Carnival, carnival!
I think I'm going to have to move my weekly carnival notices to Tuesdays or Wednesdays because there's more carnivals now starting to post later in the week.
No matter, I'll post what I've got so far for this week:
Tarheel Tavern #23 is up at
Snort a Sprocket (no, really, that's the name of the blog!)
Harvey's got the
Carnival of Kids (the Bad Uncle Edition).
Basil's Blog has got this week's
New Showcase Carnival. The pickings have been rather slim for this one lately -- folks, if YOU see a blog that you notice is less than 3 months old, let the people know about the
New Blog Showcase, or just submit them yourself with
The Carnival Submission Form. This is a fun Carnival and we really want to keep it going!
There's more carnivals to come, but they'll be posted later in the week!

Duke Power Fixed Payment Plan
Every now and then I get one of these "offers" from utility companies. I wonder, is there anyone who actually takes them up on the "deal?" If so, let me know, as I've got some financial "deals" I'd like to offer you, too.
Here's how it works: Duke Power offers:
No Surprise...No Risk...No Settle Up...No Kidding payment plan... It's called Duke Power's Fixed Payment Plan... only select Duke Power customers may enroll... you get a guaranteed fixed monthly payments ... no matter how cold or hot the weather is outside... your [bill] amount won't fluctuate with the weather.
They go on and on about how wonderful the plan is. Then, way at the bottom, the numbers look something like this:
Your Fixed Payment Plan Monthly Amount: $200.00.
Your Average Amount*: $160.00.
Your Highest Amount*: $250.00.
Your Lowest Amount*: $100.00.
*Amounts were calculated using all available history, up to 24 months at this residence.
So let's see...last year I paid a total of $1,920.00 for electricity, and you're offering me a tremendous, limited time, limited scope deal where I can pay $2,400.00 instead! WOW! What a deal! To avoid paying slightly more in the summer months, I can pay an extra $480, spread out over the whole year! Man am I impressed.
Seriously, does anyone actually sign up for these things? Are people really that stupid or ignorant? Sorry, I forgot.
They are.

They were using tricky words, and fuzzy math! It's not that other people are stupid, it is just not that many people are as smart as you.

So I take you'd pass on the deal, too, Jay, huh?

Sounds great!
Sign up, leave all your lights / TV / Computers / Dryer / Coffee Pot on, leave your AC set to 60 (and run a space heater to get rooms back up to 6

((or, int he winter, set your furnace to 80 and run window AC units to get it back to 6

) ... hell, run extension cords to neighbors' houses and let them drink your power up too!

Is that really how Duke Power works it? Here in Colorado, Xcel Energy offers a plan called Averaged Monthly Payment. Based on your usage history, they even out your payments so you don't pay way more in winter than summer.
But, once a year, they have a "settlement month" where your payments and your actual usage are reconciled. If you used more than you payed, your bill for that month includes the difference that you owe. If you used less, the difference they owe you is credited to your next month's bill.
So the only "excess profit" they make is the interest earned on any extra money collected in the course of the year. Seems fair to me.
You might want to see if Duke has some kind of reconciliation of payments and usage. And if not, helpfully suggest that they copy Xcel's plan. ;-)

GOod idea, TJ!
And Richard, this is all they've got (or at least all they'll make public). That seems like a good idea from Xcel, but doesn't the reconciliation month sort of defeat the purpose of level payments?

We have something like that from our Natural Gas company, it reads a lot like what you have there. I passed on it, but I know people that did it. When I asked them why the answer I recieved was, "We can just barely afford the high heating bills in the winter, especially with Christmas. At least this way we can budget better." All three that did this plan are on a very fixed income.

I don't understand how people can budget to spend more money -- why can't people simply save the money they would have spent in the winter THEMSELVES, instead of paying more to allow someone else to do it?
I should offer my financial services advice to these people...at $200 a day or $500 an hour...

Wow, for a single Ogre, you sure do use a lot of power!
I'd say, "Do it!" and then crank the A/C down to 65 in the summer and the heat to 80 in the winter... and keep the windows open. Oh, TJ beat me to it...

It's tempting -- maybe run the bills WAY up for a year, then get off the plan and hardly use it for awhile...

How far down has our public education system sunk, when people cannot multiply their average utility bill by 12 to produce their annual usage cost-- and a utility company can bank on it?

