What? Morning, y'all. Chillier night than predicted. 30° now. Frost on the grass. Frost on the pickup windshield. Blazing red orb on the horizon. Lone white-tail west of the house. Dog lamely gave chase, then stopped. Supposed to be going up to 60° today. Will probably be warmer. Coffee's cooking. I'll take it. Put this in the last thread by mistake:
So I watched that white privilege video while waiting at the airport yesterday in the wee hours of the morning. And while watching the video I looked around me at the gate. So we're waiting for a 6:30 flight, which means everyone there got up at 5am or earlier to get their to the airport in time. It was almost all business travelers. And of those business travelers, 80% were men and of that 80%, 90% were evil white men. These are the people flying off to places to make shit happen....whether sales getting done or engineers building shit or IT peeps doing their thing or whatever. THIS is why evil white men succeed. Because at 5am we're out of bed crawling our way to make the 6:30am flight to Denver. And I'll be damned if I'll be ashamed of my so-called privilige you fucking leftist fucks. Swedish Feminists are Objectively Pro-Rape
Previously we have seen how "Intersectional Feminism" leads to the "Feminist" position that protecting rapists is more "Feminist" (in a intersectional way) and thus more important than protecting women from Rape. In that article, the image that was originally used was photoshopped to change "refugees" to "rapists" and has since been updated with the original photo. The argument still stood, but perhaps the photoshopped picture was more honest than previously thought. Also, because you don't equate debt with slavery? Singer 50 Cent on his bankruptcy: 50 Cent is lashing out at some of the creditors in his bankruptcy case, telling the judge they are trying to set the clock more than 150 years and gunning to make him their slave. Three of 50's biggest creditors - Sleek Audio, SunTrust Bank and Lastonia Leviston - have come up with a payback plan and are asking the judge's approval. 50 has just responded, claiming the plan violates the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which bans slavery and involuntary servitude. He says the plan would create "a near-indefinite period of involuntary indentured servitude" where he has to work solely for the creditors' benefit. Debt is now racist, apparently. Also, because you don't equate debt with slavery?
Interestingly, for much of human history, debt was considered the equivalent of slavery. There are several verses in the Bible (and in secular literature) that basically boil down to "the debtor is the slave of the lender." Of course, Mr. Half-Dollar is missing one vital point - his debt is voluntary, and paying it back is "justice" not "indentured servitude." First the gov't actually has permission to get at the data on the phone from the owner, the county agency the muzzie was working for. Second, Apple seems to be using this more for publicity than answering the request. It is apparent that Apple has the capability of cracking the encryption but is concerned the Feds will then use it in other situations. So, why not tell the Feds, they will crack it at the location with a Fed representative present and then turn the data over to the Feds. The Feds don't get the software, the Feds get the data, and it's all done legally. Posted by: WOPR at February 17, 2016 09:05 AM (LTDSy) 79

So Trump probably got thumped for going over the top on "Bush Lied", and some poll(s) dropped him a few or as much as nine, though it may make him stronger with the middle/left for the general. He walked it back some after that, but seems to hold a real anger about going to war in Iraq and helping the Saudis.
It would seem the Saudi princes are the ME's one percenters, and they pass money down, but many feel left out. And the oil rich countries aren't taking in the Syrian Muslims, or any Muslims. Trump would be better off directing the anger at the Muslim invasion of Europe, and softening the Bush Lied part. During the debates of 2004 Kerry blamed Bush and Bush said "you saw the same intel I did". Of course the emotion on the left in time became as strong about the misinformation on nukes, as the emotion in defense of the war was/is on the right. Trump overplayed it but changed the Overton Window to "the unsafe Iraq War" versus the "My Brother Kept us Safe, we need more Bush" Jeb view. Strange new respect from me for Tim Cook.
Mr. Cook has determined that Apple will fight the order by the court to provide assistance to the FBI trying to unlock the San Berdoo jihadis phone. Says it would have to create a program that would be a back door that could then be used on any iPhone. Says that the FBI could not keep the program secret (heh) and that once done could not be undone. As it is he revealed the manner of how to do it. Which entails faking the operating system and then getting the phone to download it as an upgrade. (see how dangerous those automatic upgrades can be? Microsoft?) EFF has chimed in and says they will be filing an amicus brief with Apple. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at February 17, 2016 09:22 AM (Xo1Rt) 144

Chi @ #140, Apparently you (and lots of others) are clueless about the "Birther" conspiracy concept. You see, the Birther conspiracy theory regarding Obama was that there was a conspiracy to cover up that Obama had been born in a foreign land because - as we all knew - this would have disqualified him from being president. That's why it was such a push to get Obama to release his birth certificate. No official proof was ever uncovered that Obama was born in a foreign land. accessible, collapsible, compatible, convertible, credible, defensible, destructible, digestible, divisible, forcible, gullible, incredible, permissible, possible and reversible None of which would necessarily make him a good president or a protector of our constitutional rights Posted by: Kindltot at February 17, 2016 09:32 AM (q2o38) 188
Trump's embrace of Bush Derangement Syndrome has knocked my support for his campaign down below Cruz. In my not so humble opinion, he really shat the bed there, and it'll take some major betrayal or insanity by Cruz to even make me think of reassessing it. I'd still take Trump over Rubio, but then again, I'd consider voting for the King in Yellow - the original He Who Must Not be Named - over any Establishment candidate.

