EMT 12/20/15 [krakatoa]

Home again, home again, jiggity-jig.

Fingers crossed, my travels are done until sometime in January. In fact, I'm lucky enough to have the rest of the year off, and I intend to make the most of it.

Home projects, playtime with the little girl, a little long-delayed video game action, and a variety of delectable treats are in the plans.

And since I couldn't seem to go anywhere this past week without someone coughing on me, I expect I'll instead be laid up with whatever ick is popular these days.

121 I wanted to follow up on something that I mentioned last night.

Last night I proposed the hypothesis that Republicans are actually acting rationally when they vote for these big-spending omnibus bills, in the sense that they are following where the votes are for their constituents. They aren't traitors or sellouts, they are doing what their constituents want. And case in point, I found this poll:

http://tinyurl.com/z4xvj8l

Basically, it says that majorities of Republicans are only in favor of cutting spending when that spending is foreign aid, or welfare for the poor. But all other spending, there isn't a majority of Republicans in favor of cutting it. In fact, according to the poll, 46% of *Republicans* want to *increase* spending on education, not decrease it. 44% want health care spending to decrease but 40% want it to stay the same! And these are Republicans, in the age of ObamaCare!

I think we here fail to appreciate how unpopular cutting spending really is. I mentioned the case of Jindal in Louisiana last night. I don't have solid proof but from what I understand, Jindal is unpopular right now in Louisiana because he tried to implement actual conservative reforms, which ended up cutting some middle-class bennies and they are now angry at him.

This isn't to excuse Ryan or Republicans for the really terrible parts of the omnibus bill, the H2B part is awful, not demonstrating hardly any restraint at all is terrible, but when push comes to shove, it seems as if those of us who want spending cut are in the minority even among fellow Republicans.

The spending bill that President Obama signed into law on Friday provides an increase in funding to the Internal Revenue Service, a rare win for an agency that has been on the outs with congressional Republicans.

A bill advanced by the House Appropriations Committee earlier this year would have slashed IRS funding by $838 million, while a bill passed by the Senate Appropriations Committee would have reduced funding by $470 million. Instead, the spending package gives the IRS a nearly $300 million bump.

157 Baking and yoga: The excuses that get killer thugs out of Gitmo

It doesnt take much to get released from Guantanamo these days. Just argue youre a family man who likes baking. And look, youll even touch a woman!

In 2007, the Administrative Review Board set up by the Bush administration agreed that he( al-Qosi) was high-risk and said continued detention is necessary.

That all changed in 2012, after Obama intensified efforts to clear out Gitmo.

Suddenly, the administration was buying his defense teams argument that al-Qosi was merely a cook who originally met bin Laden at a camp where they went for recreation and horseback riding and that he only ended up at al Qaedas headquarters in Kandahar to get married.

The review process is a joke. Taking up yoga has been used as an argument for rehabilitation. At least five different inmates have told the same sob story to Obamas Periodic Review Board about wishing only to see their ailing mother before she passed away.

The board, which includes liberal activists from the Justice and State departments, meets regularly in Arlington, Va., via video teleconference.

Makes ya feel secure and all warm and fuzzy all over ha?

169 You toss out Ryan, and he lands a multi-million-dollar K-street job. That escape route needs to be demolished.

My NJ Rep voted No on the omnibus, even though he wanted the oil exports. Of course we know certain ones are allowed to vote No if the leadership already has enough votes.

So how close are we to an Article V Convention? We're down to our last few chips, unless Trump comps us some more.

SPOILER ALERT - though after 62 years, has no one here seen this movie?!

In fact, the character of Sefton is perceived as greedy, selfish and un-American - all in line with leftist memes. Until the end, when in fact he's the one that is marginally patriotic, or at the very least is not the one selling out his fellow Americans (although he is angling for "some reward money from Momma.")

The screening here at chez Sefton will be 6PM promptly this Thursday.

Last night I proposed the hypothesis that Republicans are actually acting rationally when they vote for these big-spending omnibus bills, in the sense that they are following where the votes are for their constituents.

Posted by: chemjeff at December 20, 2015 08:19 AM (uZNvH)

I think you're right. Everybody wants to cut spending, except for programs that benefit them personally.

There's an old political saying: "Don't tax you, don't tax me, tax the fellow behind the tree." Same goes for spending.

183 This isn't to excuse Ryan or Republicans for the really terrible parts of the omnibus bill, the H2B part is awful, not demonstrating hardly any restraint at all is terrible, but when push comes to shove, it seems as if those of us who want spending cut are in the minority even among
fellow Republicans.

Read last night that it was the Republican leadership who increased the H2B visas. The Democrats were actually against the increase (well, they didn't ask for an increase). So that's another win for our side, amIright?

189 Christian churches have been refining their security plans ahead of receiving some of their largest crowds of the year for Christmas. On a FEMA webinar last Wednesday on protecting houses of worship, the chief security executive at The Potter's House, the Rev. T.D. Jakes' megachurch in Dallas, gave tips about behavior that should raise concern, such as a congregant arriving in a long coat in hot weather. If needed, church greeters could give a hug and feel for weapons, said the executive, Sean Smith.

"I call it the Holy Ghost pat-down," Smith said.

191 Finally home from a week's long trip to Orlando. So glad to be out of that pit. I never could stand that place.

I didn't watch the Dembate, but 18-year old Jr. Black did. He will be voting for the first time in '16. He will not be voting Dem, but according to him, alot of his friends in that same age bracket support Sanders. I guess they all want to 'take it to the man' when they don't really know what it even means. I don't recall this when I was 18 (like, a thousand years ago), but my age group didn't really seem to be one big mass block that generally coalesced around one candidate. I get the impression the youngsters of today do just that. I saw a lot of young dummies in Orlando driving around with their Sanders bumper stickers, too. If I had my druthers, the voting age should be raised to at least 25.

By the way, this is what we refer to in the screenwriting trade as the "pet the dog moment." If your lead character is an anti-hero, or need-do-well in one way or another, a trick to make the audience root for him is to show him doing something nice/noble early on.

At the outset of the picture, Sefton is seen as an uncaring, unfeeling greedy hustler, only out for himself. And when the stove is about to be removed from the barracks he's cooking a real egg in butter, while the rest of the guys are eating watered down potato soup. When Duke gets angry and is about to deck him, Sefton gives the cooked egg to the shell-shocked Joey.

From then on, to the audience, he's not really as cold and heartless a bastard (and worse) as the rest of the guys think he is.

Basically, there too few Conservative voters and way too few Conservative politicians.
