Heh. People will try anything. Can you really get high from smoking dried-out banana skins?
I smoked banana peels. I worked in the banana fields on a kibbutz and we had bananas all over the place. So, one day we dried out a bunch of them (the stringy parts, really) and smoked them up. I got a headache. Not very enjoyable. "They're all evil. Is twitter silencing conservatives? Google now has an extension that will change pro-life to anti-choice. Facebook, well they ban anything seen as conservative. I really wish there were some non-progressive options out there in the tech world."
Unless these options are unabashedly conservative and only recruit conservative/non-prog people to work in them, you're only delaying the inevitable. And not just that, but also "free" nations like Germany are "negotiating" with Facebook to update their TOS for citizens in order to preemptively label, say, unkind comments about "migrants", as racist and thus nuke them from the site. Seeing stuff like this *almost* puts me on Team Let It Burn, but I think the burning times are inevitable regardless of my affiliation with Team LIB. Herewith a cat story. I am not a cat person. I haven't known any cats very well.
I live in a house with a small group of friends. An informal family. We're a sitcom, boys and girl, old and young, black and white, dog and cat. The mistress of the house takes in strays, including the first two dogs, the cat, and me. The cat got along swimmingly with the dogs. They roll around and play together. The cat also resolutely ignored me for four years. The cat, I'm sure, has ESP. The cat started buddying up to me about a month before the mistress took in another stray, in this case a boxer who really, really wants to eat the cat. So now the cat basically lives with me. Good god cats could teach Obama a thing or two about narcissism. It's all cat all the time. Oh, you want to type on your laptop? No, I want to curl up on your laptop. You will pet me now. NOW. I shall stick my face in your face until you do exactly what I want. Dogs at least are all cute and dopey and act as if they really like you. The cat is like, "if you do all the things I want I may not murder you in your sleep". Posted by: Bandersnatch, Opus/Bill the Cat 2016 at February 20, 2016 11:25 PM (1xUj/) 62

I shall stick my face in your face until you do exactly what I want. Dogs at least are all cute and dopey and act as if they really like you. The cat is like, "if you do all the things I want I may not murder you in your sleep". *** And he will promptly wrap you around his little paw. Over the last ten years I've cared for more cats than I'd care to admit. Each one has tugged at my heart. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at February 20, 2016 11:35 PM (8PbKi) 104

The U.S. Air Force still plans to prematurely retire the A-10.
According to the husband, they can't pay for the F-35 while funding the A-10 and Gen. Walsh bet his career on the F-35, so that's why they're trying to shove the Warthog out the door. None of this debacle has made me happy, especially since the A-10 is my second favorite plane (my husband's being the first, of course). Speaking of the A-10, did you see that ACC has pulled back the B-1Bs that were tasked with bombing VagISIL? So no more BONEs blowing up jihadis.
And why? Those planes need their cockpits upgraded. Um so ACC and USAF there were 100 B-1Bs built. You've got to have at least twenty that can still fly? Or did you blow your budget on battling climate change and trans-genders in the military? Posted by: Anna Puma at February 20, 2016 11:38 PM (fZ8hA) 117

I sense more than a slight ideological grudge against USAF - the branch all the others love to hate.
How about some links about the Navy's total lack of commitment to CAS? Why do they get a pass (and before you say "Harrier", it has all the problems of F-35 and then some). Speaking of naval aviation, they have dropped whole mission sets while retiring numerous types without replacement, so black shoe admirals could keep building unneeded billion dollar destroyers (and prematurely retire very capable ships without replacement). Where's the outrage there? I'd argue like hell that the nation's security has been far more undermined by the erosion of naval aviation than retiring the A-10 would cause. $13 billion dollar Zumwalt? LCS? Tumblehome? The navy being in the vanguard of every jackals diversity craze imaginable? 300 ship surface fleet while naval aviation is in tatters? But no every gawdamn week its knee USAF in the crotch over the A-10, which has at best a marginal capability over other types and would be absolute dead meat over any kind of decent air defense network. Oh.....right. "Commander M." Gotcha. Parochialism must be served. The Navy and Marines love to scream about the mote in the Air Force's eye, hoping no one will notice the giant redwood in their own. I do not believe the premise that the maintenance costs of a mature airframe that has been proven to be perhaps the best warplane built in a generation is within several orders of magnitude of the cost of the F-35. It's a fucking rounding error. That's the military playing with numbers. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 20, 2016 11:41 PM (Zu3d9) 125

