Charlotte Observer Lies
The Charlotte Observer continues it's blatant support for it's anti-Americanism, even if it means bold-faced headline lies. The headline reads, "What will happen to Kayla? An expired auto tag and an arrest are about to tear her family apart."
That's a damn lie. What is about to tear her family apart is her mother willingly and continuously breaking federal laws. She's an illegal immigrant. She's broken the law. But the Observer wants it to be YOUR fault that she might be separated from her mother. It's not, it's her MOTHER'S FAULT. Don't blame me, don't blame the system -- HER MOTHER IS A CRIMINAL.
The whole rest of the article is crap, trying to make everyone feel sorry for poor Kayla because HER MOTHER IS A CRIMINAL. I guess that's why I'm considered cold hearted -- because I don't care that the CRIMINAL has a kid. Sorry folks, the criminal code doesn't differ based on your family circumstances. Maybe Kayla's mother should have thought about the damn consequences BEFORE SHE BROKE THE LAW!

You forgot Newt Gingrich. Seriously, though, I think that there is a void now that Allen is struggling so much with his re-election bid. I am impressed with Romney, although I'm not totally comfortable with his shift on abortion from somewhat pro-choice to a firmly pro-life position. I wrote a previous post on that hereIt does seem that the shift is politically motivated, but I am inclined to believe that his view is genuine.
My ideological ideal is someone like Gingrich, rather than McCain, but I don't think Newt can win. So Romney would probably be my second choice if I had to pick from the current field of candidates.
Sorry I got a little long-winded there.

Truth About Light Rail & Safety

Major traffic accidents that involve light rail are becoming worse. With developers and city officials not providing safety features needed for motorists, the number of accidents are become alarming. The powers that be want you think differently. Ask them, if light rail is so safe, why are people being killed?
The accidents have usually resulted in the rail cars to derailed and power poles knocked over; causing major congestion for lengths of time while the accident scene is being cleared. Fatalities are not limited to motorist but pedestrians as well.
August 11, 2004, Associated Press reported that Houston, Texas is averaging six crashes a month — a rate 20 times worse than the average for the nation's 17 light-rail systems
Interesting, studies are devoted to improving light rail transit safety through improved signal and traffic systems crossings. Is it a wonder that many consultants find this to be a source of lucrative and steady employment?
Monorails have some of the best safety records and cities should look at this. Monorail, being grade-separated, cannot meet pedestrians, bicycles, or motor vehicles; therefore, no consultants need to be paid to study ways to avoid collisions. Former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt was open to using a monorail system for state but did not have enough support.
Construction is not the only concern for light rail. Many other areas of concern exist with light rail and safety. For example: passengers boarding without buying tickets. This has been a major problem around the country. It has taken major crackdowns and costs deal with problem.
Buses have drivers that collect the fares as passenger comes on. Riders of light rail are required to purchase tickets using vending machines on station platforms before they get on. One of the advantages of light rail, CATs said, is it allow for rapid boarding. In addition, the driver, locked in a booth, is able to concentrate on operating the train.
Light rail systems across the country find it is too expensive to have an employee checking tickets on every train, so they leave the task to police officers and fare inspectors. They make random trips up and down the line or position themselves at a station, asking to see tickets on board or once passengers have exited. Another difficulty is checking tickets with the random stops, with people coming and going.
With ridership of light rail low in cities, it has open a door for serious crimes such as rape and robbery. The problem has been the same everywhere: not enough police and personnel. What will our city officials do? It took them several years to hire new police officers the last time they were needed.
Our city has allowed our public safety take a back seat to the bureaucratic correctness of development. The same applies with Homeland Security. Charlotte is a sitting duck for a chemical attack. Terrorists could use a train that is carrying chemicals and release it upon Charlotte. Even worse are the many train cars that already sit on the tracks by schools and parts of our city. Throughout the world there have been all kinds of train accidents that have occurred with chemicals.
Colonel David Hunt, a military consultant to President Bush and various media outlets, spoke in Charlotte after the terrorist attacks that took place in London, England, which involved their commuter train. In the Q&A section, he was asked if Charlotte leaders should be concerned about light rail and rail. Colonel David Hunt replied most definitely and was concerned about the city's plans for rail. Several city council members were upset with this type of question. If a terrorist attacked or a train accident happened that involved toxic chemicals people would not have a chance. Just think: if this would happen near a school or downtown what would the outcome be!?
Mayor Pat McCrory and city officials have heard these concerns and nothing has changed. This is what occurs when heritage and democracy have gone. Officials seem to look over issues and want to band-aid city problems by different committees. Mayor Pat McCrory an elected official is accountable to the citizens of Charlotte, still has not enacted to any of these matters.

