Play Around
Just to open it up to everyone, I set up a wordpress blog on my site at http://dfmoore.mu.nu/play/. If you want to play around with a php-based blog to learn some of the basics for it (in prep if we do actually switch), just click on the "register" button on the sidebar and register. It may take some time, but I will then get around to bumping everyone's access up to the max allowed.
Jen says "It's like blog-city" but I think that it may have some significant differences (though I wouldn't really know, having never used blog-city).

Odd things sometimes happen
This is not the very first time this has occurred, but it has been a while since my last memory, but every once in awhile, all the Internet Explorer windows just close down all by themselves. It just occurred. I was readin' a blog and viola, that window, as well as the 20-odd other windows I had open just spontaneously closed. I have never seen them close that fast if I attempt to get them all to close by usin' the close group command. Any one of ya'll experienced geeks got an answer to this dilemma for a geek/0™ like me?

Llamabutchers need help!
Howdy! I'm not a complete idiot---I know quite a bit about HTML and have been using it for six years now, but for some odd reason I'm having a bear of a time getting the formatting straight for the new site. Specifically, I tried inputting one of the standard MT template formats, but it came out looking all bolluxed. I would appreciate any insight from someone as I'd like to get the new place up and looking somewhat presentable (We can't spend another day on %$^&*#(!! Blogger without going nuts!) llamabutchers@yahoo.com
Thanks in advance,
Steve the Llamabutcher

Was it a template or a style sheet? In Movable Type (unlike Blogger) they're separate.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at May 18, 2004 08:24 AM

Pixy--The problem is somewhere in the style sheet.
What I'm having trouble with is visualizing how the basic page layout is constructed in MT (I have always thought of it in terms of a giant table). I've got the div id=banner , content, and links idea, but am having trouble with how to place them. Margin, border, and padding make sense, as well as the color, font, font size et all. It's just this "how do you get the link column flush to the right and the top" that's bedeviling me at the moment.
Thanks for help with what I am sure are embarassingly simple questions.

One thing I just discovered is that the MT web site now only has MT 3.0 templates and style sheets - and they may not be compatible with 2.64

Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at May 19, 2004 07:50 AM

I haven't looked at them yet, but did MT rename their "bloggy bits" to where the CSS wouldn't work? If so, surely we could take a new CSS and rework it to fit our current version of MT. I'll have a look at it later today and start working on it if anyone is interested.
I have copies of all the old templates except Category and Monthly archives. I trashed mine so many times, it was easier to keep a copy locally to.
Did anyone make copies of the old stylesheets? If so, it might be nice to post them here all in one place and put up a link in the sidebar.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 19, 2004 02:59 PM

It's easy to get the templates, because they're included with the standard install. Create a new empty blog and viola!
I have two of the stylesheets (three counting "Plain Jane") on blogs I've been too lazy to change, so I can make those available.

Trickle Trackbacks?
I don't know if this a site problem, a group blog problem, or a trickle problem...
It seems that if I do some linking in a post set for deferred posting via Trickle, it doesn't send out pings to the posts I linked in my post. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Or am I just crazy????
Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this subject.

I had a similar problem in that MT wouldn't send pings if links are in the extended entry. There are some answers at the MT forums on the extended entry problem. For trickle I imagine due to the nature of the plug in you have to tell it what to ping in the box on the New Entry page when you save it as a draft.

Introductions?
Can I make a suggestion/request/plea?
Since so many people are joining the fabulous ranks of Munuviana, can we ask that each new person introduce themselves and what their blog is sort of about on this page? I mean, I was without internet connection for nearly 2 months, and I think our ranks have doubled in the meantime. So if a new person joined, we could get to learn a bit about them and know if that's the type of blog we like or not (since all of us are so very different.)
You know-the new person could say: "Hi, I'm Uncle Bob. My blog is a rant against naugahyde and I like to spend my time abusing sales people and doing target practice with my air rifle on street signs" then we wold know about the strange and screwed-up Uncle Bob, and know if we wanted to visit their site or not.
Just an idea.