Posted by: Grump928(C) says Free Soothie! at February 20, 2016 11:37 PM (rwI+c) I think this is a good solution, but don't they always trot out the "Do not have infrastructure" argument every time it comes up? It makes logical sense to me however: a plane that the air force does not want but is desperately loved by the ground forces, being in the same service should make things easier to coordinate (maybe), etc. Posted by: Aetius451AD at February 20, 2016 11:41 PM (iHjB5) 127

Tatumblogo, you must be new here.
Oh kami have we keelhauled the Navy repeatedly over the LCS fiasco. LCS-3 is now stranded overseas with an engineering casualty that is strangely similar to the casualty its newer sister ship LCS-5 suffered. To whit stripped gears. Or how the JSF/F-35 has turned into TFX II the Sequel because apparently it can't fly or fight. And it only carries 125 rounds for its 25mm gun which still has issues compared to the A-10 and its 30mm with more than 1,000 rds.. The seeds of NavAir going Tango Uniform go all the way back to the Clinton era Peace Dividend which killed off the A-6F and new build F-14Ds. So NavAir was forced to put even more of its eggs into the F-18 Mafia basket. Posted by: Anna Puma at February 20, 2016 11:48 PM (fZ8hA) 161
Hypothetical: which type should USAF cut: A-10 or F-15?
If you don't answer the former you're either an idiot or so emotionally involved you're incapable of thinking straight. And yet at present the evil incompetent USAF (how come Navy and Marines never get knee-capped over F-35, when it was the Marines demand for STOVL that fundamentally compromised the design in the first place?) has more A-10s in service than F-15s. Wild Weasel in the USAF was originally assigned to F-100 Super Sabers but they could not keep up with the F-105 strike packages. Thus the F-105F was quickly transformed into the F-105G where they initially took the innards of an ALQ pod, did a QRC, and slapped the halves to the underside. And the Standard ARM as used by the F-105Gs started out life as a Navy SAM missile.

Anna Puma. F-11 Tiger in Blue Angels mark and livery.
Imagine what those old jets would do with a modern powerplant in 'em? Sure, they lack the wing area and electronics, etc. But most of their sins were due to being very underpowered by today's standards. A wave-off at the fantail was far more nip n' tuck then, than now. And speaking of medium delivery, the FB-111 was one hell of a graceful plane in the air, even if it was a few tens of thousands of pounds too fat for either fighter or carrier standards. That old saw about "if it looks right, it'll fly right", gave us one hell of a lot of absolutely beautiful planes, didn't it. There was a rumor back in the day that eating a tablespoon of nutmeg would make you trip.
Anyone ever go there? No, but I knew an ER doc who said that hippies who tried it got very sick and ended up puking all over the ER and generally freaking out. Apparently nutmeg takes a couple hours to produce any effects, so the trippers would decide the first dose wasn't working, so they'd take some more and . . . then ask a buddy to call 911 when the nausea really hit. Was surprised how many in the last thread said, they absolutely would not vote for the Donald. I'd say about 15 upvotes in that regard.
Posted by: qdpsteve at February 20, 2016 11:12 PM (ntObR) Voting for Trump will be one of the most difficult things I've ever done if he wins the GOP nomination. A contest between Trump and Hillary will be like choosing between Huey Long and Evita Peron. It's that bad. They--Trump and Hillary--are that bad. I'm guessing Hillary wins. She won't be indicted for her crimes and Trump's greatest political negative in purely pragmatic terms--the number of people who absolutely will not vote for him--is simply too high, in my view. I still don't get it. I look at Trump and see a dime store demagogue. I mean, the guy's brazenly transparent, at least to me. Trump supporters look at him and see something else. But how can you see something else? For just one example, Trump gamed the system to eminent domain the shit out of a little old lady to build a limousine parking garage. Seriously, as a Trump supporter, how in the world do you rationalize that kind of behavior? What he did was venal and petty to the point of a cartoon villain rubbing his hands and twirling his mustache. Do you not get that sort of thing is--oh what's the word? Oh, yeah: Wrong. Evil. Bad. Reprehensible. Morally bankrupt. In the end, we get what we deserve. I just never saw this one coming: Divine retribution in the form of a reality TV star. Will people really smoke banana peels?
Well, i don't know. But one time in high school a friend and i were refused the sale of duct tape because we were under 18. When we asked why we were told it was because kids could roll it up and smoke it. Well, being teenagers and having nothing better to do i guess, my friend decided to take some duct tape (which i guess we managed to get somehow!) and roll it up. Well morons, let me share with you that we never could figure out how people smoked that, it just caught fire! But you know, we never would have thought to try if that sales clerk hadn't mentioned it. Funny how that works. Posted by: Sugar Plum Fairy #176-671 at February 21, 2016 12:16 AM (ACs58) 296