New Layout
So, how does everyone like the new layout? Oh. Yes, you're right, there was no change in the layout this month. Sorry, it's not coming soon, either.
The next layout I'm working on is relatively complex. I'm experimenting with quite a few features that will work behind the scenes, so don't worry, it won't be a diagonal layout or anything. It will be a pretty different layout, however.
The idea is to have a relatively informative "above the fold" section. From there, there will be links and teasers to articles. I know
Harvey won't like it, at least at first, because it is going to be designed to make you click some, not just scroll. But it should be very user-friendly, unlike the horizontal layout.
I'm setting it up based on cookies and larger screen layouts. If you're one of the 15% viewing with 800x600 monitor settings, sorry, you're not getting the fancy stuff. I'm going to set up an auto-detect that will send small screen viewers to a different layout. I'm also considering having very primitive logins (optional, of course) and a few other features that "remember" your visits.
The big thing that will make a difference will be cookies and computers. I'm wondering how many people visit this site from more than one computer? I can only track cookies on a computer-basis, so if you visit from home and work, the cookies idea won't work, but logins might. So...
How many people visit this site from different computers -- and if so, would you be opposed to a login to remember your readings?

I visit from different computers, but would not necessarily be opposed to logins, assuming my browser remembers my login info so I don't have to keep typing it in. I am lazy, afterall.

It would certainly be a very simplistic logon -- probably without a password -- and you'd only end up typing it once on each machine.
Posted by: Ogre at August 01, 2005 01:32 PM (/k+l4)

I use typically, only one machine... but I delete my cookies pretty frequently. So, I'll have to continually reinput my data. No sweat really. If it's a big pain in the neck, I'll let you know.

This layout is really good. I like how the comments just drop down without opening a new window. No problem with the login idea here.
Posted by: Tomslick at August 01, 2005 02:34 PM (xNjHI)
5
What I'm working on would use the cookies primarily to track which posts are new since your last visit, which ones you've read, and perhaps even which ones you'd commented upon.
Posted by: Ogre at August 01, 2005 02:48 PM (L0IGK)
6
And I'm not sure if the comments are going to stay in place with the new layout, Tomslick. I'm experimenting with some ideas to allow people to log in and have custom options like having comments open in place or not, but I'm not sure that's going to make it to the final version. But since you like it this way, I'll be sure to keep that in mind as it develops.

Jury Nullification
Ever heard of it? Well, you should have. The Agitator writes about it in his weekly Fox column. Jury nullification is well defined by Clay S. Conrad in his book, "Jury Nullification: The Evolution of a Doctrine
" as
"Jurors in criminal trials have the right to refuse to convict if they believe that a conviction would be in some way unjust."
And that's the truth, no matter what the judge or the lawyers say! When the judge tells you, the jury, that you "must" do something, he is outright lying. Why? Because he wants to retain his power! The primary basis of freedom and this country IS based on the idea that the people have the final say. As Mr. Balko says:
(1) Jurors can never be punished for the verdict they return, and (2) Defendants cannot be retried once a jury has found them not guilty, regardless of the jury's reasoning.
In other words, you can quite literally make any decision you want when on a jury, and you CANNOT be punished for it. If you ever get selected for jury service, know this and get informed! Check out the
Fully Informed Jury Association and learn the REAL power of a jury -- but don't let the judge or lawyers know that you know you have power over them -- they won't like it one bit.
Serving on a jury may be the last, great hope for this country. If you are called to serve, serve -- but feel free to ignore the judge as YOU are the one in charge, NOT him.

Very interesting & really valuable to know. There's been a definate down-play to intimidate, there.
Posted by: Mensa B at August 01, 2005 11:40 AM (TOHVc)

Heh. Funny you should say that. We have a situation here in Palm Beach County that just reared its ugly head. A young High School kid skipped school with a girl. He was hauling ass through a neighborhood and wrapped his car around a tree, killing the girl. Seems the girl was a daughter of a cop.
So... it is coming out now, that two people on the jury wanted to vote 'not guilty' as they thought the penalty was too harsh for 'guilty' for such a young man... but someone on the jury said they felt certain that if they did not convict this young man, they all would be harrassed by the cops... for a long time.
It swayed them for a conviction.
Me? That would not have swayed me. I do not make my judgments based on fear like that. I won't be intimidated. But... it happened. A jury who thought they had no control. It will be interesting what will come of it now that it is under the light.
Posted by: Bou at August 01, 2005 12:36 PM (5JHEt)
5
More than a down-play, MensaB, judges often incorrectly tell the jury what they can and cannot do. However, since people generally fear the judge, it continues.
Very interesting, Bou, as in that case, a mistrial can be called. The justice system we have is very, very interesting to me -- a guilty verdict by a jury can be checked, verified, put under a microscope, overturned, etc.; but an innocent verdict cannot.
Posted by: Ogre at August 01, 2005 12:51 PM (/k+l4)
6
The judge is disturbed. It only came out after he received a letter from the juror... I believe after sentencing. Not sure... may have been before. The cops are pissed and I don't blame them. The kid could very well get off because of complete BS in the backroom.
Posted by: Bou at August 01, 2005 02:31 PM (5JHEt)
7
I think the way you've described it, the defense lawyer could request an appeal and a mistrial. Then the whole trial would just be done all over again!

