Yes, I am a conservative, but...
I happened to look at PP with IE, and for some reason the whole blog has shifted to the right. (It looks fine in Mozilla, of course!) Anybody know what I accidently did to cause this?

It looks like your sidebar is centered and your body is tacked to the right of it. Not your physical body (with the curvies and boobies and such) but the body of your site. I mean really, who tacks up bodies any more?
Posted by: Jim @ at March 11, 2004 01:43 PM

I take that back. It's not just your sidebar that's centered. It starts at your title.
Posted by: Jim @ at March 11, 2004 01:44 PM

But Jim! How do I fix it? I honestly haven't done anything to mess with my template or CSS except add a link to the blogroll! Do you think if I add and /center to the end of the banner it might straighten out?
Posted by: Susie @ at March 11, 2004 07:17 PM
5
Ok, I tried putting /center after the banner, and I tried taking out the link I added just before everything went cattywhompus, but neither fixed it. As I said, it looks fine in Mozilla, but unfortunately many folks haven't upgraded to the superior browser yet, and I don't want my readers with IE getting tired of having to scroll right to read the posts...

Hey, I didn't even see the help wanted sign, I just happened by and was postin' a comment and noticed all the comments in the box were centered. I knew Susie forgot to close off a center tag in the foregoin' post, and just casually mentioned such. 'Twarn't nuthin', Ma'am. *tips hat and smiles*

Switching my blog around
Does anyone know an easy way to move my menu bar to the right. As of now I have my menu bar on the left, and my content on the right. I want to try it opposite, but without changing any other stuff.
What would be the easy way to do it?

Take a look at this and let me know if you think it's a good idea. In particular, have a play around in here. You've each got your own room, so no fighting!
I'm planning on restyling it to look like
this and then merging the two and using it to replace
this which is hopelessly out of date.
The alternative is to work on Minx until it does everything that Movable Type and PHP-Nuke do, only better, and then use it, but that will probably be six months or more. (Minx just for blogging should come sooner than that.)
Let me know what you think.

Rob, since you were our guinea pig and thus the first regular-type account on the new MuNu server, people land on your page if I manage to screw things up somehow.
I'll change that at some point so that any mu.nu domain that's not otherwise catered for ends up at the main mu.nu site. Only right now the main mu.nu site is 18 months out of date.

Now what
You know when you go buy something from IKEA and you get home and say I can do this because it looks easy and the instructions are so simple but it turns out they're not so simple because the screw that goes into that other bit doesn't fit and you need to drill the wall but you don't have the right bits either and now it's all out of the packaging and spread out over the floor and you don't know what goes where and you've wasted your entire afternoon?
Cpanel is a little like that.
There's a question coming: I've set up a subdomain in Cpanel. For example let's say I've called it aboutme.simonworld.mu.nu. So how do I now put content onto it??? Format it? Do anything to it?
I actually managed to fit the IKEA mirror on the wall in the end.

Subdomains don't work right now because of the way I have MuNu's DNS set up. Well, they work for some people, but not others.
I will fix this in the next couple of days.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at March 02, 2004 03:57 AM
3
As for the other questions: If you create a subdomain of wombat.simonworld.mu.nu, CPanel will create a subdirectory called wombat under your main web directory. Anything you put there will appear (once I get things fixed) at wombat.simonworld.mu.nu. (And also at simonworld.mu.nu/wombat.)
You can use ftp (use your CPanel login/password) to put files there.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at March 02, 2004 04:02 AM
4
What exactly is CPanel anyway?
And, can I use the FTP to upload mp3s yet? Just askin'...

Pixy that's great but what does it mean to FTP to the new site. What if I want to put (effectively) another blog page on the simonworld.mu.nu/wombat site? Do I need to load up MT or something? That's where I'm confused - how to get content onto the site once it's created.

Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at March 02, 2004 03:48 PM

Don't use the phengometer, that is antique. Use six flux capacitors in series with the ithecon hypbrid resonator. But verify the units operation first before install the unit into the interocitor. If you fail to do this the entire unit will work iradically and exitor will not be on the screen , but instead the borg will track down your signal. I know, I am part of the colective due to making this mistake. The buzz word is "phase locked loop". With out it Dr. Morbius will use the wifi into the Robie the robbot rotating soap bubble spoon on the side of his head and it does rotate, sweeping the entire universe for extraneous signals. SO what ever you do check the unit independently before installing, contact ryberg electronic, Genuine replacement parts division.

TECH HELP
My mom is extremely concerned that she can't view my blog properly. The sidebar is pushed all the way down to the bottom. She has a small monitor, but since I set up my blog in terms of % of the screen instead of pixels, that shouldn't have an effect, right? Does anyone know why this might be or how we could fix it? She keeps calling and writing telling me that it's all messed up

Hmm, at a lower screen resolution that 1024 x 768 your side bar does take a dive under the rest of your content.
Whilst you are corret that you have your dimensiona defined in %s the problem is with the image of you in the tank. You could try to salvage more space for the side bar by adjusting the width of #content or by fixing the width of .side to say 270px.
Failing that you'd need to implement a new deign which doesn't have your side bar floated left (or of course you could just shrink the image!)
Posted by: Rob @ at March 01, 2004 04:11 PM

Ah, the good old bottombar problem.
If the sidebar is too narrow for your photo, the whole sidebar from the photo down runs off and hides down the bottom of the screen. If your try shrinking your browser window, you can see this yourself.
Someone solved the problem, but I don't remember who or how. (I ended up hardcoding the widths of my sidebars.)
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at March 01, 2004 04:12 PM

Your sidebar looks fine to me, so it could be that your mom is using an older version of her browser. F'rinstance: my blog looks all fine and proper in IE 6.0, but Netscape 4.0 jumbles everything up. When I upgraded my IE ffrom 4.0 to 6.0 it solved a lot of problems that I was having viewing some sites.

