Quote of the Day I

The idea of a bunch of PhDs in astronomy having to publicly confess their sinful [male] "privilege" at the opening session of a radio astronomy research conference is shockingly indicative of ideological totalitarianism.

-- Janice Fiamengo

Quote of the Day II

Marcus is surely right that tables can turn. What she leaves out is the simple, glaring, fact that the tables are turning on Democrats who've been playing outrageous games with the appointment process for a quarter century. When Robert Bork was defenestrated by Joe Biden, despite Biden's having said he would have no choice but to vote for someone so well-qualified, he was setting the table for payback. When Harry Reid pulled the trigger on the nuclear option (on lower court appointments) he was warned that this would come back to haunt him. When Democrats disgustingly blocked Miguel Estrada from the bench solely because he was a Hispanic, they set the table to be turned. When Barack Obama voted to filibuster Alito, he set the table to be turned.

Cry me no tears now that Republicans are finally putting their shoulders to the table.

-- Jonah Goldberg

Quote of the Day III

"We've got about 35 years worth of oil left in the whole world ."

-- Jimmy Carter in a 1976 presidential debate. 40 years later we're in the midst of a world-wide oil glut.

Quote of the Day IV

But police, like fire in the quote attributed to President Washington, are "dangerous servants and a fearful master. " I tread lightly around police, just as I do around high explosives or high-powered machinery. All are extremely useful. All require proper care, caution, respect, and effective safeguards.

-- Dean Weingarten

Quote of the Day V

Tastier than the ubiquitous potato, more complex than the ignorant pumpkin, the parsnip may be the most unfairly reviled of all the roasting vegetables.

At least by a certain person in this house, who keeps referring to them as "turnips". She's walking on thin ice, let me tell you.

-- Tim Blair

Why Facebook Sucks

It's not just Facebook we're talking about. They own WhatsApp and they own Instagram. And WhatsApp and Instagram are two of the companies that are winning the short messaging war - that are winning the war for Millennial attention and for Millennial users. ...But primarily, Twitter has lost that war. Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp - these are the networks that have billions of users. These are the networks that are getting young users, and Facebook owns two of those three.

The other thing to bear in mind is that Facebook so far has a really really bad track record when it comes to free speech. And not just a bad track record censoring different political opinions like Twitter does. Facebook's moves are even more sinister, in a way. Facebook has teamed up with governments to censor certain political opinions that the incumbent party doesn't like. In Germany, for instance, Facebook has teamed up with Angela Merkel to censor reasonable, respectable, mainstream concern about mass Muslim immigration-or just about mass immigration in general-and has started removing this stuff and classifying it as "hate speech." It is effectively slandering its own users saying that their perfectly reasonable points of view constitute "hate speech" and that they're not going to be allowed on Facebook, and Facebook has promised the German government that this stuff will be removed within 24 hours. That is outright Orwellian. That is outright terrifying.

As Glenn Reynolds notes Facebook doesn't even pretend to not be evil.

PowerLine: The Supreme Court Controversy In One Sentence

I am sure when Democrats tanked Robert Bork in 1987 someone among them-probably even Biden-must have known that what goes around comes around.

Republicans have been waiting 30 years for payback for the shameful rejection of Bork; that day has arrived. Time to pay up, Dems. That's the only sentence you really need to know. Everything else is mere rhetoric.

The Sexual Misery of the Arab World

Sex is everywhere.

Especially after death.

Orgasms are acceptable only after marriage - and subject to religious diktats that extinguish desire - or after death. Paradise and its virgins are a pet topic of preachers, who present these otherworldly delights as rewards to those who dwell in the lands of sexual misery. Dreaming about such prospects, suicide bombers surrender to a terrifying, surrealistic logic: The path to orgasm runs through death, not love.

Remembering 'Kolchak: The Night Stalker'

Only 20 episodes of the 1974 tv show were ever shown yet I have distinct memories of intensely watching them as a very young lad and could probably rattle off the plots for a good 8 to 9 of the episodes even today. And apparently I wasn't the only one affected by the short-lived series.

Only 20 episodes were ever aired, but the show's influence far surpassed its nasty, brutish, and short life on network TV: Among its writers were Robert Zemeckis and The Sopranos creator David Chase, both new to the craft, and generations of rabid fans went on to create their own tributes to Kolchak's grimy and spooky universe. The most enthusiastic among them was a former editor of Surfing Magazine named Chris Carter, who, after securing a TV show of his own, delivered a strong homage to Kolchak and called it The X-Files. On last week's episode-the show is currently on week four of a six-week miniseries revival-a character walked around dressed in a porkpie hat and a seersucker blazer, the iconic uniform of Kolchak's eponymous hero and one of many tributes Carter has paid to his inspiration over the years.