ThunderB there is one F-105D with a confirmed MiG kill that has had its nose art censored twice.
F-105D "Cherry Girl" had its nude nose art painted over while in Vietnam. Someone found it offensive because the naked gal had the probe refueling port right between her spread legs. After restoration with the nose art, it got censored again. The amazing thing is the location of the refueling port of the F-105. It is located in front of the pilot and slightly to the left. Since it takes a 13ft ladder to get into an F-105 cockpit, the only people who would ever see the nose art are the guys in the boom operator's position on the KC-135s or in the tower. My "end of the world" story:
When we lived on Lackland AFB, we had what I called "Dogfight Fridays." Almost every Friday, the F-16s would be up and chasing each other near our house (about 2 miles from the flightline). Fun to watch on a clear day from our yard. But one Friday I happened to be walking though the kitchen, and there was a ear-splitting roar right above my head like the world had ended. I ran outside, thinking that our house had been hit or something, only to see the tail of an F-22 on afterburner as he was chasing down an F-16. I think my heart started beating again once he was over the horizon....... Posted by: pookysgirl at February 21, 2016 12:24 AM (K27gs) 339

The F8F aka 'Jelly Bean' was a nice looking little fighter that was inspired by the FW-190. Of course with a fire breathing R-2800 under the cowl, it was going to be a rocket. And it arrived in the Pacific Theater just in time to see the war end.
Amazing F8F footnotes. The US Navy granted Grumman permission to build for Al Williams a pure civilian Bearcat. Minus the armor and guns that thing was a ball of fire, it would scoot. Grumman also built from -1 and -2 parts another Bearcat that they used for company business. Apparently, about as many members live north of the Straits as down here, so the old location was a good compromise. It's gone now, so we need a new location. The general opinion is that the new site might be the best, as moving around would fragment the club, moving south would lose perhaps 1/3, and this new place seems to be an excellent fit ... and with barbecuing facilities.
Posted by: Anna Puma at February 20, 2016 11:48 PM (fZ8hA) I had to read that 3 times. Skip all others and drop the coin for a bottle of Pernod absinthe. There's other brands out there, but they are teh suck.... Me? When I've had two, I can see dreamy green flashes when I close my eyes, and I have the most vivid dreams afterward.... Really very nice, but definitely an "ever now and then" sort of thing. Where is it really going to be? North to 24, then through the tunnel. First exit. Go north into the hills. There's talk about alternating sites each month, one north, one south. Ok, that's three. So here goes.
I went for my first run since surgery last November. It's a half mile walk to the greenbelt, and as I turned the corner to go from the sidewalk to the greenbelt, there's a family maybe 20 yards away, mom, dad, kid, dog. Dad has dog on a leash, but it's a retractable leash and he's paying attention to kid. As I get closer, the leash keeps extending until dad and kid are on the far left of the path and the dog, a fat little bulldog, is on the right. Ok, no problem, I duck into the grass and keep going. About five feet away, dog charges me. There's a severe slope to my right leading to a drainage ditch. So I try to step past and over the dog, but I didn't quite make it. He took a good bite to my left knee, and that fucker had a strong bite. Mom and dad were like "did he bite you?" No, dumbass, my leg just decided to start leaking fluid just now. It's all good, I dumped some peroxide on the cuts after the run, and now it's just swollen and a little painful. But still, if you own a dog, don't be that dog owner. I also realized how much I've mellowed out lately. A year or two ago I would have killed the dog and put the owner in the hospital. The gestation periods of the Eurofighter and F-35 are interesting in how long they have been.
Eurofighter Typhoon traces its lineage all the way back to 1981 after the collapse of the European Combat Fighter program. And they expected to have this plane flying in 1987. I would say they thoroughly missed the mark. The F-35 is only 5 years younger when the USMC went looking for a replacement for the AV-8 Harrier. That program was called Joint Advanced Strike Technology because USMC was teaming up with Britain. And the F-35 has followed the Eurofighter in missing its in service date. Now compare to the LWF competitors. The YF-16 and YF-17. The requirements were issued in 1972 for the LWF. And the first YF-16 took flight in January 1974, a mere 22 months after General Dynamics had received funding with the YF-17 taking flight in June 1974. And by 1980, more than 100 F-16s were already in service with the USAF. Posted by: Anna Puma at February 21, 2016 12:59 AM (fZ8hA) 460

