Quote of the Day I

We often read nowadays of the valor or audacity with which some rebel attacks a hoary tyranny or an antiquated superstition.  There is not really any courage at all in attacking hoary or antiquated things, any more than in offering to fight one's grandmother.  The really courageous man is he who defies tyrannies young as the morning and superstitions fresh as the first flowers.

-- G.K. Chesterton, What's Wrong with the World, 1910

Quote of the Day II

As to the court case - Mann vs Steyn - Robert Tracinski notes en passant here that we're now in the fourth year at the District of Columbia Superior Court. I voluntarily submitted to their jurisdiction (I don't live or work in the District of Columbia, and nor does Mann) because I naively assumed they had the minimal competence to adjudicate a 270-word blog post in under half a decade. They don't. It's somewhat frustrating to be trapped in a choked toilet of a "justice" system where everything is actionable but there's never any action.

-- Mark Steyn

Quote of the Day III

The society which scorns excellence in plumbing as a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy: neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.

-- John Gardner

Glenn Reynolds: It's Time to Repeal the 26th Amendment And Raise The Voting Age to 25

So Why Were Black Students - But Not Jewish Students - Up In Arms Over the Poopstika?

Why No One Believes the 'Racial' Incidents on College Campuses Are Real

In order to combat the supposed scourge of "structural racism," it seems that much of it has to be invented. A grossly racist flyer circulated on the campus of Ohio's Oberlin College in 2013 sparked massive campus-wide protests and resulted in cancelled classes. The pamphlet repeatedly used anti-gay, anti-Jewish, and anti-black slurs, and demanded that all these undesirables be locked in "cages," but it turned out to be the work of two liberal activists. One of the hoaxers was a member of the group "White Allies Against Structural Racism." Worse still, the campus administrators knew that this incident was a hoax even as the classes for which their students were paying exorbitant fees to attend were being cancelled.

In 2012, a University of Wisconsin, Parkside student found herself on a racist "hit list" that included the names of a number of African-American students targeted for violence. That list appeared several days after two nooses made out of rubber bands appeared on campus. The incidents exploded in the news and became the focus of an investigation by the Kenosha County District Attorney's office, but that investigation revealed that this student who originally exposed the plot was behind the whole affair. What gave her away was the fact that the only name on the "hit list" spelled correctly was her own.

The student activists on Vassar College's Orwellian-named "Bias Incident Response Team" found themselves busy indeed in November of 2013. They were supposedly combating an epidemic of hateful and insensitive messages directed toward blacks, women, and the transgendered scrawled and spray-painted on student residencies. Guess what? The perpetrators of this act of bias were none other than the members of the anti-bigotry brigade themselves.

The Single Best Thing You Can Do For Your Child...

Just might be having them wait an extra year before starting school.

A new study on the mental health effects of kindergarten enrollment ages found strong evidence that a one-year delay dramatically improves a child's self-regulation abilities even into later childhood.

According to the study co-authored by Stanford Graduate School of Education Professor Thomas Dee, children who started kindergarten a year later showed significantly lower levels of inattention and hyperactivity, which are jointly considered a key indicator of self regulation. The beneficial result was found to persist even at age 11.

"We found that delaying kindergarten for one year reduced inattention and hyperactivity by 73 percent for an average child at age 11," Dee said, "and it virtually eliminated the probability that an average child at that age would have an 'abnormal,' or higher-than-normal rating for the inattentive-hyperactive behavioral measure."

The study, aptly titled, "The Gift of Time? School Starting Age and Mental Health," was published Oct. 5, by the National Bureau of Economic Research. A version of the article is also available here as a working paper from the Stanford Center for Education Policy Analysis at the GSE.

The Average Gun Owner Now Owns 8 Firearms

Here's a number to be proud of. The Washington Post is reporting that according to Wonkblog, the average number of firearms in a "typical gun-owning household" has increased to 8.1 firearms. This is a  nearly two-fold increase from data in 1994 which reported the typical household had 4.2 guns.

Which means they now have an 'arsenal' in their 'compound'.