After President Obama's summit with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Taiwan's defense ministry confirmed that China deployed surface-to-air missiles to a disputed island in the South China Sea.

Satellite imagery from ImageSat International shows two batteries of eight surface-to-air missile launchers as well as a radar system on Woody Island, part of the Paracel Island chain in the South China Sea.

A US military official said the imagery viewed appears to show the HQ-9 air defense system, which has a range of 125 miles and would pose a threat to any airplanes, civilian or military, flying close by, Fox News reports.

I think Disqus is the best platform. The problem is when you get 200+, which is the norm here, it becomes unwieldy. It's also more difficult to be anonymous on it than it used to be--though it's still much better than Facebook.

For a commenting system, Facebook just sucks. Even beyond the Orwellian parts, as a format, it just sucks. If you have 10 people commenting on a post, fine. If you get more than that, it becomes a big pain to keep up with a discussion and find the good stuff.

Facebook comments are just lame and restrict commenting to only those who are on FB. Sorry, I'm not joining FB just so I can comment on a website.

Hello! Let us read this in honor of your arrival:

Fragments from the Book of Abdul

In the antique city of dead R'lyeh.
Cthulhu dreams and waits. In the pit
of time the unspeakable lies in wait.
That is not dead which can eternal lie.
R'lyeh, your blocks of stone seals
the ritual that gives birth to fear
Cthulhu fhtagn,
Cthulhu fhtagn.
Iaeeh.
Iaeeh.

Let he who knows how to invoke the
stones act. it is time. Let the shadow
of Cthulhu darken the sky. May the
servitor of the black Goat of the Woods
with a thousand youngs sound his flute
in honour of the unspeakable
Cthulhu fhtagn,
Cthulhu fhtagn.
Iaeeh.
Iaeeh.

May he who may not be named cast his
withering gaze upon the unbeliever for
he is the door, the key, and the guardian
of the door and holds you now in his
immense power.

I certainly would not want to see AOS go to Discus, even, much less facebook. Even though I can't post on my ipad.

I just don't get how a so-called conservative site (and I say that loosely) can at all rationalize going with a censoring anti-American outfit such as Facebook.

Fortunately, I don't care about hot Air all that much, though it was in my daily visitings (and I could post on it from my ipad). If something similar happened at AOS, though, I'd probably have to take some kind of lethal substance and end it all.

A few corrective observations.

Last my lazy a** read a figure on it - estimated by UNHCR or the Red Cross, so credible - only about 20% of the people invading Europe were "refugees" of any conventional discription, from Syria. It seems like a small semantic thing, but it ain't. It's kinda the whole enchilada. What Europe is seeing is mass illegal *migration*, NOT a refugee flow.

I am completely baffled by the concept of "payback" in the context of GOP refusal to consider SCOTUS nominees during the balance of this Congress. If a nominee has *ever* been confirmed in these circumstances, it was an outlier (did anyone do the work to confirm that no justice had been confirmed in an election year/final year of a presidential term?). Thus, there is no "payback" at all for the outrageous Dem behavior re Bork and Estrada. It's really entirely subjects, even if SCOTUS appointments are the general issue.

Again, not semantics. "Payback" - the utter lack of which has proved disastrous for American governance - would have been quite different. In the Estrada case, the GOP should have race-baited the bejeesus out of the situation, screaming (incl. from the presidential podium) that the Dems were blocking the best nominee for a lower court in decades because of his ethnicity.

The Dems' nuclear option stunt more recently should absolutely have been met, upon the GOP's capture of the Senate majority in 2014, with a complete shut-down of further judicial appointments, period. None. Zero. For the balance of Obama's term. Again, as always with all actual serious political moves the likes of which we literally never see from the GOP, accompanied by an extremely vituperative and loud assault on the Dems for breaking long-standing traditions in order to damage the country by putting anti-Constitutional freaks on the bench.

A socialist who lies about it? A plan so devious it just might work on the GOPe.

Posted by: t-bird at February 17, 2016 12:18 AM (ANVXm)

The problem with "moderate" in this country is who defines our political vocabulary - the media. They've already given us a world where our left wing is authoritarian and our right wing is libertarian (the exact reverse of the original definitions).