I was trying to explain this to someone the other day -- if you're thinking of threatening someone, or you're thinking of going lawless and doing some bullshit vandalism slapfight....kill him. It's a single act that will settle all claims, it's less traceable than repeated acts or vandalism, and it's less traceable than threats. Suing someone just creates a paper trail. And, chances are, if you're seriously considering killing someone, there are a couple of dozen other people also thinking about it -- and many of them will have stupidly threatened the guy or committed random acts of vandalism and would be better suspects. But if it's not worth killing over, knock off the slapfights or petty crimes -- the price for such ineffective bullshit far exceeds any benefits. Write the guy a nasty letter or shoot out his windows, and you have a 50% chance of going to jail for multiple years. Show no emotion and shoot him the first chance you get, you have a 2% chance of going to jail for life (assuming you're smart enough to pick up your brass). You know, watching some of the old shows on MeTV, I was pleasantly surprised to see some of them actually correctly potray what a suppressed shot sounds like. Sounds like a shot, just not as loud. Peter Gunn did it. Killer was waiting in his apartment, and he and Gunn had a little shoot out. Gunn's gun made a big bang, and the killer's gun made a little bang. However, I read there was ONE revolver that could be successfully suppressed. Can anyone guess what it is? Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale at February 21, 2016 01:38 AM (hVdx9) 537

But in the movies and TV shows, they use "silencers" on revolvers all the time. Makes a little "peww" sound.
And there were some others I noticed that too. Posted by: publius **** So Hollywood had it right once upon a time? That is surprising. Glad you got out of that OK as you did. You should post a link to that post where you described the accident. What a clusterf#ck.
Posted by: Farmer at February 21, 2016 01:33 AM (o/90i) I put it on the ONT last night. I don't want to link it. More fun and games today here at home. First off, my well pump has died. Draws current, no pumpie. Four hundred feet down the well, it is. Both the start and run windings pull juice, but not enough to pop the 15 amp breaker. Weird. I think I will try jolting it with a shot of 220 tomorrow. Can't hurt anything; if it starts, and continues running once once put back to 120, I win. If jolting it with 220 fails to start it, or burns it out, well, it had to be pulled from the well anyway. So, then I drove my 2008 Suburban to town this afternoon to get mail and grub. Park across the street from the post office, pull key part-way out of ignition, close door, and the damn thing locks itself up! So I stand there, doggeh locked in truck, and me locked out. I walked a block down the street to the bar, met a neighbor there, and got a ride to my house, fetched the spare key, and the remote on it opened the door OK. Note to self: take key out all the way! Serious question; Does microprinting on the firing pin actually work? And is it against the law to swap firings pins (usually an easy job with plentiful parts) on guns that have them? Would you know if you have one of those if you bought second-hand, such as a marking on the slide or barrel? Asking for a friend... Posted by: OneEyedJack **** Well, it is easily defeated. Some have said you could sand it away very easily. The other alternative is to simply replace the firing pin. Problem solved. I use a retractable leash for my dog. He's not the most well trained animal but I'm not stupid. If I see other people around I keep him pulled in close and don't release. And I also wouldn't use it if he weren't the friendliest dog ever. He just wants to run up to everyone to say "Hi! Be my friend! Do you have a treat for me?" If he were to ever go off on someone then that person must be pure evil.

Posted by: OneEyedJack **** I should have said modern revolver, but that is correct. Actually, it's a revolver made by Dan Wesson. I forget the model, but you could adjust the cylinder gap enough to make the suppressor effective. Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale at February 21, 2016 01:45 AM (hVdx9) 549
I looked it up. Nagant M1895 is what I stumbled on. The mechanism pushed the cylinder forward upon cocking, and I assume there was some sort of mated surface there to make a good seal. The idea was to improve muzzle velocity (by not wasting pressure by gap leakage).
And there are some speciality designs. Some one made a "cage" for a SW revolver that effectively sealed the cylinder gap, enclosed the whole barrel looks like. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at February 21, 2016 01:45 AM (dvuhZ) 550