I'll keep your advice in mind if I ever get picked for a jury. I never get that far.

Ban Helicopters!
John Snow (D) has introduced a bill, S247 that would ban helicopters. Well, technically, it would only ban landing pads for helicopters. And, as any good Democrat bill does, it bans landing pads for helicopters where one already exists and has been in existance for many years.
What's so bad about this bill (which is highly likely to pass) is that the Democrats know that they absolutely cannot pass laws regarding airspace in North Carolina -- only the FAA can do that. So instead, they use zoning to regulate the company out of business! Yes, that same zoning thing used in Kelo vs. New London.
I do wonder how they can pass a law that applies retroactively to a business that is already in place. However, this wouldn't be the first time they've passed a law like that -- things like the Constitution are only obstacles to Democrats, not to be taken seriously.

The given reason is because some people complain about sightseeing helicopters that fly over their houses. So, no, lifefights would be OK (as long as they only land where they are told to land, of course!).

"The provisions of this Article shall not apply to any heliport operated by the State of North Carolina, any of its political subdivisions, any law enforcement, fire or rescue agency, or a health care institution licensed by the State to operate an air ambulance."
Oh, I see... as long as the owner of the helicopter is in biz with the NC State Government, they've got two thumbs up. It's only the PRIVATE helo companies NC State Democrats want to send packing to other states to employ the citizens of those OTHER states.
I can see why this torques you off. This is just freaking rediculous!

Posted by: Contagion at August 01, 2005 03:23 PM (Q5WxB)

And you have to have money to fight in court -- and when you sue the state, they have quite literally unlimited funds to drag, delay, and force you to spend lots and lots of money. I don't think the small operators that this is aimed at have anywhere near the cash to fight it.
Posted by: Ogre at August 01, 2005 03:35 PM (L0IGK)

New Neighbor #24
Time once again to introduce a New Neighbor. This week I present for your reading pleasure,
All sorts of interesting stuff over there. Now, I'm not exactly sure how often the site is updated, because the posts have no dates. Instead, it's a riot, because each post for a time/date stamp has something like "Posted by Byron when it was time for the after-dinner nap" or "Posted by Byron during the afternoon snack break." Fun stuff.
The blog is run by one
Byron Harvey. Why is it named "A Ticking Time Blog?" Well, for that answer you'll have to
read the site. However, numerous references on the front page to the "No Kool-Aid Zone" might give you a hint.
There's a nice list of books and videos down the right side, and you know the author of a blog is alright when the FIRST listed "Favorite Flick" is
The Princess Bride. I mean, come on!
His most
recent post is "Christian Hype," which include his first recipient of the first "Hypie" award -- an award given for individuals, groups, or organizations that go overboard in selling something in the name of Christianity -- usually to make a buck.
There's also an excellent fisking of
Bob Stern's Documentary; a nice
blasting of Trent Lott (deservedly so); and yet another example of the FMSM (Formerly MainStream Media)
bias. Good reading all around.
So it's Sunday, and you've got some time on your hands. Why not head over to
A Ticking Time Blog, have a read, and leave a comment or two?

Others just threw up on electric fans.
Madfish Willie lost his pants early, while

Blog Crawl '05

It's time. I think I'm ready:
BlogCrawl 2005 has officially started!
Update 7:40pm EST: See that big bottle in the picture? I'm preparing to crack that baby open. It is Stone Old Guardian: Barley Wine Style Ale. This should be interesting. I've been to 12 blogs on the crawl so far. Cool.
Update 7:49pm EST: Rumor has it that Evil Glennn may
Blogcrawling, too! Eeek!
Update 8:33pm EST: I've stumbled to quite literally every member of the Frizzen Sparks and the Bad Example Family. Whee!
Update 9:22pm EST: Stone Old Guardian is odd (that's the large bottle in the picture). It tastes like a cross between sweet wine and Guiness. It's totally indescribable.