My name is Rob and my Blog (XSet) is a personal journal which spends an awful lot of time being techy and incomprehensible. I don't do news or politics but always have a pot of coffee on the go if you fancy dropping by.

FrEEbies
pMachine, the people behind pMachine and Expression Engine, are now offering free copies of Expression Engine to the first 1000 people who contact them!
You don't need to inundate them, as I've already applied, but the more technical Munuvians might be interested in snagging their own free copy to play with.
If we
do end up going to Expression Engine, I'll be buying a full license, but since my 30-day trial timed out, this is a great chance to play with EE some more.
Update: Got it! I'll install it somewhere where people can play with it.

Why do we have to change? I thought things were working fine the way they are.
Posted by: Mr Mouse @ at May 17, 2004 05:37 PM

Jennifer:
1) I do not consider or promote myself as being a "coding genius" (that would be Rob and Pixy) and neither should you. I only try to share what little I have learned as a way to pay forward the generosity of our esteemed host.
2) Lighten up. That was meant as a joke.
3) I have an above average understanding of certain things - things that I am interested in. I would guess that you make time to learn new things everyday. Something new about whatever you are interested in. Some things you naturally have to learn more about or be left in the dust of the technology revolution, eg a new cell phone from a different vendor, a new cordless phone, a new answering machine, a new remore control device, etc
4) I'm sure any learning curve on a new blogging system would not be too steep. You already have a frame of reference from BlogSpot and/or MT. Stylesheets won't be functionally changed. Maybe the bits and pieces of the blog will have a different name or be located in a different place, but it will all work in a similar fashion. It won't be like learning AutoCad or anything like that.
5) What about learning a new system when Minx comes out? Or will you quit blogging because you have to learn something new?
6) What about the learning curve in new music format. From perforated metal disks to 78/33/45rpm vinyl to cassette tape to metal-coated plastic CD/DVD to MP3 players. There is a learning curve with each new upgrade that everybody seems to be able to make without too much difficulty or hand-wringing or committing acts of hari-kari.
7) Sorry I blew up!
Daniel: Sorry if you took that the wrong way. Like I tried to explain to Jennifer, it was a supposed to be joke. Since you were an MT beta tester, I assumed that you would "get" my apparantly feeble attempt at humor. My most humble apologies, sir.
As an aside, I really do have original Microsoft Windows 2.0 on 5.25" diskettes. I don't what hoping for in keeping them, but maybe they'll be worth something to someone somewhere. I'll keep telling myself that anyway.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 17, 2004 07:30 PM

If you took my comment as not being "light" you would do well to remember the rest of us have problems "reading" attitudes, too.
My comment follows an experiment with TextPattern--I don't consider myself particularly stupid, but I couldn't make head or tails of it. A setup like MT would be fine for me, as I assume Minx will be. But, yes, if we were to move to something completely different from MT I would quit or find another home.

I bought a fully-licensed version of the pMachine program. I used it for a while, but I was more comfortable with the MT-interface. (I've also donated over $50 in the past year.)
pMachine, WordPress and MT all have their strong points and their not-so-strong points but with any one of them there is a learning curve. I would hope no one would jump from this fine group of folks based on that premise alone.
I hereby offer my services in any way you need them -- I'm here to help. If I don't know the answer, I'll find it.
Love,
Em

Purple Paint Splatter
I been tweaking around with some designs... here's the latest design from the files of MadLab. This one is a lot more subdued than my regular, shall we say bold use of colors and textures. It still has some nice colors and an interesting background image. You be the judge!
It's not in my skin rotation yet, as there is a column sizing boggle going from one skin to the next that I haven't been able to conquer... yet!! Check out the
Pretty Blue Flowers skin to see what I'm talking about. The left column will be full width the first time, then when you switch out and switch back, the left margin is correct at 200px but the right margin is way whoppy-jawed. I guess I need a better style-switcher that flushes the CSS cache so they don't inherit properties from one skin to the next.
Anyway... there is a big thumbnail in the extended entry that clicks out to a 1280x1024 full image.