So now they are trying this in Charlotte? I guess the Gov REALLY wants a lite rail system someowhere in NC. Since it is pretty much toast in the Triangle, Charlotte gets to deal with it.
Write to Sen Dole now, because Charlotte will need Federal money. Time to derail the train!

But does that $500 mil pricetag include the continuous cost of subsidizing the system since no one will ride it?
It is the kind of boondoggle only a Dem would support. And, soon, they will bring out platitudes like "it helps the poor" and it is "for the children."
They tried the poor one in raleigh, but, considering that the only poor people that would ride it were the ones going to Cary to clean rich peoples homes, didn't go over too well.
I would support one if it went were people wanted to go, and was cost effective. But, since that is impossible with gov't......

They have officially given up reasons to support the train. Seriously. The attitude of the city council now is, "We've gone this far, we're not stopping now."
This was after all their excuses like "environment" and "the poor" were crushed. It's sad, really, but they honestly don't even try and defend building the damn thing any more, they just build it and ignore anyone who complains.
And no, of course that current figure is only building it, not running it. And the $500 million is only the current estimate, it hasn't been built yet, and that's not including the recent requests for cash from builders to actually BUILD density to support the damn thing!

Railroad design is has a very high status but the basic physics for an ulta modern train are the same as the physics were in the 1800s.
Gravity does not change around,yet,so something as simple as a comic book style layout can show almost anybody the math and basic dynamics of the designs.
A lot of our economy is based on having people to go to college for about ten years before their ideas about railroads are ever seen, but an eighth grade student can almost duplicate the same design.
People don't like that part,people don't like train crashes either.
Almost nobody has their own homebuilt monorail in their backyard to experiment with and try new ideas, just talking about something like that will get people upset.
I have no idea what might be in the mind.. of any idiot who would want.. a train to crash.
I do know that if there are only four guys in the state who know how a train works, that might be a weakpoint.
If everybody knew how the machine worked, then everybody would know a threat when they saw one.
Try this...,it is fun, a choo choo train..., that looks right, but it is built with titanium ,and composite materials and ceramics and a great stereo and carpet and custom seats like a luxury car,and yes it still runs on coal, but the exhaust is built to take a lot of the toxins out of the smoke.
Then this thing would be so light and so... fast with excellent brakes and then...
Then the good part, how do you take it apart, pull up the tracks and leave town if the politicians start acting like spoiled brats?
That is also physics, basic math, there is no rule embedded in the Chart of Elements or the laws of physics that claims trains must hold still and decay until some future generation comes up with a way to get the money, to remove the old train.
We can't negotiate with a terrorist,all they want to do is freak us out. The idea of turning a bunch of high school age people loose with the finest tools and materials to build better trains, will probably freak people out too.
What if they got ahead of us and we couldn't understand what they had built?
I have fifty buttons on the remote control for my TV, I can't figure them all out.. and my cell phone has a better education than I do, and those things were built by fifty year old guys who finally got to the top of the dogpile in the architecture world.
Show the customer the blueprint of a train, and ask the customer how they would like the thing modified to allow them to protect themselves.
The bad guys will be basing plans on people never asking anybody anything or being prepared to try a new suggestion.
The last thing they want to run into is a train
we know all about, and then we might not invite the military to the party when we go to their town and ask what the hell that little stunt was about.