Bedside Table Meme
Ah, carp with a side-order of fries. It seems I've been tagged by Boudicca (a short Celtic woman continually checking her watch outside the restroom) with a silly bedside table meme.
Most of my gentle readers know how I feel about memes. Then again, I am an Ogre, so I pretty much feel the same way about everything else in the world. But I am a truly optimistic Ogre -- no, really! Despite what you might think of what you read here, I almost always see the glass as half full. Anyway, on to the meme:
The first thing you have to do when answering a meme is read the rules in the post in which you were tagged. So, I headed over to
post and looked for the rules -- no rules! Yay! One of the first rules of memes is that when no rules are posted, you may follow your own rules!
It would appear that the meme wants to know what's on my "bedside table." What is this "table" thing of which you speak? I looked up
bedside in the dictionary, and it said, "The side of a bed." So apparently, some people have tables on the side of their bed. Ok, sounds like fun, I'll give it a shot:

I don't know how you people actually get things to stay on your bedside tables...

I guess I should zoom in that picture a little -- it was most recently carrying a huge load of gravel -- so the entire thing, inside and out, is coated with a fine grey dust. If the weather's good tomorrow, I might wax it, but it's supposed to rain...
Posted by: Ogre at July 30, 2005 03:45 PM (L0IGK)
8
EVEN BETTER! If it rains, you won't have to worry, or didn't you read the fine print when you bought a Ford truck? The definition of washing a Ford truck is LITERALLY any time water (any amount of water to be exact) comes in contact with any part of the truck. So, this means if you have a nice cold soda or bottle of water (or whatever) and it starts to sweat in the cup-holder (or on the seat or where-ever) YOU JUST WASHED YOUR TRUCK!
By the way, I stand by my long running statement that you need help. Personally, I have finally admitted (and accepted) that I am WAY BEYOND any help!

People ARE Stupid
As some of my returning readers might remember, I occasionally complain when politicians do something that shows their utter contempt for people, and indicates how stupid they think you are. However, I think I'm learning that they really are right. Perhaps it's time for me to join them as the anointed and simply lord over people because they really are stupid.
According to a
Fox News Poll, Americans really are dumb. The headline was "Bag Searches Yes, Racial Profiling No," but it could have been "People are just idiots."
76% of people believe random searches are "a necessary action" in "today's times."
60% of people believe random searches are effective ways to prevent future terrorist attacks.
Yet there is zero evidence that any random searches have actually done anything at all to prevent, slow down, or modify in any way any crime or terrorist act. In other words, they are completely, 100% for show.
65% of people think that personal safety is more important than liberty.
64% are willing to give up personal freedom to reduce the threat of terrorism
Wow. That's incredibly scary. It says the majority of people in this country are willing to give up quite literally anything for perceived safety. With that attitude, I'm afraid that we're actually moving closer to a civil war -- you see, I'm not giving up my firearms, no matter how safe it makes you feel for me not to have them.
49% of people disapprove of using racial or ethnic profiling in the fight on terrorism.
Sad. That's truly sad. Look, when ALL the terrorists fit an exact profile, why won't we actually look for them?!? It's absolutely assanine NOT to use profiling. If you local police chief took this view on crime-fighting, when a woman reported that she'd been raped by a 6'6" Asian male, they'd have to arrest and question 75-year old ladies and 6-year old kids!
I think America has indeed changed. If this poll accurately reflects the attitudes of Americans today, we are no longer the country that was formed in 1776, and we have no hope of ever being that great country again. This country was founded on individual liberty -- once that's removed, this country is not a representative republic. I think it's time to move to a compound in MT.

The bag searches may not reduce crime, but putting the police in the stations in NYC has reduced crime by a large percentage if the news is correct. I never believe what I read or hear from the former MSM but maybe they didn't lie about this since it is counter to their interest in helping the terrorists.