Having an agenda to push, they've defined moderate as a millimeter to the right of what they are pushing for and those who don't pay attention believe them. I believe in the Constitution as it was written, and that we should defer to the intent of the people who wrote it when there's doubt on any matter, and they call me an extremist. It'd be laughably absurd if it were not our reality.

No SCOTUS deaths would make me happy.

Only somebody, finally, at last, talking plainly about the problem with the courts, might do that.

The transformation of the courts into unaccountable, unconstitutional super legislatures (for dummies, for the most part). Explain it, hammer it, scream it, don't stop, confront the idiotic Dems/press/degraded legal education/etc. with it.

Or - of course - Congress finally, at last, exercising some of its constitutional responsibilities to limit the jurisdiction of courts that have completely exceeded their authority.

One, or two, or 1,287 judges and justices dying? Utterly immaterial to the problem, which would continue (there are lots of replacements available to perpetuate the problem).

363 Years ago, G. Gordon Liddy read some piece by some super prude about a good Christian woman should tame her husband's desires. I don't know if it was a parody or not, it could be, but it was a hoot.

Sex was just a wifely duty, necessary for children, but otherwise was to be discouraged, and the old biddy had helpful tips on how to do that.

First no nudity. The wife was never to allow the husband to see her naked in full light. The idea was to discourage the randy bastard from trying anything.

He might want to kiss her on her body for goodness sakes. The wife was supposed to tighten up and ball her hands into fists any time her new husband tried anything sick like that.

It went on and on.

370 Reminds me of yet another Soviet-era joke, and one that will come in handy, I'm sure:

A soviet and an American soldier bayonet one another and die, simultaneously.

Up to the Gates, and St. peter lets them know they can't come in, because they've both spilled blood.

"So," he says, "it's Hell. But because you're both patriots, you can pick - Soviet Hell or American Hell."

Yank asks what's the difference.

Easy - in American Hell, you live just as you did in America, but you have to eat a bucket of shit every morning. In soviet Hell, it's the same as the soviet union, but you have to eat two buckets.

Yank chooses American Hell. Soviet, as a patriot, chooses Soviet Hell.

Several hundred years later, at the border between Soviet Hell and American Hell, the two men, standing guard, recognize each other and get to talking.

Soviet asks ho'ws American Hell treating you?

It's okay, just like the life I remember, but that bucket of shit every morning.....terrible. How's Soviet Hell?

It's okay, just like the life I remember, but most mornings, there's only one bucket, and usually there's no shit in it at all.

Farmer: "Are you sure?"

"Yes"

"So there's no throne of God?"

"No, there isn't."

Nah I don't think that's it. I think it is more like, the leftist thinks that if you are a good person, you have to vote for the person who promises to do the most "good things", no matter how shallow or trustworthy of a promise that is, and if you don't do that, for any logical reason whatsoever, then you are not a good person. The vote is intimately connected with personal moral character. That is why politics is so religious for them.

398 BourbonChicken, exactly. You understate it. That's my point up above. Simply following the long historical pattern in not confirming a nominee during an election year would not amount to anything approaching "payback" for Bork/Estrada/Alito/Thomas. Or for the incredibly damaging cram-down of freak nominees for the DC Circuit via the nuclear option.

when you get 200+, which is the norm here, it becomes unwieldy. It's

For a commenting system, Facebook just sucks. Even beyond the
Orwellian parts, as a format, it just sucks. If you have 10 people
commenting on a post, fine. If you get more than that, it becomes a big
pain to keep up with a discussion and find the good stuff.

420 As for Islam and its Orgasm problem, I find myself unable to care that brainwashed men who brutalize their women as subhumans and rape little boys have the overwhelming desire to strap on a suicide vest and blow themselves up in order to gain some shot at some feeble imaginary bliss. I do wish they would refrain from killing other people in their fruitless quest for joy. Both God and nature have generously apportioned man and woman to know bliss throughout their lives. Not just sexual bliss, but, the bliss that comes from seeing your children born, or passing a tough spot in your life stronger than ever, or from finishing something difficult, or any of a thousand thousand other joys.

There is a wide moral gap between feigning/displaying suicidal intentions in a desperate attempt to gain attention for an existential crisis; and feigning suicidal intentions in a dickish attempt to gain attention.

It is extremely curious how a group of people using a nic might ghoulishly continue to use it after one of their members threatened suicidal intent using the nic, then carried through with it. Ordinary people might recoil from these horrific events, not engaging in dickish behavior that gets them banned under the now-tainted nic....not wanting to dishonor the dead by besmirching his character posthumously.

