Obama Caught Spying on Netanyahu -- And The US Congressmen Who Communicated With Him

Obama promised to stop spying on our allies after there was a storm of (silly) anger in Europe over the US eavesdropping on Angela Merkel and others.

But note -- he said US allies.

And Israel is not an ally in the Long Years of Obama.

President Barack Obama announced two years ago he would curtail eavesdropping on friendly heads of state after the world learned the reach of long-secret U.S. surveillance programs.

But behind the scenes, the White House decided to keep certain allies under close watch, current and former U.S. officials said. Topping the list was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Obama targeted Israel for spying especially because of Israel's opposition to his Brilliant Plan to give Iran the bomb.

...

The National Security Agency’s targeting of Israeli leaders and officials also swept up the contents of some of their private conversations with U.S. lawmakers and American-Jewish groups. That raised fears--an “Oh-s-- moment,” one senior U.S. official said--that the executive branch would be accused of spying on Congress.

White House officials believed the intercepted information could be valuable to counter Mr. Netanyahu’s campaign. They also recognized that asking for it was politically risky. So, wary of a paper trail stemming from a request, the White House let the NSA decide what to share and what to withhold, officials said. “We didn’t say, "Do it,'" a senior U.S. official said. "We didn’t say, 'Don’t do it.'"

That is Peak Obama -- we'll break the law, sure, but we're going to make the bureaucracy, and not us, sit on the hook for doing so.

Nixon was of two minds on this subject. He knew that domestic (American) Jews were largely largely Liberal/Democrat, and his natural adversaries (not necessarily enemies). He also knew that Israel was in an important strategic position to oppose Soviet hegemony attempts in the Middle East.

Henry Kissinger, Jewish scholar, was his National Security council chairman and then Secretary of State. Did Nixon hate Jews categorically, or just knew that the majority of American Jews were liberal democrats, just as CBD and Nevergiveup have often said, and would fight against him?

105 rd @ #74: correct, and echoes something I've pointed out before, in connection with the "recess appointment" affair. In all prior US history, a stunt like the one Obama pulled would have lasted about 2 hours, during which the leaders of both parties would have gone before cameras and informed the WH that it would immediately reverse itself or suffer a thorough political and budgetary disembowling. Instead, ONE party goes to COURT to "fix" the problem. A condensed illustration of just how far the informal constitutional governors have failed.

Mateusz @ #79: your comment about anything being possible the next 13 months is completely different than the identical words had they been spoken any other time in my life. We really are in a world with endless (bad, destructive) possibilities.

106 Tricky Dick was, well, a dick. His privately voiced views of American Jewry veered at times into outright conspiratorial antisemitism. But when Israel needed help, Nixon provided it generously. A study in contrasts.

108 What I find hilarious -- and historically significant -- is that Netanyahu took office in March of 2009, so he has been the Prime Minister of Israel for basically the ENTIRE time Obama has been in office.

It's funny that Obama thereby has been utterly thwarted in all his goals involving Israel.

It's historically significant because if a leftist self-hating Prime Minister had been in power in Israel during Obama's reign, the Obama would have been able to get cooperation in achieving those goals -- which were:

1. The dismantlement of the state of Israel;
2. Handing the reigns of power over to the Palestinians instead;
3. And then siting back and expressing mock surprise when the next Holocaust plays out on your watch -- which was your true goal all along.

109 the whole reason the CIA couldn't act in America (well, legally) was because congress didn't want the executive branch spying on US soil with all those tools and lack of, shall we say, compunction.

Of course it's too much to hope that he'll actually pile on by starting to puncture the absurd mythology around Clinton's being a "good" president.

Leaving his histrionic personal degradation of the office and country entirely aside, Clinton was a comprehensive disaster. Yet even non-dipshit sorts mindlessly murble their admiration for his "moderation" etc. He happened to be standing there when a revolutionary economic/technical transition occurred, leading to short-term economic benefits and excesses. He had literally nothing to do with it.

His administration presided over the evolution of both the 9/11 and 2008 financial disasters. Material involvement, consistent incompetence or actual contribution to the problems, all of it clearly called out at the time (not a bit of hindsight or second-guessing involved).

Obama is, of course, a far far worse disaster as president, but then again he's presiding over a degraded nation with no meaningful opposition party, hollow or rogue institutions, collapsed informal standards and civic culture, and the cretinized and irresponsible electorate (esp. the "educated" urban/suburban part).

In the sense of not doing damage like the Obamunist has, I think Bill Clinton IS a good president. But that just shows you how far the bar has fallen.

Indeed, Clinton's personal scandals helped him. If Clinton had been a continent and unscandalized man, and so with the time and focus to be a left-wing activist president, the consequences would almost certainly have been disastrous for the American economy. As it was, with the president busy elsewhere, the nation thrived mightily, as it always does when politicians do not meddle. The stage had already been set by the Reagan years, but under Clinton all surged forward. During the last quarter of the twentieth century, more than $5 trillion in real terms was added to America's gross domestic product. This was the central paradox of the Clinton presidency, and of course the leading reason why he remained popular.