Blogcrawl 2005
It's here! The first (?) ever blog crawl, brought to you by Miasmatic Review!
What's a blogcrawl? Well, no one is really sure. Therefore, we get to make up our own rules. Actually, Contagion already has those made up, too. And Harvey's got 'em
reposted, just in case. The idea is to drink and post. That's pretty much it. You're supposed to confine yourself to Saturday 7pm to Sunday 7am. And posting and linking in the Bad Example Family and Frizzen Sparks Family is also encouraged. I'm not technically "in" the family, so I'm just going as a house crasher (what else would you expect from an Ogre?).
So come along! Get ready to party! It's also
Tammi's birthday party. Lots and lots of posting and commenting to be had for all! Non-drinkers are also invited. I think I might dress up in my pirate costume, just to set the mood...

Car Wax?
Does anyone ever wax their car?
I was just wondering if I'm the only person still actually buying car wax. If you look at the majority of cars on the road today, the paint processes used to paint the cars seems to be more and more improved, lessening the need for waxing. I should probably just ask
Machelle.
It used to be, many years ago, when I waxed my car, I could see, as I waxed, one side get shinier after waxing, before I got to the second side. That doesn't seem to be the case today -- and the vehicle I'm talking about now is a 2002 model with 50,000 miles on it -- and it's bright red. Now when I wax it, the only way I can even tell is that the water beads up on it.
I wonder if there's any reason left to wax the car, other than being able to spend some time outside while listening to
Cheap Trick

My husband waxes his sports car. He waxed my mini van the other day. I saw a difference when he did it.
For his car, I think it still offers some sort of protection for the paint, although in all honesty, I think his being in the garage, listening to his music, waxing his car is some sort of catharsis. It's not easy being married to me. ;-)

Legislature Pay Raises
This post is for the State Employees of North Carolina, and especially for those State Employees that support and endorse Democrat politicians. This year, 600 workers at the legislature building (state employees) got larger pay raises than other state workers.
How is that possible? Remember those slush funds of Jim Black, Richard Morgan, and Marc Basnight? They "set aside" some tax dollars for "operations" of the building, and then decided to use it for pay raises. Please note, I did not say the pay raises were VOTED upon. Instead, these Democrats used their power to give away tax money to some state workers, but not others.
Jim Black says it was too expensive to give raises to all state workers, so he simply picked out the ones he liked and gave THEM a raise. Keep in mind that the average salary of these workers is $45,000, while the average state employee salary is $38,000. Democrat state employees, I think you need to think again who you want to support in the elections.
And yes, this is the same Legislature that has cut spending "to the bone."

Love is a complicated thing. Think of us and then think harder. The future has little to hold unless we express ourselves the way God intended us to. Imagine a time in which the saddest day becomes no more than a blip on the radar screen of life. The happiest day would dominate; it would crush us with goodness and Jesus. And Jesus would smile grandly - hoping for our well-being, but also hoping that we begin to understand the true meaning of the lord and all he brings us in his wisdom. I love everything!

I read all the posts you put on NC and I can honestly say, I never want to live there. I never had this big pull to live there anyway, but after what I've read about your state politics it is way way way low on my list of places I ever really want to go. Blech.
Which is good for y'all in NC because y'all are suffering from over crowding, I am sure!

But, but...the weather's nice!
No, really, that's the largest draw, I think, to the state-- really good weather. Snowstorms are very seldom, no earthquakes, very few hurricanes (and those that do hit are relatively weak), very few tornadoes, etc., etc. Tons and tons of sunshine without getting too hot; freezing temperature almost never exists.
Also, there's the business bribes. I know quite a few people who have moved here for business, and while the business climate is pretty bad, new businesses will get bribed with HUGE cash piles, and the banks have total control over the legislature, so the huge bank HQs will not move.
That's enough to keep people from leaving in droves -- and the weather.

I see our sister state is following our path nicely here in PA.
Our legislature just voted themselves a hefty raise. Up to 34% for the top dogs.
The public didn't hear much of this at all until after the vote (which was cast at 2 AM).
There are quite a few members that won't even accept the raise and are donating it for scholarships and charity. I guess they must have an election coming up.
Now Pa legislators are second highest paid in the nation.
We also have more legislators than every state except one.
Beat that one Ogre, NC legs are rookies compared to PA.
Posted by: tomslick at July 29, 2005 10:39 AM (xNjHI)
7
Holy crap -- PA legislators get $81,000? NC idiots get in the $20-30K range (plus bribes and slush funds, of course).
I'd bet the one state that has more legislators than you is New Hampshire -- did you know they have 400 representatives in their government? Now THAT'S representative government!
The next competition will be to see which legislature is more corrupt...

