Another Whiny Immigrant for Free Stuff
Yes, folks, yet ANOTHER immigrant is whining that the taxpayers of North Carolina are not giving away ENOUGH free things to criminals. Despite giving away free high school educations, free housing, free food, and tons of other taxpayer-provided free things, old Mai Thi Nguyen says that's just not enough.
She complains that it's too tough for criminals to get a free college education in North Carolina and that the NC General Assembly simply should take MORE money from taxpayers and give it to people who openly commit crimes so that they can "have a chance."
She tries to compare her "rough" life growing up to illegals and is glad no one called her an "illegal." Maybe that's because she wasn't, I don't know, she doesn't admit in the column if she's a criminal. However, she's very clear that you people of the state are simply not giving enough cash to criminals who are invading this country who are nice.
Oh, but Mai Thi Nguyen is an assistant professor in the Department of City & Regional Planning at UNC-Chapel Hill and a GlaxoSmithKline Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Emerging Issues at N.C. State University. In other words, she's a liberal bureaucrat who believes that government should pay for everything for everyone. She's a huge socialist who works in government. What a shock.

Dextre Tripp
Yes, this past weekend once again found the Ogre at the Carolina Renaissance Festival. It really is a load of fun, and it's a place to forget about the daily loss of freedoms and other such nasty thoughts. I took some pictures this time, so I hope to have some pictures and a review of acts up each day this week for your reading pleasure.
First up is, for me, one of the biggest draws of the show. He's been going to these shows to years, and he ALWAYS puts on an absolutely great show. Who is it? It's
Dextre Tripp.

Dextre does a great show with balancing, juggling, and tightrope walking. I've seen all of his shows numerous times, and they just never get old (and no, I'm not rooting for the stage). Here you can see him juggling an apple, a sword, and yes, a running Echo chainsaw. In the background you can see a ladder that he climbs and does other juggling and tricks on. And no, the ladder has no support, he just balances on it.
Every year I head back to see Dextre. And he's a great guy -- I've sat around and talked with him after the shows and he's just a real neat person. If you ever get the chance to see him, you really should -- it's a GREAT show. And if you're ever at the Festival late, be sure and check out him walking up a flaming rope at the Fairhaven stage!

I like Dextre. He is very freindly. My wife has a booth across from Ded Bob and my sons help her. He comes over and talks to them about how to work hard and find something you love to do.
His act is one of the best at the Renfest. He has great balance and dexterity. I can watch him over and over (and I have).

I don't know why, but I can watch him over and over again, too. It's just great to see and he's a real pleasure to be around!
Thanks for stopping along, perhaps this weekend I should ask the women in the booths nearby if they're married to "Skyler the Weird."

New Advertisers
Good reader, do please take a moment to patronize those who kindly support this blog. Two new advertisers are supporters this week:
Observing Hermann. He doesn't have an "about" page, so I can't tell you much about the person who writes this blog. However, it's got lots of interesting stuff about Germany and German politics. Go on, take a peek, you know you're curious.
Also this week, there's a new
BlogAd over at the top of the left column:

Bush Likes Wasting Cash
Stop the Drug War has noticed Bush's latest massive wasting of tax dollars on the war that simply will not be won. The drug war continues with $600 million more TAXPAYER dollars being handed over to Columbia. Everyone, just work a little harder so he can spend the money because he's got to get it from somewhere.

Democrats Select (not elect)
Just to help illustrate how utterly broken the political system is in North Carolina, just look at the latest "election." Dan Blue has just been appointed to a 2-year, 2-month term in the General Assembly, where it is very likely he will seek, and may win, the speaker's seat. And he did it without one single vote from anyone in his district. Instead, he was appointed by "Democrat leaders."
So, just to make this crystal clear: the next speaker of the North Carolina House may have gotten to the seat of speaker without one single vote from a taxpayer in his district.
Explain to me again why I'm supposed to care about elections. Tell me again how my vote is supposed to matter. Tell me again how we're a representative republic where the people who pay the taxes get to elect people to represent them. Oh how I yearn for freedom!