24 Things were comparatively calmer at Mizzou today, but we did have an incident in the laughably-described "free-speech zone" that is Speakers' Circle. A group called the Revolutionary Communist Party (no really) got in an argument with a preacher holding a placard saying we should obey authority and submit to law and order, and just as I was passing by the Circle, one of the commies decked the preacher. It would have gotten a lot worse, but his comrades dragged him away.

Of course he should be arrested for assault, but he won't be. If anyone gets thrown in the slammer, it'll be the preacher for his "hurtful speech."

95 I've long thought I would've done much better in school and life if my mother had delayed my entry into school.

In most districts, there's a cutoff for admission into first grade by date of birth and no necessarily age.

Since my B'day falls in Dec. I was able to enter school a year earlier than otherwise.

A fateful error. The class after me was decidedly my inferior intellectually and I would've been bigger in size. That extra year would've seen me with much better grades and much better socially integrated.

The first of two major actions my parents took that made my life harder than if they'd not made them. The other was moving to the country side when I was ten. This broke all the newly formed and fragile alliances and friendships with all the other kids who lived in town. It was only a year before I was back in class with them but the damage and isolation had been done.

So to all youse parents out there, parenting is filled with pitfalls but delaying your kid when they're young is a good idea and separating them from their friends is not. Word to the wise.

And as for the Number of guns, I see I'm behind. I've already got my eyes on my next firearm. Just as soon as I whittle down my credit card balance. I'm getting it.

157 I get what the article is saying about delaying school entry. But here's the problem. We now have 13 years of required school in this country in order to get a high school diploma. Twelve was bad enough. So the educrats took what used to be a fun play year of K to get kids used to being away from Mommy, and turned it into a high-stakes test environment completely inappropriate for 5-year-olds. So somehow now it takes 13 years to do what used to take 12.

If you compensate for this by delaying school entry, you're also delaying school escape and therefore delaying adulthood. As if these kids aren't infantilized enough, they're going to be stuck raising their hands for permission to go potty when they're 19.

Not sure of the solution though.

Broke my fibula just above the ankle, some ligament damage. ER docs said the way it broke would require some hardware, but didn't get any farther than that in terms of detail.

Orthopedic surgeon is supposed to call me tomorrow in advance of surgery on Saturday. They stuck me in a boot, gave me a bottle of hydrocodone pills, and wheeled me to the door.

191 Thinking about the prior thread re: millenials.

I'ts no wonder they are the way they are. And certainly there are exceptions to the stereotype. But the stereotype is there for a reason.

Millenials have been raised since birth in households that typically have one parent, with the divorce rate so high. They have never had an example of a loving two parent household, in which the mother and father have to make concessions to one another or to the household in order to save money, etc. The stability of that household has never been there for them. They were raised by a grandparent, or sent to daycare, then preschool, then kindergarten, then school. Where they were given whatever attention by strangers, and then educated by strangers.
They often, especially if male, have been drugged since they were children to make them docile. Boys are not permitted to exhibit normal male exuberance in class or socially, with sports being the only outlet. Those sports, especially football, have been under assault for a decade regarding injuries, concussions, and the all around DANGER they pose to the player.
They have been told since childhood not to be in the sun, not to swim in a pond, not to eat fast food, not to get dirty, they can't go to the playground unless fully supervised, everything at the playground must be super safe, i.e. not much fun, they cannot go outside and simply play in the neighborhood due to stranger danger, they can't be out of an adult's sight less the adult have child services called on them. All of the above things are constantly pointed out and told to be dangerous to the child.
They have been told and trained that all lifestyles are worthy. They have been trained that everyone is equal, except those who had some injustice placed upon them and are therefore special. (People of color, women, gay, lesbian, and all the new types). So they need to be given special privileges, even though they are supposed to be equal. Since they are special, common sense tells the millenial that they are therefore inferior. That somehow, the injustices are their fault(Just like they believe that somehow, it's their fault mom and dad split up).

Girls have been told they can do anything a man can do, even if that activity requires the strength of men. They are told as small children to embrace sexual feelings and that all sorts of sexual pairing is good, acceptable, and normal. They are told to have sex early and often, then at the same time told that all sexual activity involving men is rape. They are dressed up as sluts from an early age and then told to be enraged if they attract attention. If they don't attract attention from males, it's because they are discriminated against.