Well, it is possible, but you'd have to know some database programming, knowledge of the database and tables and field names, and have access to the tables to retreive the information. But I'm sure that's not the answer you were looking for. Just thought I'd muddy the waters a little. D'oh!

Actually, considering I was a data analyst/data manager for years, I think I know a fair amount about databases. Occasionally, like the listing of all posts available for edit, there is an easier solution. For my needs, what Jim said was perfect. I really didn't need to see all of them...just past the last 5.

MuNuby Help - Pullquotes
From Susie, from SilverBlue, from KiwiFruit, from Mandarin Design
Pullquotes...

I set mine up in my stylesheet. See the extended entry for the code I used. I have included the code for a left float pullquote and a right float pullquote.

Ok, you know how ungeekly I am--where in the CSS does the script go, and do I have to type that span class list in every post I want floating text?
Posted by: Susie @ at May 13, 2004 08:16 PM
3
You can put the code anywhere you want in your stylesheet.
You have to assign the span class everytime you want to use the code. If you take a real close look at what you did in your post today and compare it to what I did in my post, you'll see that mine is the easier way to duplicate... much less actual code to remember and type in. If you only want to assign one color or class to the entire pullquote, then the whole process is shortened. I just tried to re-create what everyone was posting for their test samples.
You can also modify and/or use the color codes in any other part of your post. You only have to surround the desired text in the span tags and assign the span tag a class code. I have several that I use occasionally at MFW so I don't have to type in all the font tags individually.
Sample from MFW CSS:
.grn {
color:#008000;
font-weight:bold;
}
.mrn {
color:#800000;
font-weight:bold;
}
.blu {
color:#0000FF;
font-weight:bold;
}
.blue {
color:#000067;
font-weight:bold;
}
.ind {
color:#4B0082;
font-weight:bold;
}
Then, when I want to use maroon text, I just do this:
<span class="mrn">Selected text for color</span>
I've counted the keystrokes and the CSS code is shorter, plus you don't have to memorize a bunch of color codes, just the class name.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 13, 2004 08:29 PM
4
Plus, if you ever want to change the code for a different look or color, you will have a blog-wide change, which is the point of CSS in the forst place.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 13, 2004 08:32 PM
5
I've added a top and bottom border on the sample over at MadLab. I think think they help set the pullquotes off a bit better.

Ok, two questions--if I want it on the left, do I put Lt where the Rt is? And is it supposed to NOT show up in preview as colored text? Or did I do something wrong in the CSS?
Posted by: Susie @ at May 14, 2004 03:16 AM
8
In a word... yes. To display a left floating pullquote, use the .pullquoteLt class. I have posted an image in an update to the post showing what the preview will look like in Mozilla.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 14, 2004 03:30 AM
9
In .pullquoteLt change margin-left:10px; to margin-right:10px;
That will move the text to the left margin and give you some spacing on the right side of your text block.

Chiming In
Hi. My name is Harvey. I run Bad Example. Susie of Practical Penumbra told me that it's traditional for new MuNuvians to make a post here.
First, I just want to thank
Pixy for having me, and I really enjoy having a spiffy new blog with working features and short load times.
Second, I have a confession to make... I hate blogging
I never really wanted to a blogger in the first place...
I wanted to be...
A LUMBERJACK!
(piano vamp)
Leaping from tree to tree! As they float down the mighty rivers of
British Columbia! With my best girl by my side!
The Larch!
The Pine!
The Giant Redwood tree!
The Sequoia!
The Little Whopping Rule Tree!
We'd sing! Sing! Sing!
Oh, I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay,
I sleep all night and I work all day.
CHORUS: He's a lumberjack, and he's okay,
He sleeps all night and he works all day.
I cut down trees, I eat my lunch,
I go to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin'
And have buttered scones for tea.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch,
He goes to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays 'e goes shoppin'
And has buttered scones for tea.
CHORUS
I cut down trees, I skip and jump,
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing,
And hang around in bars.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps,
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women's clothing
And hangs around.... In bars???????
CHORUS
I chop down trees, I wear high heels,
Suspendies and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie
Just like my dear papa.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he wears high heels
Suspendies?? and a .... a Bra????
(spoken, raggedly) What's this? Wants to be a *girlie*? Oh, My!
And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!
CHORUS
All: He's a lumberjack, and he's okaaaaaaayyy..... (BONG)
Sound Cue: The Liberty Bell March, by John Phillip Sousa.
-or-
===============================================================================
Dear Sir,
I wish to complain on the strongest possible terms about the previous
entry in this file about the lumberjack who wears womens' clothes. Some of
my best friends are lumberjacks, and only a FEW of them are transvestites.
Yours faithfully,
Brigadier Sir Charles Arthur Strong, Mrs.
P.S. I have never kissed the editor of the
Radio Times.