I agree. When I was a wee lad, I worked in NYC for a landscaping company. They did a fair amount of work for Trump, and he stiffed them for the last several months of work. Not because of shoddy work (the stuff was amazing), but because Trump knew that he would prevail. More lawyers, more time..... And we weren't the only ones. NYC contractors are very careful about doing anything for Trump. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 17, 2016 09:32 AM (Zu3d9) 190

Methinks Tim Cook is just another lefty hypocrite.
He could just point out that the only thing the feds can legally get from the SB killer muzzie's phone is information relative to that case and that case alone. He could also point out that we all have an inalienable right to privacy while he's at it and for the feds to want any type of blanket surveillance is blatantly unconstitutional and therefore illegal. I could also have a pony. Of those three possibilities, the third one seems far more plausible than the first two. Posted by: BackwardsBoy at February 17, 2016 09:33 AM (LUgeY) 192

Early voting starts in Texas today. That means all the major candidates are on the ballot, and I would not be surprised if Cruz won (I won't be surprised if he doesn't, either, because Texans in general are pissed about the border, and Trump is the only one willing to say the things -whether or not he believes them- that we want said). I think if Trump wins in SC, then the Establishment will "encourage" everyone but Rubio to get out of the race and throw their support (and any won delegates) to him. I further believe (because the only group the Establishment ever seems to be willing to fight is the grass-roots), that they will then do two things: 1) throw out every bit of dirt they possibly can against both Trump and Cruz to make them "unelectable" and 2) play for a brokered convention. If they succeed in those two things, then the brokered convention will select Rubio or even Jeb (most likely). And at that point Mr. Trump will have succeeded in doing what I want him to do - destroy the Republican Party so that something new can take its place. Even if he wins outright, Trump will likely cause the Republican Establishment to destroy itself. I'm willing to put up with 4, or even 8, years of Trump in order to have at least a chance at a party that actually represents me. But you're plainly wrong about how the federal courts would respond to such a suit. The facts aren't in question. Everyone knows that the Ineligible Ted Cruz was born in a foreign land. Therefore - the relevant facts being known - it is strictly a matter of Constitutional law. And guess what? That's what the Supreme Court specializes in. The Ineligible Ted Cruz Being born in a foreign land (not at a US military base or embassy) means he was not born under sovereign US jurisdiction. An act of Congress naturalized him at birth. Calling Trump a Truther is fun but not remotely honest.
Truthers think Bush was behind 9/11, that he knew and it is all a plan by the secret globalist club, there were no planes, fire can't melt steel .... all that. Trump blamed Clinton first, then said Bush also had a shot at bin Laden. The "Bush Lied" part was only about the WMD's, and over the top that "they knew there were none". I think Trump believes the nation building was wrong and hurt US, and simplifies that with "they lied us into war". We know they didn't have as much as they sold us on regarding nukes. And the defensive right claims "there were WMDs" but really only point to the old chemical stuff. So it is "phrasing" ... they decided to go in, and Trump calls it a big lie, I (in hindsight, not with foresight) call it a strategic mistake, unless they'd been ready to unleash the military and really win. In any case, Trump hated the decision in 2004, and the deals made were more globalist interventionist than "America First". He was in favor of striking back at whoever did it, not in favor of what actually became more "quagmire" than Vietnam. Trump is not a "Truther" ... a little Bush derangement syndrome maybe, but for different reasons than leftists. Bush was a globalist, not really a conservative. With the passing of Scalia, I'm not willing to take a chance. Posted by: Vashta Nerada at February 17, 2016 09:54 AM (Qvgg/) Yep, that's the good and the bad of Trump. He lies just like the establishment lies, the only difference is he doesn't have 30 years of lying to account for, and there's no one else out there willing to bring the establishment to account. Except, yes, for Ted Cruz. Only he isn't a chaos candidate, he's a conservative candidate, and the socialist academy, media, entertainment complex, and social media advocacy engine have armored the youth of the nation against conservatism, stigmatized it into something to be completely ignored where it can't be attacked. Chaos may be our only hope. It's my opinion that the federal government has been set up, since the vietnam war, to tend towards autocracy automatically, regardless of who is in power. Thus chaos may be our only chance of averting redistributive socialism. In a battle of David vs Goliath you have to risk everything on a long shot. We are not Goliath. I'm not happy about it though. I haven't read the letter --- is this teaching them how to do it themselves, or just sets a precedent that authorities can request telecom companies do it for them (with or without a subpoena)? I've worked in the telecom industry (it was years ago, but still), and they do comply with subpoenas - not just call records, but location information, and I imagine it's only gotten more expansive with texts, browsing info from smartphones, etc. I'm not getting why this particular request is such a big deal. If Apple does it for the FBI what's to stop them from giving the same thing to the Chinese government. One of my daughter's friends from college attended a protest against human rights violations ONE time at Stanford, where they went to school. Afterwards, Stanford reported to her that her gmail account at school had been hacked, along with other email accounts from other protestors. The implication from Stanford's IT security people was the Chinese government was behind the hacking. The FBI can do the same and more (though I don't think they would) with this software. Only with a Court Order And Apple retains the work around NOT the Gov IT'S A FUCKIN TERRORIST There's no way to guarantee that, though. If the government can use the All Writs Act to compel creation of this tool, it can certainly compel Apple to hand it over. In fact, the argument writes itself: "It's simply too dangerous to let a powerful tool like this remain in a private company's possession. The government must maintain control of this tool to safeguard it." And you keep yelling about this being a "fucking terrorist" like that's supposed to mean something. Are there different evidentiary and investigative rules for terrorists vs non terrorists? How is one determined? Seriously, I tire of this asinine argument from Trumptards. My college roommate was born in London to two American parents who were working abroad. He's a fucking American in his soul, and legally too. If we're not going to make an issue of Obama's birth and upbringing (and bitching vs *mounting a campaign to disqualify a man from running for the office* are functionally distinct whether your head-up-your-ass pedantry cares to acknowledge the distinction or not) then why the fuck are we going to make an issue of it re: the most conservative candidate I've seen in my voting lifetime?