I could go on and on, but I think most here get the idea. If ever there was an example of how to raise a really screwed up individual into their twenties, I believe the last two generations have mastered it. And we are now living with the results.

Well of course disenfranchising most people under 25 would be good for them and the country and the world, and there is precisely zero chance of that happening. Which I assume makes Insty's statement just for show, as surely he also knows this.

And as someone pointed out in ace's last thread, it's not "milennials" who are idiotically and pathetically caving in to demands from stupid, unskilled, unliked freak activists, nor is it those milennials who created the dumbed-down ridiculous alternate reality of most universities and much of society today. The milennials just "staff" the joint, it was designed by much older people.

I recall my astonishment when told by my sister back in the 90s about the mass-drugging of students in elementary school (ritalin?). I could, literally, almost not believe it, it sounded too much like Orwell or Huxley come to life. Of course it was true.

And while completely open to being corrected, it seems to me there is a theme to this pudding. The country that saved and then dominated the world in the mid-20th century, went to the moon, and invented most of the best positive things in the contemporary era, somehow needed to drug a huge% of its young students, and then needed to reinvent how to teach basic subjects (common core)? 206 @ cthulhu.

Brother, my shoulder isn't much better than Caustic Conservative's ankle. Which is to say, I can work, and haul a ladder with my left hand. I've got about 80% movement on my right, and only 50% strength.

And the pain threshold arrives much sooner, and at an unbelievably ferocious intensity. It's not fun.

I'd start a gofundme for surgery, but people would just point and laugh, as I'm neither cute, sexy or marketable in today's media insta-world.

So, I'm working on finding some other avenues to pursue treatment, and it must be found. The shoulder is in bad shape, and I need to get it cut on, before it fully sets as a bum wing.

@ Caustic Conservative.

You won't be able to even *stand* being in the front seat ON EITHER SIDE of the car, for two to three weeks. You'll want to ride in the back, sideways, with your leg up on pillows.

Keep it above your heart as much as possible. When it gets below your heart, your own pulse within the arteries and veins in your leg will cause you to writhe in agony.

That'll go away after a couple or five weeks. Maybe six. Notice I haven't even mentioned rehab yet?

I fired my *rehab* team, wrenched a set of obsolete Campi strap-type pedals onto a Fuji 15 speed, and began my own rehab, starting at 1/2 mile a day. Eight months later, I had it up to 14 miles per day, in 45 to 50 minutes.

That healed up the nerves so I could at least walk, but like I said, overcoming the limp took a full two years.

You need to have 'em set you up with the strongest pain med they'll trust you with, for the first five days to a week after surgery. Then, go down to plain ol' vicodin for pain, until you can downgrade to aspirin or whatever works for you on a non-prescription basis.

But do trust me on keeping the ankle elevated above your heart, whenever possible. Let the family know that you need the sofa for a few months, or OWN the recliner, and pillows on the footrest as necessary.

And be ready for that sideways in the car, ride home from the hospital. With pillows back there to elevate your leg.

I'm not going to sugar coat it. You're in for a hell of a rough few weeks there. My prayers are with you, and I'm sure you've got a Pack of Corgis sending their prayers, too.

By the way. How the damn hell DID you break the thing? Hope it was at least, creative, spectacular and entertaining?

I honestly don't know what came first, the psuedo psychologists that fill the education schools at most colleges that produce teachers and administrators, or the demanding parents who threaten to sue the school for disciplining kids, therefore turning it into one big psycho day care center. If you can't provide enough gym and recess that young kids need, plus a structured environment due to all the restrictions, then the teachers demand (and found an easy out with insisting the boys, especially, be taken to the doctor to get a Rx because in the school's learned opinion, they are hyperactive, ADD, ADHD, etc.)

"Professor Swain has testified a number of times before the U.S.Commission on Civil Rights, of which I’m a member. It’s plain from her testimony that she suffers from two serious afflictions: speaking plainly and not suffering fools (or foolishness) gladly. I may sometimes disagree with her but she’s learned and always rigorously thoughtful. Clearly, she has no place on today’s college campus. She’s an unsafe space personified."

