They Did It Again

Incredible.

It's almost as if they're actively campaigning for Trump.

They're that bad.

They funded a bevy of immigration programs, including a quadrupling of the H2B visa level, but...

Oh -- the GOP's big "get" was permitting US oil to be sold overseas. That's a good thing. I mean, it's a minor as f*** thing, but I suppose it's good.

But ti shows you where there priorities lay, that they'll trade everything else to service the oil lobby.

Riddle me this: how are increased prices as the gas pump (and everywhere else due to increased energy costs) supposed to help me? Because the iron law of supply and demand cannot be ignored. To be fair, I'm pretty sure that that is the real point here: increased gas and oil prices to make donors from the big domestic oil companies happy, which means more money to the effing GOP.

Posted by: physics geek at December 17, 2015 01:02 PM (MT22W)

142 Well, I don't see that allowing the export of oil is a bad thing. Oil is a fungible commodity. If the USA is producing more crude than can be refined and sold domestically, why not sell it? Reduce the balance of payments a little, and keep the workers in the production end employed. And I say that against interest, since if America was blocked from exporting oil, we in Canada could take up some of that slack, and I might get work in Q1, Q2 that I otherwise won't

No. Well, not entirely in my case.

I think Teh Donald is a good businessman, a very good salesman, and -- this is #1 -- an unabashed patriotic American. His ideas are right on (even if sometimes not expressed elegantly enough for Our Betters in the Conservative Chattering Class) and he doesn't have the usual political-hack baggage that makes me oppose all the other Republican wannabes.

I have a feeling he will do what he says he'll do, and that will make the country I love safer, more secure and perhaps more economically stable.

And I'm for him because he seems to really bug Poppin' Fresh and the other Witches of Salem.

And I'm for him because, as of now, there is no one better running.

You won't hear that here. In my view, we're re-living 1852, when the Whig Party sold out completely with the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act and essentially(and unwittingly)destroyed its own reason for being. Whig collaboration with the Democrats created the Republican Party andindirectly set the stage for the Civil War, which is grim to contemplate when talking about historical repetition.

It is amazing to me that none of the Republicans responsible for this latest betrayal are aware of the history of their own party, the how and why the GOP came about. Greedy, shortsighted fools, all of them.

Selling it overseas may reduce the supply, temporarily. IF demand increases, and supply declines, then areas and methods again become economically feasible. This is how it SHOULD work, over shitholes staying alive because only they are on the world market.

I'm genuinely surprised people believe that the government should stop private owners from selling their private property.

In most cases I think everyone agrees that's the case, but in the matter of fuel, that's another issue. Its a strategic reserve, something we need to be able to move and fight to defend the country. So it has to be watched over carefully to make sure we aren't depriving ourselves of self defense.

I don't think it's a matter of servicing the oil industry, Ace. They've been after this forever, and an awful lot of the right wing has been after this for nearly as long. It makes good business sense.

I think it's a matter of the GOP just doesn't give a fuck. Ryan was supposedly, allegedly this fiscally beautiful dude. We just found out that at 1.1 T$, he's no better than Preezy404 when it comes to our money. JJ is right- one party rule. And the GOP is trying mightily to consolidate that.

290 Some say Candidate Trump talks a good game, but President Trump won't be able to deliver because the Democrats actually control Congress.

But none of the following would require Congressional approval and could be acted on in first week of a Trump administration.

Budget: Promise to veto any omnibus spending bill.

Illegal immigrants / Build a wall and make Mexico pay for it.

Find existing legal authority for the IRS to impose withholding on all Western-Union like remittances to Mexico. Use as negotiating leverage.

Rescind all Obama executive orders like DAPA and DACA.

Withhold federal disbursements to sanctuary cities until they comply with existing laws.

Syrian refugees / Muslim entrants:

Use existing Presidential authority under existing statute to impose a temporary general ban on entrants from specified countries, with a set of exceptions.

Domestic security: Reverse any and all that limit law enforcement's ability to profile Muslims for investigatory purposes including for travel.

Over-regulation: Start by replacing the EPA head and rescinding all policies adopted during the Obama reign.

You get the idea.

A President Jeb wouldn't have the balls to do this. A President Trump will.

299 (1) ObamaCare: The omnibus blocks a potential risk corridor bailout. No new funding for ObamaCare is included.

