It's a ruined brand. Conservatism, to the younger generation, evokes an image of stodgy old people trying to legislate their morality, and trying to Americanize the Middle East by force. Let them keep it, and we'll never have to worry about them mounting a serious challenge.

Are we conservatives at all? What are we trying to preserve? If it's the Constitution and the Rule of Law, we already lost. If we're fighting those fights, we are no longer conservatives, we are a reform movement.

A focus on reform would allow us an easy title "Reform Republicans", and convey a clear vision for the future. We don't want to radically alter the system, we want to repair it. We don't want revolution, we want slow and steady evolution, from the America we were, to the America we have always believed in, where all can be equal under the law and reap the endless blessings of liberty.

Having succeeded in our quest to Make America Great Again, we could sell Make America Greater as an endless quest to bring out the best in us, and continue improving.

388 That's what's bringing the market down now and is
the big cloud I see on the economic horizon. It has huge potential to
disrupt the supply chain - thanks to the elites who sold us out to
China. But they won't be blamed - Trump will.

393 I'm also old enough to remember the 1972 election where Nixon won a yuuge electoral college landslide, but the rest of the GOP benefitted hardly at all.
_______

A major reason for that, though, was that Nixon's campaign was targeted solely on building up his own margin, and did not work toward providing coattails. I remember that well, and there were many Republicans - especially conservatives - who were pissed about it.

So if those supply chain failures collapse the markets ... will Trump be blamed? I think he might be praised for trying fighting China control of our markets. Many vital interests need to return to America, for our national security if nothing else.

And supposedly China controls much of the drug market, and the necessary ingredients even for those made in India. Also the meth and Heroin markets run through Mexico need their supplies from China as well ... 20 years of bowing and bending to China ...

We'll probably never know the facts, but something to keep in in mind is that a place like Wuhan has over ten million people living in it, and that's not even a big city in China. By comparison the largest US city (NYC) has just over 8 million.

And unlike here, they don't have great sewage, ready hot water, top notch health care, and everyone lives packed in like sardines. They eat unhealthy crap, don't care for themselves very well or clean much, etc. So a nasty flu is going to have a pretty devastating effect.

561 351 Cato,

I would agree but one of the necessary elements is to basically push the Chamber of Commerce folks to the edge of the coalition if you want a broad based party. These are the folks that funded the Paul Ryans, McConnells, the Bushes, etc. What they want is cheap labor and open borders.

There has long been a gap between both parties as the Gephardts, Barbara Jordan, and even Bernie Sanders in the past did not want cheap labor but were overruled by their uniparty Dem folks aka New Democrats. As the smokestack Dems waned, the power of their new enviro-techno-financial services elites wanted open borders with cheap servile class labor and free trade.

The Republican elites have been for cheap labor for workers since the Great Depression due to CoC folks disliking labor unions and labor regulations and for open borders on trade which buttressed large corporations in outsourcing and moving production abroad.

Both parties dabbled in using the military since WWII to do nation building which always fell short of the promises and cost the U.S. dearly in blood and treasure.

Thus, a wide expanse in the middle was exploited by Trump in 2016 where average voters approved of fixing the border, using the military only in instances of a threat to the US, and better trade deals with jobs returning to the U.S.

To prevent reversion 2024, the Republican party must basically break with hitting up big money donors and move to collecting much smaller amounts from average citizens. Membership type financing is used in other countries so maybe try that here. That also means that the rancid state party apparatus must be purged of the self-dealing politico-media/communication/outreach folks. Dollars spent on GOTV activities are far better than spending huge amounts of money on robocalls, tv and online ads, etc.

It should also support campaign finance restrictions which at the very least should force disclosure of every dollar spent by donors in dark money and superpacs. No more washing money through shell organizations. Every dollar should be tracked and all reports should be made promptly.

Build momentum for a constitutional amendments on campaign finance and term limits which are both popular. Make the mega donors spend their time fighting these popular measures instead of rolling back our constitutional protections--go on the attack.

2+% move in a single day, though, is a big move. Not circuit-breaker big (I think that is at 5% for the market, higher for individual stocks, but I don't remember), but it's big.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting s different outcome. Great work Netanyahu?

638 2+% move in a single day, though, is a big move.

And yet gas goes up or down by 4% (10¢ all the time here. Nobody notices.

639 It's kinda funny, when you think about it. The way the Lefty billionaires are all in for socialism will make them first against the wall no matter whose revolution comes.

Are they just suicidal? Have fantasies of mobs with torches and pitchforks storming their estates?

No comprende, for realz.

643 I hate when these old celebrity geezers spout off their political views.

I agree, what's the point? Nobody cares about your political viewpiont. IF someone asks, say "what are you talking to me about that for? I'm an actor/baseball player/singer. Nobody turns to me for political wisdom. Nobody should."

Add in that the Fed and Treasury Dept tanked the economy mid election? Caused a panic that led to the recession?

Note, the supposed structural problems with those toxic derivatives? are still there. Not a single change was made to that market. They still exist. They were never 'wound down'.

And the Fed used the bailout money to consolidate the banking industry. Picking winners and losers

646 Say 30 years for a copyright, slightly more than a patent. 100 years for a trademark, and the next renewal is for big bucks.

The corporate donations will flow.

Patent life now is 20 years from date of first filing (i.e., several years before the patent completes prosecution and can be enforced), worldwide.