I know he didn't start sounding weird until much later in life when he got involved in a lot of stuff trying to find some place for himself because the place he was bred to fill was being hogged by his skank mother.

I'd get a little upset about that myself. But he can't come out and say stuff like that so he has to resort to other things to get his licks in.

Oh, Yeah, he wasn't made out to be so dingy until the succession was assured. Strange that, Huh?

Case in point -- As my daughter was exploring her grown-up options, when she was around 13 she suggested to me that she would like to become a mechanic.

I said that's great, it's a valuable skill that will always be in demand. But here's the thing -- A mechanic needs a lot of upper body strength. Your brother, 5 years older, could not break loose headbolts torqued to a lowly 95 foot pounds. Some bolts on a car can go as high as 240 foot pounds. Some jobs just require muscle. And while I have wrestled you and you are definitely strong, you would have to turn it up quite a few notches to be an effective mechanic.

228 Thank you much for the cheerful prognosis, Jim!

ER nurse said I was the toughest sumbitch he had seen with that injury in 23 years. But I knew I had a high threshold for that. Worried mostly about how long it will take me to be able to function again, even a little bit, outside. I farm, and had my vet here to vaccinate some cattle. THe concrete lot was clean last week but a little greasy after heavy rain last night. We were pushing a two wheeled cart out of the way by hand since the vet's pickup was only 2 wheel drive and the yard was slippery. I wish I had a sexy lie, but I slipped on cattle shit and fell. Heard it break, the guys I was working with called an ambulance right away. As I laid on the cold concrete, the vet asked me if I was OK. I said yeah, I know what you normally recommend for a broken leg! When the paramedics got my boot off I realized it was closer to my ankle. Got as big as a softball. They really didn't do anything for me in the ER except put me in the boot and send me home until surgery. What should I be asking the orthopedist when I talk to him tomorrow AM?

Jen, though these days my capacity for astonishment and despair is long since exhausted - of course - when I pause to think about this Huxleyesque insanity about drugging school kids, it still drops the jaw.

And though - unlike your average NPR-marinated clueless "liberal" or "moderate" - I again stand ready to be edumucated about something I don't know that makes sense of all this, the collateral issues raise confidence that my initial reaction is sound. Those issues being the cocooning of children in and out of school, the risk-free obsession, the end of childhood as all previous generations knew it, for most. And the wheel-spinning about somehow discovering a new way to teach things that have been taught around the world and in the US for generations.

But to keep to our shared theme, the key thing here is the parents. Accepting this insanity, even for a moment. Of course they were/are often part of it, drugging their kids for their own convenience.

No, the then-Princess Elizabeth did in fact serve in the motor pool. As did her younger sister, Margaret, IIRC. She took her duties seriously, and developed quite a taste for hands-on wrenching, and for years afterwards, she liked to work on the Royal Landrovers at her country estate.

She would not have the adoration she does from the British people if she were a phony like Obama.

She wrote that while at the time, she didn't realize it, now she realizes they had rapid bugout plans for the royal family. And she wasn't included. If the Germans had started to bomb Windsor Castle, they would've whisked away the royals, but left her there to fend for herself.

What automotive mechanics need, far more than upper-body strength, is brains. And some good grounding in electrical and mechanical theory. Doesn't matter how strong one is to torque bolts, if one doesn't know why torquing bolts matters. And any productive mechanic in a shop these days will be using air-operated tools to do the muscle work.

247 Caustic.

The MOST IMPORTANT THING to ask your surgeon, will be to ask 'em to insert a urinary catheter while you're out.

Waking up, you'll be "bursting" to piss, but the muscles won't get the signal to let go, and that bursting becomes a real thing. I didn't know to ask, and so had to endure the insertion in the cold light of day, after being wheeled back to my room. The pain was awful, but the relief was bliss itself.