If there's one thing the Horde excels at, it's determining the personality behind a nic....no matter how many times the nic is changed. Did anyone ever think OG CELTIC-AMERICAN was more than one person? Did anyone ever feel like the banned OGs were different from the pre-banned OGs and are different from 'Apologies'? I didn't.

If OG wants help, he can cut the crap and ask for real help -- and in our usual clumsy, incoherent fashion, we'll do our best to help him. 'Apologies' isn't going to guilt-trip me into anything -- his voice is only valid if OG is actually dead.....and I went above-and-beyond in my concern when OG was merely threatening.

Moving on to equally distressing topics for a second, before I forget.

At the reloading bench yesterday for a bit (30 carbine), had the radio on. Some sort of 30-second commentary thinggie, by Tom Brokaw.

Topic: angry electorate.

Tom's insight (paraphrased, but accurate): hard to say exactly where voter anger comes from, but some possibilities are the disastrous Iraq war, with today's ISIS terrorism, gridlock in Washington, and richpeople getting richer while the middle class struggles.

No, I'm not making this up.

Having listened to a fair amount of Radio Moscow commentary, both recorded and live in the good ol' USSR, I cannot say it was any less delusional and ridiculous than this. And yet there are more than 100 people, many of them not abusing prescription medication,in the US who could hear this and notbe stunned in disbelief.

I'm a CPA, so I'm professionally paranoid in the first place.....but this falls apart from the get-go. OG throws a post which very subtly says "suicidal" -- so subtly, that I'm the only one who gets it. I make further inquiries the next day and find that, yes, it is a suicide threat -- and alert the Horde to it. I go looking for OG over the course of days and find him showing up under another nic. And now 'Apologies' shows up with OG's voice to claim I didn't do enough and some cock-and-bull scheme about everyone in a medical group continuing to post as the dead guy after he offed himself -- no matter how creepy and implausible this sounds.

I want to be sympathetic, but this is insulting. Truth can be stranger than fiction, but I'll need a published obit to even begin to consider it.

468 Well, Ralph, it's my understanding that Trump is pretty quick on his feet handling actual hecklers. He will either disarm them with some wit, or play them for fools. But when "heckling" changes from mocking, or asking "inconvenient" questions, and progresses to shouting obscenities or chanting to shout down the speaker, thereby preventing legitimate attendees at an event from hearing the speaker they came (and probably paid) to hear, then it's time for them to be given the bum's rush.

Obama will say, "How can this man be unqualified to serve on the SC when he was confirmed by this very Senate 97-0 to serve on the USCA less than 2 years ago?"

The nomination will be followed by some mean questions from the Judiciary Committee, which will barely pass the nominee out of committee. The confirmation vote will pass with several votes to spare.

If you had socked your first comment as "zombie Ernst Rohm", the sarc might have been more apparent. Just sayin'. But the real, historical Brownshirts were as much or more into disrupting or breaking up meetings of opposing parties as they were into providing "security" for Nazi gatherings. And we have seen no evidence of Trump doing that. Or even accusations, for that matter.

The internet is mostly lemmings. Software is never the issue. Traffic tends to be rather sticky ... until something falls out of fashion and then the traffic disappears.

There's no reason why ebay has so much business (especially the way they have abused their customers over the years) but people are just too lazy to find other auction sites (and, frankly, any 7 year old could write the software for an auction site ... and likely have it much better than ebay's crappy interface). SO ebay maintains tons of traffic based on nothing other than its name. Farcebook is no different. And it builds on itself as others (as per the hotair move) jump onto the retard bandwagon.

There is precious little on the internet that is difficult or expensive to replicate the features of.

The output of a vote is binary, so in that sense you could get away with appointing a retarded monkey to pull a lever, and the system would manage to creak on. Maybe the justices should be required annually to carry out some complex task, like take some sort of legal aptitude test, in order to weed out idiots like Lynch.

Just cause no one else commented doesn't mean no one else thought the whole incident (on both sides) was churlish... sort of like when Trump had hecklers kicked out after removing their coats.

Nor is Ralph the only one who fears a Trump Presidency. That is not hate OR the fake TDS that Trumps lovers around here tend do dismiss contra commenters around here with. It is a recognition that Trump has no conservative philosophical center and that his love of America (which I believe is very genuine) wouldn't stop him from doing things through incompetence/love of deal making/affinity and comfort with the current crony system that would not move this country off the destructive path it is on.