Where are our heroes?
I wish there were some real men, some heroes to be found in the world today: real heroes. And I'm not talking about the person who goes out of their way to walk an old lady across the street. I'm talking about REAL heroes.
We've got

We need men. We need the type of man who fought in WWII. We need men who will stand up to evil, call it evil, and destroy it. Can you imagine if Hitler had wanted to come talk to churches in Harlem in 1942?
At times like this, I seriously think there's no hope any longer for America and freedom. WWII veterans, I apologize for letting this once-great country that you defended fall apart in your lifetime. The free America from the last century is no more.
Sorry, no funnies today. This realization is just too much right now.
P.S. Never fear, I'm not hopeless by any means -- just hopeless for America.

As is often the case, my glass-half-empty pal, I am going to try to buck you up with some suspiciously good news; hubby showed me a story in the NRA's magazine "American Hunter". It was an article giving credit where 2nd Amendment credit was due.
Some background needed before I proceed; we moved to Texas from New Mexico where dumocrap folks brag about how many times they vote and Bill Richardson was about to be elected governor. We decided Texas would be a better place to live....and we were sooooooooo correct!
Bill Richardson has done some good things in NM, one of which is that he is reportedly about to sign a bill for a "right to carry". For the NRA to tout it, it must be true.
As a licensed concealed carry, my faith still lies in the Spirit of America! Take heart, my friend.

Well Ogre, I have felt this way for a while now, I couldn't find the words for it but apologizing to the WW2 vets is the best way to do it.
We have let our country become so wrapped up in PC that we have forgot that sometimes PC is the last thing needed. Career politicians and Liberal judges have ruined our nation. This falls on the shoulders of both parties. and our selves, we elected the idiots in office believing that they meant what the said. However after the votes are counted, they forget about the folks they work for US.
Hero's are guys like Tancredo and the sheriff in Texas with the tents for convicts.
But because of our PC culture they are branded as racist or hate mongers. half empty it is.

Ogre, as bleak as the situation appears, it is nevertheless not wholly hopeless. My surmise is that the appearance conceals two "signed numbers." The first is positive: the number of genuine, manly American patriots ready to do whatever's necessary to defend this country. The second number is negative: the number of lily-livered, offend-no-one parlor pinks who keep screaming that America itself is to blame for the evil in the world, and that we should concentrate on our own faults rather than the harms being done to us.
The two numbers may be nearly equal, but the latter group has the Old Media megaphone at its service, which is still a large edge in the national discourse.

Dagney, I actually think concealed carry laws are a mixed bag. It's nice that freedoms aren't directly eroding there, but I'm appalled that I should be required by government to ask permission to defend myself. Personally, I refuse to get one of those permits for that very reason.
Robert, indeed, Tancredo is a good man. But the sheer number of people, forces, and money allied against him should absolutely terrify anyone who even remotely supports his ideas.
Francis, I really am not sure if those numbers are equal. It's really quite impossible to tell how many people fit into that category of positive numbers. Certainly there's some, but at least from my observations, the vast majority that I see and interact with are certainly in the negative category -- either that or zeroes who just don't care about anything other than getting little Johnny to soccer practice on time.

Your NC Tax Dollars
So, have you been wondering what your recently increased North Carolina tax dollars are being used for this week? How about TV ads and "web tools" to "combat obesity?" That's what the "NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund" is spending over $127 million on.
Oh, but they claim it's because "Obesity is estimated to cost North Carolina taxpayers more than $2 billion annually in preventable health care costs."
You see, this is what happens when government insinuates itself into citizen's lives. If you allow government to provide your health care, then they can do literally anything in the name of "saving your tax dollars" -- including spending more money!
I've scanned my copy of the Consitution, and I know I have an old one, but I can't find anything in there that says the North Carolina government was established to ensure that no one gets sick and that everyone who does get sick will be provided any and all possible treatments for their sicknesses. It's wrong, plain and simple, for government to provide healthcare AT ALL.
Oh, how I yearn for freedom.