Second, if you don't care for being laid out, powerless, defenseless and FREEZING HALF TO DEATH in a meat-locker impression of a recovery room, then politely threaten the nurses with mayhem if they fail to cover you with at least two, and maybe even three blankets while in the recovery room. They keep them damn things COLD.

Finally, as your Doc for a sample of the hardware he's installing. You'll want to look at a sample of what's causing you so much pain, so you'll have a target to cuss at.

Oh, and maybe print out my missives here and let your medical staff read 'em? A laugh, if nothing else.

Your break though, sounds just damn awful. I'm glad you had people around to help though. A break like that would leave you crawling for help.

I'm sure you'd have got there, but it wouldn't have been any fun in so doing.

Brother, just hang in there, and take these notes in with you. Hard learned on my end, so I hope it'll help some on yours.

And you are going to need some sort of brace to keep the entire engine from rolling over when you stand on that snipe. BTDT with VW engines, which use a similar flywheel nut.

Goes back to brains. A smart mechanic will figure out a way to achieve that torque, without putting himself, the job, or his tools at risk.

258 You ought to see some of the "cheater bars" we rigged back in younger days on the farm with my father. One I remember was the big nut 2"+ holding the disk gangs on a cutting harrow. We didn't have a socket that big, so used this giant pipe wrench. It was made out of some light alloy, and it's still out there somewhere. You couldn't have lifted one that big made out of regular tool steel material.

Anyway, for a cheater bar, we used a long pipe on the end of that big wrench, and that was heavy enough. You had to arrange things just so you had that pipe at the right height to jump up and down on it to break that big nut loose.

Lug nuts on some big rear tractor wheels could get stuck as well, and even the 3/4" impact wrench we had wouldn't budge it, and I'd have to do the jumping up and down on the cheater bar with those as well.

Nearly killed myself a time or two. But that was my job, as a young 'un. Now that I'm old (and arthritic to boot), that's what the current crop of young 'uns is for. But they're too spoiled and stupid.

No. It's no big deal. Flywheel is doweled to the crank, and one large central nut holds it on. VW air-cooled engines were that way from the get-go. It's called a "gland nut" and it contains a needle roller bearing to support the tip of the transmission input shaft. Actually, it's not a but, but a short stubby bolt that screws into a threaded recess in the end of the crank.

With a shop set up to do them, with the right fixtures, and such, they are trivially easy to work on.

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian, Model Citizen at November 13, 2015 12:11 AM (P4OkF)

Except that ritual and ceremony are not nothing and in fact are more important than we like to believe. In a sense the Queen (or King) is the living symbol of the nation's continuity going back centuries. And as a business proposition the royal family is highly profitable for England. The individual royals don't cost that much to support but they bring in a huge amount of tourism from their existence and ceremonial functions. If the royal family didn't exist, the UK would have had to invent them for marketing purposes...

Plus as Mark Steyn has pointed out before the Queen's role in a constitutional monarchy actually has some unique benefits not available in other democratic systems of government.

In theory she has the greatest political power of all yet she is least able to exercise *any* political power on a day-to-day basis. And as the only non-politics-based authority in the government she stands apart and acts as a fail-safe should there be a crisis or a parliamentary meltdown - and also as an implied threat should the government in power run off the rails. But the irony is that any political power she could possibly wield ultimately comes from the moral authority gained by being seen to be studiously non-political and acting solely in the country's best interests.

So while she may have the power to correct for a crisis or a dangerously bad government, she lacks the power to create a governing crisis in the first place or run the country into the ditch.

271 259 That's retarded. I can understand torquing on an Abrams breech block, but a flywheel?!?!? That's just looking for a redesign with a second bolt.

Posted by: cthulhu at November 13, 2015 12:47 AM (EzgxV)

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 13, 2015 12:53 AM (0yhH4)

If it's doweled to the crank, why the ultra-high torque? It would seem to me that design elegance would have machined pins and dowels handle the tolerances, where studs, bolts, and nuts with standard torque (and maybe lock washers) would hold the machining together.

I'm not trying to be stupid here, but I may have to confess to having a natural aptitude for it.

Think operating environment. High-vibration, large masses, high-torque, frequent speed changes, heat and cooling cycles.