Insurance and NC Kids
Another whiny report was released last week by the so-called "nonprofit*" Action for Children North Carolina. The whine and complain about
the rising number of uninsured children to be a top concern because kids with health insurance often get more health care earlier, before illnesses progress.
Also
there are about 260,000 others [low-income children] who don’t have insurance, he said, adding that the increase in the uninsured numbers show that the public investments aren’t large enough.
Know what my response is? SO WHAT?
By what right is every single person on the planet entitled to health insurance? And just because the government can't pay for it all, that means that "something" should be done? Hey morons, you can't save every person on the damn planet! Shut up! Stop stealing my money for your own personal uses to make yourself look good in front of your friends. You are NOT COMPASSIONATE when you STEAL from me to give health insurance to someone who doesn't deserve it. No, I DON'T CARE. You have NO BUSINESS taking money I earn for YOUR purposes -- NONE. If it's legitimate for you sorry excuses for people to steal my money for this purpose, I should be completely free to break into your house and take anything of yours for my own because I "need" it more than you do.
Nonprofits in North Carolina should be shut down -- they're crap.
** In North Carolina, the definition of a nonprofit is an organization that does not produce anything but instead is supported by the involuntary payments of taxpayers via the Democrat-led General Assembly (and who gives donations of said cash to legislative candidates).

Actually, in North Carolina, about half of all nonprofits have budgets of less than $25,000 a year, and regardless of size the overwhelming majority do not receive any public money.
Posted by: Lex at October 30, 2006 11:45 AM (PcFi9)
2
The amount of the budget really doesn't matter. And why does even ONE of these so-called "nonprofits" get even one penny of government money? If ONE does, then, according to the legislature, then every single one is eligible to get taxpayer cash. That's just plain wrong.
Thanks for stopping along!

Posted by: Ogre at October 30, 2006 02:51 PM (oifEm)
5
Lex,
FYI, they don't receive public money directly. these non-profits receive public money that goes directly into specific isolated accounts set up independently as is required by federal law. So yes, your statistic is correct, but they are the non-profit arm that files the grants. If the grant is approved, employees, goods, services etc. are all paid from that separate entity/foundation/etc. which the Feds have funded.
Posted by: michele at October 30, 2006 06:13 PM (ctpbe)
6
Thanks for the confirmation, Michele. And in NC, they get the money directly from the legislature as line-items in the budget, believe it or not.
Posted by: Ogre at October 30, 2006 07:14 PM (oifEm)
7
Actually, Ogre, the amount of the budget does matter, for two reasons. First, nonprofits with annual budgets don't have to file "tax returns" (actually, statements of income and expenditure, since they're tax-exempt) with the IRS. And nonprofits that don't file those forms, called 990s, generally aren't eligible for government grants in most places.
Second, although North Carolina doesn't specifically ban grants to organizations that small, inasmuch as certain (fairly expensive) auditing requirements accompany such grants, it may as well have.
And why does even ONE of these so-called "nonprofits" get even one penny of government money?
Fair question. The answer, at least hypothetically, is that because the nonprofit can accomplish a public purpose more cheaply than the government can.
Whether that's true in each individual case is an open question, and having reported on fraud-ridden nonprofits several times in the past 20 years, I know it certainly isn't inevitable. But at least in principle, that's the reasoning. One can agree or disagree with the wisdom of that reasoning, of course.
But the fact remains that the overwhelming majority of nonprofits, in North Carolina and everywhere else, get no public money.
Now, to answer the larger question I think you're getting at: Why should taxpayers help pay for health insurance for poor people? Simple cost-benefit analysis. Because if they don't, they inevitably end up paying for medical care via hospital emergency room when the patient is much sicker and the fix much more expensive.
You can argue that taxpayers shouldn't do even that. Heck, philosophically, you can make a pretty good case. But the vast majority of Americans still think it's OK for their taxes to pay for emergency-room care for people who can't afford it, and political efforts to change that way of thinking haven't gotten very far that I'm aware of.
Posted by: Lex at November 01, 2006 03:19 AM (PcFi9)
8
And you do identify the problem: the majority have agreed to FORCE the minority to pay for medical care of the irresponsible. That's when Democracy and freedom ended. The part that people absolutely refuse to understand is that it is NOT compassionate in any way, shape, or form to steal from one person and give that money to another - ever.
And yes, you followed my reasoning. The nonprofits should not get a single penny of taxpayer money. Under the US Constitution, there is NO clause that allows legislators to take money from one group of people and give it to another because they're "nice" or even because they're doing a "public purpose."
We are so far from the concept in freedom in this country that it's beyond hope. I just try to point it out to the few people left who care.
Just because the majority think it's a good idea doesn't make it a right -- nor even a good idea.

OK, I think I better understand where you're coming from now.
Leaving aside for the moment the distinction between "irresponsible" and "unfortunate," let me ask you this: Do you agree or disgree that the principle of taxation "to promote the geneal welfare" (if not authorization for any specific type of tax) is authorized in the Constitution?
Posted by: Lex at November 01, 2006 04:31 PM (PcFi9)
10
"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;"
Be very clear: the general Welfare OF THE UNITED STATES.
Posted by: Ogre at November 01, 2006 04:36 PM (oifEm)

OK, that's Congress and the United States. Does not similar authority reside within the N.C. Constitution for the N.C. General Assembly to do similar things on a state level?