Ok -- then we live in a dictatorship.

If the co-equal branch of government, the legislature, cannot do their job without being spied on by the executive, then they have no power. The executive knows all of their dirty laundry (blackmail), knows their dealings, and knows their opinions and feelings on issues.

And the NSA, a part of the DoD is banned by legislation (posse comitatus act) from working on US soil.

And a call originating in the US is absolutely US soil.

177 Obama's chip shot proves that, just by accident, he can do something right. Which then proves all the other things that have gone wrong, weren't accidents.

At least the Borgias were the patrons of some great artists, as compared to Lena Dunham, Beyonce, and Shephard Fairey.

And I don't think the Borgias wanted to control everything the peasants ate and did and thought. Nor were they inviting foreign masses in to displace the natives.

They certainly had more style and better manners than Mooch.

Advantage: Borgias.

179 167 Nope. When the government has someone under surveillance, everyone who contacts that someone also gets surveilled. If I contact someone who the cops are watching (let's say with a warrant), I will get caught up in that surveillance.

I would expect the same if I contacted a foreign government. And any member of Congress who doesn't expect the same is too stupid to even listen to.

Yes, if the bug is placed on the American side of the call, that's a problem. But, if the bug is placed on the Israeli side of the call, then it is kosher. And, of course, if that is the case, the entire conversation gets recorded, not just the Bibi side of it.

184 Indeed, Clinton's personal scandals helped him. If Clinton had been a continent and unscandalized man, and so with the time and focus to be a left-wing activist president, the consequences would almost certainly have been disastrous for the American economy.

187 Re. the KGB I like the cleverness of picking up 'enemies of the revolution (or whatever)' in disguised trucks i.e. 'Joe's Meats' on the side and the appearance of a legitimate business. You don't want to unduly alarm the populace when you're.....ummmm.......sending off a big chunk of the populace to die. Also, doing the pick ups at 4 AM when the 'deemed guilty' would be groggy and pliable. The USSR communists were good at this thing. The US communists have surely taken notes.

188 "Clinton was a comprehensive disaster"

Bill's Bimbos are coming back. Remember the Gennifer Flowers eruption right before the 1991 NH primary. Hillary went on TV to stand by her man else his campaign was over.

Hillary exacted a price from Bill that she'd wield extraordinary influence and for the first two years pushed Bill's administration far further to the left than he wanted to be. In response, the 1994 mid-terms gave control of Congress to the Republicans for the first time in forever and Newt pushed Bill to act like a moderate Republican in most of the things that really mattered.

Under that logic, all internet communications are open game. Since everything passes through servers that could conceivably be (and probably are in many cases) outside the US.

And if your phone call gets routed through the Rogers network (not unheard of in northern NH), you can be spied on without a warrant.

And again, any time you talk to a friend or family member who lives 5 minutes over the border in Canada, the DOD can spy on both you and the recipient -- no warrant needed.

Thats a great way to circumvent the 4th amendment.

Yes, that is exactly how it works. If the FBI has a warrant to listen to the calls of a mafioso, and you call that mafioso, you get recorded. Nobody needs any kind of cause to suspect you, they have cause to suspect him.

When the CIA/NSA/whoever surveils people overseas, if you contact that person - even if it is from here to there - the surveillance on the other end will capture you as well. It is the only way it can work.

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at December 30, 2015 06:24 PM (R+30W)

Except that the Queen, God Save Her, is one of the few persons left in the UK who is actually capable of quoting from the Bible. The UK is far more secular and atheistic than the US is, even accounting for the "progress" we have made in that direction during the past 10 years or so.

Even at the supposedly conservative Telegraph, anybody who professes a belief in God or Christianity is thoroughly trashed in the comments sections. They've utterly disavowed their own Christian past.

206 This explains how the Hildebeast prepared for the Benghazi hearing..and why blackmailing stupid congressmen like K McCarthy? to conveniently burp out.."we (establishment R's) are using the Benghazi hearings to 'get Hillary for politics"..never the truth.

This is East German stasi/..zi tactics, people. Yet the elite media and establishment cannot field a candidate with more than 5-8% of voters? and wonder why Trump is at 40+?

How do you solve a problem like Obama?
I.M.P.E.A.C.H.M.E.N.T.

He cannot fight ISIS, create jobs for full employment, obey court/constitution if not agreed with, admit the gun problem is :criminals get guns illegally no matter because democratic welfare/food stamp safe space decimated urban/surburban cities full of hopeless people who have no incentive to improve their life..just vote democrat and we'll give you a ghetto, phone, food stamps and abortions?
But will support illegal immigration because they'll take the low-paying jobs his benefactors want for employees over Americans' jobless or veterans abandoned?

But he has enhanced Iran, Cuba and the Muslim Brotherhood and spied on congressmen who just might remember Israel is our ALLY, not Iran?

This is more than a smidgen of corruption carried out by people not bound by oath or the electorate. What has happened to our liberty? Our representation?
We need some hobbitses