It's murder on materials.

Once it starts vibrating, wear accelerates.

276 Shit. I need to buy 7 more.

Funny thing. My middle child was born in November. If we were in Calif. he would have entered kindergarten (good old German word, if you try spelling it ...garden, the spellchecker warns you) a year earlier. As it is, he never had any trouble with school, until he dropped out of High School a week before he turned 18. I had to force him to go take the SAT. He scores a 1540. The fuckers (that is a technical term) take that as an indication of how wonderful the H.S. is.

I get a call from the H.S. My son has been truant. Want to know what I said?

"You drove him away! He is turning 18 within the week. You will do nothing about this." He had a Math teacher that penalized him for having the correct answer but not showing his work. He was doing it in his head. I called the teacher to discuss this. The Motherfucker NEVER returned my call. I was working 60 hour weeks at the time. What am I supposed to do? Call the Principal to conduct a joint meeting?

He now has a Master's Degree in Computer Science from one of the top Universities in the world. Between salary and bonuses and stock grants, he is earning over half a million for the next few years.

So. by all means, hold your children back. Hell, If I had to do it over again, all of them would be home-schooled.

277 Yes, but, stereotypically, 1st and 2nd gen RX-7 owners believe it is illegal to spend money, and you will generally find one laying over the engine while the other pounds on a borrowed 54mm socket.

Also, for reasons unknown, they couldn't spell three words in a row correctly if you put a gun to their head.

Oddly, 3rd gen owners spend money like it was water. And they can spell.

But cheap-ass owners, doing their own repairs, are, by definition, not mechanics. A person actually in the trade, and working in a shop, would have the right tools for the job. I'm sure most general service shops would not even attempt a tear-down on a Mazda rotary engine, but would refer customers to a dealer or a specialty independent shop, either of which would have the right tools.

Again, in terms of elegance (and as the son of a make-a-nickel engineer), there is a design issue in using an overtorqued nut on something threaded to combat slippage or vibration in any dimension other than along the threaded whatzit. In other words, you shouldn't use extra torque on a nut to try to halt vibration or slippage in the plane where a washer might be, if the nut had a washer.

I can tell you exactly why, and Merovign did as well. I had a VW Beetle once, and it developed a curious buzzing noise from the engine, every time I went from throttle-on to throttle off. The VW shop said, "flywheel bolt is loose; fix it now, or your engine is toast." So I took the engine out, and sure enough, the bolt was loose. And the dowel pin holes were ovaled out. So.... got the right size drill bit, and carefully drilled 4 new holes between the existing 4, through the flywheel, and into the crankshaft. Put the original dowels, which were hardened steel, into the new holes. Drilled the old holes out a touch oversize, and tapped in four new dowels cut from drill rod.

And torqued that bastard bolt tight! No further problems. Remember that a piston engine reciprocates, and the torque is delivered in pulses. The flywheel is needed to smooth out those pulses, which means you have reversing stresses on those dowel pins.

Wouldn't the right solution have been to have hardened steel plates at the end of the crank and on the flywheel, have 8 pins in the first place, and use normal torque? I mean, to torque a nut hard enough to avoid slippage when your materials suck so bad that you're going to oval holes out is putting the the akSENT on the wrong SYLlable.

In a word, no. There is nothing wrong with the materials used. If the nut is properly torqued, it will never come loose. And the torque figure is right in the standard ballpark for a fastener of that diameter and thread count.

325 Hey everybody.

Well, I'm sure everyone's just on pins and needles wondering where I was last night so I'll share. First I made the mistake of dropping by Barnes & Noble to pick up a blu-ray because their Criterions are all half off... when I found out, they're also having a massive CD sale; turns out they had TONS of albums I've been meaning to add to my collection for even less than what Amazon is charging these days. I went completely apeshit nuts and bought 23 of the things; I think that's the biggest album buy I've ever made since sometime in 1989 right after Lakewood's Tower Records location opened up.