OTOH, there is a great big difference between removing a heckler while being churlish and what the brownshirts did to people so the Hitler reference was out of line. Ralph/Brownshirt, you will engage with people here in a more constructive manner if you understand that going full Godwin tends to shut down discourse.

That phrase is from an Italian girlfriend. Non-native speakers can be very inventive with the English language, especially if they are linguists themselves and know what they're playing with.

He's linking to published stories.

There is a big untold story in Germany these days, and I'd like to find a way to tell it. I don't know it yet. I need someone to invest in sending an alcoholic with no journalism experience to go there and get the story.

I read a couple of German newspapers online every day. For some things, like when the German Wings plane went down or when nastiness happens in Ukraine, it puts me way ahead of readers of domestic press.

I'd got the sense over the last six months that I was becoming increasingly less informed by the German press when it came to the refugee crisis. I asked my friend Juergen about it. He started sending me links.

He says that 90% of the press is dictated by the government or by simple political correctness. It's like in the days of the DDR or of Adolf. (I'm not Godwin-ing, I'm quoting him). The AfD (very roughly, the Tea Party) has no seats in parliament. It has become the rule of one man (woman, in this case) rather than the rule of law.

I am seriously scheming a way to get back over there and learn what's what.

Eh, I think it did influence the 2012 election results by effectively taking out (distracting) strong opposition to Obama. That plus all of the various DNC vote manufacturing schemes. You don't have to silence everyone, just the key people withing groups (Bing Richard Fernandez's "the broadband empire and the game of drones")

696 I guiltily admit I've spent most of the morning watching and rewatching the Caroline Wozniacki bodypainting video. Pretty awesome.

Yes, it's easy to know great art when you see it!

697 I used to read and comment on AoS and Hot Air about equally. Count me as another that won't use FB, so goodbye, Hot Air. It was a good run, but as far as I'm concerned, it's over.

Now it's just another TownHall, and although I still get their emails, I quit reading that mess quite a while ago.

Posted by: Tom Servo at February 17, 2016 08:40 AM (V2Yro)

698 LukeWarm Air is getting people to comment with FB. I think a lot of those people will be looking for new jobs soon, so if you need to hire and want a non-leftist moonbat, there you go.

699 679 And speaking of floaters. Any HA updates? How awful is it over there now that they've officially shot themselves in the head?
Posted by: NotCoach at February 17, 2016 08:36 AM (rsudF)

It's ugly...someone above was saying there are vile racist comments being posted there now by Facebook trolls. I took a brief look at what was apparently the QOTD thread, I think it had maybe 50 badly-organized comments, many of which were people saying they thought they'd give it a try, but didn't like it and were leaving.

707 i had read that Germany had been quite sophisticated or cosmopolitan when they fell for the Hitler ruse before.

Yes, willow, I look at Germans as "us", not "them".

Before the Nazi era their conception of themselves was "das Land der Dichter und Denker", the land of poets and philosophers. All the great breakthroughs in chemistry and physics were German. Half of them were by Jews who thought themselves German.

The older I get the more "history" becomes "the day before yesterday".

On the off chance that you haven't been following this series, my dad kept a journal throughout his time in Europe in WWII. He was not in a foxhole on the front lines. He was counterbattery Field Artillery officer, giving his perspective on events at the front as he learned of them.

730 >> There was a bit of ill-founded (IMHO) criticism about FCC Commissioner
Ajit Pai here last night. He's the only one on the Commission that has
tried to alert the public to some of the details of the Net Neutrality
business as well as 1A threats.

Posted by: Hrothgar

That's my impression as well. iirc, it's a panel of 3 and he's the only non-TFGbot. So he's always outvoted, but sounding various alarms.

So I went and looked it up, and there are 5 commissioners of which 2 are of the R persuasion.

731 So I watched that white privilege video while waiting at the airport yesterday in the wee hours of the morning. And while watching the video I looked around me at the gate. So we're waiting for a 6:30 flight, which means everyone there got up at 5am or earlier to get their to the airport in time.

It was almost all business travelers. And of those business travelers, 80% were men and of that 80%, 90% were evil white men.

These are the people flying off to places to make shit happen....whether sales getting done or engineers building shit or IT peeps doing their thing or whatever.

THIS is why evil white men succeed. Because at 5am we're out of bed crawling our way to make the 6:30am flight to Denver. And I'll be damned if I'll be ashamed of my so-called privilige you fucking leftist fucks.