Overflow:hidden would work but may lead to some interesting clipping issues. I still maintain you fix the side bar width to just above the width of the tank image

Forgot to mention the clipping issues with overflow:hidden... Thanks Rob
Might you also use absolute positioning to keep the column in place. This method would gove you a bottom scroll bar if you had content too wide in the sidebar and I'm sure there is something else I'm forgetting.

Wups, There It Goes
The Symphony was taking its time posting, probably because of all the links. Due to the hideous way trackback autodiscovery works (it first has to read all the pages you've linked to, to see if they're pingable) it didn't seem to be actually doing anything.
Anyway, 15 pings away... Let's see how many work.
Damn, I screwed up the images!
Still pinging.
I can update this post
again and it will still be pinging.

Pizza Dough Recipe
I love to bake. I make bread and pizza dough all the time. I wanted to share with you all my recipe for pizza dough.
First, you need a stand mixer. I have a 5 quart Kitchen-Aid, but any stand mixer with a dough hook will do.
Also, you should use Unbleached Bread Flour. Bread flour works best because of the high protein content leads to good gluten to give the dough it's trademark chewey texture like good pizza has.
1 1/8 cup hot water
1 T sugar
1 T Honey
1 1/2 T dry yeast
1 T Extra Virgin Olive Oil
3 C Flour
1 t salt
Combine water, sugar, honey, and yeast in bowl, and mix with fork for 10 seconds. Let stand 10 minutes till it starts to foam (yeast starting to work).
Add 1 cup of flour and beat with the flat mixer for 1 minute. Add the rest of the flour 1/2 cup at a time, beating for 30 seconds before adding more flour. Add Olive Oil and salt when you add the last of the flour.
Beat with the dough hook for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes pick a piece of the flour off and stretch to see if it stretches thin enough to see through. This is called a baker's pane, and is a good indication you have worked the gluten enough.
Let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled. Punch down, and let rise another 30 minutes.
Use the dough for pizza, flatbread, stomboli, calzones, or whatever need you see fit. You can freeze the extra dough, but be sure to bring to room temperature before you use again.
Enjoy!!

Mmm, bread.
I love my bread maker. Chuck ingredients in bowl, do something else for three-four hours, eat bread.
Perfect!

That's how I started, but I learned that making it in a mixer and shaping it by hand is more fun, and better in some ways. My bread maker makes really square, tall loaves, not really good for sandwiches, but it does make good bread.

well, i was just looking for a pizza dough recipe. And they all seem to have the same general format except for a few variations... for example: some used all honey and no sugar, some all sugar, some had milk, corn meal, etc... So my question is what difference do these all make?

I could use some help...
Dear Munivianans,
I've been working on setting up my new mu.nu site for six hours now, and I've hit a gumption trap. I could really use some tech help at this point. Check out my blog at tryingtogrok.mu.nu to visualize my problem.
I'd like to get the sidebar to be a little thinner, but I certainly can't figure out how to do that. I'd like it if the dotted line were right up next to the photo of me so that there isn't so much wasted white space. Does anyone know how to do that?
I'd also like to archive by topic, which I see some have done. I'm sure it's something really easy, but I'm too burned out at this point to figure it out myself.
I'm almost there...
Sarah
UPDATE:
Thanks for the tips, everyone. I think I've got it figured out. Come Monday I'll officially be moving over...

Sarah, I'm sure some fine help is on the way. My normal method is 'guess and by golly'. Lots of frustration and the occasional "eureka!" moment.
If you look under the... hmmmm... the category list on Munuviana is missing. There's been a bunch of good tech posts here under that category.
Mr. Pixy, Sir?

Let me take a little look...
Hmm. In your stylesheet, under #content, it specifies that the content part takes up 65% of the width of the page. You can try increasing that a bit. Of you can try setting a fixed width for your sidebar, only I don't remember exactly how to do that.
Hang on, I did it for my blog!
Try putting
width:280px;
under the #links section, and take the width: 65% out of the content section. That should either fix it or destroy it completely.

Sarah, just turn on "category" archives, and make sure you remember to assign each post a category when you write it.

Stephen - it shouldn't be possible to cause any serious problems with CPanel or Fantastico, no matter what you do.

If there's one guiding nike shoes principle to writing good articles, this is it, and it isn't as easy as it nike tailwind sounds. The temptation to turn article writing into a numbers game is tantalizing and seductive. Most of us fall mens air max 2010 for it, especially when we're just starting out. There's also an element of competition involved. For example, many online marketing forums will have multiple threads at any given time with members bragging about how many 2010 womens nike air max articles they can write in a day.Your RSS feed will be posted to more air max shoes blogs.

I get the redirect pages under Horde and SquirrelMail, but not Neomail. (I think. Hang on... Yes.)
It's a stupid problem that CPanel users have complained about for a while.
Horde shows "Inbox 0" - but when I click on Inbox, there's my message.
In Horde, you can log out and then log back in to view a different email address.
If you log out of NeoMail, it logs you right out of CPanel, which is really dumb.
If you log out of SquirrelMail, and log back in, it automatically gives you your default mailbox with no option to change it, which is really dumb.
I'll see if there's something I can do to fix that.

PHP List
Anybody know how the heck to get PHP List out of "Test" mode so I can actually test it? It won't send email whilst in test mode and I've no idea how to get to the config file and there's no option in the GUI menu to take it out of cannibalized mode.

Haven't tried it. In fact, I haven't tried most of the stuff in Fantastico.
In fact, they keep adding new stuff to Fantastico faster than I can play with it.
If you just want a simple mailing list, check in CPanel under Mail -> Mailing Lists. That uses Mailman, which should be all configured and working already.