(2) Abortion: Appropriators secured several pro-life provisions, including a ban on gene editing and a cut to the UN Population Fund. The House will be voting on a budget reconciliation package that repeals ObamaCare and defunds Planned Parenthood in January.

(3) Refugees: According to House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers, 2/3 of the refugee resettlement money is for overseas. Furthermore, the Senate will be voting on the House refugee bill most likely in January. The House will also be introducing several other bills. As for the visa waiver program, the House's reforms are included in the omnibus.

(4) Reid wanted a rider regarding the Trust Indenture Act in the omnibus; it did not make the final cut. Neither did Pelosi's wishes on guns nor a bankruptcy provision for Puerto Rico (http://bit.ly/1moUuGT). The Democrats also lost on the First Amendment provisions that block IRS and SEC restrictions on political speech (http://bit.ly/1RSfEZM). Furthermore, the Labor Department is prevented from raising the minimum wage for federal contractors while EPA funding was cut to 2008 levels. The Cadillac Tax is delayed for two years and the HIT as well as the Internet Freedom Tax for one. Another initiative that was delayed was the incandescent light bulb ban. These are just some of the provisions won by the Republicans in the omnibus.

You are aware that U.S. oil reserves have increased over the last few years? Because as prices rise, and technology improves, we get better at finding it, and bringing it to market. The way to keep those reserves increasing is to encourage sales of the stuff, wherever, and whenever. Because that encourages explorers and producers to find still better ways of finding and producing oil and gas.

It's not a zero-sum game. "Peak Oil" is a myth.

309 As I have already stated, thus far, the tax extenders bill is the better of the two. I am not yet finished with the omnibus but I would currently describe it as a mixed bag. That said, as I have already mentioned, I do think they could have gotten a better deal had some members not opposed the omnibus prior to the bill being written. For every vote you lose, you have to make it up with votes elsewhere,so those refusals as well as the "vote no, hope yes" caucus made the bill more liberal than it would have been otherwise. My recollection is that the Republicans opening bid was basically their wish list. Regardless, some of the items not specifically prohibited are going to be addressed next month and the authorizing committees have the power to address other concerns. The rank-and-file need to stop relying so heavily on the appropriators and actually do their jobs.

339 "The Cadillac Tax is delayed for two years and the HIT as well as the
Internet Freedom Tax for one. Another initiative that was delayed was
the incandescent light bulb ban. These are just some of the provisions
won by the Republicans in the omnibus."

A delay in the Cadillac taxes (on healthcare) is in no conceivable sense a "win" for Republicans. Delay or repeal of the Cadillac taxes was an absolutely central goal of Big Labor, who are, let us remember, a key DEMOCRATIC CONSTITUENCY.

As for a "win" on the already enacted idiotic light bulb ban (originated with a Republican, Fred Upton), it really doesn't matter now what the heck the GOP does retroactively, because for all practical purposes, incandescents are pretty much gone from the retail channel, and domestic production of them has been shut down.

These things are "wins"? Jesus wept.

Correct, US oil companies have tons of oil to sell, extra oil that's been piling up. Good for them, but hardly a high priority for us right now. Getting that by giving up security in controlling immigration... bad play. A very bad play.

Its a huge win, from his perspective, and he believes that he's stayed true to the principles of fiscal conservatism by helping business out and stimulating the economy. Wanted to interrupt the autopsy real quick if that's ok.

There are "community organizers" in every city and town in this country working hand in hand with their government to pass taxpayer money on to "low-income areas" under the guise of "communty involvement" and "increased participation in the democratic process" and "celebrating diversity." They're organized, they're well-funded, and they're energetic.

Are you running for local office? Do you participate in community outreach? Are you making a case to people outside of the conservative bubble, people who know what breitbart is and not to click those links because it would upset their mental apple cart? Are you taking a personal stake in the battle that will culminate next November?

Failing that, are you going to vote for the outsider trying to mount the last possible counter-attack, via the electoral process, against the DC political machine?

Oh you're not?

Well then kindly go drown yourself. You are a failure, a hypocrite, and much, much more out of touch and pathetic than the millenials you think are ruining this country. We are inheriting it from you.

That bill was expanded by the Senate on December 3rd (http://1.usa.gov/1YMrQx2). Due to those changes, the House will have to take another vote if they want to get the bill to the SCOAMF's desk. The SCOAMF will then veto it. All that is not opinion but fact. I provided the roll call votes at the links. Chad Pergram's report regarding the legislation is at #414.