Corrupt.
It's not a word to be used lightly. But sometimes, it's the only word that fits, and this is one of those times.
Pennsylvania is the only state in the nation without a law requiring lobbyists to disclose what they're spending and doing to influence our legislators and our governor. The only state.

This just in on the PA legislature pay raise.
THis does sound like Jim Black does it not?
HARRISBURG -- Three Western Pennsylvania House members who voted against a pay raise for state officials are being stripped of their subcommittee chairmanships as punishment by House Minority Leader Bill DeWeese, D-Greene.
Losing the chairmanships will eventually cost Reps. Tom Tangretti, D-Greensburg, Jim Casorio, D-Irwin, and Joe Petrarca, D-Vandergrift, $4,000 in annual salary, according to a letter from DeWeese that became public Thursday.
They were among 15 Democratic pay raise opponents who were removed from vice chairmanships and subcommittee posts, which brought extra stipends on top of the 16 percent pay hike to $81,050 per year the Legislature approved for itself earlier this month.
Pennsylvanians opposed to the pay hike called DeWeese's actions outrageous.
"Obvious retribution being meted out to representatives who voted against the legislative pay grab clearly demonstrates how difficult it is for honorable individuals to serve in government today," said Oren Spiegler, of Upper St. Clair
Posted by: tomslick at July 29, 2005 01:54 PM (xNjHI)
12
Do PA legislators complain repeatedly about how they don't have enough money for "essential services" whilst giving themselves a pay raise?
NC does have some laws regarding lobbyists, but when there are "investigations," they honestly say that there are too many lobbyists who violate the law, so they can't punish them! Seriously -- they have records showing how many lobbyists haven't complied with the law, but there is zero enforcement -- if you don't comply, there's absolutely no punishment of any kind.
And yes, that sounds exactly like Jim Black -- even though the vote passed, because those people didn't vote with him, he punishes them. I wonder if Bill DeWeese's supporters will make the same cry Jim Black's do: "Well, he's not really a good legislator, but he's got seniority, so we're going to elect him."
Is there any hope left for this Representative Republic?
Posted by: Ogre at July 29, 2005 02:03 PM (/k+l4)
13
"Is there any hope left for this Representative Republic?"
I share the sentiments, but YES THERE IS.
I can't say how it will done or when. It seems like a hopeless scenario, but maybe, just maybe if the public would just look and see what is happening around them, then these same reps won't get a free a ride only because of a political affiliation.
I did run across this for PA. Seems like a good start, but I am not overly optimistic of the outcome.
incumbents need not apply...
Operation Clean Sweep is aimed at one simple goal: cleaning house in the Pennsylvania General Assembly by defeating every single incumbent officeholder up for re-election in 2006.
The current members of the General Assembly have slapped taxpayers in the face by awarding themselves a huge pay increase. While some members did vote "no" on the increase, it is common knowledge that all votes were pre-arranged to protect vulnerable seats.
Operation Clean Sweep is not a Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Constitution or Green Party issue. It's us vs. them. The governed vs. the government. The taxpayers vs. the tax spenders.

One more note that I didn't see in the rest of the PA comments - did you know that the folks who voted against the pay raise were penalized?
Nice buncha goons we got up here.
But at least we're not talking about making smoking in one's car illegal - that's Joisey, next door.

Yes, tomSlick mentioned that one, Birdwoman -- that's exactly how things work here in North Carolina -- agree with the king, or pay.
And Jersey is very quickly becoming the California of the East.

Pennsylvania Activist Sues Over Lawmakers' Pay Raise
The Associated Press
Published: Aug 1, 2005
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - An activist filed a lawsuit Monday contesting a pay raise lawmakers approved for themselves last month, saying the state constitution prohibits the legislature from increasing its own members' pay.
The bill increased legislators' base pay from $69,647 to $81,050 and gives a bonus to the scores of lawmakers who hold committee posts. It also raised the salaries of Gov. Ed Rendell, senior executive branch appointees, judges, row officers and prosecutors.
Activist Gene Stilp filed the lawsuit in Commonwealth Court, naming Rendell and Treasurer Robert P. Casey Jr., who are both Democrats, and House Speaker John M. Perzel and the Senate President Pro Tempore Robert C. Jubelirer, both Republicans.
Last month, 15 Democrats who voted against the pay raise were demoted from their committee posts and were replaced with colleagues who voted for it.
Ok, This is getting interesting. The judges got a pay raise from this vote and will be deciding the case. No conflict of interest here. I wonder what the Vegas odds are on this one?