Hank: Banana peels, nutmeg, sunflower seeds, none of that stuff worked....
You forgot duct tape. Reminds me. Long time ago when the earth was barely formed, a friend said he knew a chemistry student at the university who could make some MDA. Dimethyltryptamine, maan! It's got "trip" right there in the name! I never cared for chemicals, but what the hey, I was young and extra stupid that week. One long road trip and a few dollars later, we got back, and following instructions added it to some weed in a joint and lit up. Puke! Nausea! Headache! Ruined weed! I tried to get my friend to take the barely-smoked j home with him, but he insisted on leaving it with me. For years, it was a running joke, he'd come by, and I'd offer him that ol' j. Noooo, thanks. Didn't matter how much we might want a hit of something, how empty the stash box, we would not touch that. I think he brought his brother by one time, and he tried it. Hilarity ensued. Eventually, in a phit of purity, it got thrown out. Might still be burning a hole in some landfill somewhere. Come to think of it, what the chem kid made for us was diethyl, not dimethyl. Stunk in any case. ...You know what worked? I'll tell ya what worked. A four-finger bag of Mexican ditch weed for $10. That worked. Ain't it the truth? Or, well, used to be. Others methods involve the breech face or extractor. Note that all of these are vulnerable to a dremel or parts replacement. Which is legal...for now. The Russians also have another silenced semi auto very loosely based on the Makaraov. However, the cartridges release very little gas to the atmosphere.
There is a plug in the cartridge that gets pushed forward by the primer gas and this drives the bullet down the barrel. The plug then seals the cartridge at it's end. This is all based off memory and I'm a little sick, and rather tired. Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale at February 21, 2016 02:16 AM (hVdx9) 594

Dogs have four "modes":
-Fight -Flight -Avoidance -Submission An overactive, happy dog can trigger an avoiding dog out of insecurity. The dog is not aggressive, but it is not comfortable and has not been socialized. Likewise, the overactive dog's owner should be watching for signs from other dogs. "Territorial" dogs are that way because the owner doesn't lead them on the walks. If they walk them at all. That is the best way to get to know the natural tendencies of your dog and it should be done early and often. Posted by: Slapweasel, (Cold1) (T) at February 21, 2016 02:25 AM (OQ9R7) 604

Jeb dropped out!
Jeb dropped out! Jeb dropped out! That fact alone makes today a Good Day, whatever else the results were. The only two stragglers now are Kasich and Carson, and I doubt they'll stay in the race much longer. I mean, what do you gain by slogging ever onward when there is zero chance of winning? So that means Ye Shytte Has Gottene Real. It's now a straight-up five-person race (I was gonna say "five-man race," but then remembered that Rubio is still but a boy), without any distractions. Rubio will get the Bush voters, and Cruz will get the Carson voters, putting both within striking distance of Trump. On the Commie side, Comrade Sanders and Commissar Clinton remain essentially tied in every result and poll. So not only are we in a five-person race, but a five-person head-to-head-to-head-to-head-to-head race, all abreast coming around the clubhouse turn. Has this ever happened before in American politics? I don't think so. Posted by: zombie at February 21, 2016 04:23 AM (jBuUi) Posted by: Infidel at February 21, 2016 04:24 AM (WCNOM) 731
The deHaviland "Mosquito" remains one of my all time favorite aircraft. A plane that would never have been built had it not been for the exigencies of World War II.
It went on to become the most versatile airframe of the allies , if not all of the planes built during the war with the possible exception of the Ju-88. Although considered obsolete by the start of the war the P-40 Warhawk/KittyHawk served in every theater of the war from beginning to the end. It just looks like a warplane from every angle to me. Rubio's showing in SC depressed the hell out of me. With Bush dropping out, his votes will go to Rubio. Kashich won't be around much longer. His votes will go to Rubio. Posted by: BignJames at February 21, 2016 05:48 AM (x9c8r) I don't remember who it was, but somebody said here about six months ago or more that Bush was just a stalking horse for Rubio, who is the GOPe's real choice. It made perfect sense to me. The idea is that conservatives would scream NOOOOOO at the thought of another Bush, but could be persuaded to "settle" for Rubio. ...that Idiot, Kasich. That asshole promised to balance the budget, (Ohio law, like most States), so he did so through Obama's Four-Year Medicaid Bribe and increased taxes through regulation.