And Butch, sorry about that, you must have had bad timing. The servers on which this site lies has been attacked numerous times by terrorists trying to bring down this site and others (okay, mostly others: The Jawa Report). The servers have been moved, then changed, and are in the process of being replaced. It does stay up MOST of the time, you must have just tried the few times it was down. Sorry.

The American Civil Liberties Union today expressed its disappointment with the House passage of a bill placing undue and unnecessary burdens on Americans' fundamental right to vote. H.R. 4844, the "Federal Election Integrity Act of 2006," requires voters to present a government-issued photo ID in order to vote in federal elections. In addition, beginning in 2010 voters would be required to present a photo ID that was issued based on proof of citizenship in order to vote. The measure passed by a vote of 228-196.
The following can be attributed to Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office:
"Less than two months after the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, the House of Representatives has chosen to pass legislation disenfranchising the very citizens the VRA was designed to protect. No eligible citizen should have to pay to vote. There are voters who simply don't have photo ID and requiring them to purchase one in order to vote would be tantamount to a poll tax. This measure will disproportionately impact racial and ethnic minority voters, senior citizens, voters with disabilities, and others who do not have photo identification nor the financial means to acquire it."
What a load of crap! This ridiculous "poll tax" meme is quickly making its rounds.

First - I would LOVE to have a NCDL, can you send me one?
Second - wasn't one of the provisions of this to require states to issue a state ID (not a DL, but an ID card) to ANYONE regardless of ability to pay (just prove you are a citizen and a legal resident of the state)? Although, for those poor illegal aliens who cannot afford forged documents, that means they cannot vote. I am so upset about this, I may not be able to sle....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The only requirement to get a NCDL is to show up. Just walk in the DMV office and ask for one -- no proof of residence is required.
And yes, the whole idea that this would disenfranchise someone because they're poor is an out and out lie. But since when has the truth mattered to the ACLU?

Education in NC
Govn'r Easley has decided that to fix education, he needs to spend some money. Since it's For The Children (TM), then it's okay. He wants to audit all the schools in the state.
The audit, Easley said, was an effort to ensure that money was being spent wisely. The review is expected to cost the state $300,000.
Am I the only one who sees the contradiction of spending $300,000 to audit schools as a way to spend money wisely?
Look, government has failed. Government cannot educate our children. It really doesn't matter how much money is spent, they are completely incapable of completing the task at hand. The education system across the country, not just in North Carolina, is not even interested in educating children. They're interested in passing tests so they can get more money. The government school system should be shut down. It simply does not work. It's the largest waste of money in the entire state budget. Since it cannot educate children, it's alleged purpose, then why should we keep paying for it?
Of course, if you ask anyone in the education system, they will claim they are a success -- and they are if you accept their terms. To the average person, the purpose of the education system is to educate children. If that's your view, then clearly the program is a complete and total failure. However, if you accept that the purpose is to obtain and spend money, then it's a monumental success! And that is the purpose of the education system to Democrats and bureaucrats.
So, if you want a system to raise and spend money, be happy with the education system in North Carolina, because it's a complete success. However, if you want a system that educates people, the North Carolina education system is an utter failure. Shut it down. And yes, I'm serious.

Atlanta Braves: A Review
Yesterday, Sunday, I traveled from Charlotte to Atlanta to watch an Atlanta Braves game. The drive was about 4-1/2 hours each way. In case you're thinking of going to a Braves game, here is my review and opinion of everything involved.
The Game: 9/10. The Braves played the Marlins. It was a really interesting, close game. The players did a great job (for the most part), including the Braves' left fielder diving over a wall into the crowd to catch a fly ball. The only reason it wasn't a 10 was the horrible play of the Marlins in the 10th inning. After 9 innings, it was tied 3-3. The Marlins scored 4 in the top of the 10th, but then committed 4 errors (not all were scored as errors, but they were errors all the same) in the bottom of the 10th to allow the Braves to score 5. Other than that inning, it was a great game.