It's axiomatic. Cook tries to explain it in his letter. Posted by: VA GOP Sucks at February 17, 2016 10:10 AM (PFy0L) Here is what Cook says: Specifically, the FBI wants us to make a new version of the iPhone operating system, circumventing several important security features, and install it on an iPhone recovered during the investigation. In the wrong hands, this software which does not exist today would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone's physical possession. The FBI may use different words to describe this tool, but make no mistake: Building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a backdoor. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control. I don't see what Apple can't maintain possession of the phone while it is cracked and then remove the new software once done. Posted by: WOPR at February 17, 2016 10:23 AM (LTDSy) 423

There's no way to guarantee that, though. If the government can use the All Writs Act to compel creation of this tool, it can certainly compel Apple to hand it over. In fact, the argument writes itself:
"It's simply too dangerous to let a powerful tool like this remain in a private company's possession. The government must maintain control of this tool to safeguard it." And you keep yelling about this being a "fucking terrorist" like that's supposed to mean something. Are there different evidentiary and investigative rules for terrorists vs non terrorists? I came into a place where all light is silent, that
groans like the sea in a storm, when it is lashed by conflicting winds. The infernal whirlwind, which never rests, drives the spirits before its violence; turning and striking, it tortures them. When they come before the landslide, there the shrieks, the wailing, the lamenting; there they curse God's power. I understood that this torment were damned the carnal sinners, who subject their reason to their lust. And as their wings carry off the starlings in the cold season, in large full flocks, so does that breath carry the evil spirits here, there, down, up; no hope ever comforts them, not of lessened suffering, much less of rest. Policy: Trump's supported partial-birth abortion. His position on healthcare is left of Obamacare -- he wants to have Medicare set drug prices. His position on Iraq is "take their oil." His position on Syria is let Russia take over and also create a fabulous safe zone "on the beach" (because hey, beachfront property!) and have the Chinese build factories (because hey, Chinese people love to build factories! even in war zones!). His position on immigration seems is deport all illegals at massive expense, build a wall, get Mexico to pay for it --- and then let everyone back in! Yes, Trump supports amnesty for all. Except the Muslims, even if they're citizens, which, btw,is grossly unconstitutional not to mention bigoted.
Character: Trump University appears to have been little more than a scam, according to state prosecutors. Trump's a draft-dodger who said McCain wasn't a real war hero. He tried to use eminent domain to force an old woman out of her home to expand his casino. He told a baldfaced lie in the debates about being "loudly" against invading Iraq, but there is no record of his opposition before 2003 and his 2000 book strongly supports the invasion. He's called his opponents "anchor baby" and "p****y" and questioned their citizenship and said their faces are ugly and that they're fake war heroes and bad doctors. He's been divorced twice with at least three separate allegation of abuse. If Trump didn't have low-information supporters, he wouldn't have any. Trump alos says "that is not keeping US safe". The buck stops with the president, he can't pick and choose history (only the left can do that) ... becoming president starts well before the swearing in. I was OK with them exaggerating the nuke thing, but I now wonder what plan they had for the rebuilding. And your motives? I have no idea, but I think you seem to have a problem recognizing legitimate National Security Being ordered is different than being able to comply. A court could order me to levitate in the air like Magneto, but that's different than me actually being able to do it. And gee, I seem to recall lots of noise being made 15-some years ago about granting powers and abilities to the government in the name of national security. Didn't the NSA kind of run with that argument a while ago.....? If the FBI can legitimately hack into the phone, then lovely. We've won back second amendment rights, and some fourth amendment cases