MadLab Purple
If anyone would really like a purple color scheme for their blog, I have a couple of samples over the the MadLab. Use the styleswitcher at the top of the right sidebar to view the purple skins.
Purple A is just the default CSS with a purple color scheme instead of blue.
Purple B is a solid purple background with very defined post and date divisions.
Purple C is very similar to Purple B with different borders for post entries and sidetitles.
These aren't very subtle designs... but anyone is more than welcome to use them. Actually, a nice subtle background image from
Absolute Background Texture Archives would really tone it down. They have sections for a range of different colors. They also have a section for designing your own banner with different text effects.
Just grab the CSS link off the source code, paste it into your address bar, press go, and the the CSS will display in your browser window. Or feel free to grab the CSS and change the
color scheme up.
Please don't grab the default template - someone already has spoken for it.
UPDATE: I put some backgrounds in the templates to tone them down. I think you'll like them more now. If you grab one of these templates, don;t gorget to grab the background image to. Then, upload the image, change the filepointers (2) in the CSS, save and rebuild.
UPUPDATE: Actually all the purple templates have been reworked and look much better now. And only the front pages are coded. The backpages still have the formatting from the main template... just soi you know.

Mail/Image Hosting
Do we each have a mu.nu mail address?
If so, how would we access that address?
I remember when I first came here I was able to call up some big menu with all these different functions (none of which I comprehended), and now I can't find that again.
Is there a place we can upload images so that I'm not always leeching bandwidth off other blogs for my cowbell gifs?

You just save images to your computer then upload them using the MT console. It is the third button down on the editing menu on the left side of the console.
The other thing is called cPanel. It is tricky. I have it bookmarked and keep my access info in a file, just in case the computer cookie loses it.
Posted by: Mr Mouse @ at May 11, 2004 04:43 AM
2
We also have the ability to set up e-mail through the MuNu account. You'll need to access that through CPanel.
Open cPanel, click on Mail then Add/Remove accounts. Add your account (ace@ace.mu.nu or whatever you want) and then you're done.
In your mail program, your servers would be mail.ace.mu.nu (for both the SMTP and POP server).
If I can help in any other way, you know where I am.

Thanks, but...
...okay, I see how to upload a picture. But once uploaded, what is its URL? I mean, okay, I can upload something, but where is it stored so that I can use that URL instead of the URL I'm using now?
Where is this "cPanel" thingee?
Posted by: ace @ at May 11, 2004 06:50 AM
4
Your CPanel thingy is at http://ace.mu.nu:2082
And your mail server will be just ace.mu.nu, not mail.ace.mu.nu (The latter will actually work at the moment, because everything munu is on the same server, but might not work in the future.)
When you upload something using the MT upload thingy, it will land in your archives directory by default, or you can select the base directory or a subdirectory.
In the default case, it will then be http://ace.mu.nu/archives/image.jpg - or you can just refer to it as /archives/image.jpg if you like.

MuNuby Help - Blank Blog?
You've been really busy at work and your kids are sick and your dog needs to go to the vet and you just don;t have any time to post this week. All of a sudden, your blog is blank. The only thing on it is your banner and your links.
"Madfish," you ask, "how to prevent a blank blog?"
Good question. First you go over and read the instructions over at the
MT Users Manual.
Then, you scratch your head and wonder what you just read. To make it easier for you to understand, here is some code.