"Non-Profits" in NC
In the Business Journal, there's a nice, friendly press-release article that announces the appointing of board members. However, way down in the article, it unknowingly points out the socialism infesting North Carolina:
Headquartered in Research Triangle Park, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center is a nonprofit corporation supported by the General Assembly.
Did you catch that? It's a "nonprofit," but it's supported by the General Assembly. In other words, this "corporation" is an extension of the state government. It's paid for completely by taxpayers. It does not earn any money, it just takes money from taxpayers. And it's called a nonprofit.
Anyone want to guess what it does with the taxpayer money that it does not earn?
It supports the biotechnology industry throughout the state.
In other words, it uses taxpayer money to lobby the General Assembly to get more money for itself and other companies. Literally, YOUR money (because you can be sure some of it is federal money) is used so a company can give money to politicians in North Carolina.
If we had a government that was doing what a free republic was supposed to do, the "North Carolina Biotechnology Center" would absolutely cease to exist. It has NO purpose other than to give taxpayer money to politicians to spend on themselves! Oh how I yearn for freedom.

Stupid Poll Results
"Democrats winning!" Or so say the "poll results." They claim that
Today Democrats have an 11-percentage point advantage in the Congressional election (49-38 percent), up from a 9-point edge over Republicans two weeks ago.
Almost all Democrats would vote for their party’s candidate (92 percent), and most Republicans would vote Republican (85 percent). Independents are more likely to back the Democrat in their district by 14 points (43 percent to 29 percent).
However, in this type of election, that number is absolutely meaningless. Let me explain why:
In my Congressional District, the Republican will win. The Republican will get about 75-80% of the vote, because this is a vast Republican district. However, if 100% of the Democrats vote Democrat, the Republican might only get 74% of the vote. If only 50% of the Republicans vote, he might get 72% of the vote. And the independents? The vast majority of them (at least in NC) are Democrats who don't want to admit they're Democrats.
The same can be said for the vast wastelands that are Democrat districts (Mel Watt, D-NC). 100% of the Republicans could vote Republican in that district, but when they're outnumbered 2:1, it really doesn't matter.
Due to MASSIVE gerrymandering around the country, there are literally only a few of the 435 seats that might change hands. The only poll that's worth anything is a poll that polls ONLY in those districts.

I'm proud of Sue Myrick
I used to live in Sue Myrick's district. I moved out of the district because the local officials there liked and celebrated high taxes, crappy education, and increased crime. I worked with her and helped her campaigns, and she helped me when I ran a campaign. I've always been happy with her and just about all the decisions she's made in Congress. Now I'm really happy. Support Jim Talent
This week Wictory Wednesday presents Jim Talent for re-election to the United States Senate.
Control of the Senate will come down to three races, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia. Jim Talent is fighting the hard fight in Missouri and he's a solid conservative. It's one thing to lose a seat because the sitting Republican has no conservative credentials, defending a solid conservative however is a must.

Fair Taxes
Fair Tax Blogburst, by Terry Dillard:
With this heated election approaching faster than one could imagine, we thought it would be a time to throw the FT BB into the debates to see where each of our respective candidates reside in these matters.
We have grown fast and have expanded further than Terry and I anticipated in such a short time, which should prove to be interesting as we will hopefully see. Since we have members of numerous states, and numerous districts of the House of Representatives, let us see where the incumbents and their challengers reside when it comes to the Fair Tax.

Stop the ACLU
Crossposted from Stop The ACLU:
Liberals always act shocked and astonished that conservatives believe that an organization claiming to be
the guardian of religious liberty is actually is actually America's
number one religious censor. They will spout off token cases where the ACLU veered from its normal path of hostility toward Christian religious expression to defend free speech. They have a handful of cases they try to convince us with. However, the ACLU's history can easily be looked at and the cases against religious expression far outweigh these token cases. If the ACLU were consistent in its positions on religious liberty despite the religion their defense on the issue would be much easier. However, many cases point out that it isn't religion in general the ACLU fight, but the Christian religion in particular.

Democrat Candidate Lies
Rep. William Delahunt (D-MA). Do you know him? Do you know of him? According to Kit Jarrell, he's a liar. But I did already say he's an elected official, so you really already knew that, didn't you?
Oh, and he's using the fraudulent information to
appear on the ballot as a veteran. Sure, Democrats respect our military veterans...as long as it will get them money and/or power.
A politician lies and says anything to get elected or to get money to spend. A stateman says the truth, no matter who will be "offended" or what the result will be. We need statesmen, NOT politicians.