So by then it was dark and I had a few hours to kill, and even though I've been losing lately, decided to play some $100 no-limit hold'em at Hawaiian Gardens Casino. Long story short, I had one of the best nights I've had in a while and actually was able to pay for my CDs plus a nice little bonus with what I won. :-)

So, sorry to gloat, but had a great time last night. Anybody else had an evening where *everything* just seemed to go right for a change? Nice change of pace, gotta admit.

As the Corporate Controller of several manufacturing firms, I am well aware of the gyrations engineers frequently resort to to chase imaginary hobgoblins.....while also being aware of where costs really lie. In one company, I changed all of our stock eighth-watt resistors to 1% metal film, because the stocking cost of having metal resistors in 1%, 2%, and 5% and carbon in 5%, 10%, and 20% was wildly more than the cost of the resistors -- not to mention the difference in size on layouts and the resultant effect on wave-solder quality. In the same place, I replaced a $5,000 pen plotter with a $20,000 laser plotter -- which decreased board design turnaround by an average of two days per board. You might imagine how quickly that paid off in our 2-man board layout group, to say nothing of R+D time.

I also realize that this was in a time when the emphasis was "design so it worked in the showroom, and we'll worry about maintenance later." As the son of a "make-a-nickel" engineer, however, I'm saying that elegant design would have made the high torque unnecessary, because the problems would have been solved in a more appropriate space. Once "released to the wild", there wasn't a graceful way back to elegance, however.

328 They changed the line of succession rules to allow girls to get it in birth order, but it only applies to new children. If Kate's first kid would've been a girl, she would been in line behind William, a queen regnant in waiting. As it is now, she is right behind behind the male kid, but his children will before her.

Before, it was "male preference primogeniture", with all the males at the front, girls only getting if the males didn't make it for some reason.

It goes first born to first born, and you only back up one level if all the children at the end of the current chain are exhausted.

Thus for Harry to get it, William and all his children would have to die or otherwise abdicate. If Harry then croaked, it would back up to Chuck's next brother, Andrew.

Only the girls born after the new rule get the benefit of it. Anne still is behind all her brothers.

There have been all sorts of succession rules. I think with the Saudis, the throne passes through all the male brothers before going down to the next generation.

What you fail to appreciate, is that the VW (and Mazda, who probably got it from NSU) flywheel fixing is an elegant design. One fastener holds the flywheel on, and that fastener also doubles as the pilot bearing. The crank doesn't have to have a flange formed on the end of it to accommodate six large cap screws. For VW, this enabled them to keep oil in the engine by using a large neoprene lip seal, pressed into the crankcase, with the lip riding on a machined collar on the flywheel. This, at a time when most competing engines used graphited rope pressed into grooves in the engine block and rear main bearing cap. The large torque requirement for the fastener is simply not a problem at all.

Wouldn't the right solution have been to have hardened steel plates at the end of the crank and on the flywheel, have 8 pins in the first place, and use normal torque?

What would this cost?

Now, compare it to the current design.

Posted by: Arbalest at November 13, 2015 01:34 AM (FlRtG)

We're talking historical design, not current. Second, you want to take two surfaces, machined flat, and try to clamp them together so hard that they have a meaningful amount of friction?!?!!? Really!???!?? Are we talking van der Waals forces, or does your machining suck?

And if four studs can oval holes when your outlandish over-torque isn't quite torqued enough, can you really say you were using the right materials? I mean, what if you'd machined the surfaces better, so there was half the friction at the specified torque?

Fundamentally, the overtorque looks and smells like a kludge. Increase the number of fixed studs and use a bearing plate of suitable material, and the problem goes away.

Yes, Anna. And I think that gland nut design lasted right to the end, although I think they went to six dowels in the Type 4 engines. I had one apart once, from a '72 Transporter. Type 4's were trouble-prone, IMHO. 1600 dual-port is the best of the breed, but the old 36 horse were pretty durable, too, because they didn't make enough power (or enough heat) to destroy themselves.

Fundamentally, the overtorque looks and smells like a kludge.

It might be. Or it might be the realization that the original design still had some usable strength left.

Increase the number of fixed studs and use a bearing plate of suitable material, and the problem goes away.