Excellent point -- if all parties without a financial interest in the case recuse themselves, there's no one left to judge -- except federal judges...

Kit Jarrell of Euphoric Reality has completed Part 7 of the explosive series, "Brother Against Brother."
This is an incredible story about heroism and teamwork in the hostile jungles of Vietnam. If you haven't read any of this story yet, start with

ACLU and Muslims
I know many of my good readers still believe in the ACLU. They believe the stories that the ACLU tells, and the claims that the ACLU actually believes in civil rights. I'm here to tell you, the ACLU wouldn't know civil rights if they hit them upside the head with a 2x4.
This month, the NC ACLU is suing North Carolina. Why? Primarily for money (despite what the
press reports currently
read). In this case, they are suing to put the Quran in courtroom for people to pray over, or swear upon. Keep in mind this is the same organization that wants to suppress any and all prayer or signs of religion,
if that religion is Christianity.
Currently, NC state laws allows terrorists and other muslims the option to
They may lay their hand on the Bible.
* They may raise a hand if their faith does not allow them to swear on the Bible.
* They may affirm that their testimony is truthful if they have no religious faith.
In other words, they are already completely free to NOT swear on the Bible if they do not want to. In this case, the ACLU and the terrorists (and other muslims) want to force their religion on the citizens of North Carolina. Similar to the various "civil right" battles fought by gays, this is not about equal rights, it is about forcing their views on others.
Patrick
said it best a few days ago:
In fact, the medieval doctrine enshrined in the Islamic hate manual—which is still interpreted literally by Muslims—is completely hostile to the rights and laws that our courts are charged with protecting and upholding. Whether or not you believe in the Bible’s spiritual components is, in a court of law, not as important as whether you believe in the democratic principles its moral teachings helped to forge. And Muslims do not believe in those principles.
Did you read that last sentence? Muslims do NOT believe in our government principles. Their "holy book" instructs them to KILL the people in our government. There is absolutely NO reason to allow a book, or a religion, into the courtroom that is actively opposed to the court room and the very system of government of the courtroom!
The mulsim religion has NO place in North Carolina's courtrooms. This is NOT about acceptance, diversity, or tolerance -- it is about destroying the uniquely American way of life and the American government system from within. That is the ACLU's mission today.

Sounds to me like your American moonbats are as duplicitious as our Canadian ones. It's like have sets of rules for different groups, rules that they feel they can shift and change however they wish. It's funny how they bend over backwards to make the point that all religions and cultures are equal, yet they spend their time slagging christians, while ignoring the violent and dark nature of the Qur'an.

Someone NEEDS to kick that leg out from under them. That's another reason to support the Public Expression of Religion Act (http://capwiz.com/legion/issues/alert/?alertid=7671891&type=CU), which would take the ACLU off the taxpayer dole -- right now they are heavily funded by TAXPAYERS.
And yes, Debris Trail, according to the ACLU, all religions are equal, just some are more equal than others...

No Free Speech Zone
In case you are a bit uninformed, I'd like to make a correction to "commonly accepted thought" in today's society. When asked where people have the most intellectual freedom, quite often the answer would be in higher education. While that may have once been the case (especially in the radical 60s & 70s), it is most certainly NOT a place that welcomes freedom today.
As
Wendy McElroy, points out in her weekly
editorial, freedom of speech on today's campuses of "higher learning" is only protected for some, while it is utter bashed and destroyed for others.
At issue here are the words uttered in an unsolicited email -- in other words, Person A sent a mass email to Person B. In the email, there was a specific link to click to reply to the sender. Person B followed that link and replied:
Do not send me any mail about 'Connie and Sally' and 'Adam and Steve.' These are perversions. The absence of God in higher education brings on confusion. That is why in these classes the Creator of the heavens and the earth is never mentioned.
That's it. There was zero other communications of any sort between Person A and Person B. Nada, nothing, zilch. The response of person B?
"I don't want to feel threatened at my place of work"
The result? Not what logic would dictate, a boot to the head of Person A, but instead, a
letter of reprimand to Person B!
So yes, in today's version of academic, you are free to insult people if you insult them and their intelligence in the name of lesbianism, but if you DARE to actually be offended by lesbianism, or even have the apparent unmitigated GALL to actually request to NOT receive email about lesbians, YOU ARE SEXUALLY HARASSING AND THREATENING PEOPLE!
This is utterly insane! I am NOT exaggerating this -- the Person B is accused of making a hostile workplace FOR ASKING NOT TO RECEIVE EMAILS ABOUT LESBIANS!
It gets worse.
This complete and total twisting of sanity is completely
supported by the Attorney General of New Jersey.
It's hard to believe there's anything that can be done to save this country at times like this. Oh, and if you're offended by this, I'm telling the thought police when they come to pick me up for writing this.