Have heard anything about the Patty Wetterling Congressional race in Minnesota's 6th District? She has had one of the dirtiest races I've ever seen, including having one of her paid compaign staff volunteer for her opponant's campaign to gain inside knowledge.
Her son was abducted back in the late 80's, and would be about my age if he is still alive, so she has been well known in Minnesota for almost 20 years. She's done good for child advocacy, but is one of the dirtiest politician wanna-be's.

Mr. Ogre - this is my congressman. I suppose after Gerry Studds, the gay congressman who raped the page, anybody looked prety good. He's held the seat since 1996 when Studds resigned.
My two favorite moments from his debate last Thursday:
He has two opponents, a Republican named Jeff Beatty and a Green named Peter White who chided Bill Delahunt about missing intelligence briefings. He called him 'misinformed'. Peter then leaned into the mike and said, 'It's on the front page of the Boston Globe!' Delahunt lost it a little, did a Bill Clinton, wagged his finger at the audience and snarled 'Don't believe everything you read in the BOSTON GLOBE!'. I began to clap, and half the audience joined in, until thye realized what they were applauding...
My SECOND favorite moment - when a really rattled Bill Delahunt was doing his grand wrap-up, he intoned, "I'd like to share a quote from that distinguished author Alexis deToqueville, from 1980..." The audience murmur alerted him to his error, and he said, "I meant 1880."
He then read a quote from 'Amercia and the Amercans, published in 1835.
Another pretender, looking up a quote without EVER cracking the cover on a book!

And I bet he still wins in a landslide, right?
Thanks for the updates!

Vote Jim Puckett -- Priceless!
If you live in Mecklenburg county, feel free to vote early and often. You can vote now without providing any identification, and you can vote any day you like with the "early voting." Feel free to vote more than once if you like, no one will stop you. Oh, and if you're not registered, don't let that stop you, because you can vote without even being registered, thanks to the North Carolina voting laws -- seriously.
If you do choose to vote one or more times, you can vote for Jim Puckett. He's a good guy, seriously. I know him and he's a real straight shooter. His latest ad on YouTube (at least until it's deemed "offensive" by the ultra-liberals at Google) can be found
here. It's a play on MasterCard's "priceless" ads, and it's a good one -- oh, and it's compeltely factual, showing liberals for what they truly are: "I make no apology for raising taxes."

Democrats Dream for Education
Have you seen the recent happenings in Germany related to education? Oh, the left in America would absolutely LOVE this to happen here. Seriously. I'm not trying to be funny or exaggerate at all:
On Friday 20 October 2006 at around 7:30 a.m. the children of a home educating family … were brought under duress to school by police
In America, this is the dream of the educational establishment. Homeschooling is the enemy of the state in this country. Homeschoolers are actually educated, which is dangerous to any society that relies on keeping it's constituents dumb, which the left and the Democrats need to survive.
Of course, remember, the education establishment in America is also honestly NOT interested in education. Their primary purpose is to spend money and secure teacher jobs (to be paid with MORE government money). In case you didn't know, the amount of money given to all government (public) schools in America depends DIRECTLY upon how many students attend. Therefore, the more students you have at your school, the more money you get. Homeschoolers are the enemy to the state.
Go ahead and elect Democrats and watch them crush this enemy, too.

They've already tried in California. They wanted to require teaching certificates for parents to homeschool.
Texas is very homeschool friendly. Our local park has different groups of homeschool families populating it several times a week. They have groups which allow for what the left likes to use against them; socialization!
IMHO, they are the hope for our future in America.

"Homeschooling is the enemy of the state in this country."
I would say in EVERY country. State school systems have as their first, overriding goal the inculcation of an attitude of submission to the state. Homeschoolers don't get that course in servility, in consequence of which they're psychologically better prepared to resist intrusions on their liberty.
(By the way, why does your comment system's anti-bot filter object to a dot-info domain address?)

Dagney, I'd insist they may be the only hope for America left. Have you seen what is taught in the public schools these days? I HONESTLY cannot tell. I have been talking to high school graduates, and I cannot find ANYTHING they know that the average 8-year old knows. They don't know taxes, percents, fractions, anything about the American Revolution, anything about government, the difference between a verb and an adverb -- seriously.
And Francis, I agree with one qualifier -- every country that's not free. If a country were truly free, this would not be an issue!
As for the dot.info, I don't know, I'll check into that one. Thanks for stopping along!