Neither one of those observations is a positive for Republicans. The tax extender bill is better - though, as always, there are still some things I dislike - because the Republicans were able to maximize their leverage.

If he wins, he will be as corrupt as any, probably more so since he knows the graft/payoff routine so well, but at least he won't enter Office with a commitment to the Hard Left, that's his only saving grace, and only compared to Hillary or Sanders.

471 Listen, you stupid Trumpkins, the so called GOP elite is the only way to keep Hillary out of the White House. Trump has no shot...NO SHOT...and you dopes better vote for Marco.

472 But with the gay marriage ruling the social cons now know they will never get anything by voting Republican. That they've been lied to for years. And with Iran sell out and other things the pro-military people know that they have been taken for a ride too.

474 "When has Trump ever entered into any endeavor without the intent of cashing in? Never."

He's earned his money legally.

"If he wins, he will be as corrupt as any, probably more so since he knows the graft/payoff routine"

He's played the game legally to benefit his companies because he HAD to to do business in the corrupt "pay for play" city of New York. He's the victim. He's been forced to pay and so he made them his puppets. He made Hillary dance for him, by making her attend his wedding. Good for him.

475 Funny how all the 'rising stars' in the GOP turned out to be bought and paid-for whores.

I am just disgusted by all of it. Trump could eat a puppy and I'd crawl over glass to vote for him.

476 Speaking as an unemployed member of the 'oil bidness' I don't see how lifting the export ban helps the 'oil bidness' when we're still importing somewhere between 30% and 40% of the oil used in this country. I _suspect_ the whole situation is about exporting the refining business elsewhere long-term. It's nothing to do with the Oil Lobby and everything to do with Deindustrializing The Rednecks.

477 "There is no conspiracy here. Nor is one necessary. Trump loves Hillary and wants to see her be president."

That's a laugh. He threatened to put her in prison after investigating her crimes once he's in office.

"But be honest."

So if people don't agree with your premise then they are not honest? Please.

You just can't face the fact that Trump is killing it and will not only be the nominee but the next president.

481 If Trump (or Cruz) crushes Ryan in the next 24hrs he will be the nominee. Ryan attacked Trump over the Muslim ban thing...said it was not "conservative". Now is Trump's chance to drop the big one on Ryan.

Heck...after this display by Ryan, Trump could honestly get up and say "I am more conservative than the GOP"...and he might be right.

482 "Trump is the ONLY candidate that is actually pro American citizen, worker, and taxpayer."

"There's no rational basis for believing this"

Uh...yes there is. A very rational basis. He's been articulating and writing about his positions since at least the 90's.

Then we currently have six months of his speeches and actions.

484 They Did It Again
Incredible.

"Again" is quite the understatement. This is the 43rd time they've done it since 2011. They've never done anything but this. The appropriate title is:

They Did What They Do And What Any Reasonable Person Knew They Were Going To Do Since They've Never Done Anything Else"

Thread winner!

Go Trump

485 "That's certainly in the plus column, but the real reason for me to hold my nose and vote for Trump would be the enormous collective shit hemorrhage which it would induce in the halls of NPR/PBS."

"They are absolutely besides themselves about the rise of Trump. I was trapped in commute traffic in the car a few days last week and where I would normally tune in to Mark Levin, I instead listened to NPR, and holy cats, are they ever worked up."

What greater endorsement could you get? The GOPe and the NPR/DNC are losing their shit over Trump.

There is a reason for this. He's going to destroy them and place the American citizen back to their rightful commanding position.

Posted by: Misfortune & Pestilence at December 17, 2015 04:30 PM (o7C/a)

486 "That's not hard core businessman. Hard core businessman prevents bad shit from happening, and baring that makes sure it doesn't happen again. Because it reflects on him and his brand. There's good egomaniacs and bad ones. We've had seven years of the worst type."

Right. It's so obvious but some just want to be miserable. Trump is putting his name on the line. He wants to succeed in straightening things out. He wants a gleaming America because it will reflect on him. He's a doer and a winner by choice and hard work.

487 It occurs to me that imposing an embargo is a traditional Presidential power.

So if it occurs to Mr. Lame Duck Last Year to simply order away the ONE concession Republicans obtained, ain't nothing to be done about it.