Isn't that the truth.
I personally was amazed how they pushed the term "homophobic".
In other words, you have no right to be disgusted, there must be something wrong with you.
Phobia - abnormal, persistent fear.
Now remember this next time you almost step in a pile of dogshit. That does not disgust you, you are afraid of it.
Typically I catch hell with my dogshit and homo analogy, but what the hell.

The left's idea of free speech is the right to advocate leftism. Leftists protect leftists, and will stop at nothing to destroy non-leftists.
The entire world is moving towards totalitarianism. In communist (leftiest) countries like China or Cuba, you'll be thrown in prison or killed for speaking out against "the party". Here in America, you'll be scorned and humiliated for speaking out against leftism. Don't think for a minute they wouldn't throw you in prison for life for thought crimes if the left gained total control of the government here.

Thanks for all your comments, folks.
To answer birdwoman, according to the Attorney General of New Jersey, use of the word "perversion" is verbotten. Apparently, in New Jersey, if you use that word, you can be severely punished according to his interpretation of the "State of New Jersey Policy Prohibiting Harassment or Hostile Environments in the Workplace."
Seriously. The actual Attorney General of New Jersey IS enforcing speech codes. Watch what you say while in that state, or YOU MAY BE PUNISHED FOR SAYING "PERVERSION!"

John Edwards on Tour
Anyone remember John Edwards? He bought a seat in the US Senate for a few years, and even showed up to vote once or twice. He was also a vice-presidential candidate for a little while. After he lost that election, he was rewarded by the University system of North Carolina with a chair of some sort. Well, he's back in the news, annoying Democrats again.
This time, he's touring AZ, NM, MI, and OH to promote raising the minimum wage in those states. Why him? No one knows. Why those states? Check them again. It's starting to appear that he wants to be Hillary's running mate in '08. After all, he brought so much to the ticket in '04, why not?
What's even funnier about his trips is that the North Carolina Legislature Democrats are mad. Did you know Edwards was from North Carolina? He is, but he's not been campaigning in North Carolina for their minimum wage increase!

John Roberts vs. The Left
Once again, The Alliance has a question. This week they're wondering
How will the left attack Supreme Court nominee John Roberts?
With all due respect to
Harvey and
GEBIV, I think they've asked the wrong question. If I were to actually list every way that the left will attack Mr. Roberts, I'd write enough to fill the entire internet. Instead, a question that can be answered much more succinctly and more accurately, without a
calumny, is:
How will the left NOT attack Supreme Court nominee John Roberts?
To answer that question is rather simple:
The left will NOT use the United States Constitution to attack Mr. Roberts (mainly because they've never read it).
The left will NOT use logic to attack Mr. Roberts (mainly because they don't understand the concept).
The left will also NOT use anything remotely related to reality to attack Mr. Roberts (mainly because they seem to completely avoid it at all times).

The Center for Purposeful Living
I was sent another story from a former student at the Center for Purposeful Living, aka University for Human Goodness. This is a group in North Carolina that spends a lot of time insisting that it is not a cult:
Is CPL a cult? The reader can make his or her own decision. For those who are convinced that CPL is a cult, nothing written here will matter. For others, let them consider that, yes, it is unusual for a group of people to come together, with long-term commitments, be focused on a specific work, create a community based on common values, and then try to transfer to students a “teaching”—all without looking like a cult at first glance. These things do exist at CPL. Yet, there are significant differences from cults.
Well, as they say on their own site, you can make your own decision. If you're researching that group, I would suggest reading
the words of someone who's been there. Personally, I've not had any direct contact with anyone associated with that group -- I'm just pointing out the information so people can make an informed decision.

I have a friend who was involved in it for a little while - I bragged that she was so wonderful that she went to the University for Human Goodness. You have to admit it is a good line.
But she felt that there was something not quite right with it and left. I got the feeling that she thought that the only people who were getting the benefit of her labor were the people in charge...And she is a very, very generous and hard-working lass...But she didn't speak of it much.