Increasing the number of fixed studs in a circular pattern is a bit costly, pre-CNC. It's an extra operation, and to get all studs to handle equal loads, does require just a bit more precision. Given that the design is likely the original (i.e., 1936 or so), and was for The People's Car, the need to keep costs down was likely quite high.

As a kid who never attended kindergarten but went straight into first grade, I can understand that first point. My parents sent me to Catholic grade school but didn't really have the money for kindergarten; first grade tuition was a whopping $5 a month. My Mom had a part time job at a Roses Five and Dime, not getting full time employment until after I entered first grade, so I wasn't 'home alone'. But I will say on my first day in first grade, I was sitting at my desk in one of the two first grade classrooms (in my school, each grade had two classrooms, one with a nun and the other with a lay teacher), the one with the lay teacher (Mrs. Linderman, how the hell I remember that I'll never know). So I was looking around the classroom, as it was a new experience, minding my own business and whistling softly out loud. Next thing I know, I'm taken out of her class and tossed into the nun's class. I guess that was the school deciding that I needed a little discipline. Traumatized ever since. Colonel Bogie's March sends me into fits of panic and paranoia.

As to your other point about friendship and children, I'm throwing the bullshit flag. Talk to every military brat who's had to move every two years. Increasing the number of studs would certainly be impressive the first time ...

Doing it on a mill is easy, provided you always turn the cranks correctly ... every single time ... and therefore, it isn't quite that easy.

Mounting the flywheel on a rotary table on a mill is very much easier, and gives very much better results. There is some setup, but a guide pin might be enough. But it is an extra step.

Putting the same pattern on the end of a crankshaft flange ... for starters, it takes a larger mill to accommodate the length of the crank ... one hole, not a big problem ... 4, 5 or 6 ... more effort, and therefore not cheap.

You really have to overcome this notion that 250 foot-lbs is "overtorquing". It's not. The hex on that gland nut is 36 mm, and the threaded part has to be at least 28 mm, say an inch and a quarter. Standard torque for a fastener that size is going to be close to 200 ft-lbs, just to get enough stretch in the bolt for it to hold. Because that's why bolts hold things: they are stretched a little, and hold by tension. Stretched within their elastic limit, mostly, although as Mike mentioned earlier, there are "torque-to-yield" fasteners now, which get used once, and are thrown away, once removed. Head bolts on most recent engines are such, now.

I was born in the People's Republic of Santa Monica. My dad mostly worked in downtown LA and had family in northern LA county; my mom mostly worked just south of LA and had family in Orange County (to the southeast of LA). Every so often, they'd have a fight where my mom would say, "XXXX, you haven't taken out the trash in two weeks and I'm tired of living next to your stupid relatives" -- to which, my dad would reply, "ok, let's move."

I was such a pain-in-the-ass in first grade (I just know you're all shocked), that I was sent off to second grade for reading and math and allowed to amuse myself with batteries, switches, and light bulbs the rest of the time. This caused quite a quandary at the end of first grade, being that I'd already topped-out 2nd-grade reading and math. This was solved by having me skip second grade, so that I could major in social failure in 3rd grade with a minor in physical inadequacy. That also meant that I've never-to-this-day mastered intermediate fingerpainting, with all that is entailed by that.

When I hit 30, I counted it up -- I'd lived in 30 different residences. I'm now in my 50s. Believe it or not, but some of you who I've never met face-to-face are among my most long-lasting friends.

In addition, the rotary eccentric shaft (like a crankshaft) has a small end diameter, and balance is critical. The end housing also has to be removed past its end, so a large mounting area means a multi-part end housing or a multi-part eccentric shaft.

Each interface is another possible source of failure.

There is much more that is known than is in useful rules-of-thumb......and that's the problem, 'cause when you're trying to make a widget, you don't want to overdesign each screw. It's just estrogen. It wouldn't cause any cognitive impairment, any more than, say birth control pills, which are also estrogen.

The main effect of estrogen is to eliminate hair loss and change fat distribution to breasts thighs and buttocks, rather than the belly. It also makes men sterile.

Pre-ops may also take androgen blockers such as spironolactone and finasteride, but again, that should have no cognitive impairment.