as well. We've seen the GOP, as wimpy as it is, take the House and Senate- entirely because of the Tea Party - and an unprecedented number of state houses and governorships. ========= If I may? 2nd Amendment? Oh, you mean the ruling that DC promptly ignored? The defendant in that case? The ruling that multiple states and several Circuits said was limited in scope and really didn't apply all that much anyway? That "settled" law which is so settled it's already back before the Court? 4th Amendment? Gutted and dead for 20 years. Every since that bitch O'Conner said DWI checkpoints were totally Constitutional at least. Maybe even before that when the Shitty Court said, "cars are different, the 4th doesn't really apply when it comes to cars." House and Senate? Which has . . . done fuck-all to stop the Dems. To the point that there are ZERO legislative victories. To the point that--if you saw only the results, not the makeup of the membership--you'd swear the Democrats controlled both chambers. Statehouses and governorships? Yeah? And they are doing, what exactly, to expand the freedom and liberty of the citizens? What are they doing to pare back the size, scope and reach of government? To their credit, there is the only pushback against the Obama. But, they are limited because they are not committed to the last, full measure. Got news for you - foreign governments make unbelievable demands to access telecom company subscriber activities all the time (that are complied with). I worked for an international telco in the late 90's and we had governments that required we provide them an onsite office, with a door that locked, in which their people could sit and listen to calls whenever they wanted. In China they just up and decided that they would take over our local affiliate from its owners (nice telecom business ya got there, it's now ours, and USA HQ must now renegotiate all terms of doing business here to our liking). Heck, even in Canada they don't require subpoenas to demand records (unless something's changed recently). Posted by: Lizzy at February 17, 2016 10:47 AM (NOIQH) 534

look, Cruz's image in the MSM before his candidacy got really underway was "the filibustering conservative extremist" who pissed everybody off
that was the inertia he had to deal with, that and his supercilious smartypants manner, which didn't exactly warm the cockles of anyone's heart in the way Americans like to have their cockles warmed Trump came on the scene again and was Mr Let's Cut the Bullshit, but he had obvious warmth it's not hard to understand the emotional environment here: Cruz didn't lock up a lot of obvious support because he was considered toxic and didn't have a lot of likeability to make up for it Posted by: Feh at February 17, 2016 10:52 AM (wzYhq) 555

I shouldn't pile on, but will anyway. I read this morning that in the 90s on the Howard Stern show, he said that all his sleeping around during the HIV epidemic was akin to serving in Vietnam, because of the danger. I don't know if anything said on the Stern show should be taken seriously, but there are vast piles of awful things Trump did and said in the 90s that'll be hauled out by the MSM for the general election. That's a rather weak argument, I think. Bush did what he did. Let history make the case one way or another. As I have pointed out, Bush didn't spend any time attacking/blaming previous administrations, and I don't think he should engage in a public battle over his own. I wonder if any President has quietly endured the insults that Bush did, and still does. The media were complicit as were high-profile celebrities. I mean, we all loved it when Trump attacked Bill Clinton's history with women and Obama's various idiocies. If Trump put on a daily half-hour TV show to rant about Democrats, I'd watch it and cheer. Trump let his name be used on projects he didn't run, from what I gather. People had to read a little to figure that out maybe, but any "get rich quick" house marketing schemes, or real estate developments, should always be questioned. But people with money got greedy, were flipping, easy money ... hey, no more work, learn to flip houses and be rich. These seem to have fallen apart when the housing market did, and many people with money were indeed getting rich from the easy money real estate bubble. The bubble popped ... people are angry ... "where did my free riches go". Trump didn't create the real estate bubble. Posted by: Illiniwek at February 17, 2016 11:27 AM (5Gpe2) 598
